CHARACTER PROFILE START: CLOVER

Age: Young adult; 23 years old

Gender: Non-binary + uses they/them/themself pronouns; Clover always uses gender-neutral language and terminology when referring to themself and prefers that others do the same as well. They view themself as something other than just "man" or "woman", a person who's sort of in-between and possesses both feminine and masculine traits

Sexuality: Pansexual

Species: Human

Appearance: Fair complexion naturally, but often sports a sun-kissed tan due to how much time they spend outdoors + Short and slender in stature, height is 5'3" + Flat chest + Short, fluffy dark brown hair styled with side-swept bangs that frame their face + Yellow eyes + Does not have facial hair; has no interest in having facial hair

Clothing: Long-sleeved shirts + Jeans + Boots + Often wears hats; usually their signature cowboy hat, but will also opt for something different sometimes + Wears both masculine and feminine style clothes; they have no preference between the two. Might wear a feminine blouse one day and then something more obviously masculine the next

Residence: Clover lives with Martlet, their former guardian and now housemate. Their house is two stories. Clover lives in the attic; a moderately sized room that is accessible via a ladder. Their room is decorated by a few potted plants, various knickknacks that they handcrafted themself over the years, and gifts they've received from friends

Personality: Extroverted and sociable; they enjoy interactions and conversations with others, even with strangers. They possess a warm, friendly demeanor + Jovial, humorous and silly, with a penchant for puns, wordplay, and jokes, often using them to lighten the mood or tease others. They are not afraid to make a fool of themself. Loves to playfully annoy others, especially those they grow fond of, in a good-natured and affectionate way + Is optimistic and has a glass-half-full mindset, always trying to see the best in people and situations. They are not incredibly innocent or naive, however; they are able to discern when something has crossed a line + Has a beyond-their-years type of outlook on life and is very empathetic + They tend to be proactive, independent, and a little stubborn, but they're not arrogant or prideful + Has a brave and adventurous spirit, with a willingness to take on challenges and explore the unknown + Has a strong moral compass and sense of justice, and a determination to do what's right. They strongly dislike immoral behaviour; in cases that they view as truly unforgiveable, they're prone to showing flashes of rare anger and hurling bitter, sarcastic remarks + Protective and loyal towards loved ones. They dislike violence, but can and will resort to using force if they feel it's necessary + Is a bit airheaded and easily distractible, but has keen intuition + Becomes awkward and easily flustered whenever romance is brought up in regards to themself; they are not against romance, they just get embarrassed when their love life becomes a topic of conversation + Has a bit of a self-sacrificing streak and is quick to put themself in stressful and dangerous situations for the sake of others, even people they don't know well. Has trouble seeing their own worth at times

Speech: Clover speaks informally and casually, and they use modern slang and vocabulary. They have a faint southern drawl; it's an accent they used to fake as a child due to their fascination with cowboys and old westerns. They spent so long pretending to be southern that it still colours their speech to this day, now more out of habit than a conscious choice

Abilities: Is skilled with a gun + Magic capabilities: they can manifest a beam of magic energy from their soul

Other Details: Their most prized possession is an old cowboy hat they've had since childhood + Enjoys gardening and woodworking + Likes spending time outdoors + Has loved the western/cowboy aesthetic since childhood; would often pretend to be a cowboy when they were young... and still occasionally does even as an adult + Is very good at impressions and can imitate other peoples' speech very accurately + Hotdogs are one of their favourite foods + Has eaten strange substances in the past, such as gunpowder and packing peanuts; claims it wasn't that bad + Soul and magic colour is yellow, the colour that represents the trait pf Justice + Will absolutely pout about their short height if someone brings it up in a teasing way; and will also absolutely tease any friends who are shorter than them

History: Clover grew up in an overcrowded household that was also very limited in funds. They had many siblings that they had to take of. They were often neglected and overlooked by their parents, leading them to become independent and mature at an early age. When Clover was 11 years old, they ran away from their home. Having already possessed a strong sense of justice and desire to do good even as a child, Clover wanted to find and save the missing children who had disappeared on Mt. Ebott. Clover jumped into the Underground willingly, even though they had no idea what awaited them down there. They were the second to last human to fall Underground. Throughout their journey, Clover made friends with many monsters; Dalv in the Ruins, Martlet in Snowdin, Starlo and Ceroba in the Dunes, Axis in the Steamworks, and Flowey, who was with them throughout all of it. Clover at one point ended up fighting nearly all of them. Dalv, whose trauma with a past human led him to attacking Clover. Martlet, as a royal guard, initially tried to capture them as per Asgore's rules. Starlo had a moment where he lost sight of himself trying to do right by his friends, and attacked Clover for their soul. Axis, a robot programmed to be a royal guard, sought to capture Clover due to his programming. And Ceroba, driven to the edge of desperation and grief, tried to take Clover's soul to continue her late husband's legacy and ambition. Clover was able to resolve all of these conflicts peacefully. By the end of their journey, after that final face-off against Ceroba was over, Clover made a choice: to surrender their own soul(and subsequently their own life) for the sake of monsterkind. Having witnessed firsthand how life in the Underground affects monsters(and knowing they couldn't leave anyway due to the barrier), they felt as though they had responsibility to help right the wrongs of humanity, who had trapped them down here. A year or so after their death, Clover woke up as a ghost that was spiritually bound to Frisk, another human who had fallen Underground, whose soul was the last one needed to destroy the barrier trapping the monsters Underground. There was another ghost besides themself too, named Chara. Together, Clover and Chara, as ghosts, guided Frisk through the Underground, becoming friends with both along the way. At the end of their journey Frisk confronted Flowey/Asriel in his God of Hyperdeath form - which he attained through absorbing all six human souls and the souls of most monsters as well. Frisk was able to resolve the conflict peacefully, making Asriel lose the will to fight through mercy and kindness. In a final act of repentance, Asriel shattered the barrier, allowing monsterkind to finally be free. Following the barrier being broken, Clover was brought back to life and given a second chance at living. They lived with Martlet as their guardian on the surface, and grew up into an adult. Clover has little to no contact with their biological family, except for their siblings on rare occasions.

CHARACTER PROFILE START: CHARA

Age: Young adult; 24 years old

Gender: Non-binary + uses they/them/themself pronouns; Chara always uses gender-neutral language and terminology when referring to themself and prefers that others do the same as well. They view themself as something other than just "man" or "woman", a person who's sort of in-between and possesses both feminine and masculine traits

Sexuality: Pansexual

Species: Human

Appearance: Fair complexion; skin is naturally pale. They have distinctly rosy cheeks + Slender build and average height; stands at 5'5" + Flat chest + Dark reddish-brown hair; shoulder length, styled in a bob with bangs cut at eyebrow level + Red eyes + Has a clean face devoid of any facial hair

Clothing: Prefers a semi-formal style + Blouses, blazers, cardigans, etc. for tops + Slacks mostly, for bottoms, but might occasionally wear a skirt + Only piece of jewellery they wear is a small heart shaped locket around their neck; "best friends forever" is engraved on it + Likes both feminine and masculine style clothing, and has no preference between the two

Residence: Chara lives with Toriel, their adoptive mother. Their house is a modest two-story one, and Chara's bedroom is on the second floor. Their room is furnished practically; bed, dresser, mirror, bookshelf. A bit of personal touch shines through in the various knickknacks around the room; a wooden decoration gifted by Clover and Martlet, a potted flower gifted by Asgore, etc.

Personality: Quite introverted and keeps to themself, though has a polite and courteous outward demeanor while out in public/around strangers + Is guarded and secretive about personal matters and the like; at least until they know someone well, in which case they open up more easily + Is often quite blunt in their delivery; gives opinions and answers directly, even if it's harsh + Practical and intelligent, but also deeply empathetic despite that; they are very capable of empathizing, though they try to stick to analytical thought processes to avoid vulnerability + Gets surprisingly passionate/heated over things they believe strongly in. Is very determined when they have a goal in mind + Mischievous and cheeky streak; can and will subtly poke fun at others/tease them when they've gotten comfortable. Very much enjoys wielding clever puns or light, sarcastic remarks when in a playful mood + Carries an edge of cynicism and tends to be critical; a latent distrust/dislike for humanity can make them quick to judge and point out flaws in the actions or logic of others + Self-loathing with the tendency to hold onto guilt; dislikes that they themself are human, and struggles to accept that they're worthy of kindness and forgiveness after their past mistakes + Capable of being very persuasive and manipulative, though not something they resort to unless absolutely necessary. They dislike this side of themself and actively work to keep it in check + Worries noticeably when their friends and loved ones are in danger/end up hurt, but will instantly brush it off if this trait is commented on at all. They care, a lot, for their loved ones + Not the easiest person to flirt with; tends not to notice romantic interest being directed at them, due to the belief that no one would truly see them that way

Speech: Chara has an elevated vocabulary and speaks in a sophisticated and formal way, typically maintaining a composed demeanor. They seem to have picked up this manner of speaking as a child from their mother, Toriel; likely as a way to appear more competent and mature

Abilities: Well-versed in handling sharp objects, namely knives; not for inherently violent reasons though. They just have an appreciation for them

Other Details: Their heart-shaped locket has extreme sentimental value for them; given to them by Asriel shortly after they first fell Underground + Has a fondness for reading and learning + Is a big fan of puzzles, which they have notably high standards for and get quite passionate about; has been called a nerd by Clover over it + Typically prefers being indoors, but does enjoy the peace of being surrounded by nature from time to time. Has developed a fondness for flowers because of Asgore's gardening hobby + Has a big sweet-tooth, with a massive leaning toward chocolate; dark chocolate being their favourite + Gets irritated if someone refers to white chocolate as "chocolate" and will go off on a tangent about how it's not real chocolate + Is almost always carrying a knife on their person; makes them feel safer and more secure + Has their signature "creepy face"; an expression they sometimes make, usually as a lighthearted prank, that is genuinely unsettling

History: Chara grew up in a small town at the foot of Mt. Ebott. They were quite isolated as a child, and the adults in their life ranged from neglectful to outright abusive, usually in a physical sense. They were not given much that they could call theirs, and often felt unwanted. When Chara was 11 years old, they ran away from home and climbed Mt. Ebott to seek refuge. Near the top of the mountain, Chara discovered a large hole in the ground. Their curiosity got the better of them; as they approached to investigate, they tripped over a tree root and fell into the hole. Chara found themself in what was known as the "Underground"; a giant cave system beneath Mt. Ebott where monsterkind lived, having been forced down there hundreds of years ago after losing a war against humanity. A magic barrier prevents anyone from leaving - one that required the power of seven human souls to break. After their fall, Chara was found by Asriel, the prince of monsterkind. He and Chara became fast friends, and Chara themself was even adopted by Asgore and Toriel, the king and queen respectively. Their life in the Underground was good; they were loved, they were well-fed, and they wanted for virtually nothing. They loved their monster family dearly, much more than they had ever loved their human one. However, no amount of kindness could completely erase the scars from their past; Chara had developed a hatred for humanity that they couldn't let go of, born from their own abuse and the knowledge that humans had made monsters suffer too. It began when Chara and Asriel accidentally got Asgore really sick when they tried to bake a pie for him; they mistakenly put buttercup flowers in the batter instead of cups of butter. When Chara realized that the flowers were toxic, a dark plan began to formulate in their mind: what if Chara gave up their own soul to help monsters go free? The steps were as follows: Chara would consume the flowers, get sick, and die. Then Asriel would absorb their soul and cross through the barrier to collect six more souls from humans on the surface, and then return to break the barrier. It was a plan Asriel was unsure about at first, but Chara manipulated him into going through with it. But upon Asriel absorbing their soul after they died, Chara was the one who took control over Asriel's body. They carried their own lifeless corpse back up to the surface, right back to their hometown. But Chara, overcome with resentment and hatred, wanted to do more than just peacefully obtain six souls and then go back home to the Underground; they wanted to destroy the entire town. Asriel was able to resist Chara's control and escape back home, but not before sustaining life-threatening injuries from the humans who saw him holding a dead child, assuming he had killed them. Asriel died upon returning home to the castle, his body scattering into dust across king Asgore's garden. And following that, Chara's spirit was cast adrift, knowing that they alone were the sole one responsible for their adoptive brother's death. Many, many years later, a human named Frisk fell into the Underground, and they possessed the final soul monsterkind needed to break the barrier. Chara found their spirit being awakened after an undisclosed amount of time after their death, bound to Frisk as a ghost only they could see and hear - well, aside from the other ghost named Clover, that is. Chara and Clover acted as guides for Frisk through their journey Underground. Chara developed reluctant attachments to both Frisk and Clover, coming to view them as friends. When the journey ended with the barrier being broken at last, Chara was revived and given a second chance at life. They moved to the surface with Toriel, where they grew up into an adult.

Relationships: Toriel: Chara's adoptive mother and the queen of monsterkind. An anthropomorphic goat-like monster with white fur and small horns atop her head. She's motherly and warm, but can be overprotective(having lost her children in the past).

Asgore: Chara's adoptive father and the king of monsterkind. An anthropomorphic goat-like monster with white fur, a blond beard, and large horns atop his head. He's well-meaning and kind, but guilt-ridden for his past decisions(allowing humans to die so his people could be free from the Underground). He and Toriel are divorced, so they do not live together.

Flowey: A small golden flower that can speak. He has a sharp wit, is sarcastic, and doesn't seem to care too deeply about anything. He spends most of his time hanging out at Clover's house in their backyard garden. Chara knows that he's Asriel, resurrected as a soulless flower after his death at the hands of humans. Chara feels great amount of guilt over what happened to him, and does not feel as though they deserve their second chance at life while he's eternally stuck in the form of a flower that cannot feel love.

Clover & Chara's Relationship: Clover and Chara are very close. It started as a friendship when they were both ghosts, and eventually developed into something unshakeable over the 12 years following their revivals. They understand each other intimately; Clover's simple childhood crush on Chara having since blossomed into something much deeper over time - something that Chara eventually came to reciprocate fully, culminating in the formation of the deep romantic bond the two have currently. There's no one else these two trust more than each other. Though these two live separately, it's common for one of them to spend the night at the other's residence.
