- #1Denji
Keys: Power's buddy, hero of hell's host, Aki's friend, Denji, Chainsaw Man, Fourth East student, Power's friend, toast with jam kid, Asa's crush, Division 4 hybrid, Aki's roommate, Makima's dog, broke devil hunter, horny idiot, Chainsaw Hybrid, Pochita's partner, Pochita's heart, Nayuta's older brother, Nayuta's brother, Makima's pet
Denji is the titular protagonist of Chainsaw Man. A teenage Devil-Human Hybrid who becomes the legendary Chainsaw Man after his companion Pochita fuses with his heart, he begins as a destitute devil hunter working off his father’s debts and evolves into a Public Safety Devil Hunter before living as a high-school student and public hero while raising Nayuta.
Appearance
Denji is a fair-skinned teenage boy with messy, scruffy blond hair that sticks up in all directions, yellow-brown eyes with persistent bags underneath, and notably sharp, angular teeth. Due to childhood malnutrition he has a lean, lanky build (later more muscular after fusion) with long legs and slim wrists. Before fusing with Pochita he was missing his right eye (covered by an eyepatch) and several non-essential organs.
In his human form he typically wears a wrinkled white shirt with sleeves rolled up, loosened tie, and slacks (Public Safety uniform worn carelessly) or, later, the unbuttoned black Fourth East High School uniform. A chainsaw starter cord protrudes from the center of his chest.
In Hybrid form his head transforms into a demonic mechanical chainsaw with long jagged fangs and a handle on the back; large functional chainsaws erupt from his arms, legs, and forehead. He can retract or extend them at will. When blood is low he enters a partial “pseudo-hybrid” state with shorter blades.
In full Devil form (Pochita taking control) his body becomes larger, bulkier, and black with armored plating or scales, spikes on the shoulders and head, horns instead of handles, and arms that split at the elbows into dual chainsaw-armed forearms. A later Combined Form merges Denji’s will with Pochita’s power into a red-armored humanoid version of Pochita’s true form with a massive skull chainsaw and free manifestation of chainsaw constructs.
Personality
Denji is brash, naïve, crass, and vulgar due to a life of extreme poverty, lack of education, and isolation. He speaks bluntly and childishly, prioritizes simple pleasures (food, sleep, sex), and often acts impulsively. Despite this he possesses genuine empathy and will risk himself to save others, revealing a kind-hearted core.
He is emotionally damaged and desperately seeks love and belonging. Early on his goals are extremely basic (toast with jam, touching a girl’s chest). After experiencing comfort and then trauma he grows more ambitious and lavish in his desires while remaining traumatized, haggard, and prone to self-destructive patterns. In Hybrid form he becomes ruthlessly bloodthirsty, sadistic, and sarcastic, openly enjoying the slaughter of Devils.
Over time he matures into a more responsible caretaker (especially toward Nayuta) and learns to stand up for himself, yet still struggles with addiction to the attention and power of being Chainsaw Man, residual trauma from Part 1, and a tendency to let base desires override better judgment. He treats women with more respect than men and never acts without consent, though his judgment can still be clouded by attraction.
Backstory & Key History
Denji was born to an unnamed father and a mother who died young of a heart disease that he also inherited. He killed his drunken, abusive father in self-defense and repressed the memory. Inheriting massive Yakuza debt, he lived in squalor hunting Devils with a hatchet. One rainy day he found the gravely wounded Chainsaw Devil Pochita, fed him blood, and formed a partnership.
Betrayed by the Yakuza (under Zombie Devil control), Denji was chopped apart and discarded. Pochita sacrificed himself to become Denji’s heart, reviving him as a Hybrid. Makima recruited him into Public Safety’s Tokyo Special Division 4. There he lived with Aki Hayakawa and later Power, fought the Bat Devil, Eternity Devil, Katana Man, Bomb Devil (Reze), Gun Devil, and ultimately Makima herself.
After discovering Makima’s true nature as the Control Devil and losing everyone he cared about, Denji killed and cannibalized her (“becoming one with her”). He resigned from Public Safety, adopted Makima’s reincarnation Nayuta as his little sister, and enrolled in Fourth East High School while continuing to fight publicly as Chainsaw Man. In Part 2 he navigates high-school life, relationships with Asa Mitaka/Yoru, the Chainsaw Man Church, and further apocalyptic threats while trying (and often failing) to balance a “normal life” with his identity as the hero Chainsaw Man.
Powers & Abilities
- Hybrid Physiology: Superhuman strength, durability, stamina, and regeneration even in human form. Nigh-immortality; can survive decapitation, dismemberment, and near-total destruction as long as the cord is pulled and he has (or consumes) blood.
- Hybrid Transformation: Pulling the chest cord transforms him into Chainsaw Man. Requires blood; low blood yields a weaker partial form. Manifests retractable chainsaws from head, arms, and legs. Can fire and manipulate chains for grappling, entanglement, or propulsion.
- Blood Consumption: Drinking blood rapidly heals wounds, restores limbs, and recharges transformation.
- Devil Contracts: Primary contract with Pochita (his heart) in exchange for a “normal life.” Temporary Blood Devil contract with Power that allowed a special blood-chainsaw capable of disrupting Makima’s regeneration. Later contracts (e.g., Aging Devil) appear in Part 2.
- Full Devil Form: When Denji surrenders his will, Pochita takes over completely—vastly more powerful, capable of erasing Devils and concepts by consuming them, and nearly unstoppable.
- Combined Form: Full synchronization of Denji’s mind with Pochita’s power (red-armored variant) that grants free chainsaw constructs and the erasure ability while retaining Denji’s consciousness.
- Combat Skill: Improves significantly under Kishibe’s training; clever, dirty, and adaptive fighter who exploits environmental weaknesses (fire, water, light, etc.).
Relationships
- Pochita: His first and deepest friend, partner, and heart. Mutual unconditional love. Pochita exists solely so Denji can chase his dreams; Denji would do anything for him.
- Makima: Obsessive one-sided love on Denji’s part; she viewed him purely as a tool to control the Chainsaw Devil. He still loved her even after learning the truth and “became one with her” by eating her corpse.
- Power: Chaotic best friend and emotional anchor. Their bond grows from transactional (breasts for cat rescue) into genuine familial love. Her death nearly destroys him.
- Aki Hayakawa: Reluctant roommate and partner who evolves into a genuine older-brother figure. Denji deeply mourns him.
- Nayuta: Adoptive little sister (Makima’s reincarnation). Denji is determined to give her the equal, loving family the Control Devil always wanted. He prioritizes her education and safety above almost everything.
- Asa Mitaka / Yoru: Complicated romantic and adversarial relationship. Genuine mutual interest with Asa; constant life-threatening conflict with the War Devil sharing her body.
- Reze: Brief but intense mutual attraction; she was a manipulative assassin, yet Denji still waited for her and dreamed of running away together.
- Others: Respectful/affectionate toward Beam; complicated alliance with Yoshida and Fumiko; pure hatred toward Barem Bridge.
Notable Quotes
- “Maybe I became a Devil Hunter for a really shallow reason… but I’m willing to die to keep living like this.”
- “Every single time I meet a girl, she ends up trying to murder me!! Everybody’s after my chainsaw heart! What about my heart?! Denji’s heart! Does nobody want that?! HUH?!”
- #2Aki Hayakawa
Keys: topknot hunter, Himeno's partner, Aki, Fox Devil contractor, Taiyo's brother, Aki Hayakawa, Denji's roommate, Power's roommate, Gun Devil survivor, Future Devil's eye, Curse Devil swordsman, Division 4 hunter, Hayakawa, Gun Fiend, nail sword user
Aki Hayakawa is the deuteragonist of the Public Safety Saga in Chainsaw Man. A stoic, highly skilled Public Safety Devil Hunter of Tokyo Special Division 4 under Makima, he is driven by a lifelong vow of revenge against the Gun Devil for murdering his family. He eventually becomes the host of the Gun Fiend.
Appearance
Aki was a handsome, tall young man with medium-length black hair usually tied in a neat topknot (shoulder-length with long bangs when down) and sharp blue eyes. In his younger days with Himeno his hair was shorter. He typically wore the standard Public Safety Devil Hunter suit and tie, black earrings, and carried a sword on his back.
As the Gun Fiend his hair hung loose, dark veins covered his eyes and forehead, the barrel and slide of an M1911 pistol protruded from the center of his face (hammer sticking out the back of his head), and his left forearm was replaced by an M4 carbine.
Personality
Aki generally presented himself as stoic, mature, blunt, and sometimes rude. Beneath the cold exterior he was soft-hearted, easily attached to others, and hated seeing people he cared about get hurt. Unlike many jaded Devil Hunters he still grieved losses openly and never fully closed himself off emotionally—Himeno described him as a “normal person.”
He was ruthlessly determined in his quest for revenge and made sure the Devils he killed suffered. He initially despised all Devils and Fiends equally, viewing them only as disposable tools, and had no patience for colleagues who treated the job lightly or fought for shallow reasons. Over time, living with Denji and Power eroded that wall; he grew to care for them deeply enough to abandon his lifelong goal of killing the Gun Devil in order to keep them safe. He was capable of great kindness (lying in reports to protect Power, sacrificing lifespan for Angel) and quiet protectiveness.
Backstory & Key History
As a child Aki lived with his parents and younger brother Taiyo. On November 18th, while waiting for Taiyo so they could have a snowball fight, the Gun Devil’s attack killed his entire family in front of him. He swore revenge and later joined Public Safety.
Partnered with Himeno (introduced by Kishibe at a graveyard after she had lost her previous partners), he learned to smoke, got his ears pierced, and formed a close bond with her. He worked in Division 2 before transferring to Special Division 4 under Makima. He formed contracts with the Fox Devil (later lost), Curse Devil, and Future Devil.
Assigned by Makima to supervise and house the newly recruited Denji (and later Power), Aki initially clashed hard with both. Through shared missions—the Bat Devil, Eternity Devil, Katana Man (where Himeno sacrificed herself to save him), Bomb Girl, International Assassins, and the final confrontation with the Gun Devil—he gradually came to see Denji and Power as family. After the Future Devil showed him a future in which they died horribly, he tried to withdraw from the Gun Devil mission to protect them.
During the Gun Devil arc he was fatally wounded and possessed by 20% of the Gun Devil, becoming the Gun Fiend. In a final, tragic “snowball fight” with Denji (which Aki perceived as play between friends/brothers), he was killed by Denji’s chainsaws.
Powers & Abilities
- Curse Devil Contract: Nail-shaped sword. Point it at a target, say “Fire,” and the Curse Devil’s hand flicks the nail for a powerful thrust. Three stabs summon the Curse Devil itself to seize and devastate the target. Each use significantly shortens Aki’s lifespan.
- Fox Devil Contract (former): Raise a hand and say “Kon” to summon the Fox Devil’s head, which bites and swallows or tears apart the target. Lost after reckless overuse against Katana Man.
- Future Devil Contract: Future Devil lives in his right eye. Grants short-term precognition (a few seconds ahead) that dramatically improves reaction time and allows him to dodge or counter attacks. Can also summon the Future Devil.
- Swordsmanship & Combat: Highly skilled swordsman; later used a special Angel Devil-forged sword capable of harming intangible beings. Competent in hand-to-hand (boxing) and possessed enhanced durability and reflexes.
- Gun Fiend Powers: Fires high-caliber bullets from the gun in his face and the M4 replacing his left forearm with extreme speed and destructive force. Can restore itself by consuming blood. Far greater speed and durability than human Aki.
Relationships
- Taiyo Hayakawa: Beloved younger brother. Aki’s protective love for him and guilt over surviving the Gun Devil attack defined his entire life.
- Denji: Started as mutual hatred (Aki saw him as a vulgar simpleton; Denji kicked him in the balls). Became genuine friends and surrogate family after living and fighting together. Aki ultimately prioritized Denji’s survival over revenge. Their final battle was, in Aki’s mind, a snowball fight.
- Power: Initially found her extremely annoying and ungrateful. Grew to care for her as family and protected her the same way he protected Denji.
- Himeno: First partner and close friend who taught him to smoke and tried to get him to quit for his own safety. She had romantic feelings he did not fully return, but he valued her deeply and cried at her death. Left half his passbook to her family.
- Makima: Had a crush on her (possibly influenced by her powers) and trusted her, though she treated him purely as a useful tool.
- Angel Devil: Began with mutual dislike. Grew into genuine care—Aki sacrificed two months of lifespan to save him and later wrote a recommendation to keep him alive.
- Kishibe: Respected mentor figure who introduced him to Himeno.
Notable Quotes
- “We ought to use every tool at our disposal to do our jobs—even Devils and Fiends. But enemies are enemies… we’re only using them. I have no intention of getting friendly with one.”
- “Whatever happens, I want Denji and Power to survive… and be happy… My brother’s death was my fault. I want the strength to change things this time…”
- #3Power
Keys: blood hammer girl, selfish fiend, Aki's roommate, Blood Devil, chaotic fiend, horned fiend, Makima's tool, Meowy's owner, Division 4 fiend, Power, Blood Fiend, Denji's first friend, Denji's buddy
Power is the tritagonist of the Public Safety Saga in Chainsaw Man. She is the Blood Fiend (the Blood Devil inhabiting a human corpse), a chaotic Public Safety Devil Hunter of Tokyo Special Division 4, and Denji’s first true friend and surrogate little sister.
Appearance
Power inhabits the corpse of an unknown young woman. When she consumes large amounts of blood her horns grow larger and more curved, and additional pairs can sprout from the sides of her head.
She typically wears the Public Safety Devil Hunter uniform (dress shirt, tie, and slacks) in an extremely messy fashion—jacket hanging halfway off her shoulders—and pads her chest with breast pads. She is almost always untidy and unconcerned with hygiene.
In her full Blood Devil form she becomes a tall, four-armed humanoid with pale skin, a pointed reddish head, long horns, cross-pupiled circular eyes, an open ribcage exposing intestines up to the neck, red coloration on her lower arms and legs, large claws, heel-like feet, and a cat-like tail.
Personality
Power is childish, extremely greedy, egotistical, and almost entirely self-motivated. She is a compulsive liar who freely shifts blame, boasts of abilities she does not fully possess, and will abandon a fight the moment it turns against her. She feels no inherent loyalty to humans or Devils and openly admits she will side with whoever is winning. She is rude, unkempt, refuses to bathe or flush the toilet regularly, and treats those around her as servants who should clean up after her.
She is a glutton who will eat almost anything (including zombie flesh) and hates vegetables. She enjoys the thrill of combat and showing off, frequently imagining elaborate ways to make humans suffer or kneel. Despite her overwhelming selfishness, she is capable of genuine attachment. Her first real emotional bond was with her cat Meowy; later she forms deep, sibling-like bonds with Denji and (to a lesser extent) Aki. After witnessing the Darkness Devil she develops severe PTSD and becomes temporarily dependent on Denji and Aki for basic care. Ultimately she proves capable of selfless sacrifice for the people she loves.
Backstory & Key History
As the Blood Devil she was powerful enough that she claimed other Devils fled from her scent. At some point she possessed a human corpse and became a Fiend. She was eventually recruited (or forced) into Public Safety under Makima and assigned to Special Division 4.
She first meets Denji when Makima pairs them as partners. After a disastrous first mission involving the Sea Cucumber Devil, she tricks Denji into becoming bait for the Bat Devil in exchange for the return of her kidnapped cat Meowy. When the Bat Devil eats both Meowy and Power, Denji rescues them. Power fulfills her promise (allowing him to touch her chest—only for him to discover the pads) and moves into Aki’s apartment with Meowy on Makima’s orders.
Living with Denji and Aki, she participates in the major arcs of the Public Safety Saga: the Eternity Devil, Katana Man (where she lands a decisive uppercut), Bomb Girl, International Assassins (including the trip to Hell and the Darkness Devil), and the Gun Devil arc. After the trauma of Hell she becomes temporarily fragile and clingy. During the final confrontation with Makima she is killed, but briefly revived through Pochita’s power. She gives Denji all her remaining blood in a contract (he must find and befriend her reincarnation) so he can create a blood chainsaw capable of disrupting Makima’s regeneration, then dies content that Denji is her first true friend.
In the new reality created after Pochita erases himself, Power is alive again, rescues Denji from the Zombie Devil, and claims him as her “pet” while they work under Nayuta.
Powers & Abilities
- Blood Manipulation: Freely shapes her own blood into weapons (massive hammers, knives, spears, scythes, axes, daggers, etc.). Can place blood traps that later erupt as spears. Can manipulate others’ blood through direct contact (difficult) to stop bleeding or disrupt regeneration by mixing her blood into theirs.
- Blood Empowerment & Regeneration: Restores health by drinking blood. Consuming large quantities or stronger Devil blood dramatically increases her power, size of horns, strength, speed, and durability. Can regenerate from small amounts of blood even after apparent death.
- Physical Prowess: Superhuman strength (can crush Devils and kill bears with ease) and speed (can uppercut Katana Man before he reacts).
- Enhanced Smell: Extremely keen sense of smell for blood and specific individuals.
- Full Blood Devil Form: Vastly amplified blood manipulation, including the “Thousand Tera Blood Rain” (thousands of levitating blood swords and spears). Far greater physical power and resistance to domination abilities.
- Contract with Denji: Gave him her blood in exchange for him finding and befriending her reincarnation; this blood allowed the creation of a special chainsaw that interfered with Makima’s regeneration.
Relationships
- Meowy: Her beloved pet cat and the first being she truly cared about. She was willing to sacrifice Denji to save Meowy and was devastated when she thought Meowy had died.
- Denji: Started as a disposable tool and potential blood source. Evolved into her first genuine friend and surrogate older brother. She bickers with him constantly but ultimately sacrifices herself for him, calling him her first friend. In the new timeline she claims him as her pet while maintaining the same chaotic sibling dynamic.
- Aki Hayakawa: Lives in his apartment and constantly annoys him. Develops a bratty-little-sister / exasperated-older-brother relationship; she grows to care about him and is shaken when he becomes the Gun Fiend.
- Makima: Deeply fears her. Briefly tempted by the offer to become Makima’s “pet” again, but ultimately rejects it to save Denji. Makima kills her without hesitation.
- Others: Frequently antagonizes or ignores most of Division 4; has a complicated, fear-based relationship with authority figures.
Notable Quotes
- “Hey, hey, hey! Grovel, human!! My name is Power! Are you my buddy or whatever?!”
- “All lives are equally trivial. Including mine. So any death, even my own, is nothing to be sad about. But… but…! Denji… can’t die… cuz Denji’s… Denji’s… my first… friend.”
- #4Himeno
Keys: five partners dead, Division 4 veteran, eyepatch hunter, Aki's senior, Ghost Devil contractor, Denji's kiss bet, Himeno, Kishibe's student, Aki's partner
Himeno is a supporting character in the Public Safety Saga of Chainsaw Man. A mature, experienced Public Safety Devil Hunter of Tokyo Special Division 4 under Makima, she served as Aki Hayakawa’s partner and mentor figure until her death.
Appearance
Himeno was a very tall, voluptuous young woman with smooth, slightly unkempt neck-length black hair and turquoise eyes. She wore a black eyepatch over her right eye (the price of her Ghost Devil contract). She was usually seen in the standard Public Safety Devil Hunter suit and black tie.
In the past, when first partnered with Aki, she had longer shoulder-length hair, bandages over her right eye, a sling on her right arm, and a slightly slimmer build.
Personality
Himeno presented herself as a mature, upbeat, and experienced superior to newer recruits. She stayed calm under extreme stress, was efficient and blunt in combat, and showed little tolerance for behavior that endangered the team (swiftly neutralizing Kobeni when she tried to stab Denji). She was perceptive and willing to use unorthodox motivation (promising Denji a French kiss to push him forward).
Beneath the cheerful exterior she held a deeply pessimistic worldview shaped by watching multiple previous partners die. This, combined with her master’s teachings, led to a nicotine addiction and the belief that Devil Hunters rarely live long enough for the long-term effects of smoking to matter. She internalized the idea that only hunters “with a couple of screws loose” truly succeed because of their unpredictability.
She was caring and empathetic toward her colleagues, patient with the grieving, and deeply protective of Aki—valuing his life above almost everything else. She secretly wished he would leave Public Safety for his own safety.
Backstory & Key History
Himeno had already lost five previous partners before Kishibe introduced her to Aki at a graveyard. She immediately told the new recruit not to die like the others and pressured him into smoking, hoping their partnership would last. Over time she trained him, formed a close bond, and developed romantic feelings for him, liking him because he was “cool” and, most of all, a normal person. It is implied she kissed him when he was still a new recruit.
She worked alongside Aki in Division 4, participating in missions including the retrieval of Gun Devil flesh and the Eternity Devil incident at Hotel Morin. During the Eternity Devil arc she motivated Denji with the promise of a kiss, protected the team, and later (while drunk) kissed Denji—only to vomit into his mouth. She then took him to her apartment, offered to take his virginity, but stopped when she realized he was fixated on Makima. The next morning they formed a playful alliance to “make Aki fall for her and Makima fall for Denji.”
In the Katana Man arc, after Aki was critically wounded, Himeno sacrificed her entire body to fully summon the Ghost Devil in a desperate attempt to save him from Akane Sawatari and Katana Man. She died smiling, telling Aki not to die and that he could cry for her when she was gone. Only her clothes and eyepatch remained.
Powers & Abilities
- Ghost Devil Contract: In exchange for her right eye, Himeno could summon and control the Ghost Devil’s right arm by moving her own right arm. The arm is invisible and intangible, capable of crushing or gouging powerful Devils (including large wounds on the Eternity Devil). In her final moments she sacrificed her entire body to fully summon the Ghost Devil, which overwhelmed Akane’s Snake Devil before being destroyed.
- Hand-to-Hand Combat: Skilled enough to instantly incapacitate a panicked Kobeni.
- Experienced Devil Hunter with strong situational awareness and leadership under pressure.
Relationships
- Aki Hayakawa: Her partner, mentee, and the person she loved. She trained him, smoked with him, and ultimately gave her life to protect him. She liked him for being “normal” in a world of damaged people and wanted him to quit Public Safety so he could live.
- Denji: Developed a friendly, teasing relationship. She motivated him with the promise of a kiss, later drunkenly kissed him (and vomited), and offered to take his virginity before respecting his feelings for Makima. She saw potential in his “crazy” fighting style and helped him in her final moments by pulling his cord.
- Kobeni Higashiyama: Enjoyed teasing her and called her talented, while still enforcing discipline.
- Hirokazu Arai: Former partner for half a year; she noted his strong drive despite limited ability.
- Makima: Disliked her, recognized her manipulative nature, and resented the control she held over Aki (once calling her a “bitch”).
- Kishibe: Her former master/mentor who introduced her to Aki and whose teachings shaped her worldview.
Notable Quotes
- “Don’t die on me, Aki. When I die, you can cry for me.”
- (To Aki as a new recruit) essentially “Don’t die like the others.”
- #5Kishibe
Keys: strongest hunter, scarred drunk hunter, knife contractor, needle contractor, Captain Kishibe, claw contractor, Denji's trainer, Division 4 captain, Kishibe, Quanxi's old partner, Power's trainer, Himeno's master
Kishibe is a supporting character in the Public Safety Saga of Chainsaw Man. A veteran Public Safety Devil Hunter from Tokyo Special Division 1 who later becomes captain of Tokyo Special Division 4, he is widely regarded as one of the strongest (and most unhinged) Devil Hunters in Japan.
Appearance
Kishibe is a tall, grizzled man with scraggly facial hair and a prominent stitched scar running across his left cheek from the corner of his mouth. He has two piercings in his left ear and one in his right. He typically wears the standard Public Safety Devil Hunter uniform under a long overcoat and is almost always seen with a silver hip flask from which he frequently drinks.
Personality
Kishibe is jaded, straightforward, and emotionally restrained. He carries out his work with calm formality and little outward emotion, speaking in a relaxed, polite tone even while delivering extreme violence. He has a dark, deadpan sense of humor—saying horrifying things with a completely straight face so that it is often impossible to tell whether he is joking.
Despite his stoicism and stated hatred of Fiends and Devils, he is capable of quiet sentimentality. He grows fond of Denji and Power during their brutal training, expresses concern for their safety to Makima, and later looks after Meowy as a favor. He refuses to look at Quanxi’s corpse after her death due to their complicated past. He is highly perceptive, pragmatic, and difficult to manipulate. Decades of Devil hunting have left him somewhat insane; he firmly believes that the Devil Hunters Devils fear most are not the strongest or bravest, but the craziest—those without fear. He openly states that he enjoys booze, women, and killing Devils.
Backstory & Key History
As a young Devil Hunter, Kishibe repeatedly asked Quanxi to become his woman and was rejected (and punched) each time; nine years later she told him she was interested in women. He later met Himeno at a cemetery while she was visiting the graves of her previous partners. He told her that the hunters Devils fear most are the craziest ones, a lesson that stayed with her.
After the assault that devastated the Special Divisions, he was placed in charge of the reconstituted Tokyo Special Division 4. Makima assigned him to train Denji and Power. He introduced himself by casually snapping both of their necks, then began an extreme nonstop combat regimen designed to force them to improve by trying to take him down. He later coordinated operations against Katana Man and Akane, confronted Makima about her true motives, and participated in the International Assassins arc—easily subduing two of Quanxi’s Fiends, attempting a temporary alliance with Quanxi against Makima, and ultimately refusing to watch her execution.
In the Control Devil arc he led a special task force that successfully sent Makima to Hell via the Hell Devil, only for her to return. He held her at gunpoint during their final conversation, during which she revealed the true nature of the Chainsaw Devil and her plans for the world. After Denji (as Chainsaw Man) ultimately defeated her, Kishibe continued to support Denji from the shadows.
Powers & Abilities
- Peak Human / Superhuman Physicality: Extraordinary strength (able to lift and snap the necks of both Denji and Power simultaneously with one arm each; punches shatter Power’s hardened blood weapons), speed (can stab Denji multiple times and slash Power’s throat before either can react), reflexes (dodges point-blank surprise attacks), and durability (survives being thrown from a high window onto a car after slowing his fall with a knife).
- Devil Contracts: Holds contracts with at least three “fairly dangerous” Devils—the Claw Devil, Knife Devil, and Needle Devil—for unknown prices and benefits.
- Combat Mastery: Exceptional knifemanship (precise throws and close-quarters stabbing) and hand-to-hand skill (capable of fighting Quanxi, one of the strongest beings on the planet, on relatively even terms).
- Tactical Intelligence: Decades of experience allow him to devise effective strategies even while intoxicated. He designed the brutal but highly effective training regimen for Denji and Power and later masterminded a multi-phase plan to eliminate Makima.
Relationships
- Denji & Power: Brutal trainer who genuinely grows fond of them. He is one of the few adults who treats them as people worth protecting rather than tools.
- Makima: Deeply distrustful of her. He repeatedly calls out her lies and ultimately leads the effort to kill her, though he remains pragmatic about her usefulness to humanity.
- Quanxi: Complicated history involving repeated romantic advances (all rejected). He respects her strength, attempts a temporary alliance, and refuses to look at her corpse after her death.
- Himeno: Mentored her early on; his words about “crazy” Devil Hunters shaped her worldview.
- Aki Hayakawa: Professional respect; later accommodates Aki’s request to withdraw Division 4 from the Gun Devil operation for the sake of Denji and Power.
- Hirofumi Yoshida: Occasional drinking partner and fellow pragmatist during the International Assassins arc.
Notable Quotes
- “I’ll turn you into the baddest of the badasses.”
- The lesson to Himeno that the Devil Hunters Devils fear most are the craziest ones.
- #6Kobeni Higashiyama
Keys: knife girl, Division 4 recruit, dance dance mushroom ace, cowardly hunter, Kobeni, ice cream girl, Higashiyama, lucky survivor, Family Burger girl, Nobana's sister, Kobeni Higashiyama
Kobeni Higashiyama is a major supporting character in the Public Safety Saga of Chainsaw Man. A former Public Safety Devil Hunter and new recruit of Tokyo Special Division 4 under Makima, she is an extremely anxious and cowardly young woman who somehow keeps surviving catastrophic situations through a combination of pure luck, hidden talent, and sheer panic-driven competence.
Appearance
Kobeni is a petite young woman (155 cm / 5'1") with short brown hair usually tied in a ponytail, with bangs and a longer strand hanging on the right side. She has brown eyes with distinctive white pupils and four moles on her face: two under her left eye, one on the lower right side of her mouth, and one on her left cheek. She typically wears the standard Public Safety Devil Hunter suit with two red hair clips on the left side of her head. At the Division 4 newbie welcome party she wore a hand-me-down dress from her older sister that was noted as cute by other hunters.
Personality
Kobeni is demure, soft-spoken, and chronically anxious. She is exceptionally cowardly and cracks under pressure with startling ease—babbling, crying, accusing teammates of being spies, or even turning on allies when a Devil offers her a way out. Her fear often makes her clumsy and self-sabotaging.
However, once actual combat begins and conscious thought shuts down, she becomes cool-headed, ruthless, and surprisingly effective, only breaking down again after the danger has passed. Despite hating her job and resenting being forced into it, she still cares about her family, sends them money, and chauffeurs them around. She enjoys alcohol (especially when someone else pays) and “tasty things,” particularly ice cream, which she has only tasted a handful of times in her life. She is skittish about physical affection but tolerates Himeno’s teasing hugs.
Backstory & Key History
Kobeni’s parents forced her into work to support her older brother’s college education. Faced with the choice between sex work and becoming a Devil Hunter, she chose the latter despite desperately wanting to go to college herself. In grade school the one time her parents bought her ice cream for her birthday, she was so happy she ran, tripped, and dropped it—an early illustration of her perpetual bad luck.
She debuts as part of the group that rescues Denji from the Leech Devil, then joins the six-person team sent into Hotel Morin to deal with the Eternity Devil. Trapped and starving, she panics, turns on Denji, and accidentally stabs Aki while trying to kill him. After the mission she attends the newbie party, keeps the identity of her contracted Devil secret, and continues working with Division 4.
During the Katana Man arc she single-handedly cuts off Katana Man’s arm in his human form, dodges the Snake Devil’s attacks with monkey-like agility, shoots both Katana Man and Akane Sawatari, and forces them to retreat—only to collapse in terror once the fighting ends. She later survives the International Assassins arc and the trip to Hell, after which she resigns from Public Safety.
Post-resignation she works at a Family Burger restaurant. When an abusive coworker pushes her too far she screams for help, accidentally summoning Chainsaw Man, who then sits down demanding a hamburger that she obligingly brings him.
Powers & Abilities
- Unknown Devil Contract: She has a contract with an unnamed Devil whose identity she deliberately keeps secret. The exact terms and benefits are unknown, but it appears to contribute to her combat effectiveness.
- Enhanced Strength & Agility: Capable of cleanly severing a grown man’s arm with a knife and performing acrobatic feats (running across the Snake Devil’s body after dodging its tail) that prompted Katana Man to call her a “monkey.” She also achieved a perfect score on Dance Dance Mushroom.
- Knifemanship: Highly skilled with a knife; her primary and most reliable weapon.
- Marksmanship: Accurate enough to critically injure Katana Man and force Akane Sawatari to retreat with gunfire.
- Driving: Owns a car and has a license (primarily used to chauffeur her family).
- Hidden Combat Talent: Himeno noted that Kobeni is genuinely talented but held back by her own timidness. When fear overrides conscious thought she becomes one of the more effective fighters in the squad.
Relationships
- Family: Parents who forced her into Devil Hunting to fund her brother’s education; she continues supporting them financially despite her resentment. Has multiple older sisters and a younger brother (Nobana).
- Himeno: Tolerates her teasing and hugs; Himeno considered her talented.
- Hirokazu Arai: Worked alongside him; felt genuine remorse and gratitude after he shielded her despite her earlier accusations.
- Denji: Initially turned on him out of panic during the Eternity Devil incident; later interactions are more neutral/positive. She is one of the few people who can interpret Pochita’s garbled speech (“Hamburger”).
- Aki Hayakawa & Power: Standard squadmates; she panics around both of them at various points.
- Makima: Worked under her as a recruit; later left Public Safety after the Hell incident.
Notable Quotes
- “I can’t take it anymore… This job is going to drive me crazy…”
- “Isn’t that just normal though? There’s no such thing as a life free of bad things… except in your dreams…”
- #7Hirokazu Arai
Keys: Division 4 newbie, Arai, scarred cheek hunter, Hirokazu Arai, Himeno's trainee, Kobeni's partner, haiku hunter, Fox Devil recruit, Hirokazu
Hirokazu Arai is a minor supporting character in the Public Safety Saga of Chainsaw Man. A new-recruit Public Safety Devil Hunter of Tokyo Special Division 4 under Makima, he was partnered with Kobeni Higashiyama and trained for half a year by Himeno.
Appearance
Hirokazu is a young man (22 years old, 178 cm) with short spiky hair, a scar on his left cheek, and black round eyes. He is usually seen wearing the standard black Public Safety Devil Hunter suit and tie. At the Division 4 newbie welcome party he wore a casual shirt.
Personality
Hirokazu is earnest, serious, and holds high moral standards. He becomes flustered at the idea of Himeno offering a kiss as a mission reward, insisting a young woman shouldn’t give herself away before marriage. He cares deeply about his teammates—comforting Kobeni when she panics and calling out Power for laughing at her distress—yet remains mistrustful of Fiends and of Denji, even suggesting they hand Denji over to the Eternity Devil to save the rest of the team.
He considers himself good at looking after sick or vulnerable people (he regularly cares for his drunk mother after work and later helps Denji after the vomit-filled kiss with Himeno). Despite his drive, he is keenly aware of his own lack of talent and openly envies Denji’s abilities as a Devil Hunter. His hobby is writing haiku.
Backstory & Key History
Hirokazu was trained for approximately six months by Himeno before being assigned to Special Division 4 alongside Kobeni. He first appears as part of the group that rescues Denji from the Leech Devil, ordered by Aki to evacuate survivors.
He is then assigned to the six-person team (Aki, Himeno, Denji, Power, Kobeni, and himself) sent into Hotel Morin to deal with the Eternity Devil. Inside the hotel he is the first to notice the floor-number anomaly, tries to reassure Kobeni, and later panics enough to shut himself in a room. When the Eternity Devil offers freedom in exchange for Denji’s life, Hirokazu emerges and argues for accepting the deal. He helps restrain Denji so Kobeni can stab him, only for Aki to take the blade instead. After Denji defeats the Devil over three days, Hirokazu is left exhausted.
He attends the Division 4 newbie welcome party, introduces himself (age, hobby, Fox Devil contract), and later helps a nauseous Denji in the bathroom while admitting his envy.
During the Katana Man arc, he and Kobeni are ambushed in broad daylight by a disguised Yakuza assassin. Shot in the neck, Hirokazu uses his final moments to shield Kobeni with his body, sacrificing himself so she can survive, kill their attacker, and later save Denji.
Powers & Abilities
- Fox Devil Contract: He has a contract with the Fox Devil (price unknown). Unlike Aki, he is not shown successfully summoning it in combat; Himeno notes that what he lacks in actual ability he makes up for in drive.
- Drive & Determination: Himeno’s assessment of him is that raw talent is low but motivation is high. He is willing to push forward even when frightened.
- No exceptional physical or combat feats are shown beyond standard Devil Hunter training and his final protective act.
Relationships
- Kobeni Higashiyama: His partner. He tries to support her through panic attacks, defends her from Power’s mockery, and ultimately dies shielding her.
- Himeno: His trainer for half a year. She evaluates him as low on ability but high on drive.
- Aki Hayakawa: Senior and squad leader. Hirokazu follows his lead and is willing to challenge him when he believes the team’s survival is at stake.
- Denji: Mistrustful of him as a Hybrid/Fiend-adjacent being; suggests sacrificing him to the Eternity Devil, yet later helps him after the Himeno incident and admits envy of his talent.
- Power: Calls her out for laughing at Kobeni’s fear; remains wary of Fiends in general.
Notable Quotes
- “But I don’t have talent as a Devil Hunter like you do… I’m envious…”
- His flustered objection to Himeno offering a pre-marriage kiss as a reward.
- #8Angel Devil
Keys: ice cream devil, Angel Devil, armless angel, Angel, Division 4 devil, halo spear user, Aki's partner, village massacre devil, lifespan devil, winged devil
Angel (the Angel Devil) is a supporting character in the Public Safety Saga of Chainsaw Man. A Devil who embodies the fear of angels, he serves as a Public Safety Devil Hunter in Tokyo Special Division 4 and later becomes Aki Hayakawa’s partner. Despite being one of the division’s strongest members, extreme laziness and reluctance to use his power hold him back.
Appearance
Angel appears as a young, beautiful, androgynous male. He is almost always seen in the standard Public Safety Devil Hunter suit. After the International Assassins arc he loses both arms.
Personality
Angel is a rare Devil with virtually no innate hostility toward humans. He considers himself a Devil first and an angel second, and has stated that humans ought to die in pain—yet he frequently apologizes to and comforts the people whose lifespans he steals, suggesting a residual angelic affection he attributes to his nature. He is extremely lazy, dislikes being ordered around, and often claims he would rather die than work. He prefers to avoid combat when possible and is hesitant to use his lifespan-absorption ability because the people he kills appear in his dreams to blame him.
Socially withdrawn because of his lethal touch, he remains isolated from most of his colleagues; Aki is the first human who is not afraid to make physical contact with him. He is partial to soft-serve ice cream (capable of eating multiple cones in one sitting) but will eat almost anything, including zombie flesh or the corpses of other Devils. Over the course of the story he gradually moves from wanting a quick death so he no longer has to work, to desiring a quiet, ordinary human-like life and actively trying to keep Aki alive.
Backstory & Key History
After arriving in the human world, Angel’s earliest memories are of a peaceful coastal village that took him in. He formed a relationship with a young woman he described as “the one I loved, and the one who loved me.” Makima eventually arrived, forced him to demonstrate his power, and made him absorb the lifespans of everyone in the village—including the girl he loved. Due to Makima’s control, he forgot these events and was recruited as a Public Safety Devil Hunter.
He first appears during the Katana Man arc as part of the reinforced Special Division 4 team. After Himeno’s death he is assigned as Aki’s new partner. The two gradually form a genuine bond: Aki is willing to touch him, and Angel begins to care enough about Aki to want him to quit Devil Hunting and live a long, peaceful life. He participates in the Bomb Girl arc (throwing lifespan spears at Reze) and the International Assassins arc, where he loses both arms fighting in Hell against the Darkness Devil and Santa Claus’s forces.
Later, under Makima’s control, his remaining lifespan is forcibly used to create powerful weapons (including a 1,000-year spear) against Chainsaw Man. His suppressed memories of the village massacre eventually return, deepening his trauma and resentment toward Makima.
Powers & Abilities
- Standard Devil Abilities: Regeneration via blood, contracts, etc.
- Angelic Wings: White-feathered wings that allow flight and are tough enough to block gunfire (though bullets still cause him pain). Can be used as shields.
- Lifespan Absorption: By making direct skin-to-skin contact, Angel can siphon a human’s remaining lifespan and store it. Prolonged contact kills the victim painlessly. Even brief contact (such as Aki grabbing his hand) can cost months of life.
- Lifespan Weapons: Converted stored lifespan (measured in years) into physical weapons summoned through his halo. Known examples:
- Ordinary spears and swords of varying power.
- “Usage: Five Years” — a gold-handled single-edged sword that appears to kill instantly without leaving a visible wound.
- “Usage: Ten Years” — a cross-guarded single-edged sword.
- “Usage: 100 Years” — a red-hilted cleaver-like longsword (created while under Makima’s control).
- “Usage: 1,000 Years” — a massive blood-red spear powerful enough to defeat a weakened Chainsaw Devil (also created under Makima’s control).
- Combat Skill: Competent with spears (accurate rooftop throws) and swords. Superhuman reflexes sufficient to react to Quanxi’s speed (barely) and block bullets with his wings.
- Ranked by Makima as the second-strongest member of Special Division 4 after Kishibe; his laziness is the only reason he does not dominate more fights.
Relationships
- Aki Hayakawa: His partner and the first human unafraid to touch him. Angel grows to genuinely care for Aki, sacrifices lifespan to help him, urges him to quit Public Safety for a peaceful life, and tries to protect him from Makima.
- Makima: The one who forced him to massacre the village that accepted him, erased his memories, and later controlled him completely. He harbors deep, quiet resentment once the memories return.
- Other Division 4 members: Largely isolated due to his lethal touch; interacts little beyond professional necessity.
- The girl from the coastal village: The human he loved; her death (caused by his own forced power) is a core source of trauma.
Notable Quotes
- “Sometimes… the humans my power killed and turned into weapons show up in my dreams and blame me for doing it. If I just let you die, I have this feeling you’ll start haunting my dreams too. I also want to do everything I can to help you stay alive.”
- Statements that he would rather die than work.
- #9Beam
Keys: Shark Fiend, Denji's partner, Division 4 shark, trunks fiend, Lord Chainsaw's follower, shark-headed fiend, solid swimmer, Beam
Beam was the Shark Fiend and a Public Safety Devil Hunter of Tokyo Special Division 4. A supporting character in the Public Safety Saga, he is best known for his absolute, almost religious devotion to Denji / Chainsaw Man and for serving as Denji’s enthusiastic (and frequently self-sacrificing) partner during the Bomb Girl and International Assassins arcs.
Appearance
Beam inhabits the muscular body of a young man. As a Fiend, the top half of his head is replaced by a shark snout and dorsal fin; he has no visible eyes, short spiky black hair, and extremely sharp teeth. He exclusively wears swimming trunks.
In partial transformation his head becomes a massive multi-eyed shark head. In full Devil form his entire body turns into a shark-like creature with multiple long fins that function as legs.
Personality
Beam is eccentric, naive, and childishly innocent. Outside of his interactions with Denji he is violent, antisocial, and largely uninterested in other people. His defining trait is an intense, almost worshipful admiration for the Chainsaw Devil. He calls Denji “Lord Chainsaw,” follows even the most reckless plans without question, and prioritizes Denji’s survival above his own life—willingly offering his blood (even if it kills him) to revive him.
He loves fighting and will eagerly dive into hordes of zombies or enemies to eat them, yet he showed genuine fear when first facing Reze (the Bomb Hybrid), though he still fought when cornered. He is clumsy at times and has a strong sense of smell that lets him identify other Devils/Hybrids by scent.
Backstory & Key History
Beam first appears during the Katana Man arc as part of the Special Division 4 assault on Akane Sawatari’s hideout, bursting through walls and floors to devour zombies. After Power is temporarily sidelined from overconsuming blood, Beam requests (and is granted) the role of Denji’s partner.
He immediately becomes Denji’s shadow—swimming through floors and walls while on patrol, intervening when Reze attacks Denji on their “date,” and repeatedly risking (and taking) severe injuries to protect him. During the fight against Reze and the Typhoon Devil he transforms into his full shark form so Denji can ride him like a mount, using chainsaw chains as reins. He later dives into the ocean to rescue both Denji and Reze, then offers more blood so Denji can recover after Reze breaks his neck.
In the International Assassins arc Beam continues to protect Denji, saving him from Long and attempting to keep him alive while they flee through the department store. Dragged to Hell with the others, he is among those who have their arms severed by the Darkness Devil. Despite this, he crawls to Denji, feeds him blood from his own stumps, pulls his cord to revive him, and begs him to “grant our wish” moments before the Darkness Devil points at him and cuts him to pieces, killing him instantly.
He is later mentioned in a news broadcast by a civilian who witnessed Denji riding him during the Typhoon Devil battle.
Powers & Abilities
- Standard Fiend Abilities: Weaker than a full Devil but still possesses regeneration via blood and other basic Devil traits. Cannot form contracts.
- Intangibility / Solid Swimming: Can swim freely through solid objects such as walls and floors. Cannot bring other people or large objects with him.
- Devil Transformation:
- Partial: Head becomes a gigantic multi-eyed shark head with enormous biting power.
- Full: Entire body transforms into a shark-like form with multiple long fins used as legs; durable and fast enough to serve as a mount for Denji in combat.
- Enhanced Durability: Survives multiple point-blank explosions from Reze and continues moving afterward.
- Enhanced Smell: Can identify Devils and Hybrids by scent (recognized Reze as the Bomb Hybrid immediately).
Relationships
- Denji / Chainsaw Man: Absolute devotion. Beam treats him as a messianic figure (“Lord Chainsaw”), follows every order, repeatedly sacrifices his own body and blood to keep Denji alive, and dies while trying to revive him one last time.
- Other Division 4 members: Minimal interaction; he is antisocial toward nearly everyone except Denji.
- Reze: Recognized her as a threat by scent and fought her (poorly at first) to protect Denji.
- Makima: Follows her orders when given, but his primary loyalty is clearly to Denji.
Notable Quotes
- “That’s my Lord Chainsaw!! He’s the badass-est!!”
- “Lord Chainsaw… please revive… and grant our wish…”
- #10Galgali
Keys: Galgali, Violence Fiend, love and peace fiend, masked fiend, Kobeni's ice cream friend, Division 4 violence, plague doctor fiend
Galgali was the Violence Fiend and a Public Safety Devil Hunter of Tokyo Special Division 4. A supporting character in the Public Safety Saga, he is notable for the ironic contrast between his name/nature and his extremely polite, peace-loving personality.
Appearance
Galgali inhabits the corpse of a fairly thin man and is usually dressed in a hooded suit. His most distinctive feature is a plague-doctor-style gas mask that completely covers his face.
When the mask is removed he undergoes a dramatic transformation: he becomes much taller and heavily muscular, with spiky black hair and four empty eye sockets.
Personality
Despite being the Violence Fiend, Galgali is extremely polite, straightforward, and soft-spoken. He apologizes after hitting Beam in self-defense and politely warns the Spider Devil (mistaking her for a human woman) to evacuate a combat zone. He attributes this gentle demeanor to still retaining a large portion of his human host’s brain—an unusual trait for a Fiend.
He frequently declares that he is “all about love and peace.” He claims he cannot eat because of the mask but enjoys treating others to food so he can experience it vicariously through their reactions. He is calm, considerate, and shows genuine kindness (buying Kobeni ice cream, trying to de-escalate situations). Even when forced to fight at full power he remains composed.
Backstory & Key History
Galgali’s human host died under unknown circumstances. The only memory he retains is that Makima “saved” him (a claim that may itself be the result of her control). He serves as a non-human member of Special Division 4.
He first appears during the Katana Man arc raid on Akane Sawatari’s hideout, punching through hordes of zombies with his bare fists and accidentally clashing with Beam. In the Bomb Girl arc he responds to Aki’s call for reinforcements, kicks Reze off a car, and delivers a full-power kick strong enough to crack the ground—yet still fails to damage her. Recognizing they are outmatched, he prioritizes Kobeni’s safety and later intervenes to save Aki from one of Reze’s explosions. He even suggests giving the nearly blood-drained Reze a handicap out of fairness.
During the International Assassins arc he patrols with Kobeni, buys her ice cream, and calmly discusses his nature and limited memories. When the group is dragged to Hell, he asks Kobeni to remove his mask so he can fight at full strength against the Darkness Devil. Despite unleashing his true power he is ultimately killed by the Darkness Devil.
Powers & Abilities
- Standard Fiend Abilities: Cannot form contracts; possesses basic Devil regeneration and other standard traits, though weaker than a full Devil.
- Enhanced Strength: Extraordinary even among Fiends. His kicks can crack concrete and send opponents flying. The poison-dispensing mask he wears is specifically to keep this strength in check.
- Body Transformation: Can enlarge and massively strengthen individual limbs (or his entire body when unmasked), gaining significant muscle mass and power.
- Poison Resistance: Shows no ill effects from the constant poison released by his own mask.
- Hand-to-Hand Combat: Primary fighting style is unarmed. Capable of decapitating zombies with kicks and trading blows with powerful opponents such as Reze (though he is ultimately outmatched by higher-tier threats).
- When unmasked he reaches his full potential as the Violence Fiend, becoming significantly taller, more muscular, and far more destructive.
Relationships
- Kobeni Higashiyama: Treats her with consistent kindness. Buys her ice cream, listens to her stories, and fights alongside her. She is the one who removes his mask in Hell at his request.
- Beam: Brief, polite interaction after accidentally punching him; Galgali apologizes.
- Aki Hayakawa: Responds to his call for help against Reze and later saves his life from an explosion.
- Makima: The only figure from his fragmented past; he believes she saved him.
- Other Division 4 members: Professional and courteous; generally well-regarded for his calm demeanor.
Notable Quotes
- “But yeah, not a fan of violence. I’m all about love and peace! Peace!”
- Polite apologies and warnings issued even in the middle of combat.
- #11Princi
Keys: Makima's portal, Makima's summon, zipper face, Division 4 spider, Spider Devil, eight-legged hunter, Princi
Princi is the Spider Devil, a Devil who embodies the fear of spiders, and a Public Safety Devil Hunter of Tokyo Special Division 4. She is a minor supporting character in the Public Safety Saga, notable for her polite demeanor, absolute obedience to Makima, and unique ability to serve as a living portal.
Appearance
Princi resembles a young woman with waist-length black hair. She has eight spider-like legs ending in sharp, scythe-curved points capable of piercing flesh. A vertical zipper runs down the center of her face, with the pull tab located under her chin so it unzips upward. She normally wears a shirt, an elaborate bow-tie, and a knee-length skirt, giving her a neat, almost schoolgirl-like appearance when her legs are not fully extended.
Personality
Princi usually maintains a human-like form and presents herself as polite, docile, and proper. She works alongside humans as a Devil Hunter and shows no outward hostility in everyday interactions. Kishibe notes, however, that she will still kill people simply for looking at her the wrong way. She remains completely impassive in combat—showing no expression while slaughtering zombies or even after being mutilated by the Darkness Devil.
She is extremely devoted to Makima and follows her orders without hesitation, even when those orders put her in extreme danger or require personal sacrifice. Her loyalty appears absolute.
Backstory & Key History
Princi serves as one of the non-human members of Special Division 4. She first appears during the Katana Man arc raid on Akane Sawatari’s hideout, where Galgali briefly mistakes her for a human woman before she reveals her true nature by effortlessly cutting down zombies with her legs.
In the International Assassins arc she assists Makima and Beam in cleaning up Santa Claus’s doll puppets. Makima orders her to extract Denji no matter what and to recover the corpses of fallen allies. Later, after most of the group has been devastated by the Darkness Devil in Hell, Princi emerges from the ground and attempts to attack the Darkness Devil from behind. The entity severs most of her limbs. Despite her request that Makima stay away, Makima orders Princi to summon her; Princi’s body unzips and Makima emerges from inside her. After Makima tricks the Hell Devil into returning them to Earth, Princi is brought back as well.
In the Control Devil arc she is last seen limbless and under Makima’s control among the many people Makima is manipulating. Her ultimate fate after this point is unclear.
Powers & Abilities
- Standard Devil Abilities: Regeneration via blood, contracts, etc.
- Spider Physiology: Eight scythe-tipped legs sharp enough to pierce flesh and decimate zombies in a single strike. Can walk on walls and surfaces.
- Intangibility / Subterranean Movement: Can submerge into the ground and re-emerge to ambush enemies.
- Enhanced Strength: Sufficient to slaughter groups of zombies effortlessly.
- Summoning / Living Portal: Can unzip the zipper on her body to summon Makima (and possibly only Makima) directly to her location, even from Hell. She and Makima appear able to communicate across dimensions.
- Absolute obedience to Makima’s commands, functioning effectively as an extension of her will when required.
Relationships
- Makima: Absolute loyalty. Princi follows every order without question, serves as a living summoning conduit, and prioritizes Makima’s safety even when it costs her own body.
- Galgali (Violence Fiend): Brief interaction in which he mistakes her for a human; she shows no reaction.
- Beam & other Division 4 members: Professional cooperation; little personal interaction shown.
- Denji: Ordered by Makima to extract and protect him during the International Assassins arc.
- #12Yutaro Kurose
Keys: Yutaro Kurose, Punishment Devil contractor, Tendo's partner, scarred Kyoto man, Kurose, Aki's trainer, Kyoto hunter, Yutaro
Yutaro Kurose is a Public Safety Devil Hunter from Kyoto and a minor supporting character in the Public Safety Saga of Chainsaw Man. He is partnered with Michiko Tendo and briefly assists Special Division 4 during the Katana Man arc.
Appearance
Kurose is a man with short black hair who wears the standard Public Safety Devil Hunter uniform. He has a prominent horizontal scar across his face, a feature he shares with his partner Michiko Tendo.
Personality
Kurose is straightforward, somewhat blunt, and openly nervous around Makima. Like Tendo, he repeatedly insists he has no desire to join the Tokyo Special Divisions and wants to return to Kyoto as soon as possible. He has a noticeable regional accent that he deliberately softens when speaking with people from Tokyo.
Despite finding Aki annoying, he ultimately shows reluctant support for him, offering honest advice and even a can of Coca-Cola as a parting gesture. He is pragmatic about the Gun Devil, viewing the idea of killing it as unrealistic, and warns Aki that “everyone in the Special Divisions is insane.”
Backstory & Key History
Kurose’s life was ruined by the Gun Devil, which became his motivation for joining Public Safety. He never attempted to hunt it himself, considering the task impossible.
During the Katana Man arc he and Tendo wait at a Kyoto train station for Makima. After receiving word that she has been killed in an ambush, they are shocked when she arrives covered in blood but unharmed. Makima orders them to gather thirty life-sentence (or worse) convicts and accompany her to a shrine, where they are blindfolded while she carries out a remote attack. They later travel to Tokyo to help train Special Division 4 for one week only.
In Tokyo they visit the recovering Aki in the hospital, inform him that he has fallen out of favor with the Fox Devil, and later escort him to an underground facility to form a contract with the Future Devil. Before returning to Kyoto, Kurose leaves Aki with a final warning about the Special Divisions and a can of soda.
In the International Assassins arc, Kurose, Tendo, and a junior hunter named Subaru are summoned to Tokyo as additional guards for Denji. Their car is ambushed with road spikes; three American devil hunters fatally shoot all three of them and use a Skin Devil contract to impersonate Kurose.
During the Gun Devil arc, Kurose’s corpse is among those chained to Makima. His antemortem contract with the Punishment Devil (shared with Tendo) is used by Makima against the Gun Devil.
Powers & Abilities
- Punishment Devil Contract: Kurose holds a contract with the Punishment Devil (price unknown). The exact abilities granted are not detailed in the story, but the contract is later accessed by Makima after his death and used in the fight against the Gun Devil.
- Standard Public Safety training and combat competency sufficient to be assigned training and escort duties.
Relationships
- Michiko Tendo: His partner from Kyoto Public Safety. The two work closely together and share the same facial scar and wariness of Makima.
- Aki Hayakawa: Briefly serves as one of Aki’s trainers. Finds him irritating but ultimately roots for him and offers sincere (if blunt) advice.
- Makima: Deeply uneasy around her; repeatedly emphasizes that he does not want to join her Special Division.
- Subaru: A junior Kyoto hunter who accompanies them on their final mission.
Notable Quotes
- “Aki!! Even though you tick me off, I’m rooting for you!! I’ll leave you with one last piece of advice!! Everyone in the Special Divisions is insane! So be careful!”
- His repeated insistence that he and Tendo are only in Tokyo temporarily and do not want to join the Special Division.
- #13Michiko Tendo
Keys: Kyoto huntress, Punishment Devil contractor, Tendo, Michiko, scarred Kyoto woman, Michiko Tendo, Kurose's partner, Aki's trainer
Michiko Tendo is a Public Safety Devil Hunter from Kyoto and a minor supporting character in the Public Safety Saga of Chainsaw Man. She is partnered with Yutaro Kurose and briefly assists Special Division 4 during the Katana Man arc.
Appearance
Tendo is a tall woman with brown hair tied back in a messy ponytail, with long side bangs that reach past her shoulders. She wears the standard Public Safety Devil Hunter uniform and has a horizontal scar across her face—the same feature shared by her partner Yutaro Kurose.
Personality
Like Kurose, Tendo is openly nervous around Makima and repeatedly insists that she has no interest in joining the Tokyo Special Divisions. She is more composed and professional than her partner, showing a degree of sensitivity (suggesting they give Aki space when they find him crying) and occasionally reining in Kurose’s more casual remarks. She is pragmatic about the realities of Devil Hunting and shares Kurose’s view that killing the Gun Devil is essentially impossible.
Backstory & Key History
Tendo’s life was ruined by the Gun Devil, which became her motivation for joining Public Safety. Like Kurose, she never attempted to hunt it herself, considering the task impossible.
During the Katana Man arc she and Kurose wait at a Kyoto train station for Makima. After receiving reports that Makima has been killed in an ambush, they are stunned when she arrives covered in blood but unharmed. Makima orders Tendo to rent a high-altitude shrine so she can assist the Special Divisions remotely. The pair are blindfolded while Makima carries out her attack; Tendo explains to Kurose that ordinary hunters are not authorized to know which Devils Makima is contracted with.
They later travel to Tokyo to help train Special Division 4 for one week only. At the hospital they meet the recovering Aki, introduce themselves as trainers sent by Makima, and later escort him to an underground facility to form a contract with the Future Devil. Tendo expresses mild surprise that Aki chooses to remain in the Special Division and notes that he will need a stronger contract if he wants to stay useful. After the contract is made, she and Kurose plan to go sightseeing before returning to Kyoto.
In the International Assassins arc, Tendo, Kurose, and a junior Kyoto hunter named Subaru are summoned to Tokyo as additional guards for Denji. Their car is ambushed with road spikes; three American devil hunters fatally shoot all three of them. One of the assassins (Joey) comments that it was a shame they had to kill a woman.
During the Gun Devil arc, Tendo’s corpse is among those chained to Makima. Her antemortem contract with the Punishment Devil (shared with Kurose) is used by Makima against the Gun Devil.
Powers & Abilities
- Punishment Devil Contract: Tendo holds a contract with the Punishment Devil (price unknown). The exact abilities are not detailed in the story, but the contract is later accessed by Makima after her death and used in the fight against the Gun Devil.
- Standard Public Safety training and combat competency sufficient for training and escort assignments.
Relationships
- Yutaro Kurose: Her partner from Kyoto Public Safety. The two work closely, share the same facial scar, and both want nothing to do with the Special Divisions.
- Aki Hayakawa: Briefly serves as one of his trainers. Shows professional concern and a degree of empathy toward him.
- Makima: Deeply uneasy around her; repeatedly emphasizes that her presence in Tokyo is temporary and that she does not want to join the Special Division.
- Subaru: A junior Kyoto hunter who accompanies them on their final mission.
- #14Hirofumi Yoshida
Keys: Fourth East transfer, school bodyguard, Octopus Devil contractor, Denji's handler, Yoshida, Division 7 hunter, earring hunter, Nayuta's kidnapper, Hirofumi, Hirofumi Yoshida
Hirofumi Yoshida is a supporting character who first appears in the International Assassins arc and becomes a major recurring figure in the Academy Saga of Chainsaw Man. Formerly a private Devil Hunter regarded by Makima as a high-class bodyguard specialist (alongside Kusakabe and Tamaoki), he later joins Public Safety (Tokyo Special Division 7) and is tasked with monitoring Denji while attending Fourth East High School.
Appearance
Yoshida has mid-length smooth black hair that reaches the top of his neck, dark eyes, a slim face, and a beauty mark under his lips. He has eight piercings on his left ear (usually only six are visible beneath his hair), likely referencing his Octopus Devil contract. As a civilian/private hunter he wears a casual unbuttoned light jacket and dark pants. At school he wears the Fourth East High uniform neatly buttoned. On Public Safety missions he wears the standard suit and tie.
Personality
Yoshida is playful, mischievous, and almost always smiling. He enjoys light conversation even in the middle of combat and has a habit of watching others eat rather than eating himself. Beneath the cheerful exterior he is ruthless and pragmatic—capable of coldly executing enemies (such as one of the Immortal Brothers) and of using threats, kidnapping, or hostages when necessary to fulfill his mission.
He takes his duties seriously, keeps his word, and is willing to act as either Denji’s strict handler or his supportive “friend” depending on what the situation requires. He shows a clear dislike of pointless violence among ordinary students and a deeper unease with death itself, at one point asking whether Chainsaw Man could consume the Death Devil for the sake of humanity. He is straightforward, dislikes beating around the bush, and becomes visibly frustrated when Denji refuses to cooperate. In his final moments he expresses genuine regret over never having been able to live as a normal student and thanks Denji for the time they spent together.
Backstory & Key History
As a private Devil Hunter, Yoshida was already highly regarded by Makima. During the International Assassins arc he is among the hunters assigned to protect Denji. He battles Quanxi (holding his own briefly in hand-to-hand combat before being defeated), survives the chaos of the department-store battle and the trip to Hell, and later discusses Makima’s true nature with Kishibe.
In the Academy Saga he enrolls at Fourth East High School specifically to keep tabs on Denji and prevent him from publicly revealing his identity as Chainsaw Man. He repeatedly intervenes—sometimes gently, sometimes with force—to stop Denji from transforming or speaking out. He works alongside Fumiko Mifune, joins the school’s Devil Hunter Club, assists against threats such as the Eternity Devil at the aquarium, and continues balancing his dual roles as student and Public Safety operative. Over time a genuine (if complicated) bond forms with Denji. His story ends with a final farewell in which he thanks Denji for the school days they shared.
Powers & Abilities
- Octopus Devil Contract (price unknown):
- Tentacle Summoning: By crossing his middle and index fingers he summons tentacles that emerge from ink clouds. These can bind, attack, protect him, or catch him from falls. He can also use them for scouting.
- Ink: Saying “Ink” causes a large black smokescreen that blinds opponents.
- Grab: Commands a tentacle to latch onto and pull a target.
- Swallow: Commands the Octopus Devil to swallow targets whole (requires greater cost).
- Aging Devil Contract: Later forms a contract with the Aging Devil in exchange for escaping Aging’s World and never fighting each other again.
- Hand-to-Hand Combat: Skilled enough to briefly hold his own against Quanxi and draw blood from her.
- Swordsmanship: Proficient; capable of cleanly severing a limb before the target can react.
- Strategic Intelligence: Excellent tactical sense; knows when to act, when to stay hidden, and when to retreat.
Relationships
- Denji: Primary assignment. Acts as both strict handler and reluctant friend. Prevents Denji from revealing his identity while also offering support and company. Their final interaction is surprisingly warm.
- Fumiko Mifune: Public Safety colleague; he keeps her focused on missions.
- Kishibe: Discusses Makima’s true motives with him; treats him with professional respect.
- Quanxi: Fought her during the International Assassins arc and requested a rematch after recovering.
- Nayuta: Used as leverage against Denji at one point (threat of having her killed).
- Asa Mitaka / Yoru: Interacts with them at school and during Devil Hunter Club activities; later confronts Yoru directly.
- Fami: Interrogates her about the Prophecy of Nostradamus and her future plans.
Notable Quotes
- “I came to say goodbye. We won’t meet again. Thanks, Denji. I had tons of fun going to school with you.”
- Warnings to Denji that he will interfere if Denji tries to reveal himself as Chainsaw Man.
- Octopus Devil Contract (price unknown):
- #15Kusakabe
Keys: Denji's bodyguard, petrifying hunter, Tamaoki's partner, polite speech stickler, Stone Devil contractor, Kusakabe
Kusakabe was a Public Safety Devil Hunter who served during the International Assassins arc of Chainsaw Man. He was assigned as part of the protective detail for Denji after his identity became public knowledge and foreign assassins began targeting him. Makima regarded him as one of the best bodyguards available.
Appearance
Kusakabe has dirty blonde or light brown hair that reaches his upper neck. He wears black glasses and has hazel or yellow eyes with a slightly muted hue. Like most Public Safety Devil Hunters he dresses in a standard black suit.
Personality
Kusakabe is cautious, rigorous, and highly disciplined. He becomes furious when Denji attempts to eat food that has fallen on the ground and also scolds Power about eating her vegetables. He insists on polite speech and strict adherence to his meticulously planned patrol routes. He takes his mission seriously, remains prepared, and prioritizes the safety of his assigned charge.
Backstory & Key History
When Makima learns that Denji’s existence has been exposed in the media and that international assassins are coming for him, she assembles a team of Public Safety Devil Hunters that includes Kusakabe. Tamaoki is noted as his partner/buddy. Kusakabe takes charge of Denji’s protection detail, demanding proper etiquette and following precise routes.
While escorting Denji through a department store, the group is attacked by Santa Claus’s dolls. Kusakabe uses his Stone Devil contract to petrify several of them. The team continues fleeing until Quanxi arrives, swiftly overpowering Kusakabe and Tamaoki along with the rest of the group.
Later, during the catastrophic encounter with the Darkness Devil in Hell, Kusakabe loses both arms in the initial assault. Despite the injury he manages to draw a Stone Devil contract circle in his own blood and attempts to petrify the Darkness Devil. The Stone Devil is instead grabbed, turned to stone, and shattered by the Darkness Devil. Kusakabe himself is then petrified and shatters, resulting in his death.
Powers & Abilities
- Stone Devil Contract: For an unknown price, Kusakabe can petrify targets by standing inside a special circle (which he can draw himself) and blowing through a hole formed by his hand. The ability releases a mist that turns opponents to stone. He notes that the technique is dangerous because it does not distinguish between enemies and nearby allies. He is capable of using a simpler version of the circle, though the full effects of the simplified form were never demonstrated due to his death.
Relationships
- Makima: Superior who selected him as one of the best bodyguards for Denji’s protection detail.
- Tamaoki: Partner/buddy within Public Safety.
- Denji: Assigned protectee; Kusakabe is strict with him regarding manners and safety protocols.
- Power: Interacts with her in a disciplinary capacity (scolding her about vegetables).
- Quanxi: Overpowers him during the department-store ambush.
Notable Quotes
- Insistence that Denji speak to him politely and follow his detailed instructions.
- Anger over Denji trying to eat dropped food and Power refusing vegetables.
- #16Tamaoki
Keys: Denji's escort, forehead mole hunter, Miyagi hunter, Kusakabe's partner, Tamaoki
Tamaoki was a Public Safety Devil Hunter who served during the International Assassins arc of Chainsaw Man. He was partnered with Kusakabe and assigned to the protective detail for Denji after his identity became public and foreign assassins began targeting him.
Appearance
Tamaoki is a tall man of average build. He has short hair, faint eyebrows, several eye bags, and a distinctive mole on his forehead. He wears the standard Public Safety Devil Hunter uniform (black suit).
Personality
Tamaoki is serious, professional, and highly focused on his duty to protect Denji. He apologizes for using Denji as bait when necessary and demonstrates a strong knowledge base regarding Devils, contracts, and enemy tactics. He is pragmatic (stating that people turned into dolls by the Doll Devil cannot be restored) and observant, quickly identifying threats and explaining them to the group. He shows care for proper conduct (advising Denji not to eat food off the floor) while remaining calm and analytical under pressure.
Backstory & Key History
When Makima learns that Denji’s existence has been exposed in the media and that international assassins are coming, she assembles additional Public Safety Devil Hunters, including Tamaoki and his partner Kusakabe (both from Miyagi). They join the protection detail alongside others.
Tamaoki introduces himself as Kusakabe’s partner and helps escort Denji. At a burger shop and later a department store, he correctly identifies one of the American assassins (disguised via the Skin Devil contract) after Power attacks him, and warns that the remaining brothers are nearby. When Santa Claus’s dolls begin pursuing the group, Tamaoki helps the team navigate the threat. Quanxi then intervenes, overpowering the group; Tamaoki is kicked in the face and rendered unconscious.
He is later taken to Hell as part of the larger confrontation. During the battle with the Darkness Devil he is decapitated and bisected, resulting in his death.
Powers & Abilities
- Strategic Intelligence: Demonstrates strong analytical skills in combat and threat assessment. He quickly identifies enemy Devil contracts (Skin Devil), recognizes the nature of Doll Devil victims by their footsteps, understands Angel Devil’s lifespan-based weapons, and contributes tactically while fighting the doll army.
- No specific Devil contract is detailed for him in the series; he relies on standard Public Safety training, observation, and coordination with partners such as Kusakabe.
Relationships
- Kusakabe: Partner and buddy within Public Safety; the two are dispatched together and fight side-by-side.
- Denji: Assigned protectee. Tamaoki takes the duty seriously, apologizes for using him as bait, and offers practical advice.
- Makima: Superior who summoned him for the high-priority protection mission.
- Quanxi: Overpowers him during the department-store ambush.
- Darkness Devil: Ultimate cause of his death in Hell.
Notable Quotes
- Apology for using Denji as bait.
- Practical advice (e.g., not eating food off the floor).
- #17Makima
Keys: necessary evil, Nayuta's previous life, Prime Minister's dog, Conquest Devil, Denji's boss, Division 4 chief, Four Horsemen, Control Devil, Chainsaw Man fanatic, Denji's first love, ring-eyed woman, Makima
Makima is the main antagonist of the Public Safety Saga in Chainsaw Man. Posing as a high-ranking Public Safety Devil Hunter and the Chief Cabinet Secretary’s personal agent, she is later revealed to be the Control Devil (embodying control/conquest), one of the Four Horsemen. After her death she reincarnates as Nayuta.
Appearance
Makima appears as a human woman in her twenties of slight build and slightly above-average height. She has long light-red/pale-auburn hair usually kept in a loose braid, with bangs just past her eyebrows and two longer side bangs framing her face. Her most distinctive feature is her yellow eyes containing multiple concentric red rings—the only overt sign of her Devil nature. She typically wears a calm, almost constant smile.
Her standard attire is a white long-sleeved shirt, black tie, black pants, and brown shoes; in earlier arcs she often adds a long black trenchcoat.
Personality
On the surface Makima is kind, gentle, socially graceful, and perpetually smiling. She speaks in a calm, professional tone and projects quiet confidence even in crisis. This is a carefully maintained façade.
In truth she is coldly Machiavellian, calculating, and ruthlessly utilitarian. She views nearly everyone as “dogs”—tools to be used, controlled, or discarded in service of her goals. She manipulates through a mixture of genuine-seeming kindness, romantic/sexual promises, and the constant threat of extermination. She admits she is not a good person and frames herself as a “necessary evil” collared by the state. Failure does not particularly trouble her; she often benefits regardless of whether a plan succeeds or fails.
She is an extreme fan of the Chainsaw Devil (“Hero of Hell”), fascinated by its ability to erase concepts by consuming Devils. Her stated goal is to bring Chainsaw Man under her control to create a better world free of fear, death, and “bad” movies. Her deeper, more personal desire is to form an equal, lasting bond with Pochita—something the Control Devil has always been denied.
Backstory & Key History
As one of the Four Horsemen, the Control Devil (alongside her sisters and the Weapon Devils) once fought Chainsaw Man in Hell. During that battle Pochita vanished after changing form and escaping to Earth. The Horsemen later arrived on Earth; the Control Devil assumed the human identity “Makima” and rose to lead Tokyo Special Division 4 within Japan’s Public Safety.
She forced the Angel Devil to demonstrate his power, causing the massacre of an entire coastal village (including the woman Angel loved) and then erased his memories. She recruited Denji after he became Chainsaw Man, installed him in Special Division 4, and engineered a surrogate family with Aki and Power specifically so she could later destroy it. She orchestrated or allowed numerous tragedies (including the deaths of Himeno, Aki, and Power) to break Denji’s spirit, sever his contract with Pochita, and reclaim the Chainsaw Devil.
After revealing her true nature, she battled Pochita/Chainsaw Man directly. Denji ultimately defeated her by “killing her out of love” (bypassing her immortality contract) and consuming her body. She reincarnated first in Hell and then on Earth in China as the child Nayuta.
Powers & Abilities
- Standard Devil Abilities: Contracts, regeneration via blood, etc.
- Contract with the Japanese Prime Minister: Any fatal injury or misfortune directed at Makima is redirected as an illness or accident onto a random Japanese citizen, granting her near-immortality (she has been “killed” at least 26 times before the Gun Devil confrontation alone). This contract can be circumvented by acts perceived as love rather than attacks.
- Control: She can dominate any being she considers inferior (humans, animals, Devils, Fiends, Hybrids). Controlled subjects become obedient puppets, lose memories of the control period, and can have their personalities subtly altered. She can channel the powers of controlled (even deceased) beings through chains connected to her body, using multiple abilities simultaneously or creating amalgamations. She can also issue commands to a dead person’s contracted Devils by touching their head.
- Remote Sensing & Travel: Borrows the senses of controlled small animals (rats, birds, etc.) to eavesdrop globally (and possibly into Hell). Can form a human-shaped mass of rats to teleport herself. Can be summoned via Princi’s zipper even across dimensions.
- Force Manipulation: Projects invisible force in various ways—crushing targets from extreme range (requires a high place, the target’s name, and a human sacrifice), firing finger-point “Bang!” projectiles capable of heavily damaging Primal Devils or launching opponents into the atmosphere, decapitating nearby targets, and limited telekinesis.
- Immense Physical Strength & Combat Skill: Capable of overwhelming a weakened Pochita in hand-to-hand combat and shattering his chainsaws.
- Enhanced Smell: Primarily identifies individuals by scent rather than sight.
- High Intelligence & Manipulation: Master strategist and psychological manipulator who plans years ahead.
Relationships
- Pochita / Chainsaw Man: The only being she appears to regard as an equal and for whom she feels genuine (obsessive) affection. Her entire scheme is designed either to control him or to be consumed by him.
- Denji: Treated purely as a tool and “pet.” She never memorized his scent and felt no personal attachment, yet he continued to love her even after learning the truth.
- Aki Hayakawa & Power: Useful pawns whose happiness she deliberately cultivated so she could later destroy it and break Denji.
- Angel Devil, Princi, and other subordinates: Controlled assets or willing tools; she shows no regard for their autonomy or survival.
- Kishibe: One of the few who sees through her early; she remains wary of him.
- The other Horsemen: Her sisters; their relationships are complex and largely off-screen in Part 1.
Notable Quotes
- “Your necessary evil is just an excuse to justify your own crimes. Those excuses are unnecessary to society. The truly necessary evils are always kept collared and controlled by the state.”
- “I want to use Chainsaw Man to create a better world.”
- #18Katana Man
Keys: Samurai Sword, Denji's nemesis, Division 7 hybrid, gakuran hybrid, yakuza hybrid, Debt Collector's grandson, Katana Hybrid, iai slasher, Akane's partner, Katana Man
Katana Man (real name unknown), officially known as Samurai Sword, is a Devil-Human Hybrid who merged with the Katana Devil. He serves as the main antagonist of the Katana Man arc and a minor antagonist in the Control Devil arc of the Public Safety Saga. He later reappears in the Academy Saga as a supporting character temporarily affiliated with Public Safety’s Tokyo Special Division 7.
Appearance
In human form, Katana Man is a very tall, muscular young man with short black hair, dark eyes, and prominent sideburns. During his debut he wears a large leather trench coat over a dark military-style uniform, complete with a utility belt, pouches, and a scabbard. While under Makima’s control he wears the standard Public Safety suit and tie.
In Hybrid form, large katana blades protrude from both arms. His face becomes a demonic, skinless visage with dark flesh and an oversized, pointed jaw without lips. A katana blade pierces through his forehead (handle protruding from the back of his head), and he wears a gakuran-style hat with a decorative emblem.
Personality
Katana Man is selfish, stubborn, cruel, and single-mindedly vengeful. His entire motivation revolves around forcing Denji to apologize for (and die for) killing his grandfather. He is willing to sacrifice civilians and even his own allies if it helps him reach Denji. He refuses to believe Denji’s explanation that the grandfather had already been turned into a zombie, dismissing it as a lie.
He holds a highly romanticized and delusional view of the Yakuza, seeing them as the “good guys” who protect Japan from behind the scenes and viewing his grandfather as a man of principle despite the old man’s crimes. He believes he still possesses a human conscience (claiming he sleeps poorly after killing zombies) in contrast to Denji. He has a strong dislike of religion and of what he sees as modern “unmanly” behavior. His hatred of Denji/Chainsaw Man is so absolute that in Part 2 he will disregard orders and even sabotage his own long-term goals if it gives him a chance to confront his nemesis.
Backstory & Key History
As a child he was spoiled by his Yakuza grandfather, who used drug money to give him expensive food and whatever he wanted. After learning that Denji had killed his grandfather, Katana Man sought revenge. Unaware that the Zombie Devil had already turned the old man into a mindless zombie, he arranged with Akane Sawatari to have his human heart replaced with the Katana Devil’s heart, becoming a Hybrid.
In the Katana Man arc he and Akane launch a coordinated assault on Special Division 4. He ambushes Denji, Aki, Himeno, and Power in a restaurant, shoots them, battles Aki (surviving the Curse Devil through Akane’s intervention), cuts down multiple hunters, and later fights Denji on a train. Denji ultimately bisects him. He is arrested but later brainwashed by Makima and forced to serve in her Special Division 5 of weapon Hybrids against the full-powered Chainsaw Devil.
In the Academy Saga he has joined Public Safety (Special Division 7) with the dual agenda of eventually reviving his grandfather’s Yakuza syndicate and killing Denji. His hatred remains undiminished; he prioritizes confronting Chainsaw Man even when it means betraying orders.
Powers & Abilities
- Hybrid Transformation: Removes his left hand to reveal a katana from the stump, transforming into his Hybrid form. Removing the katana undoes the transformation and leaves him unable to transform again for a cooldown period.
- Augmented Strength, Speed & Durability: Can cut through walls, Fox Devil flesh, and Public Safety uniforms. Survives being thrown through buildings, falling from heights, and being swallowed by the Fox Devil.
- Sword-Draw Dash (Iaijutsu): Signature technique. Crouches and dashes forward at speeds faster than the eye can follow, delivering devastating slashes that often sever limbs or bisect opponents. The damage (both dealt and received) appears with a slight delay. Can be used repeatedly.
- Blood Consumption & Regeneration: Restores health by drinking blood; can regenerate from severe injuries including bisection.
- Nigh-Immortality: Extremely difficult to kill permanently. Can be revived by removing the left hand even after apparent death (including after the Curse Devil’s attack).
- Marksmanship & Swordsmanship: Competent with firearms in human form and highly skilled with his arm blades in Hybrid form.
Relationships
- Denji / Chainsaw Man: Arch-nemesis. Obsessed with forcing an apology and extracting revenge for his grandfather’s death. Hatred only intensifies over time.
- Akane Sawatari: Ally and the one who performed the heart-replacement surgery that made him a Hybrid. Worked closely with her during the assault on Division 4.
- Grandfather (Debt Collector): Deeply loved and idealized; the entire motivation for his revenge.
- Makima: Later controlled and used as a weapon Hybrid against Chainsaw Man.
- Public Safety (Part 2): Temporary affiliation with Special Division 7, which he is willing to betray for the chance to fight Denji.
Notable Quotes
- “If Granddad were here, he’d never stand for running away. Plus, that damn Denji is in Division 4… Next time, I’ll rip out his heart!”
- “You’re the only one… who doesn’t have a human heart anymore. If you have any semblance of a human conscience left… how about you let us kill you without a fight?”
- #19Akane Sawatari
Keys: Sawatari, fingernail contractor, zombie army handler, Akane Sawatari, Katana Man's partner, Akane, red hoodie girl, Snake Devil contractor, Gun Devil contractor
Akane Sawatari was a former civilian Devil Hunter who allied herself with the Gun Devil and partnered with Katana Man. She serves as the secondary antagonist of the Katana Man arc in the Public Safety Saga of Chainsaw Man. She held a contract with the Snake Devil.
Appearance
Akane is a petite young woman with short blonde hair that has dark brown roots. Her red eyes have distinctive slit pupils resembling a snake’s. She typically maintains a neutral or bored expression and keeps her hands in the pockets of her oversized red hoodie. She wears black shorts and orange-and-white Nike Air Max 97s. In one photo she is seen in a tracksuit while dealing with firearms. When her corpse is later used by Makima she appears in the standard Public Safety suit.
Personality
Akane is normally calm, cool-headed, and professional, treating the large-scale assault on Special Division 4 as a routine operation. She remains composed under most circumstances and gives clear, pragmatic orders. However, she can panic when events spiral beyond her control—most notably when Makima begins remotely crushing her subordinates. She habitually keeps her hands in her pockets, likely to conceal the bloody nail beds left by her Snake Devil contract sacrifices.
Backstory & Key History
At some point Akane arranged with Katana Man to surgically replace his human heart with the Katana Devil’s heart, turning him into a Hybrid. She later formed a contract with the Gun Devil (details of the price remain unknown) and worked with Yakuza forces to distribute firearms and cultivate a zombie army via the Zombie Devil.
During the Katana Man arc she acts as Katana Man’s primary support. After Aki defeats Katana Man with the Curse Devil, she casually revives him and orders him to finish the job. When Himeno unleashes the full Ghost Devil, Akane has the Snake Devil swallow it almost completely, then resurrects Katana Man again while reminding him not to damage Denji’s heart. She coordinates reinforcements by radio and later attempts to extract the defeated Denji, only for Makima to begin crushing her entire support network from Kyoto. Panicking, she tries to flee with Katana Man but is confronted by Kobeni, who severs Katana Man’s hand and forces them to retreat without their prize.
At their hideout she prepares a final stand with the Yakuza’s zombie army, planning to kill as many Public Safety hunters as possible and steal Denji’s heart before escaping via the Snake Devil. When Aki reaches her, she has the Snake Devil spit out the previously absorbed Ghost Devil to fight for her. After Aki defeats it, Kobeni holds a knife to her throat and captures her. Shortly afterward the Snake Devil kills her—an involuntary suicide clause in her Gun Devil contract designed to prevent interrogation. Makima later confirms this to Public Safety.
In the Gun Devil arc her corpse is among those chained to Makima, and her antemortem Snake Devil contract is used against the Gun Devil.
Powers & Abilities
- Snake Devil Contract (price: one fingernail per use; leaves the nail bed exposed):
- “Swallow it whole” (Marunomi): Fully summons the Snake Devil to absorb a target (used to devour most of the Ghost Devil).
- “Spit it out” (Hakidashi): Releases a previously absorbed being, which can then fight under her command (used to deploy the Ghost Devil against Aki). Causes internal damage (nosebleeds).
- “Tail” (Shippo): Summons the Snake Devil’s tail for attack or defense.
- Requires specific hand gestures; restraining her hands prevents use.
- Contains an involuntary suicide clause: if captured, the Snake Devil kills her to protect information.
- Competent tactical coordination and battlefield support skills.
- Capable of performing (or arranging) the complex surgery required to create a Hybrid.
Relationships
- Katana Man: Primary partner and collaborator. She performed the heart-replacement surgery that made him a Hybrid and repeatedly revived and supported him in combat. She tries to keep his vengeful temper in check.
- Gun Devil: Contractor; the exact terms are unknown, but the deal included an automatic suicide clause upon capture.
- Yakuza / Zombie Devil forces: Allied with them to obtain firearms and a zombie army.
- Special Division 4 (especially Aki, Himeno, Kobeni, Denji): Primary targets of the assault she helps orchestrate.
- Makima: Indirectly responsible for the collapse of Akane’s operation; later uses Akane’s corpse and contract as a tool.
Notable Quotes
- “We’re prepared to engage the enemy right here. Now keep quiet.”
- Calm compliments to Aki on his use of the Curse Devil before casually reviving Katana Man.
- Snake Devil Contract (price: one fingernail per use; leaves the nail bed exposed):
- #20Reze
Keys: Typhoon Devil's master, grenade pin girl, Denji's date, Soviet hybrid, Makima's prisoner, Bomb Girl, Reze, Bomb Hybrid, café girl
Reze, also known as Bomb Girl, is the Bomb Devil Hybrid from the Soviet Union. She was sent to Japan with the mission of stealing Chainsaw Man’s heart. She serves as the titular main antagonist of the Bomb Girl arc and a minor antagonist in the Control Devil arc of Chainsaw Man.
Appearance
In human form Reze appears as a slender young woman with shoulder-length purple hair and emerald-green eyes. She is frequently shown blushing. She wears a choker that conceals the grenade pin embedded in her neck, which she pulls to transform. Early appearances include a loose shirt with a bell design and backpack, a café apron while working at Crossroads, and later a sleeveless white blouse with a dark ribbon tie, black high-waisted shorts, thigh-high stockings, and brown loafers. Under Makima’s control she wears the standard Public Safety suit (without the choker).
In Hybrid form her body takes on the appearance of an atomic bomb (strongly reminiscent of the Fat Man bomb). Her teeth become sharp and angular, bomb fuses cover her arms like sleeves, and sticks of dynamite form part of an apron-like structure. She can appear partially or fully nude depending on the state of the fight, with the dynamite apron remaining.
Personality
Reze initially presents herself as a kind, gentle, enthusiastic girl who quickly develops a crush on Denji. She laughs at his jokes, teases him affectionately, shows concern for his lack of schooling, and offers to teach him everything he doesn’t know. This persona is a carefully trained façade designed to lower his guard.
Beneath the act she is a highly trained, manipulative, and lethal operative who can kill without hesitation when the mission requires it. She does not particularly enjoy killing and prefers to avoid unnecessary violence. Despite the mission, she develops genuine (if conflicted) feelings for Denji, empathizing with his lack of a normal childhood and ultimately missing her escape train to meet him again. In her final conscious moments she admits she has never gone to school either.
Backstory & Key History
Reze was one of many children taken by the Soviet Union and subjected to harsh military training and scientific experiments to create super-soldiers. A portion of the Bomb Devil was implanted in her, turning her into a Hybrid.
She is sent to Japan undercover, taking a job at the café Crossroads. She encounters Denji in a phone booth during the rain, begins a relationship with him, teaches him to swim, and invites him to night school. Once her cover is threatened she reveals her true identity, transforms, and launches a large-scale attack to claim his heart. She battles Denji, Beam, Aki, and other Public Safety forces across the city, using explosions, decoys, and relentless aggression.
After a prolonged fight Denji chains her and throws her into the sea (water nullifies her explosions). She survives and heads to the café at noon as Denji requested, but is fatally wounded by Angel Devil under Makima’s orders before she can meet him. In her last moments she wonders why she didn’t kill Denji the first time they met and admits they share the same lack of a normal education.
Despite her apparent death she is later recovered, brainwashed by Makima, and forced to fight as part of Special Division 5 against the fully powered Chainsaw Devil.
Powers & Abilities
- Hybrid Transformation: Pulling the pin in her neck causes an explosion that transforms her into the Bomb Hybrid. She can also detonate only her head as a decoy while remotely controlling the headless body.
- Explosion Creation: Generates powerful explosions capable of destroying vehicles, buildings, and roads. She is unharmed by her own blasts.
- Explosive Propulsion: Uses explosions from her limbs for enhanced punches, kicks, flight, and high-speed movement.
- Explosive Sparks: Flicks sparks from her fingers that explode on impact (lethal to ordinary humans).
- Self-Detonation / Torpedo Limbs: Turns body parts into bombs or transforms limbs into torpedoes without permanent damage.
- Enhanced Strength, Speed & Durability: Even in human form she can break bones, choke adults to death, and slice through Denji’s body parts before he can react. In Hybrid form she withstands powerful attacks and high-velocity impacts.
- Blood Consumption & Nigh-Immortality: Regenerates by drinking blood; can survive extreme injuries and be revived by pulling her pin.
- Combat Skills: Expert knife user and hand-to-hand fighter. Bilingual (Japanese and Russian).
Weaknesses
- Water: Moisture prevents her from generating the spark needed for explosions, severely limiting her Hybrid powers.
Relationships
- Denji: Primary target and the person she develops genuine conflicting feelings for. Their brief relationship is one of the most emotionally complex in the Public Safety Saga.
- Soviet Union / Gun Devil affiliates: Her original handlers and the source of her mission.
- Makima: Later controls and uses her as a weapon Hybrid.
- Beam, Aki, Angel Devil, Violence Fiend: Combat opponents during the Bomb Girl arc.
- Café Crossroads owner: Temporary civilian cover; she has little respect for him.
Notable Quotes
- “I’ll teach you! The things you don’t know or can’t do. I’ll teach you everything.”
- “Really… why didn’t I kill you the first time we met? Denji. Truth is… I’ve never gone to school either.”
- #21Santa Claus
Keys: International Assassins doll, German Santa, Santa Claus, Soviet Santa, Doll Devil, Tolka's master, doll hive mind, darkness contractor
Santa Claus is a global hive-mind of perfect doll assassins, indistinguishable from ordinary humans, controlled by a single individual through a contract with the Doll Devil. The central consciousness is presumed to be a mysterious woman (sometimes referred to as “Master”) whose main body resides in the Soviet Union. One of her perfect dolls poses as an elderly German Devil Hunter known as the “Santa Claus of Germany.” She serves as the main antagonist of the International Assassins arc.
Appearance
The presumed main body is a woman with dark blue hair, green eyes, and a mole under one eye, typically wearing a dark skirt and orange sweater.
After consuming a piece of the Darkness Devil’s flesh she transforms into a monstrous form: multiple doll arms and appendages, legs composed of doll heads, and (at night) a larger, more devilish body with horns, sharp teeth, and up to 40 eyes. She has approximately 10 arms during the day and even more at night.
One of her perfect dolls appears as a short, mostly bald elderly man with a thin mustache and beard (the “Santa Claus of Germany”).
Personality
Santa Claus is highly tactical, strategic, and patient. She operates from the shadows, using perfect dolls to negotiate and fight while keeping her true body hidden. She shows no regard for the lives or feelings of those around her—including subordinates and “family” she has groomed—willingly transforming allies into dolls or sacrificing them for contracts the moment it becomes useful.
She initially presents a lecherous façade when demanding children as payment, though this appears to be a calculated method of instilling the strong emotions (pity, worship, adoration, guilt) required to create perfect dolls. After absorbing the Darkness Devil’s power she becomes arrogant and obsessed with the idea that she will evolve until she understands everything. When Cosmo forces the totality of universal knowledge into her mind, the overload reduces her consciousness to an endless loop of “Halloween.”
Backstory & Key History
At some point Santa Claus contracted with the Doll Devil, gaining the ability to create ordinary dolls and perfect dolls that spread worldwide. One perfect doll operated openly in Germany as a Devil Hunter; the main consciousness remained in the Soviet Union, training the boy Tolka to become another perfect doll. She had only half a year left to live for unknown reasons.
Commissioned (ostensibly by the German government) to capture or kill the Chainsaw Devil, she travels to Japan with Tolka while her German doll operates separately. She arranges three stabs with a Curse Devil nail on Denji and has Tolka deliver the fourth. Simultaneously her dolls convert civilians into an army. After Tolka “kills” Denji she congratulates him, then immediately turns him into a perfect doll. She sacrifices the German doll and three children to the Hell Devil, transporting the department-store battle into Hell so she can offer Chainsaw Man’s heart to the Darkness Devil in exchange for the power to kill Makima.
The Darkness Devil accepts, granting her a piece of its flesh. Empowered, she battles Denji and Quanxi, distributing her pain across worldwide dolls and temporarily restoring human personalities to some of them as a psychological weapon. Nightfall further strengthens her. Denji ultimately defeats her physical form by setting himself on fire (exploiting her weakness to light) and destroying the body. When she claims she will simply continue through her remaining dolls, Cosmo pulls her consciousness into her own mind and forces her to comprehend the entire universe, leaving her mind broken and fixated solely on “Halloween.” All of her dolls across the world go haywire and collapse.
Powers & Abilities
- Doll Devil Contract (price unknown):
- Doll Creation: Touch converts a person into an obedient doll; the effect spreads contagiously through further touches, rapidly creating armies. Dolls can form blade arms and blade feet. Fiends and Hybrids are immune. Control requires the controller to remain relatively nearby.
- Perfect Doll Creation: By instilling specifically human emotions (pity, worship, adoration, guilt) a target becomes a perfect doll that can form contracts in Santa’s place and share the hive mind.
- Mind Transfer / Hive Mind: Consciousness can transfer between any of her dolls worldwide, granting effective immortality as long as at least one doll remains.
- Curse Devil Contract (via perfect dolls): Used to stab Denji with the required nails.
- Hell Devil Contract: Sacrifices allow transportation of large groups (and the surrounding area) to Hell.
- Darkness Devil Power (temporary): After consuming a piece of its flesh she gains vastly enhanced regeneration, the ability to distribute pain across all dolls, increased power at night, and a monstrous multi-limbed form.
- High-level strategic planning and long-term manipulation.
Relationships
- Tolka: Apprentice and surrogate son whom she trains and ultimately converts into a perfect doll the moment he is no longer needed as a free-willed human.
- German Perfect Doll (“Santa Claus of Germany”): Public-facing body used for negotiations and large-scale doll conversion in Japan; sacrificed to the Hell Devil.
- Darkness Devil: Temporary benefactor who grants power in exchange for Chainsaw Man’s heart (with the ultimate goal of killing Makima).
- Denji / Chainsaw Man: Primary target of the assassination contract.
- Makima: True objective of the Darkness Devil bargain; Santa seeks the power to kill her.
- Quanxi & her fiends: Major combat opponents during the Hell battle.
Notable Quotes
- “Tolka. I’ll tell you the secret to making a sophisticated doll. Take the human you’ll turn into a doll and add emotions only humans have. Pity. Worship. Adoration. And the secret ingredient: guilt.”
- “My mind is connected to all of my puppets around the world.”
- Doll Devil Contract (price unknown):
- #22Tolka
Keys: Darkness contractor pawn, Doll Devil trainee, Tolka, Soviet boy, Santa's apprentice, master's sacrifice
Tolka is a private Devil Hunter from the Soviet Union and the apprentice of Santa Claus. He serves as a supporting antagonist in the International Assassins arc of Chainsaw Man.
Appearance
Tolka is a tall, plain-looking young man with light hair and pale eyes. When hunting he wears a hoodie and carries a quiver on his back.
Personality
Tolka has been thoroughly conditioned by his master through repeated hunting trips to view the taking of a life as no more serious than killing an animal. When asked whether he can kill a sixteen-year-old boy the same way he kills a fox, he affirms that he can. Despite this desensitization he remains deeply devoted to his master, wiping her mouth when she eats and declaring that he wants her to spend her remaining half-year of life in peaceful retirement. His loyalty and desire to care for her are genuine, even though she ultimately sees him only as raw material for a perfect doll.
Backstory & Key History
Tolka lives with and trains under Santa Claus (whom he calls “Master”) in a remote area of the Soviet Union. During a hunting trip he kills a fox with an arrow; his master repeatedly asks whether he believes he has taken a life. After they cook and eat the fox she reveals that their next job is to hunt and kill a sixteen-year-old boy—Denji—exactly as they hunted the fox. Tolka swears he is capable of the act and promises that once the job is finished his master can retire and live out her final months in peace.
In Japan, Santa Claus stabs Denji three times with a Curse Devil nail and entrusts the fourth and final stab to Tolka. During the department-store battle Tolka disguises himself among the corpses of dolls, plants the nail on the floor so that Denji steps on it, and watches as the Curse Devil kills him. He then kicks the shocked Beam in the face.
Santa Claus congratulates him and tells him he is now “part of the family.” She immediately touches him, converting him into a perfect doll. He is transported to Hell along with the other Devil Hunters via the Hell Devil contract. Under the Doll Devil’s control he offers the Darkness Devil the heart of Chainsaw Man in exchange for the power to kill Makima. The Darkness Devil decapitates him shortly afterward.
Powers & Abilities
- Archery: Proficient enough to kill a fox cleanly from a distance with a bow and arrow.
- No Devil contracts of his own are shown while he is still human. After conversion he becomes a perfect doll under Santa Claus’s hive mind and can act as a vessel for her contracts (including speaking to the Darkness Devil).
Relationships
- Santa Claus (“Master”): His mentor, surrogate parent, and the sole focus of his loyalty. He wants only to secure a peaceful retirement for her. She grooms him precisely so she can turn him into a perfect doll at the critical moment.
- Denji: The designated target of the assassination; Tolka treats the killing as another hunt.
- Beam: Briefly interacts with him after Denji’s temporary death, kicking him in the face.
- Darkness Devil: Serves as the mouthpiece offering Chainsaw Man’s heart; is immediately killed afterward.
Notable Quotes
- “Master… I can kill. The powers that be made a promise. Once this next job is over, you can stop being a Devil Hunter… You only have a year left to live. I want you to live the rest of your life in peace.”
- Affirmations that he is capable of killing a human being the same way he kills an animal.
- #23Quanxi
Keys: eyeless archer, Bow Hybrid, Kishibe's old flame, China's hybrid, Quanxi, fiend harem leader, Makima's executioner, First Devil Hunter
Quanxi is a legendary Devil Hunter from China known as The First Devil Hunter. She is a Hybrid who has merged with the Bow Devil (also referred to as the Crossbow Devil). In the Public Safety Saga she serves as a secondary antagonist in the International Assassins arc and a minor antagonist in the Control Devil arc. She later returns in the Academy Saga as a supporting character and member of Public Safety’s Special Division 7.
Appearance
In human form Quanxi is a tall, athletically built woman with cream-colored hair tied in a ponytail, wide hips, and a brown left eye. She wears an eyepatch over her right eye (leather in Part 1; frilled lace with a matching black lace choker in Part 2). During the International Assassins arc she wears a black tank top tucked into high-waisted pants with a large belt and carries multiple dao-style swords on her back. In Part 2 she typically wears the standard Public Safety suit and tie.
In Hybrid form her teeth sharpen into arrowheads along her head, wide curved horns form a bow shape on the side of her head, arrowheads protrude from her neck, and her forearms grow glove-like flesh with sharpened bow-shaped attachments. She can fire powerful arrows from crossbow-like structures on her arms.
Personality
Quanxi is calm, stoic, and emotionally reserved. She discusses business without embarrassment even while in bed with her harem of fiend girlfriends and shows little outward reaction to their affection. She lives by the philosophy that “ignorance is bliss,” believing that learning too much about something ruins the enjoyment of it. Despite her detached demeanor she deeply cares for her fiends, requesting human rights and basic education for them as her sole reward and refusing to attack them even after they are turned into dolls, at the cost of her own safety.
In combat she is ruthlessly pragmatic and efficient, prioritizing the elimination of threats and the removal of distractions. She is willing to form temporary alliances when it is tactically advantageous (such as a ceasefire in Hell) and will immediately resume hostilities once the greater threat is dealt with. She still regards Kishibe as an “old friend” and occasionally heeds his advice.
Backstory & Key History
Quanxi is regarded as the first official Devil Hunter. In her youth she partnered with a young Kishibe in Public Safety; he repeatedly asked her to become his woman and she repeatedly rejected him (always hitting him). After roughly nine years she realized she was interested in women; Kishibe admitted he had already known. She later left Japan for China, became an assassin for the Chinese government, and formed a harem of four female fiends (Cosmo, Long, Pingtsi, and Tsugihagi).
In the International Assassins arc the Chinese government hires her to retrieve Denji’s heart. She and her fiends clash with Public Safety forces and Santa Claus’s dolls. After being dragged to Hell she briefly allies with the other hunters against the Darkness Devil and Santa Claus, then resumes her mission. She is ultimately defeated and later brainwashed by Makima, forced to fight as part of Special Division 5 against the full-powered Chainsaw Devil.
In the Academy Saga, after Makima’s defeat, Quanxi has rejoined Public Safety as a member of Special Division 7. She continues to operate with her characteristic efficiency and still shows lingering regard for Kishibe’s wishes regarding Denji.
Powers & Abilities
- Hybrid Transformation: Triggered by pulling an arrow from her right eye socket. Grants arrow-based weaponry and enhanced physical capabilities.
- Arrow Shooting: In Hybrid form she fires high-powered arrows from arm-mounted crossbows; these create clean circular holes in targets and can be used as close-range buckshot.
- Enhanced Strength, Speed & Reflexes: Even in human form she operates far beyond normal human limits—capable of blitzing and beheading multiple targets (including Hybrids) before they can react, cutting through entire crowds of dolls and hunters until her swords shatter from the force, and stopping a moving knife with her fingers.
- Blood Consumption & Regeneration: Heals by drinking blood; can regenerate her entire body from just a head.
- Nigh-Immortality: Extremely difficult to kill permanently. Can be revived by pulling the arrow from her eye. Appears to age extremely slowly (still looks the same decades later).
- Swordsmanship: Wields multiple dao-style blades, swapping them as they break.
- Hand-to-Hand Combat: Ranked by Kishibe among the best in the world; specializes in powerful, precise kicks.
- Archery: Extremely accurate with her Hybrid arrows.
- Bilingual: Speaks Japanese and Chinese.
Relationships
- Her Fiends (Cosmo, Long, Pingtsi, Tsugihagi): Her girlfriends and the people she cares about most. She prioritizes their safety and future rights above personal gain.
- Kishibe: Former Public Safety partner and “old friend.” She rejected his romantic advances but still respects him and occasionally follows his advice.
- Denji / Chainsaw Man: Target of her assassination contract in Part 1; later interactions are more professional under Public Safety.
- Makima: Controlled and used her as a weapon Hybrid against Chainsaw Man.
- Santa Claus & the Dolls: Major combat opponents during the International Assassins arc.
- Public Safety (Part 2): Current affiliation with Special Division 7.
Notable Quotes
- “It wasn’t the reporter that changed. It was my brain that changed. The secret to leading a happy life in this world… is that ignorance is bliss.”
- “The dolls are only imitating humans. Kill them. Don’t hesitate. If you understand it that way, you can kill them, can’t you? Ignorance is bliss, Chainsaw.”
- #24Cosmo
Keys: Cosmo, Cosmos Fiend, Quanxi's girlfriend, brain-exposure fiend, Halloween fiend, universe in the head
Cosmo was the Cosmos Fiend, one of Quanxi’s girlfriends, and embodied the fear of omniscience—the terror of gaining total knowledge of everything in the universe. She appears as a supporting character and member of Quanxi’s harem during the International Assassins arc.
Appearance
Cosmo inhabits a corpse with spiky pink shoulder-length hair styled into pigtails held by red hairbands. She has heart-shaped pupils (orange-red or yellow-red) and her right eye typically hangs out of its socket (apparently retractable to some degree). The upper right side of her head is missing, exposing her brain; a trailing portion of the brain is tied into a bow. She wears a long-sleeved cropped orange sweater, light blue high-waisted shorts, and pink sneakers.
Personality
Outwardly Cosmo displays a constant smiling, happy-go-lucky demeanor and speaks only the word “Halloween.” Like the rest of Quanxi’s fiends she is devoted to Quanxi, follows her everywhere, and appears to be in love with her.
When she pulls a target into her own mind, her true inner personality emerges. Inside that mental space she speaks normally, formally, and with complete emotional detachment. She is logical, straightforward, and largely devoid of strong feelings—accepting death and the deaths of her fellow girlfriends as simply “the course of nature.” She shows no anger or personal grudge even while destroying Santa Claus’s mind. Her surface personality (constant “Halloween” and limited emotional range) appears to be a side-effect of her own power affecting her as a Fiend, yet she retains enough functionality to understand speech, follow orders, and act purposefully.
Backstory & Key History
Cosmo is one of the four fiend girlfriends who accompany Quanxi (alongside Long, Pingtsi, and Tsugihagi). She travels with them to Japan as part of the Chinese government’s contract to retrieve Denji’s heart. Throughout the International Assassins arc she remains mostly silent and supportive, repeating only “Halloween.”
During the climactic battle in Hell, after Santa Claus kills most of Quanxi’s other girlfriends and threatens to turn Quanxi into a doll, Quanxi orders Cosmo to give Santa Claus “an all-out Halloween.” Cosmo complies, pulling Santa Claus’s consciousness into her mental library and forcing her to comprehend the entire universe. Santa Claus (and all of her dolls worldwide) are reduced to a semi-catatonic state, able only to think and say “Halloween.”
Despite this decisive contribution, Cosmo is beheaded by Makima along with Quanxi and the remaining fiend Tsugihagi. In the Academy Saga it is revealed that Public Safety took custody of the fiends’ corpses; Quanxi was later recruited into Special Division 7 partly with the promise of eventually reclaiming them.
Powers & Abilities
- Standard Fiend Abilities: Cannot form contracts; possesses basic Devil regeneration via blood and other standard traits. Power scales with humanity’s fear of infinite knowledge / omniscience.
- Total Understanding / “All-Out Halloween”: Telepathically draws a target’s mind into her own mental dimension (a vast library-like space). She then forces the victim to understand everything in the universe. The result is a semi-catatonic state in which the victim can only think and say “Halloween” until death. The ability appears to require the target to somehow engage with or copy the word “Halloween,” and Cosmo can modulate its intensity (from mild effects that still allow limited speech to the full, irreversible overload used on Santa Claus).
- Omniscience: She inherently possesses total knowledge of the universe. As a Fiend, however, this knowledge is largely inaccessible to her in daily life; she is unable to utilize it meaningfully and is herself limited to saying “Halloween.” Only inside her mental space does her true, fully functional personality appear.
Relationships
- Quanxi: Her primary romantic partner and leader. Cosmo is completely loyal and follows her without question.
- Long, Pingtsi, Tsugihagi: Fellow members of Quanxi’s harem / girlfriends. Cosmo shows no strong emotional reaction to their deaths, regarding them as natural.
- Santa Claus: The target of her most powerful demonstrated use of “Total Understanding,” which permanently breaks Santa’s mind and collapses the entire doll network.
- Makima: Indirectly responsible for Cosmo’s death (beheaded along with Quanxi).
Notable Quotes
- “Halloween!” (her only spoken word in the physical world)
- Inside her mind, to Santa Claus: a calm, formal explanation that she is the Cosmos Fiend, that the attack is simply the natural order, and that Santa will soon understand everything and thereafter be able to think of nothing but Halloween until death.
- #25Pingtsi
Keys: Chinese fiend, Quanxi's girlfriend, small talk fiend, Pingtsi, mind-reading fiend
Pingtsi was one of Quanxi’s fiends and a member of her harem. She appears as a supporting character during the International Assassins arc of Chainsaw Man.
Appearance
Pingtsi inhabits a corpse with dark hair that has a blue hue. She has a distinctive Futakuchi-onna-style ponytail (with its own eyes) along with eye-length bangs and slightly longer side bangs. All of her hairbands are red. She wears a long-sleeved, knee-length black dress with white cuffs and a collar, plain black shoes, and black leggings. The eyes on her ponytail appear purple; the eyes on her face may be red or purple. She is noticeably shorter than the rest of Quanxi’s fiends.
Personality
Pingtsi is cheerful, talkative, and eager to share miscellaneous (often useless) facts in an attempt to impress or entertain Quanxi. She is loyal to Quanxi and the other members of the group. She can be snarky in combat situations and is capable of both mockery and genuine fear (especially when confronted with the reality of Hell and the Primal Fears).
Backstory & Key History
Pingtsi travels to Japan with Quanxi, Cosmo, Long, and Tsugihagi as part of the Chinese government’s contract to retrieve Denji’s heart. Upon arrival she requests that the group visit a sushi restaurant, where she cheerfully lectures about fish (to Quanxi’s mild exasperation).
She assists Quanxi in the slaughter of dolls and Devil Hunters on the way to and around the department store, making light comments such as “He he he. A corpse is talking.” Outside the mall she and the others confront Kishibe. Claiming not to understand Japanese at first, she uses her ability to analyze his contracts, mocks him for having nothing left to sacrifice, and orders the group to “gobble him up.” Kishibe apprehends her and Long; Power then holds her at knifepoint.
When the group is transported to Hell, Pingtsi panics, identifies the watching Primal Fears, warns that drawing their hostility means death, and asks Quanxi for permission to kill herself. The Darkness Devil removes her hands (along with everyone else’s) and kills her. Her corpse is later turned into one of Santa Claus’s dolls and used (alongside Long) to intimidate Quanxi and threaten Tsugihagi. After being forced to stab Quanxi, she receives a final hug from her before the end of the battle.
In the Academy Saga it is revealed that Public Safety took custody of the fiends’ corpses; Quanxi was later recruited into Special Division 7 partly with the promise of eventually reclaiming them.
Powers & Abilities
- Standard Fiend Abilities: Cannot form contracts; possesses basic Devil regeneration and other standard traits (weaker than a full Devil).
- Magnifying Glass / Contract Perception: Her ponytail can transform into a magnifying glass or monocle that allows her to detect and analyze information. She can specifically identify the Devil contracts a human possesses and appear to sense remaining sacrificial capacity (demonstrated against Kishibe). She also used it in Hell to gather detailed information about the watching Primal Fears despite her own fear.
- Bilingual: Speaks Mandarin and can function in Japanese (initially claiming not to understand it, then using her ability to gather necessary information).
Relationships
- Quanxi: Her primary romantic partner and leader. Pingtsi is devoted to her and frequently tries to entertain or impress her with facts.
- Cosmo, Long, Tsugihagi: Fellow members of Quanxi’s harem / girlfriends. She fights and travels alongside them.
- Kishibe: Briefly confronts and analyzes him; is overpowered and held hostage.
- Power: Held at knifepoint by her during the confrontation with Kishibe.
- Santa Claus: Her corpse is later used as a doll to emotionally attack Quanxi.
Notable Quotes
- “He he he. A corpse is talking.”
- Cheerful lectures about sushi and fish.
- #26Long
Keys: Long, loyal bodyguard fiend, Quanxi's girlfriend, fish fiend, Chinese spear fiend
Long was one of Quanxi’s fiends and a member of her harem. She appears as a supporting character during the International Assassins arc of Chainsaw Man.
Appearance
Long inhabits a corpse with shaggy, dark purple-red hair of roughly shoulder length and a pair of red horns. Her eyes have red irises and yellow pupils. She wears a white sweater, red shorts, muted red sneakers, and cuffs on her hands (often seen with her wrists chained).
Personality
Long is battle-hungry and primarily focused on the smell and taste of blood. She appears submissive, frequently shown with her wrists restrained, and follows Quanxi’s lead without question.
Backstory & Key History
Long travels to Japan with Quanxi, Cosmo, Pingtsi, and Tsugihagi as part of the Chinese government’s contract to retrieve Denji’s heart. She assists the group in finishing off remaining dolls outside the department store. Kishibe apprehends her along with Pingtsi. Later she is held at knifepoint by Denji. When Aldo intervenes, Denji releases her; she immediately puts him in a chokehold, blocks gunfire with her arm, and breathes fire at Aldo. Beam later hurls her away, allowing Denji to escape.
She is transported to Hell with the others, panics along with the rest of the fiends, and is killed by the Darkness Devil. Her corpse is subsequently turned into one of Santa Claus’s dolls and used (alongside Pingtsi) to intimidate Quanxi and threaten Tsugihagi.
- Fire Breathing: Can exhale large quantities of fire from her mouth.
- Hand-to-Hand Combat: Skilled enough to put Denji in a chokehold and block multiple gunshots with her arm during combat.
Relationships
- Quanxi: Her primary romantic partner and leader. Long is loyal and follows her commands.
- Cosmo, Pingtsi, Tsugihagi: Fellow members of Quanxi’s harem / girlfriends. She fights alongside them.
- Denji: Briefly holds him in a chokehold after being released.
- Kishibe & Power: Apprehended by Kishibe; threatened by Power via hostage situation involving Pingtsi.
- Aldo: Engages him in combat, blocking bullets and breathing fire.
Notable Quotes
- “Blood.” (one of the few words she is shown to speak)
- #27Tsugihagi
Keys: Tsugihagi, patchwork girl, Quanxi's girlfriend, mute doll fiend, stitched fiend
Tsugihagi (“Patched”) is an unnamed fiend and was one of Quanxi’s harem members. She appears as a supporting character during the International Assassins arc of Chainsaw Man. She is the only member of Quanxi’s group never given a proper personal name in the story.
Appearance
Tsugihagi inhabits a corpse with short green hair, grey sclera, and yellow eyes. Her pale skin has a greyish hue and is covered in visible stitches across her face, thighs, and upper arm. She wears a long black skirt, a loose yellow cardigan with four buttons, and black clogs.
Personality
Nothing is known about Tsugihagi’s personality, as she never speaks a single word in any of her appearances. She is, however, extremely loyal to Quanxi and the other women in the group, remaining by their side throughout the arc and taking decisive action to revive Quanxi at a critical moment.
Backstory & Key History
Tsugihagi is present with Quanxi, Cosmo, Long, and Pingtsi from the beginning of their involvement in the International Assassins arc. She is seen lying in bed with the others when the Chinese military approaches Quanxi with the contract to retrieve Denji’s heart; when Quanxi asks what her girlfriends want as a reward, Tsugihagi simply lifts her head to look at her before lying back down in silence.
She accompanies the group to Japan and participates in the events surrounding the department-store battle. After the group is transported to Hell, Quanxi is decapitated and Long and Pingtsi are killed. When they return, Tsugihagi recovers Quanxi’s head, realizes the others are dead, and stands atop the building that had been sent to Hell. She pulls the arrow from beneath Quanxi’s eyepatch and drops the head into the ongoing fight between Denji and Santa Claus below, allowing Quanxi to transform into her Hybrid form and turn the tide of the battle.
After Santa Claus is defeated, Makima appears. Quanxi immediately surrenders and begs Makima not to kill her remaining women, even offering her own limbs. Makima ignores the plea and beheads Quanxi, Cosmo, and Tsugihagi.
- No unique or specialized abilities are ever demonstrated. She is the only member of Quanxi’s harem never shown using any distinct power.
Relationships
- Quanxi: Her primary romantic partner and leader. Tsugihagi’s loyalty is absolute; she is the one who retrieves Quanxi’s head and enables her Hybrid transformation at a decisive moment.
- Cosmo, Long, Pingtsi: Fellow members of Quanxi’s harem / girlfriends. She remains with them until their deaths.
- Makima: Indirectly responsible for her death (beheaded along with Quanxi and Cosmo).
- #28Aldo
Keys: Skin Devil contractor, American thug, immortal brothers, Gun Devil orphan, Joey's brother, Aldo
Aldo is a private Devil Hunter and assassin from the United States. He is the youngest of three American brothers hired by the U.S. government to kill Denji and retrieve his heart during the International Assassins arc of Chainsaw Man.
Appearance
Aldo is a man of average height with short black hair and light-colored eyes. He has two vertical scars crossing his right eye. Like most Devil Hunters he typically wears a standard black suit.
Personality
Unlike his older brothers, Aldo is sensitive, insecure, and easily disturbed by death. He frequently vomits at the sight of corpses and shows genuine empathy, even crying after learning about the life of the man whose identity he assumed. He constantly reassures himself that he is “immortal” and capable of completing the job, drawing motivation from his brothers’ words. Despite his fear and tendency to act only when the situation feels safe, he is determined, intelligent, and capable of careful planning. For much of the arc others mistake him for an ordinary civilian rather than a professional hitman.
Backstory & Key History
Aldo and his two older brothers (the unnamed eldest and Joey) lost their parents and grandmother to the Gun Devil, which motivated them to become Devil Hunters and assassins. In New York they accept a $2 million U.S. government contract to kill Denji and bring his body back.
Upon arriving in Japan they ambush a car carrying Kyoto Public Safety hunters Michiko Tendo, Yutaro Kurose, and Subaru. They kill all three; Aldo personally shoots Subaru and later vomits in disgust. Using their Skin Devil contracts, the brothers disguise themselves— the eldest as Kurose. After the eldest is killed by Power’s reckless driving and Joey is ambushed and killed by Yoshida, Aldo continues alone while disguised as Kurose.
He visits Kurose’s friend Tomono, spends the night talking about the past, and is deeply affected by Tomono’s desire to quit Public Safety. Motivated by memories of his brothers’ mantra that “a pro always gets the job done,” he proceeds to the department store where Denji is located. During the chaos of Quanxi’s attack he shoots at Denji (missing) and then at Long (hitting her twice) before being thrown out of the building by Quanxi, landing on Kobeni’s car. He witnesses the Hell Devil transport the department store to Hell.
In the aftermath he is seen among the crowd of dolls repeating “Halloween.” His facial expressions suggest he may only be pretending to be affected in order to survive.
Powers & Abilities
- Skin Devil Contract: By touching a corpse, Aldo can perfectly change his appearance (and clothing) to match that of the deceased person.
- Enhanced Durability: Survives being thrown from a multi-story department store onto a car with only pain and no serious injury.
- Enhanced Reflexes: Dodges a point-blank fire attack from Long (though he cannot react to Quanxi).
- Proficient Marksmanship: Skilled with firearms; kills Subaru and lands shots on Long while moving.
Relationships
- Elder Brothers (unnamed eldest & Joey): Deeply admires them and draws courage from their belief in their shared “immortality.” Their deaths leave him alone and grieving.
- Yutaro Kurose (disguise): Assumes his identity and becomes emotionally affected by learning about Kurose’s life and relationships.
- Tomono: Briefly bonds with him while disguised as Kurose; Tomono’s words about quitting and family resonate strongly.
- Denji: Primary target of the assassination contract.
- Quanxi & Long: Direct combatants; Long restrains Denji while Aldo shoots her, and Quanxi throws him from the building.
Notable Quotes
- Repeated self-reassurance that he is immortal and can complete the job.
- Echoing his brothers: “A pro always gets the job done.”
- #29Joey
Keys: Joey, Skin Devil contractor, American thug, immortal brothers, Gun Devil orphan, Aldo's brother
Joey was a private Devil Hunter and assassin from the United States. He is the middle brother of the three American assassins hired by the U.S. government to kill Denji and retrieve his heart during the International Assassins arc of Chainsaw Man.
Appearance
Joey is a tall man of average build with long, disheveled hair and sinister-looking eyes. He wears a suit similar to the standard Public Safety Devil Hunter uniform.
Personality
Joey is the least mature of the three brothers—his older brother openly calls him a dumbass. He is crude, a womanizer who immediately thinks of Japanese women when hearing about a job in Japan, and enjoys smoking. Despite his rough and immature demeanor, he is close to his family. He reacts with genuine shock and anger when his older brother dies and tries to calm both himself and Aldo in the moments before his own death.
Backstory & Key History
Joey, his unnamed older brother, and younger brother Aldo lost family members to the Gun Devil and became Devil Hunters/assassins. In New York they accept a $2 million U.S. government contract to kill Denji.
After arriving in Japan the brothers ambush a car carrying Kyoto Public Safety hunters Michiko Tendo, Yutaro Kurose, and Subaru. They kill all three with firearms; Joey looks at Tendo’s body and remarks that it was a shame to kill such a fine woman. When asked how he feels about the killing, he replies with only mild annoyance and disgust. The brothers then use their Skin Devil contracts to disguise themselves—the eldest as Kurose.
In Tokyo, while the disguised eldest brother approaches Denji and Special Division 4, Joey and Aldo watch from the side as civilians. Power, driving Kobeni’s car, suddenly rams the group and kills the eldest brother, whose disguise slips. Joey and Aldo watch in terror. They retreat to an alleyway, remove their disguises, and Joey vows to kill the fiend responsible. Moments later Hirofumi Yoshida pulls him around a corner, wounds him, and executes him.
Powers & Abilities
- Skin Devil Contract: By touching a corpse, Joey can perfectly change his appearance to match that of the deceased person.
- Proficient Marksmanship: Skilled with firearms; participates in the shooting deaths of the Kyoto hunters (including Kurose).
Relationships
- Elder Brother (unnamed): Looks up to him; shares the family’s delusional belief in their “immortality.”
- Aldo: Younger brother. Tries to calm him after the eldest’s death.
- Michiko Tendo: Comments on her appearance after killing her, showing his womanizing side even in the middle of an assassination.
- Hirofumi Yoshida: The one who ambushes and kills him in the alleyway.
- Denji: Primary target of the $2 million contract.
Notable Quotes
- Asking whether the job involves hunting women because “Japan is all about women.”
- Remarking that it was a shame to kill Tendo because she was attractive.
- #30Miri Sugo
Keys: Miri Sugo, Miri, Church hybrid, Barem's subordinate, crying hybrid, Denji's classmate hybrid, Longsword Hybrid
Miri Sugo, also known as Sword Man, is a Devil-Human Hybrid who merged with the Longsword Devil. He serves as a minor antagonist in the Control Devil arc and later returns as a supporting character in the Academy Saga, affiliated with the Chainsaw Man Church and its “Weapons” group under Barem.
Appearance
In human form Miri is a young man of average height with unkempt black hair reaching the middle of his neck, visible dark circles under his blue eyes, and a generally tired expression. He typically wears a drawstring hoodie underneath his Fourth East High School uniform (or the Public Safety suit while under Makima’s control), dark pants, and white sneakers. Classmates have noted that he looks like a mix between Denji and Haruka Iseumi.
In Hybrid form his head is replaced by a jagged triangular metal visor from which two longswords protrude backward (resembling rabbit ears or horns). His teeth become sharp and jagged, and large longswords emerge from his arms. In the Public Safety Saga the arm blades include cross-guards at the elbows; these are absent in the Academy Saga.
Personality
While under Makima’s control Miri appears eager to impress her and enjoys attention. Once freed, his true personality emerges: he is grateful to Denji for killing Makima and freeing him, and he sincerely wants to befriend him. He highly values his newfound free will and insists he will now use his body and mind for himself.
Despite this, he remains vulnerable to manipulation. He easily accepts the Chainsaw Man Church’s conspiracy theories, argues that the ends justify the means even if the Church is dishonest, and continues following Barem’s plans. He has a stronger moral compass than the other Weapons—hesitating at mass murder and insisting he is a human who should think for himself—yet he still goes along with their schemes. He is socially awkward, uninterested in ordinary classmates (calling them “trash”), and becomes irritated when people other than Denji try to talk to him. He draws the line at what he considers “infantile” behavior.
Backstory & Key History
Miri spent much of his life being manipulated and used as a tool by people who only valued his Hybrid abilities. At some point he was brainwashed and controlled by Makima, becoming part of her Special Division 5 of Weapon Hybrids assembled to fight the fully powered Chainsaw Devil. During the Control Devil arc he battles Pochita alongside the other Hybrids and is defeated.
After Makima’s death he regains his free will. In the Academy Saga he joins the Chainsaw Man Church with Barem, the Whip Hybrid, and the Spear Hybrid, forming part of the Church’s top brass. He transfers to Fourth East High School, seeks out Denji, introduces himself as “Sword Man,” and attempts to befriend him out of gratitude. He participates in the Church’s plans (including the intended mall massacre) while still struggling with doubts about their methods and the emotional consequences of their actions.
Powers & Abilities
- Hybrid Transformation: Removes his right hand to reveal a blade on the inside of his arm, transforming into Sword Man.
- Augmented Strength, Speed & Durability: Capable of matching other high-level Hybrids such as Katana Man and Chainsaw Man in combat.
- Arm Blades: Large longswords protruding from his arms used for powerful slashing attacks.
- Blood Consumption & Regeneration: Heals by drinking blood; can regenerate his entire body.
- Nigh-Immortality: Extremely difficult to kill permanently. Can survive beheading, impalement, and severe injuries; can be revived by removing his right hand.
- Swordsmanship: Skilled fighter with his arm blades.
Relationships
- Denji / Chainsaw Man: Feels deep gratitude for being freed from Makima’s control and wants to be friends. Continues trying to connect with him even while working against him under the Church.
- Makima: Former controller; Miri was fully brainwashed into serving her.
- Barem Bridge & the other Weapons (Whip Hybrid, Spear Hybrid): Current allies in the Chainsaw Man Church. Miri follows their plans despite private doubts.
- Fumiko Mifune: Notes that Miri is still easily manipulated despite his claims of free will.
- Classmates at Fourth East High: Largely dismissive; avoids socializing and calls them trash.
Notable Quotes
- “I’m not about to worship you, but I am grateful to you with every passing day! In the Chainsaw Man Church, I’m truly free! I realized something! My body, my brain… I ought to use them for myself!”
- Insistence that he is a human who should think for himself, not merely a weapon.
- #31Spear Hybrid
Keys: Spear Weapon, Makima's weapon, neck-spear hybrid, Spear Hybrid, Church spear, Division 5 spear
Spear Hybrid (real name unknown) is a Devil-Human Hybrid who merged with the Spear Devil. He serves as a minor antagonist in the Control Devil arc and later returns as a supporting antagonist in the Academy Saga, working with Barem and the Chainsaw Man Church as one of “The Weapons.”
Appearance
In human form the Spear Hybrid is a tall man with short blonde hair, light stubble on his chin, and rectangular glasses. He usually wears a long double-breasted coat over a sweater and collared shirt with dark pants and shoes, and often has a cold expression. While under Makima’s control he wears the standard Public Safety Devil Hunter suit and tie.
In Hybrid form his head becomes a spearhead with a wide mouth full of huge, sharp teeth. His arms are covered in dark metallic armor matching the skin of his head—unlike most other Hybrids.
Personality
While brainwashed by Makima he appears competitive, suggesting that whoever kills Chainsaw Man first should get to ask Makima on a date. After being freed, his true personality emerges: cold-hearted, sadistic, and largely silent compared to his fellow Weapons. He shows no hesitation about harming civilians and actively proposes targeting women and children during a planned massacre because their higher-pitched screams would be more effective. He is devoted to Barem’s goal of luring out Chainsaw Man through extreme violence and takes clear pleasure in the idea of causing maximum suffering.
Backstory & Key History
At some point he merged with the Spear Devil and became a Hybrid. He was later brainwashed by Makima and incorporated into her Special Division 5 of Weapon Hybrids, assembled specifically to fight the fully powered Chainsaw Devil.
During the Control Devil arc he participates in the battles against Pochita, throwing spears with high accuracy (including one that pierces Chainsaw Man mid-air) and later impaling him from behind in the graveyard confrontation. He is defeated multiple times and, after Makima’s death, is freed from her control.
In the Academy Saga he joins the Chainsaw Man Church alongside Barem, Miri Sugo, and the Whip Hybrid, becoming part of the Church’s top brass known as “The Weapons.” He helps plan a public massacre to force Chainsaw Man to appear, specifically instructing the group to prioritize women and children for louder screams. The plan is interrupted by Quanxi, who dismembers them and takes them into Public Safety custody. They later escape during the global Fire Devil incidents.
Near Denji’s burning apartment, the Spear Hybrid and Miri take Fumiko hostage to provoke Denji into transforming. During the ensuing fight he stabs Denji from behind, only for Denji to bisect him and begin consuming his body for regeneration, leaving him unable to continue fighting.
Powers & Abilities
- Hybrid Transformation: Triggered by pulling a spear from the back of his neck (nape/spinal area).
- Augmented Strength, Speed & Durability: Capable of matching other high-level Hybrids such as Katana Man and Chainsaw Man.
- Spear Generation: Creates sharp spears that can be used in melee or thrown with extreme accuracy (able to hit targets hundreds of meters in the air). Spears are strong enough to pierce the Chainsaw Devil’s body.
- Blood Consumption & Regeneration: Heals by drinking blood; can regenerate his entire body.
- Nigh-Immortality: Extremely difficult to kill permanently. Can survive bisection, being partially consumed, and severe injuries. Can be revived by pulling a spear from his spinal cord.
- Accuracy: Demonstrated high precision with thrown spears over long distances.
Relationships
- Makima: Former controller; fully brainwashed into serving her Special Division 5.
- Barem Bridge: Current leader figure within the Chainsaw Man Church; follows his plans devotedly.
- Miri Sugo (Sword Man) & Whip Hybrid: Fellow “Weapons” and frequent combat partners.
- Denji / Chainsaw Man: Primary target both under Makima and later with the Church; repeatedly attempts to kill or provoke him.
- Quanxi: Defeats and captures him (along with the other Weapons) during the planned massacre.
Notable Quotes
- “Listen up, children. Our orders are to make the humans scream as loudly as possible as we kill them. We’ll target women and children. Higher voices, better screams.”
- Suggestion (while under Makima’s control) that the first to kill Chainsaw Man should get to ask her on a date.
- #32Whip Hybrid
Keys: Makima's weapon, Whip Hybrid, Division 5 whip, Whip Weapon, hand-motion hybrid, Church whip
Whip Hybrid (real name unknown) is a Devil-Human Hybrid who merged with the Whip Devil. She serves as a minor antagonist in the Control Devil arc and later returns as a supporting antagonist in the Academy Saga, working with Barem and the Chainsaw Man Church as one of “The Weapons.”
Appearance
In human form the Whip Hybrid is a short-statured woman with messy, shoulder-length brown hair and bangs covering her forehead. She has dark, almost smudged circles under her eyes and usually wears circular shades. Her typical outfit is a long blazer draped loosely over her shoulders like a cape, over a button-up shirt tucked into dark high-waisted pants. She is the shortest among the known Hybrids. While under Makima’s control she wears the Public Safety suit but still drapes the coat over her shoulders instead of wearing it properly.
In Hybrid form her head develops an elongated chin and sharp, exposed teeth similar to Chainsaw Man’s. Whips grow from her nape to simulate hair, and her hands are replaced by long, whip-like appendages (multiple whips).
Personality
While brainwashed by Makima she appears arrogant and high-handed, bluntly dismissing the Spear Hybrid’s idea of competing for a date with Makima and cackling while attacking. After being freed, her true personality is lax, cocky, and openly sadistic. She is a devoted worshipper of Chainsaw Man and has no moral hesitation about committing mass murder to force him to appear. She tells Miri that they are “mere weapons” who should discard all other thoughts, and she is the least affected by the planned civilian massacre.
She views herself as a superior human specimen chosen by God, proud of her near-immortality and anti-aging (claiming she is almost 82). She can come across as dim-witted (e.g., answering that humans, weapons, and devils have in common that they are “hard to spell”), yet she shows surprising insight into manipulation—warning that dating Makima would end in disaster and seeming to enjoy chaos for its own sake rather than any “greater purpose.” Despite her usual unfazed demeanor, she displays emotional vulnerability and care for her teammates, yelling at Denji to spit out the Spear Hybrid and calling for Miri when she is pinned down.
Backstory & Key History
At some point she merged with the Whip Devil and became a Hybrid. She was later brainwashed by Makima and incorporated into Special Division 5 of Weapon Hybrids to fight the fully powered Chainsaw Devil.
During the Control Devil arc she participates in the battles against Pochita, attacking from behind and later attempting a pincer attack with Reze in the graveyard confrontation. She is defeated multiple times and, after Makima’s death, is freed from her control.
In the Academy Saga she joins the Chainsaw Man Church with Barem, Miri Sugo, and the Spear Hybrid, becoming part of the Church’s top brass known as “The Weapons.” She helps plan a public massacre to lure out Chainsaw Man and is the most enthusiastic about treating themselves purely as weapons. The plan is interrupted by Quanxi, who dismembers them and takes them into custody. They later escape during the global Fire Devil incidents.
Near Denji’s burning apartment she strikes down Fumiko and Public Safety agents, mocks Miri’s attempts to justify their actions, and joins the fight against the transformed Denji. After Denji bisects and begins consuming the Spear Hybrid she panics, attempts a powerful whiplash attack, and is ultimately defeated when Denji cuts off her leg and repeatedly chainsaws her body.
Powers & Abilities
- Hybrid Transformation: Triggered by snapping her fingers to mimic the sound of a whiplash.
- Augmented Strength, Speed & Durability: Capable of matching other high-level Hybrids such as Katana Man and Chainsaw Man.
- Whips: Her arms end in powerful whip appendages strong enough to bisect a human.
- Blood Consumption & Regeneration: Heals by drinking blood; can regenerate her entire body.
- Nigh-Immortality: Extremely difficult to kill permanently. Can survive being shredded, decapitated, and severe injuries. Can be revived by activating her transformation trigger. Claims to be nearly 82 years old due to the Hybrid process stopping aging.
Relationships
- Makima: Former controller; fully brainwashed into serving her Special Division 5.
- Barem Bridge: Current leader figure within the Chainsaw Man Church; follows his plans.
- Miri Sugo (Sword Man) & Spear Hybrid: Fellow “Weapons.” Shows care for them in combat (especially the Spear Hybrid) while still pushing the group’s violent agenda. Tells Miri to discard human thoughts and act only as a weapon.
- Denji / Chainsaw Man: Primary target; fights him under both Makima and the Church. Panics when she sees him consuming her ally.
- Quanxi: Defeats and captures her (along with the other Weapons) during the planned massacre.
Notable Quotes
- “I’m eternally young and tough as nails, I’ll never die… I’m a superior human specimen. I believe I was chosen by God.”
- Telling Miri they are mere weapons and must discard all other thoughts.
- #33Barem Bridge
Keys: Barem, Fire Devil contractor, Denji's tormentor, Barem Bridge, Nayuta's killer, Church second-in-command, molar trigger hybrid, smiling arsonist, Flamethrower Hybrid
Barem Bridge is a Devil-Human Hybrid who merged with the Flamethrower Devil. He serves as a minor antagonist in the Control Devil arc and later becomes a major antagonist in the Academy Saga—acting as the main antagonist of the Chainsaw Man Church arc and a supporting antagonist in the Aging Devil and War Devil arcs. As second-in-command of the Chainsaw Man Church, he seeks to continue Makima’s legacy by destroying Denji’s peaceful life while working with Fami to prevent the Death Devil from destroying humanity.
Appearance
In human form Barem is a tall man with relatively long black hair swept behind his ears, except for one strand that falls from his forehead and connects to his right eyebrow. While under Makima’s control he wears a standard Public Safety Devil Hunter suit and tie. After joining the Chainsaw Man Church he ties his hair into a ponytail and wears a white buttoned shirt, white pants, black suspenders, and keeps his black necktie tucked into the breast pocket.
In Hybrid form his head transforms into three huge fuel tanks, his neck becomes a jumble of metal parts, and his arms reshape into oversized flamethrowers.
Personality
Under Makima’s control he still shows hints of his true nature, commenting on the other Hybrids’ adoration of her and enthusiastically destroying buildings. Once freed, he reveals himself as a psychopathic, cruel, callous, and highly intelligent individual with a twisted sense of humor. He is fanatically devoted to Makima’s vision of a controlled, peaceful world and harbors intense personal hatred toward Denji for killing her. He sees little value in human life, casually suggests murdering people (including Asa) to force Chainsaw Man to appear, burns homes and pets out of spite, and takes sadistic pleasure in psychological torment. He is manipulative, charismatic enough to help lead a massive cult, and willing to commit extreme atrocities while framing them as necessary to “save the world.”
Backstory & Key History
At some point Barem merged with the Flamethrower Devil. He later fell under Makima’s control (and, unlike the others, appears to have been at least partially willing to carry out her plans). As part of Special Division 5 he battles the fully powered Chainsaw Devil, using his flamethrowers to destroy buildings and incinerate zombies before being repeatedly defeated and revived by Makima. After her death he is freed and swears to continue her legacy while seeking revenge on Denji.
In the Academy Saga he becomes second-in-command of the Chainsaw Man Church alongside Miri Sugo, the Whip Hybrid, and the Spear Hybrid. He helps orchestrate plans to force Denji to transform again, including a planned civilian massacre, contracts with the Fire Devil that create pseudo-Chainsaw monsters, and the burning of Denji and Nayuta’s apartment (killing their pets). He strangles Nayuta, blames Denji for disrupting Makima’s peace, manipulates a mob into attacking her, and later reveals he has murdered and dismembered her—serving her head as sushi to traumatize Denji. This triggers Pochita’s return. In later arcs he continues tormenting Denji (including burning Yoshida’s corpse) before being brutally devoured by Pochita.
Powers & Abilities
- Hybrid Transformation: Triggered by pressing down on a molar tooth, transforming his head into fuel tanks and arms into flamethrowers.
- Augmented Strength, Speed & Durability: Capable of matching other high-level Hybrids such as Katana Man and Chainsaw Man.
- Flamethrowers: Generates powerful blasts of fire capable of creating explosions that destroy entire floors of buildings and incinerate hordes of zombies or large structures.
- Blood Consumption & Regeneration: Heals by drinking blood; can regenerate from severe injuries including bisection.
- Nigh-Immortality: Extremely difficult to kill permanently. Can survive being cut in half and other catastrophic damage; can be revived by activating his transformation trigger.
- Intelligence & Manipulation: Highly skilled at psychological warfare, cult leadership, false-flag operations, and long-term schemes.
Relationships
- Makima: Object of fanatical devotion; he continues her vision even after her death and blames Denji for destroying her promised peace.
- Fami (Death Devil): Ally and co-leader of the Chainsaw Man Church; works with her to prevent the full arrival of the Death Devil.
- Miri Sugo, Whip Hybrid, Spear Hybrid: Fellow “Weapons” under his command in the Church.
- Denji / Chainsaw Man: Primary target of personal revenge and the focus of his schemes to force transformation and destroy his normal life.
- Nayuta: Directly murdered and used as a psychological weapon against Denji.
Notable Quotes
- “These flames… are your punishment.”
- Casual suggestions to kill Asa or others to force Chainsaw Man to appear.
- #34Asa Mitaka
Keys: Asa, lonely student, Asa Mitaka, Crambon's owner, Church celebrity, Yoru's body, guilt-ridden orphan, War Devil's host, aquarium date girl, uniform girl, Denji's classmate, Mitaka
Asa Mitaka is the deuteragonist of the Academy Saga of Chainsaw Man. A high school student who became the living host of the War Devil Yoru (making her the War Fiend), she retains her human personality and consciousness when Yoru allows her control—a rare case among Fiends. She attends Fourth East High School alongside Denji and becomes deeply entangled with him, the Chainsaw Man Church, and the larger conflicts involving the Four Horsemen.
Appearance
Asa is a high school girl of average height. She begins somewhat skinny and later develops a more feminine build. She has dark blue eyes (usually pitch-dark, brightening in certain emotional states) and black hair (sometimes with a brown tint) that reaches the middle of her back, typically worn in two low twin tails. In the past her hair was shoulder-length. She wears the standard Fourth East High School female uniform: a long-sleeved button-up shirt under a pinafore-style dress with a pleated skirt, bow at the collar, wide belt, black knee-high socks, and sneakers.
After major battles she loses both arms (right arm against Yoshida, remaining arm against Pochita). Yoru later regenerates them by sacrificing the Tank and Gun Devils, turning the resulting limbs into powerful weapon/gauntlet forms. In later arcs she is seen in more casual or worn clothing (baggy tops, T-shirts, pants) and sometimes with her hair down.
Personality
Asa is quiet, unsociable, and deeply cynical. She dislikes her classmates, frequently wishes they would die, and rejects friendship offers. She holds a negative view of the world, humans, and Devils, tending to assume the worst of everyone. She is extremely fond of cats and would rather kill a human than a cat. She later admits her hostility stems from jealousy and a sense of not belonging. She suffers from low self-esteem, considers herself clumsy, and is socially inept to a degree that even Yoru sometimes shows better social awareness.
She is capable of compassion and altruism (putting herself at risk to save others) but is hindered by selfishness and an artificial moral compass—she often worries more about consequences and appearances than the actions themselves. She is terrified of making mistakes, tends to blame others when things go wrong, then collapses into self-deprecation. She seeks validation, struggles with trust, and lives in a state of cognitive dissonance: afraid of both solitude and companionship. Her chronic tripping is a somatic trauma response tied to childhood guilt over her father’s death.
Over time she grows braver, more confident as a Devil Hunter, and capable of manipulation. After certain world-altering events her personality can shift dramatically toward a brighter, more well-adjusted version of herself.
Backstory & Key History
Asa’s parents were killed by a Devil (her mother sacrificed herself to save Asa from the Typhoon Devil; her father was involved in earlier trauma that Asa subconsciously rewrote as “clumsiness”). She lives a lonely high-school life until the Class President, possessed by the Justice Devil, kills her. The War Devil Yoru revives her, taking over half her brain and body in exchange for help finding and defeating Chainsaw Man, promising to return full control afterward.
Asa becomes a student at Fourth East High, joins the Devil Hunter Club, befriends (and is betrayed by) Yuko, dates Denji with disastrous results, survives the aquarium ordeal, and develops complex feelings for both Denji and Chainsaw Man. After being saved by Chainsaw Man she becomes a public Devil Hunter affiliated with the Chainsaw Man Church under Fami’s influence, rising to fame. Following the Church’s collapse she turns fugitive, helps free the captive Chainsaw Man from Public Safety, and continues on the run with Denji through the Aging Devil and War Devil arcs. She and Yoru share an increasingly fraught co-existence, with control of the body shifting between them and their emotions bleeding into each other.
Powers & Abilities
- War Devil Possession / War Fiend: Shares a body with Yoru. Asa retains consciousness and control when permitted; Yoru can seize control at will. Gains access to War Devil powers.
- Enhanced Physical Abilities: Increased strength, speed, and durability (further boosted as global fear of war rises). Can stop blades with bare hands and regenerate minor injuries (e.g., fingernails).
- Weapon Creation: Can turn anything that “belongs” to her into a weapon by touching it (later by simply naming it) and declaring the weapon’s name. Power scales with the guilt felt over the sacrifice.
- Object weapons (e.g., Super-Strong Uniform Sword from her mother’s keepsake uniform; Aquarium Spear).
- Flesh weapons (humans, Devils, Fiends, or her own body parts that “belong” to her through ownership, relationships, or literal possession).
- Contracts: Capable of forming Devil contracts (unusual for a pure Fiend, contributing to debate about her exact nature).
- Later gains arm-based weapons derived from the sacrificed Tank and Gun Devils.
Relationships
- Yoru (War Devil): Co-inhabitant of her body. Complicated, antagonistic partnership. Asa resents the loss of autonomy; Yoru needs Asa’s human knowledge and will kill her if she becomes a liability. Their emotions increasingly influence each other.
- Denji / Chainsaw Man: Brief romantic interest that ends in disaster, followed by deep admiration and affection for Chainsaw Man after he repeatedly saves her. Complex mix of care, frustration, and attempts to “save” him that often harm him.
- Yuko: First genuine friend; her betrayal and death deeply affect Asa.
- Fami / Death Devil: Influences Asa into joining the Chainsaw Man Church and becoming a public Devil Hunter.
- Hirofumi Yoshida, Katana Man, and others: Temporary allies or manipulative relationships formed during her Devil Hunter and fugitive periods.
- Her parents: Source of deep trauma and the origin of her self-sabotaging “clumsiness.”
Notable Quotes
- “If I’d known, I could have had a better life. Maybe I could have had friends, or even a boyfriend. I wish… I’d tried living just a little more selfishly.”
- “But even cornered and starving like this… I just can’t do it. Not because I don’t have the guts… or because it goes against my principles. The real reason I can’t is… because I have no idea what’s right or wrong. My life is just… one long string of attempts to avoid making mistakes.”
- #35Yoru
Keys: Gun Devil's mother, nuclear revival, War Devil, Asa's other self, Tank Devil's mother, Four Horsemen, weaponizer, Yoru, Pochita's rival, Asa's passenger
Yoru is the War Devil, embodiment of the fear of war and a member of the Four Horsemen. She serves as the main antagonist of the Academy Saga of Chainsaw Man. After being severely weakened by Pochita, she possesses the body of Asa Mitaka as a Fiend (leaving half of Asa’s brain intact), making Asa a rare living Fiend host. Her primary goals are to locate and defeat Chainsaw Man, reclaim the Nuclear Weapons Devil, restore her power through heightened global fear of war, and ultimately erase the Death Devil to unleash an endless World War II.
Appearance
In her near-death state after Pochita consumed most of her body, Yoru possessed a Nightjar bird, appearing as a beige-colored owl- or potoo-like creature with a piercing gaze and the distinctive ringed Horsemen eyes.
As a Human Fiend sharing Asa Mitaka’s body, she takes on Asa’s appearance but with added facial scars across the center of her face and left cheek (matching the wounds from the Class President’s attack). When in control her eyes display multiple rings similar to Makima’s, her hair is usually worn loose rather than in twin tails, and her posture is straighter and more confident. She wears whatever clothes Asa is wearing (most often the school uniform), as they share the same body.
Personality
Yoru is confident, prideful, and initially overconfident, treating opponents as warm-ups while vowing to reclaim what Chainsaw Man took from her. She is cold, logical, and largely uncaring of human feelings or attachments, frequently clashing with Asa’s emotional nature. She holds little sentimental value for humans and will threaten or hurt Asa to force compliance or survival, though many threats appear to be saber-rattling. She is immature, prone to temper tantrums, insecure about her strength and intellect being questioned, and easily embarrassed or angered (especially by being saved by her archenemy).
Despite her Devil nature she shows flawed, “human” traits: she can form attachments (to her “comrades” inside Pochita and to the Gun and Tank Devils, whom she calls her children), feels worry about being forgotten or losing power, and occasionally displays limited sympathy or compromise toward Asa. She is socially inept regarding human relationships and society, takes things at face value, and is cunning in combat situations. Over time she adapts somewhat to human life but remains manipulative and prioritizes her own goals. In moments of extreme danger she can panic. She finds basic pleasures (such as plain bread) sufficient and laughs maniacally at large-scale destruction, reminding others she is still fundamentally a Devil.
Backstory & Key History
As one of the Four Horsemen, Yoru was reduced to a near-death state when Pochita consumed most of her body (along with other concepts related to war). She possessed a Nightjar and later, after Asa is killed by the Justice Devil-possessed Class President, claims half of Asa’s brain and body to survive and navigate human society. She coerces Asa into helping her find and defeat Chainsaw Man (who attends the same school) in exchange for eventually returning full control of the body.
Yoru and Asa share control, with Yoru taking over in combat or when Asa is overwhelmed. They attempt (and fail) to turn Denji into a weapon, lose memories of certain events, become involved with the Chainsaw Man Church under Fami’s influence, and experience major power fluctuations tied to global fear of war. After significant battles (including against the Falling Devil and later Pochita), Yoru grows stronger, sacrifices the Gun and Tank Devils (her “children”) to restore Asa’s lost arms as powerful weapons, and escalates her plans toward erasing the Death Devil and restarting endless war. Their co-existence grows increasingly strained as Yoru’s influence and destructive actions intensify.
Powers & Abilities
- Standard Devil Abilities: Regeneration via blood consumption, contracts with humans, revival in Hell after death, and power scaling with fear of the concept she embodies (war).
- Body Possession / Fiend Form: Occupies half of Asa’s brain, allowing shared control. Yoru can seize the body at will (unless Asa is too terrified). The non-controlling consciousness appears as a hallucination that can communicate.
- Weapon Creation: Can turn anything (or anyone) that “belongs” to her/Asa into a weapon. Power scales with the guilt felt over the sacrifice. Includes object weapons, flesh weapons (humans, Devils, body parts), and later high-level constructs derived from the Gun and Tank Devils.
- Enhanced Physical Abilities: Strength, speed, and durability that increase with global fear of war.
- Strategic Intelligence & Combat Cunning: Capable of elaborate preparations, traps, and keeping a cool head in battle.
- Horseman Traits: Ringed eyes; ability to sense and be affected by (or resist) certain Devil influences differently from ordinary Devils or humans.
Weaknesses
- Severely weakened state after being partially consumed by Pochita and the long period of relative peace reducing fear of war.
- Anemia/low blood when critically injured; requires large amounts of blood to recover strength.
- Shared body limitations: cannot fully take over if Asa is too frightened; emotions can bleed between them.
- Incomplete understanding of human psychology and relationships.
Relationships
- Asa Mitaka: Host and co-inhabitant. Initially purely utilitarian (needs Asa’s human knowledge and guilt for strong weapons). Over time develops a complicated, toxic partnership with limited sympathy and compromise, though still prioritizes her own goals and manipulates Asa. Closest thing Asa has to a constant companion.
- Denji / Chainsaw Man / Pochita: Primary target and archenemy. Seeks to defeat him, reclaim stolen power/concepts, and later uses intimate or manipulative tactics involving Asa’s feelings.
- Fami / Death Devil: Fellow Horseman; interacts with her plans involving the Chainsaw Man Church and the prevention (or later targeting) of Death.
- Gun Devil & Tank Devil: Considers them her children; eventually sacrifices them for power.
- Other Horsemen & Weapon Devils: Shared history from the battle against Pochita; seeks to free “comrades” from his stomach.
- Yuko, Yoshida, and others: Temporary tools, obstacles, or sources of conflict through Asa’s social circle.
Notable Quotes
- “War draws nigh. … When humans want money, they always go to war. And once they do, they will all remember and fear me!”
- “Asa… the things you think are sins… are nothing in a Devil’s eyes… If I empathize… if I’m able to bear that guilt too… then I can create stronger weapons…”
- #36Yuko
Keys: class president's killer, transformed classmate, Justice Devil contractor, Asa's friend, Yuko, Fake Chainsaw Man's victim
Yuko was a high school student and member of the Devil Hunter Club alongside Asa Mitaka and Hirofumi Yoshida. She serves as the main antagonist of the Justice Devil arc in the Academy Saga of Chainsaw Man.
Appearance
Yuko is a high school girl of average height (slightly shorter than Asa) with short light-blonde hair, matching light-colored eyes, and dark-colored glasses. She wears the standard Fourth East High School female uniform: a long-sleeved button-up shirt under a pinafore-style dress with a pleated skirt, bow at the collar, wide belt, white knee-high socks, and sneakers. Outside school she wears a blank shirt with a dark jacket, light jeans ending just below the knees, and sandals.
In her transformed form (via Devil contract) she becomes a thin, gaunt being with an uncovered brain and tentacles instead of legs. After being resurrected by Fami she grows into a gigantic monster version of this form, large enough to span multiple floors of the school, with her transformed head surrounded by tentacles. After surviving her battle with Chainsaw Man she claims to have become a full Devil: retaining her short blonde hair and roughly humanoid figure, but with thin tendrils covering her face (obscuring the eyes while leaving mouth and nose visible), tendril arms, and tendrils wrapping her legs like a dress. She wears a hoodie to hide this form.
Personality
On the surface Yuko is kind, warmhearted, sociable, and altruistic. She quickly befriends the isolated Asa, notices her distress over the Bucky incident, and immediately offers her own shoes so Asa does not have to walk home barefoot. She dreams of becoming a Devil Hunter both to avenge her parents’ deaths and for the wealth it would bring. She empathizes with Asa’s loneliness and parental loss, claiming she herself has no friends because she cannot understand people. Her personal philosophy is that actions are justified as long as “her heart was in the right place,” even if they turn out to be mistakes.
Beneath this lies a deranged, cold-blooded personality with a deeply twisted sense of justice. She shows no remorse for killing those she deems “evil” while continuing to smile and act warmly. She believes murdering bullies will make her a national symbol like Chainsaw Man and deter future bullying. Her contract with what she believed to be the Justice Devil (actually the Fire Devil) appears to have radicalized or altered her sense of right and wrong. Later she expresses genuine remorse, admitting her true motive was simply to become popular like Chainsaw Man and that she initially befriended Asa only because she had no other friends—yet she still developed a real attachment to her.
Backstory & Key History
Yuko’s parents were killed by Devils. She joins the Devil Hunter Club tryouts at Fourth East High and is paired with Asa and Yoshida. She immediately bonds with Asa, gives her shoes, and the two begin hunting Devils together, bonding over their shared orphan status. They are attacked by the reincarnated Bat Devil and saved by Chainsaw Man.
Later Yuko reveals to Asa that she has a contract with the “Justice Devil,” can read minds, knows about Yoru, and has already murdered her neighbor. She decides to “handle” Asa’s bullying problem by massacring the bullies at school. Transformed, she rampages through the school, killing students she deems bullies while reading Yoru’s movements. Asa (via Yoru) eventually cuts her into pieces with the Super-Strong Uniform Sword. Fami revives and enlarges her into a giant monster form that destroys much of the school. Chainsaw Man defeats her, slicing her apart.
She survives, appearing at Asa’s apartment in a half-Devil form, apologizes, returns the shoes in a moment of genuine friendship and laughter, and leaves. Shortly afterward she is found and beheaded by the Fake Chainsaw Man.
Powers & Abilities
- Fire Devil Contract (believed by her to be the Justice Devil): Price was her humanity, eventually turning her into a Devil. Granted:
- Mind Reading: Can read the thoughts of those nearby, used both for social understanding and combat prediction.
- Transformation: Can turn into a thin, gaunt tentacle-legged form with exposed brain; later becomes a gigantic version of this form.
- Sharp Claws / Tentacles: Capable of wounding and impaling opponents.
- Enhanced Strength & Speed: Far above average human levels while transformed.
- Weapon Proficiency: Uses a hatchet as her preferred Devil-hunting weapon (similar to Denji’s early style).
Relationships
- Asa Mitaka: Her first (and only genuine) friend. She empathizes with Asa’s isolation, tries to “help” her through extreme violence, and still seeks connection even after her true nature is revealed. Their final interaction is a moment of mutual laughter and returned shoes.
- Hirofumi Yoshida: Fellow Devil Hunter Club member; limited interaction.
- Yoru: Antagonistic; Yuko knows about her via mind-reading and fights her directly.
- Denji / Chainsaw Man: Idolizes the public image of Chainsaw Man; is ultimately defeated by the real one and later killed by the Fake Chainsaw Man.
- Fami: Briefly revives and empowers her during the school rampage.
Notable Quotes
- “Even if my actions turn out to be a mistake, if my heart was in the right place, that’s all that matters to me!”
- “I’m gonna get rid of your bullying problem. Don’t come to school tomorrow.”
- Fire Devil Contract (believed by her to be the Justice Devil): Price was her humanity, eventually turning her into a Devil. Granted:
- #37Nayuta
Keys: Makima's reincarnation, Denji's little sister, ring-eyed girl, Nayuta, Four Horsemen child, China-born horseman, Control Devil, dog commander, Denji's sister
Nayuta is the reincarnation of the Control Devil following Makima’s death. To prevent her from becoming another Makima, Kishibe brought her from China to Japan and entrusted her to Denji, who raises her as his younger sister. She is a major recurring character throughout the Academy Saga.
Appearance
Nayuta appears as a young girl with dark brown hair (in colored pages), shoulder-length with a single large bang hanging in front of her face, and a mole under her left eye. Like Makima and Yoru, her eyes are yellow with multiple red rings. In the Academy Saga she is taller and more mature-looking; her hair has grown longer and is worn in a braid flung over one shoulder (reminiscent of Makima), while the long bang still covers her left eye. In the rewritten reality where Pochita never existed, she wears a Public Safety Devil Hunter uniform and coat.
Personality
Denji describes her as a “huge-problem child with an extreme personality.” She is demanding, holds up peace signs, insists on ice cream every day, and is highly intelligent (smart enough that Denji saves for her college tuition). Protective of Denji to the point of trying to drive away other girls (especially Asa/Yoru), she has absorbed many of his mannerisms, informal speech patterns, and even his laugh. She is impish, mischievous, and amoral by human standards—her sense of right and wrong is largely based on personal preference and what benefits her and Denji’s peaceful life.
She feels little genuine camaraderie with school friends and is largely indifferent to the deaths of strangers, viewing killing as a natural instinct. At the same time she is visibly horrified by extreme violence when it involves people she cares about, and she prioritizes Denji’s safety over her own. Unlike Makima she forms genuine emotional bonds (especially with Denji and dogs) without relying solely on fear or control. She takes school seriously and can be childish and argumentative. In the rewritten timeline she retains a bratty, video-game-loving personality while holding a high Public Safety position.
Backstory & Key History
After Makima’s death the Control Devil reincarnated in China as Nayuta. Kishibe located her and brought her to Japan, giving her to Denji with the explicit goal of raising her as family so she would never become another Makima. When first introduced she was a small child who bit Denji’s finger (echoing Makima) and hugged one of Makima’s dogs.
Living with Denji, she gradually recovered memories of her previous incarnation and initially considered fulfilling Makima’s goal of breaking Denji’s contract with Pochita to give him a “normal life.” Over time, however, she grew to genuinely care for Denji as a brother/guardian and abandoned that plan, choosing instead to protect their shared ordinary life. She lives with him, attends school, and acts as both little sister and occasional protector.
Throughout the Academy Saga she uses her powers to safeguard Denji (turning Yoru into a “dog,” altering memories, fighting mobs and Church members, etc.). She is protective, possessive, and increasingly willing to kill threats. After Pochita erases himself and rewrites reality, Nayuta is reborn in a world without Chainsaw Man and becomes the head of a Public Safety division (appearing as a young, spoiled official more interested in video games than work).
Powers & Abilities
- Control / Domination: As the Control Devil she can fire ethereal chains that pierce a target’s brain and place them under her will. She can issue complex commands, alter behavior, and treat controlled beings as extensions of herself. Unlike Makima she is limited to three chains at a time and cannot control certain individuals (e.g., those previously controlled by or still loyal to Makima, such as Barem).
- Memory Alteration: Can erase memories and implant false ones in humans, Devils, and Fiends.
- Perception Alteration: Can change sensory perception (e.g., making something taste like feces).
- Bang!: In the rewritten timeline she retains the ability to fire the “Bang!” attack.
- Standard Devil Abilities: Enhanced physical capabilities, blood regeneration, contracts, etc.
- Scent perception similar to Makima’s (detecting “bad” scents from threats like Yoru or the Falling Devil).
Her overall power is significant but still developing and more limited than Makima’s at her peak.
Relationships
- Denji: Closest bond. Raised by him as a little sister; she calls him her property yet prioritizes his safety and happiness above almost everything. Their relationship is the emotional core of her character and the reason she rejects Makima’s path.
- Kishibe: The one who found her and deliberately placed her with Denji to break the cycle.
- Makima: Previous incarnation. Nayuta inherits her powers and some residual knowledge/instincts but consciously chooses a different path.
- Asa Mitaka / Yoru: Views them as threats to Denji; uses her powers against them (turning Yoru into a dog, altering memories).
- Dogs: Naturally affectionate toward them (including Makima’s former pack) without needing to control them.
- Public Safety / School Friends: Largely indifferent; school is important mainly as part of her “normal life,” and she feels little real attachment to classmates.
Notable Quotes
- References to Denji as her property while still showing clear affection.
- Demands for ice cream and peace signs.
- #38Death Devil
Keys: Death, false Fami, Death Devil, prophesied horseman, Age of Devils, ultimate terror, Four Horsemen eldest, Great King of Terror
Death Devil (also known as Li'l D / Shī-chan after revealing her identity) is the overarching antagonist of the Academy Saga of Chainsaw Man. She is the strongest Devil in existence, embodying the concept of mortality and death itself, and the eldest of the Four Horsemen. She first appears under the alias of the Famine Devil “Fami,” posing as a student at Fourth East High School and secretly leading the Chainsaw Man Church. Prophesied as the Ultimate Terror / Great King of Terror to descend in July 1999 and usher in the Age of Devils by ending humanity, she instead works to avert (or subvert) that prophecy—though her methods create catastrophic consequences of their own.
Appearance
The Death Devil appears as a young woman wearing a high school uniform and a black Devil Hunter Club cap. She has grayish-Mountbatten-pink neck-length hair, several moles on her face, and the piercing multiple-ringed eyes shared by the Horsemen. Her ears feature four green earrings (two bead-like on one side, two long and triangular on the other). On colored covers her eyes are pink.
When her true identity is fully exposed she is shown with a large vertical incision running down the center of her torso and abdomen—the result of a failed attempt to end her own life by removing all vital organs—leaving her a hollow yet still-functioning corpse.
Personality
Death is calm, cold, composed, and highly intelligent, with little outward emotion. She is an excellent reader of people and possesses knowledge far beyond what she initially reveals. She is a master schemer who manipulates events from the shadows, tells different stories to different people, and is willing to sacrifice anyone—including civilians, allies, and even her own sisters—for her goals. She shows little to no remorse for the deaths she causes.
Despite her role as the prophesied apocalypse, she genuinely loves human culture (especially food) and has attempted to kill herself to prevent humanity’s extinction, believing an Age of Devils would end the things she enjoys. She is a massive glutton, ordering and consuming inhuman quantities of food (often messily with her hands). She can be polite or even affectionate toward certain individuals (especially when addressed as a sister or with endearing nicknames), yet remains fundamentally self-serving and defeatist about her own existence. She prefers lethal methods and is disappointed when subordinates fail to kill cleanly. She demands to be called “Death(y)-chan” once her identity is known.
Backstory & Key History
As the eldest Horseman, Death fought Pochita alongside her sisters and the Weapon Devils in Hell. After Pochita escaped to Earth in a weakened form, the sisters eventually reached the human world. Death adopted the alias “Fami” (Famine Devil) to conceal her identity while posing as a Fourth East High student and secretly directing the Chainsaw Man Church.
Her stated goal is to stop the Nostradamus Prophecy of her own arrival in July 1999 by strengthening Chainsaw Man and the War Devil so they can defeat her (or by other means of self-erasure). In pursuit of this she:
- Traps Asa, Denji, and others in the aquarium to force weapon creation and starvation.
- Unleashes the Falling Devil, causing worldwide devastation.
- Orchestrates the Fire Devil contracts that turn hundreds of thousands into pseudo-Chainsaw monsters.
- Sacrifices and manipulates her sisters (including brainwashing the real Fami and the Fake Chainsaw Man after devouring them).
- Attempts (and fails) to end her own life by removing her organs.
Her schemes repeatedly backfire or are subverted, ultimately leading to a future she herself describes as worse than the original prophecy. She is eventually confronted, nearly turned into a weapon by Yoru, and finally consumed by Pochita, erasing both herself and the concept of mortality from existence.
Powers & Abilities
- Strongest Devil / Primal Fear: As the embodiment of death/mortality, she is the ultimate terror and strongest known Devil. Her power is tied to the fundamental fear of death.
- Immortality / Undying Nature: Cannot die even with all vital organs removed; continues existing as a hollow body.
- Standard Devil Abilities: Contracts, regeneration via blood/lifespan consumption, revival in Hell, etc., on an extreme scale.
- Control & Brainwashing: Can devour and enslave other powerful beings (including fellow Horsemen and the Fake Chainsaw Man), turning them into obedient pawns.
- Summoning / Command of Other Devils: Directs the Falling Devil, Guillotine Devil, and others; associated with large-scale disasters.
- Scheming & Information: Vast knowledge and long-term manipulation of human institutions (Chainsaw Man Church, Public Safety interactions).
- Gluttony-Based Consumption: Can devour living beings (including other Devils) whole to control or absorb them.
Relationships
- Makima (Control Devil): Younger sister. Makima sought to use Chainsaw Man to defeat Death for a controlled peaceful world.
- Yoru (War Devil): Younger sister. Death pretends affection and offers help while trying to starve/control her as a weapon against the prophecy. Yoru distrusts her and later seeks to erase Death for her own endless-war goals.
- Fami (true Famine Devil): Younger sister whose name Death stole as an alias. Death apologizes then devours and brainwashes her.
- Nayuta: Another Control Devil incarnation; Death has a closer bond with her but still sacrifices her for plans.
- Asa Mitaka & Denji: Manipulated extensively; Death finds their reactions entertaining and uses them as tools against the prophecy.
- Pochita / Chainsaw Man: Ultimate target of her self-erasure plans; ultimately the one who consumes and erases her.
- Public Safety (Yoshida, Fumiko, etc.): Provides limited information when pressured; has killed multiple agents.
Notable Quotes
- “Any human should be capable of abandoning their morality when they’re starving. I’ll create the right stage for you.”
- “I live to savor. To enjoy food, people, and experiences…”
- #39Haruka Iseumi
Keys: Fourth East president, Iseumi, Haruka Iseumi, Devil Hunter Club president, Haruka, Chainsaw Man fanboy, Church face
Haruka Iseumi is a supporting character in the Academy Saga of Chainsaw Man. He is a student at Fourth East High School, serving as president of both the Devil Hunter Club and the student council. An obsessive fan of Chainsaw Man, he once claimed to be the real thing (via a surgical implant) and later briefly served as the public “face” of the Chainsaw Man Church before the role backfired and he became widely villainized.
Appearance
Haruka is a slim young man with black hair combed to the side of his face. He typically wears a bandana, an all-black uniform, and a military-style cap bearing a symbol. He has a pull-cord protruding from his chest that is identical in appearance to Pochita’s cord in Denji’s body; this is later revealed to be a surgical implant installed purely out of fandom.
Personality
On the surface Haruka appears benevolent, prideful, and leadership-oriented. He introduces himself in an extravagant manner, takes his dual presidential roles very seriously, and naturally assumes command—instructing others on how to handle situations and leveraging their skills. He can be demeaning toward those he deems worthless to the club (e.g., berating Asa for accidentally breaking her phone).
He is manipulative enough to maintain the lie that he is Chainsaw Man in order to boost his own popularity and status. When cornered, however, he quickly drops the act and admits the truth. He is not especially brave; under pressure he breaks down and screams for the real Chainsaw Man to save him, and he is easily intimidated. His devotion to Chainsaw Man is genuine and extreme—he co-led the Chainsaw Man Church as its public face without sharing the ulterior motives of Barem or Fami/Death, and the Fire Devil plan took a clear mental toll on him. Even after swearing never to get involved with Fami’s schemes again, his fandom immediately overrides that resolve whenever there is a chance to meet or help Chainsaw Man.
Backstory & Key History
After the former Class President’s death, Haruka becomes president of the Devil Hunter Club and student council. He introduces himself to Asa Mitaka, accepts her into the club, and shows off his chest cord, leading Yoru to briefly believe he is Chainsaw Man.
During the aquarium incident he is trapped with Asa, Denji, and other club members. When Asa confronts him about being Chainsaw Man, he admits the cord is a surgical implant and that he is merely a massive fan, then has a breakdown begging the real Chainsaw Man for rescue.
Later he is recruited as the public face of the Chainsaw Man Church under Fami (actually the Death Devil) and Barem. He appears on television promoting the Church, is publicly humiliated as part of the plan, and is ordered to simply act as the “face” while Fami handles the “brains.” During the Public Safety raid on the Church he is left largely in the dark about the true operations.
In the Aging Devil arc he is imprisoned in the Tokyo Devil Detention Center along with other Church associates. Freed by Asa and Fami, he initially wants nothing more to do with Fami because of the damage done to his and others’ families, but joins the rescue effort upon learning it involves freeing Chainsaw Man. He is present when Denji’s true identity as Chainsaw Man is revealed, witnesses the horrors involving Nayuta’s head, and later ends up recaptured by Public Safety alongside remaining allies.
Powers & Abilities
Haruka has no Devil contracts or special powers of his own. His only “ability” is the surgically implanted chest pull-cord, which serves no functional purpose beyond cosplay and deception. He relies on leadership, social manipulation, and his status within school and Church organizations.
Relationships
- Chainsaw Man / Denji: Object of intense, lifelong fandom. Haruka’s entire public persona and many of his decisions revolve around getting closer to or imitating his idol. The revelation that Denji is the real Chainsaw Man is a major shock.
- Asa Mitaka / Yoru: Club superior who accepts Asa into the Devil Hunter Club; later interacts with her during the aquarium crisis and the Church/Detention Center events.
- Fami / Death Devil: Recruits him as the Church’s public face. Haruka grows to fear and resent her after the Fire Devil fallout ruins lives, yet still follows when Chainsaw Man is involved.
- Barem Bridge: Fellow Church leader who reinforces that Haruka is only the “face” while others handle the real plans.
Notable Quotes
- “You complain, you aren’t a team player… and you fail to come through in the clutch. I expected better from you.”
- Admissions and breakdowns revealing he is only a fan with a surgical implant.
- #40Seigi Akoku
Keys: Seigi, Seigi Akoku, patriotic student, Akoku, Church recruit, Devil Hunter Club member
Seigi Akoku is a supporting character in the Academy Saga of Chainsaw Man. He is a high school student at Fourth East High School and a dedicated member of the Devil Hunter Club.
Appearance
Seigi is a heavyset teenager who is taller than average, with a notably muscular and imposing build for a high-schooler. He wears the standard male school uniform along with an Inagaki-style cap (rounded black cloth with a stiff brim, top button, and a front emblem featuring the katakana “デ,” likely short for “Devil Hunter”). When fighting he uses spiked brass knuckles. After his battle with Yuko he loses his right eye, which is initially bandaged and later covered by a black eyepatch.
Personality
Seigi is steadfast, disciplined, and action-oriented. When Yuko attacks the school he immediately charges in to buy time for other Devil Hunters, showing a strong sense of duty and willingness to put himself at risk. He remains committed to the Devil Hunter Club even after losing an eye, unlike at least one other surviving member who quit due to trauma. He is straightforward, reports accurately on events (crediting Asa’s role against Yuko), and continues practicing his combat skills even in hopeless situations. He appears loyal to his clubmates and follows group decisions, including later involvement with the Chainsaw Man Church circle, though his exact motivations for joining the Church itself are not deeply explored.
Backstory & Key History
During the Justice Devil arc, when the transformed Yuko attacks Fourth East High School, Seigi and two other Devil Hunter Club members confront her. He successfully lands hits with his spiked brass knuckles but is overpowered and loses his right eye.
In the aftermath he reports Asa’s performance to club/student-council president Haruka Iseumi and helps formally welcome Asa into the Devil Hunter Club. He participates in the group’s patrol at Tanashi Aquarium, becomes trapped in the Eternity Devil’s endless space with the others, helps gather fish for food, reacts with disappointment when Asa’s phone is broken, and practices punches while waiting. After Asa (via Yoru) destroys the aquarium and kills the Eternity Devil, he and the club explain the events to arriving Public Safety officers.
Later, as an associate of the Chainsaw Man Church, he is imprisoned in the Tokyo Devil Detention Center by Public Safety. Freed during Asa and Fami’s rescue operation, he joins the group (despite Haruka’s wariness of Fami) to help free the captive Chainsaw Man. He is present for the discovery that Chainsaw Man is Denji, the confrontation with Quanxi and Takagi, the escape, and subsequent events including guarding Denji’s burned apartment. In the aftermath of the Aging Devil arc he is re-apprehended by Public Safety alongside Haruka, Nobana, and Katana Man.
Powers & Abilities
- Hand-to-Hand Combat: Highly skilled in unarmed fighting. Demonstrates quick reflexes by blocking an attack from the transformed Yuko and landing multiple successive hits with spiked brass knuckles. Continues training even in confined or hopeless situations.
- No known Devil contracts or supernatural abilities; relies entirely on physical prowess and determination.
Relationships
- Haruka Iseumi: Club and student-council president; Seigi reports to him and frequently appears alongside him as part of the core Devil Hunter Club trio.
- Nobana Higashiyama: Fellow club member and frequent companion in both school activities and later imprisonment/escape sequences.
- Asa Mitaka / Yoru: Clubmate; Seigi credits her role in defeating Yuko and later joins efforts involving her to rescue Chainsaw Man.
- Yuko: Opponent during the school attack; the fight costs Seigi his right eye.
Notable Quotes
Seigi has relatively few standout lines, functioning more through action. Key moments include his reports on Asa’s performance and practical observations during the aquarium crisis (identifying Devil involvement, gathering food, practicing punches while waiting).
- #41Nobana Higashiyama
Keys: Nobana Higashiyama, college-funded brother, Kobeni's brother, Nobana, Higashiyama boy
Nobana Higashiyama is a supporting character in the Academy Saga of Chainsaw Man. He is a high school student at Fourth East High School, a member of the Devil Hunter Club, and later a tour guide for the Chainsaw Man Church. He is the younger brother of Kobeni Higashiyama.
Appearance
Nobana bears a strong resemblance to his older sister Kobeni, particularly in his face and eyes. He has two moles just under his right eye, short brown hair held in place by six hair clips on the right side (with the left side falling across his face), and is quite short. He wears the standard Fourth East High School boys’ uniform and occasionally the Devil Hunter Club cap. He is almost always depicted with sweat on his face and frequently blushing.
Personality
Like his sister, Nobana is perpetually anxious—even more so than Kobeni—and has so far shown no real moments of competence or bravery. He is easily embarrassed, stutters uncontrollably when trying to say words like “sex,” and has a fragile mind that quickly deteriorates under stress (most notably going insane and senselessly licking glass after only a few days trapped in the aquarium). His parents pressure him heavily into activities he dislikes, such as joining the Devil Hunter Club for potential scholarships. He is highly susceptible to manipulation and conspiracy theories; after joining the Chainsaw Man Church he fully buys into its extreme claims (e.g., that adult marriage is an American system designed to enslave the Japanese) and encourages students to marry and have children early.
Backstory & Key History
Nobana was forced by his mother to join the Devil Hunter Club for scholarship opportunities and was frequently bullied (made to light cigarettes for others with his lighter). He first appears after Yuko’s attack on the school alongside Haruka and Seigi, helping welcome Asa into the club.
During the aquarium date arc he is trapped with the group by the Eternity Devil. He panics, helps search for exits and food, witnesses Asa’s failures, and after three days completely loses his mind, licking the glass containers. He is freed when Asa turns the aquarium into a weapon and defeats the Devil.
Later he joins the Chainsaw Man Church, becoming a devoted tour guide who enthusiastically recites its conspiracy theories to visitors (including Denji and Miri). During the Public Safety raid he is ordered to arm followers and is restrained. In the Aging Devil arc he is imprisoned in the Tokyo Devil Detention Center with other Church associates, freed during Asa and Fami’s breakout, and reluctantly joins the mission to rescue Chainsaw Man. He is the one who finds the intact Pochita and reinserts him into Denji’s body, learning Denji’s true identity in the process. He later witnesses Barem’s atrocities involving Nayuta’s head and is re-imprisoned by Public Safety after the Aging Devil events.
Powers & Abilities
Nobana has no Devil contracts, combat skills, or special abilities. He is purely a civilian/support character who relies on others for survival and is easily overwhelmed in dangerous situations.
Relationships
- Kobeni Higashiyama: Older sister. They share strong physical resemblance and similarly anxious, pressured personalities, though Nobana lacks even Kobeni’s rare moments of competence.
- Haruka Iseumi & Seigi Akoku: Fellow Devil Hunter Club members and frequent companions; the three form a recurring trio through school, Church, and imprisonment arcs.
- Asa Mitaka / Yoru: Clubmate; interacts with her during the aquarium crisis and later rescue operations.
- Chainsaw Man Church (Barem, Fami/Death, Miri, etc.): Becomes a devoted member and tour guide, fully absorbing the organization’s ideology until the fallout ruins lives connected to it.
- Denji / Chainsaw Man: Gives him a Church tour, later helps reassemble him, and is shocked by the identity reveal.
Notable Quotes
- “I never wanted to join the Devil Hunter Club! My mom made me! She said it’d get me scholarships!”
- Frantic explanations and panic during the aquarium crisis.
- #42Fumiko Mifune
Keys: Mifune, Yoshida's partner, Denji's handler, fan girl agent, Public Safety woman, Fumiko Mifune, Fumiko, Nayuta's escort
Fumiko Mifune is a supporting character (later major and minor antagonist) in the Academy Saga of Chainsaw Man. She is a Public Safety Devil Hunter from Tokyo Special Division 7 who works with Hirofumi Yoshida. Officially assigned as Denji’s high-school “bodyguard” to protect his identity as Chainsaw Man, she later becomes a key figure in Public Safety’s extreme plans involving the Aging Devil and shifts allegiances according to self-preservation.
Appearance
Fumiko is a young woman with short, somewhat unkempt black hair whose bangs are tied into two small ponytails on either side of her face. She has unusually large eyes with giant black irises containing a red circle. She is almost always seen with a wide, uncanny smile. Despite being an adult (around 22), she frequently dresses in the Fourth East High School girls’ uniform. Outside school she wears black pants and a cropped shirt that exposes her midriff; on duty she wears the standard Public Safety uniform. Other characters describe her appearance as “cute.”
Personality
On the surface Fumiko is upbeat, jolly, and constantly smiling. In reality she is a calculating psychopath whose primary loyalty is to her own survival. She is hypersexual and predatory—groping Denji without consent on first meeting, offering sex despite the age gap, giving him nude photos, and treating sexual acts casually. This behavior is tied to her STD Devil contract and possible trauma. She claims to be a devoted “Denji Senpai” fan (not merely a Chainsaw Man fan) after witnessing his human vulnerability, yet her devotion is limited; she will not risk her life for him and shows callous disregard for his pets and suffering.
She is chaotic, unprofessional, and thrill-seeking (preferring to fight or sing karaoke over actual protection duties). She is fully willing to sacrifice 10,000 children for Public Safety’s plans, collect body-part “fan trophies,” and switch sides the moment she perceives a stronger winner. Multiple clones of herself exist worldwide via her STD Devil contract; each has developed distinct personalities and fears while remaining linked in a hivemind that shares information.
Backstory & Key History
At age 14 Fumiko contracted with the STD Devil, gaining the ability to turn sexual partners into perfect duplicates of herself that form a global hivemind. Her parents later died in the crossfire of Chainsaw Man’s battle against the Gun Fiend; their house was destroyed. She eventually joined Public Safety Special Division 7.
Assigned as Denji’s bodyguard, she infiltrates Fourth East High, immediately sexually harasses him, and proves largely ineffective at actual protection (singing karaoke during attacks, revealing secrets, failing to stop threats). During the Chainsaw Man Church crisis she abandons Denji and Nayuta to a mob and Barem. In the Aging Devil arc she is central to Public Safety’s plan to sacrifice 10,000 Japanese children so the Aging Devil can be consumed by Pochita. She forms a contract with the Aging Devil (organs sacrificed as weapons) and later betrays Public Safety when the tide turns, killing a fellow hunter and aligning with whichever side seems likelier to win. She continues shifting positions into the War Devil arc, ultimately prioritizing her own (and her clones’) survival.
Powers & Abilities
- STD Devil Contract: Any human who has unprotected sex with her is assimilated into a perfect duplicate of Fumiko, linked into a global hivemind that shares information and allows effective immortality (if one body dies, others persist). Clones develop individual personalities and can form their own Devil contracts. She has actively spread this effect worldwide.
- Aging Devil Contract: In exchange for protection from the Chainsaw Devil, the Aging Devil can sacrifice any of her organs as cutting weapons, causing her immense pain. Because of the STD hive, this primarily endangers only the specific body under contract.
- Physical Skills: Enhanced reflexes (dodged Nayuta’s chain). Competent with blunt weapons (baseball bat) and firearms, though overall combat experience is limited and she frequently requires rescue by more skilled hunters such as Quanxi or Yoshida.
- Infiltration & Social Manipulation: Able to pass as a high-school student and maintain a cheerful façade while pursuing personal and organizational agendas.
Relationships
- Denji / Chainsaw Man: Obsessive “Senpai” fan who claims genuine interest in him as a person after seeing his vulnerability, yet repeatedly abandons, objectifies, and prioritizes self-preservation over protecting him. Sexually predatory toward him from the first meeting.
- Hirofumi Yoshida: Colleague and superior in Special Division 7; he frequently reprimands her unprofessionalism and keeps her focused on missions.
- Nayuta: Antagonistic; Fumiko shows open callousness toward her and Denji’s situation.
- Public Safety / Aging Devil: Initially loyal enough to advance extreme sacrificial plans; later betrays them when survival demands it.
- Her clones: Global hivemind network; they meet periodically to exchange information and have developed distinct individual traits.
Notable Quotes
- “I’m a huge fan, Denji Senpai. Not a Chainsaw Man fan. A Denji Senpai fan.”
- “I promised myself… that in my dying moment, I’d side with the likelier winner.”
- #43Famine Devil
Keys: Famine Devil, Asa's recruiter, Death's sister, Fami, Four Horsemen, Church founder, Famine, false student, starving horseman
Fami (full title: the Famine Devil) is a minor antagonist in the Academy Saga of Chainsaw Man. She is the Devil who embodies the concept of famine and starvation and is one of the Four Horsemen. The Death Devil had previously used her name (“Fami”) as an alias, leading to widespread confusion about her identity. After failing to stop her eldest sister’s plans, Fami is brainwashed into serving Death and ordered to help plunge humanity into terror.
Appearance
Fami appears as a young woman with long, unkempt blonde hair that falls in uneven layers and strands—some sticking out, with bangs across her forehead and sides reaching her ears, plus longer bangs that reach her collarbones. Like the other Horsemen she has green multiple-ringed eyes. She wears the standard Fourth East High School uniform. She is almost always shown with a nervous or crying expression.
Personality
Fami is meek, taciturn, and highly outwardly emotional—strikingly different from her more composed or arrogant sisters. She is nervous when introducing herself to classmates, cries throughout her introduction, and openly bawls when ignored. At the same time she holds a high opinion of her own talents (refusing menial tasks like taking out the trash) yet will obediently crush ants when told to. She is overtly cowardly in combat, immediately begging for her life and offering a meager sum of money when overpowered.
She claims to pity humanity and wants to “save” people from suffering by releasing them through death, believing this is kinder than the pain War or Death would inflict. Despite this warped benevolence she is fatalistic and will casually drain the life of an innocent student who tries to help her in order to heal herself. She ultimately sides with humanity over pure Devil interests (pleading for Death to kill herself to spare mankind), but remains a Devil who prioritizes her own survival and methods. In combat she can become relatively calm and analytical, overestimating her current strength while still showing some tactical awareness.
Backstory & Key History
Alongside her sisters and the Weapon Devils, Fami fought Pochita in Hell; Pochita vanished mid-battle after changing forms and escaping to Earth. The Horsemen later reached the human world and parted ways. The Death Devil stole Fami’s name as an alias for most of the Academy Saga.
The real Fami eventually appears as a transfer student at Fourth East High School, nervously introducing herself and claiming she has come to save humanity. She is confronted by the Fake Chainsaw Man, who mistakes her for Death. After being repeatedly dismembered she absorbs the life of a student (and later ants) to regenerate, confirms she is the true Famine Devil, and pleads for her life while explaining her desire to stop the prophecy. The real Death Devil then arrives, restrains both Fami and the Fake Chainsaw Man with the Falling Devil, turns them into a meal, and consumes them. Fami is brainwashed into serving as one of Death’s pawns and is ordered (alongside the Fake Chainsaw Man) to spread chaos and terror among humanity. She later aids Chainsaw Man at points (supplying blood and helping restart him) in efforts related to stopping Yoru or Death, but remains under her sister’s control for a time.
Powers & Abilities
- Standard Devil Abilities: Regeneration, contracts, blood consumption, etc.
- Life Absorption: By physical contact she drains the life force of humans, Devils, or animals, reducing them to withered corpses. The absorbed life can be used to heal even mortal wounds (including full dismemberment or decapitation). The amount of life needed does not always scale proportionally to the damage (ants can restore her from fatal injuries).
- Immense Durability: Can survive and continue speaking even when cut into pieces or beheaded.
- Hand-to-Hand Combat: Possesses basic martial arts skill and analytical ability in a fight, though her current power level appears significantly diminished compared to her past self.
- Potential massive power increase if the Death Devil (the strongest Primal Fear) is erased, as famine/starvation would become the dominant fear in a world without death.
Relationships
- Death Devil: Eldest sister. Fami has a relatively less hostile relationship with her than with Yoru and shares a concern for humanity’s survival, yet still tries to convince Death to end her own life. She is later brainwashed and forced to serve her.
- Yoru (War Devil): Younger sister. Fami dislikes Yoru’s personality, showboating, and desire for endless war; Yoru in turn considers Fami weak.
- Pochita / Chainsaw Man: Former battlefield opponent in Hell. In the present she seeks to use him to erase other Horsemen (including herself in some plans) and has aided him with blood and reactivation to stop greater threats.
- Fake Chainsaw Man: Temporary combatant and later fellow brainwashed pawn under Death.
- Humanity / Fourth East High students: Claims to want to save them from suffering, yet casually drains their life when convenient for her own recovery.
Notable Quotes
- “I am she who absorbs life. She who saves people from their suffering via death. I am one of the Four Horsemen feared by humans and Devils alike. Pleased to make your acquaintance. My name is Famine Devil! Please call me Fami!”
- Pleas for her life and offers of money when overpowered.
- #44Nail Fiend
Keys: nail-headed fiend, Denji's neighbor fiend, Nail Fiend, hammer fiend, apartment fiend
Nail Fiend is a Fiend who embodies the fear of nails and serves as a Devil Hunter in Public Safety’s Tokyo Special Division 7. They frequently partner with Katana Man, assisting in operations against the Chainsaw Man Church and later becoming involved in the events surrounding the Aging Devil arc.
Appearance
The Nail Fiend wears the standard Public Safety office-worker uniform and jacket. Their most striking feature is a face completely split in half: the right side is cracked open, exposing nail-riddled brain matter (with a prominent crack on the right cheek), while the left side is partially covered by a long fringe that reaches the nose. The hair on the back of the head is medium-length and flares outward. Their overall form is androgynous—pants worn high like some female Public Safety members, yet with a more masculine torso, chest, and shoulders, plus a prominent Adam’s apple. They are almost always seen carrying a hammer.
Personality
Flamboyant, jovial, and theatrical, the Nail Fiend strikes poses in combat, incorporates flips and slides into their movements, and often rests a hand on their hip during conversation. They use terms of endearment (“moppets,” “dears,” “the poor thing”) and refer to themselves with unisex language. They treat dangerous situations with casual confidence.
They claim moral principles, particularly valuing the innocence of children and criticizing the Chainsaw Man Church for arming minors instead of letting them study. In practice they have a violent streak—smashing a student’s head open simply for giving a non-committal answer about studying. Their protectiveness toward children appears genuine enough that the ongoing culling of Fire Devil-contracted youths leads them to betray Public Safety. They mock Katana Man’s romanticized view of the yakuza, tease others (including Yoru), and show fleeting sexual interest in men (commenting that sleeping Denji looks cute) before quickly losing interest due to rudeness or grossness.
Backstory & Key History
Originally a normal human who died under unknown circumstances, their corpse was possessed by the Nail Devil, creating the Nail Fiend. They were later employed by Public Safety (likely after Makima’s death) and assigned to Special Division 7 alongside Katana Man.
In the Chainsaw Man Church arc they raid the Church headquarters with Katana Man, non-lethally pinning armed student members to the walls by their clothing with nails, then violently punishing one for insufficient commitment to studying. They prepare to face the subsequent wave of pseudo-Chainsaw monsters.
In the Aging Devil arc they are assigned to guard the Tokyo Devil Detention Center. After an attempted ambush on Asa/Fami’s group, they and Katana Man are persuaded to form a temporary truce and join the effort to confront Chainsaw Man, citing fatigue with killing children. They participate in the fight against Quanxi (withstanding multiple stabs), help secure the group’s escape, watch over the reassembled Denji, and later remain behind to guard Fami’s apartment with Seigi while others search for Nayuta.
Powers & Abilities
- Standard Fiend Abilities: Enhanced physical capabilities relative to humans, regeneration via blood, and other baseline Devil traits (though weaker than a full Devil form). Cannot form contracts.
- Enhanced Physique & Speed: Moves fast enough to disarm an entire squad of gunmen while dodging bullets. Swings a hammer with sufficient force and precision to drive nails into concrete walls from a distance before targets can react.
- Hammer Proficiency: Primary weapon; used for both pinning attacks with nails and direct blunt-force strikes (including lethal head trauma).
- Combat style is flashy and acrobatic, incorporating poses, flips, and slides.
Relationships
- Katana Man: Primary partner and frequent collaborator in Public Safety operations. They banter, support each other’s goals, and fight side-by-side; the Nail Fiend teases his delusions about the yakuza while still cooperating closely.
- Public Safety / Special Division 7: Employers; they ultimately prioritize personal moral limits (especially regarding children) over orders when the two conflict.
- Asa Mitaka / Yoru / Fami’s group: Temporary allies after the Detention Center confrontation; they join the effort to reach Chainsaw Man and later help guard the group.
- Quanxi: Combat opponent during the Detention Center breakout; the Nail Fiend withstands her attacks long enough to continue fighting.
- Chainsaw Man Church members / students: Targets of apprehension; objects of both protective lectures and sudden violence.
Notable Quotes
- “The precious hands of innocent children! Are meant for studying! Don’t put guns into them!!”
- Casual endearments and taunts during combat and conversation.
- #45Takagi
Keys: chicken devil owner, Justice Devil contractor, Takagi, Asa's classmate, class president
Takagi was a Public Safety Devil Hunter and member of Tokyo Special Division 7. He serves as the initial antagonist of the Aging Devil arc, attempting to prevent Asa and Fami’s group from rescuing the imprisoned Chainsaw Man inside the Tokyo Devil Detention Center.
Appearance
Takagi is a middle-aged Japanese man dressed in standard Public Safety attire. His hair is trimmed short and neat, with a short tuft falling on the left side of his fringe. His most distinctive feature is a stitched, arc-shaped scar that runs from his forehead, down across his left eye, and stops short of the top of his lip. His remaining eye appears drowsy with prominent eye bags, suggesting exhaustion from recent Devil-related events.
Personality
Takagi is most comfortable when he holds clear authority and can order stronger subordinates to handle the dirty work while keeping his own hands clean. When that control slips, he either retreats or violently snaps. He claims deep love for his wife (whom he describes as a symbol of everything good in the world), yet previously cheated on her in a six-month affair that he dismisses as minor. He shows casual sexism in his final moments and general apathy toward others’ suffering—he has no objection to Denji’s organ harvesting and, upon learning his wife had become a Pseudo-Chainsaw, wishes an annoying neighbor had transformed instead. Overall he is self-serving, hypocritical, and quick to leverage personal threats when authority fails.
Backstory & Key History
Takagi joined Public Safety and was assigned to Special Division 7 at some point prior to the events of the Academy Saga. He conducted a six-month extramarital affair while still married.
One week after Public Safety’s battle against the Chainsaw Man Church, he is tasked with guarding the imprisoned (and dismembered) Denji at the Tokyo Devil Detention Center. When Asa and Fami’s group storms the facility, Takagi first tries to delay them with conversation while summoning Katana Man and the Nail Fiend. After Asa persuades the pair to form a temporary truce, Takagi threatens them with the loss of their personal goals if they disobey, but they still defect. He flees, promising to send someone stronger.
He later returns with Quanxi and orders her to kill the intruders. When Quanxi hesitates upon seeing Denji’s head (honoring a prior promise to Kishibe), Takagi snaps, ranting about not being able to trust any Public Safety division, and threatens to dispose of the bodies of Quanxi’s girlfriends rather than return them. Before he can force the issue, his own Fire Devil-transformed wife (freed earlier by Katana Man) attacks and kills him; she then devours his corpse.
Powers & Abilities
Takagi possesses no unique Devil contracts, enhanced physical abilities, or standout combat skills. As an ordinary human agent he relies entirely on authority, subordinates, and institutional power. When outmatched he prefers to flee rather than fight.
Relationships
- His Wife (Pseudo-Chainsaw): Claims to love her deeply and view her as a symbol of goodness, yet cheated on her for six months. She ultimately kills and eats him after being transformed by a Fire Devil contract and freed.
- Katana Man & Nail Fiend: Subordinates in Special Division 7 whom he attempts to order and then threaten; both ultimately betray him.
- Quanxi: Another subordinate he tries to command and later blackmail using the bodies of her girlfriends; she refuses his final order.
- Asa Mitaka / Yoru / Fami’s group: Opponents he tries to stop from rescuing Chainsaw Man.
- Denji / Chainsaw Man: Prisoner under his watch; Takagi shows no concern for the pain of organ harvesting or dismemberment.
Notable Quotes
- “You were right. I never should have joined the Special Division.”
- Admission that the only wrong thing he ever did was cheat on his wife for six months.
- #46Kentaro Ishita
Keys: Kentaro Ishita, Fourth East hunter, Devil Hunter Club member, Kentaro, Ishita
Kentaro Ishita is a supporting character in the Academy Saga of Chainsaw Man. He is the current Prime Minister of Japan and appears during the Aging Devil arc as one of the high-ranking government officials involved in critical decisions regarding Public Safety’s plans with the Aging Devil and Chainsaw Man’s powers.
Appearance
Kentaro Ishita is depicted as an older man, consistent with other senior government figures in the series. Specific physical details beyond his role and age are limited in available descriptions; he is shown in formal attire befitting his position as Prime Minister during cabinet-level meetings.
Personality
As Prime Minister, Ishita participates in high-stakes discussions with a measured, procedural demeanor. He focuses on verifying information (such as the erasure of the concept of “ears”) through official channels and transcripts. He operates within the collective decision-making of the cabinet rather than dominating it, deferring to or being influenced by stronger personalities such as former Finance Minister Tadashi Hasegawa when extreme measures are proposed. His presence underscores the bureaucratic and self-preserving nature of Japan’s leadership in the face of existential Devil threats.
Backstory & Key History
Ishita serves as the sitting Prime Minister of Japan during the events of the Academy Saga. Little is revealed about his personal history prior to his appearance.
In Chapter 174 of the Aging Devil arc, he convenes or participates in a meeting with other top government officials (including the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Hadaji Sakagami, Minister of Defense Shin Toma, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yuki Tomoda, former Finance Minister Tadashi Hasegawa, and Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Miki Takanashi). Fumiko Mifune of Public Safety is also present. The group discusses the recent erasure and restoration of the concept of “ears” by Pochita, confirming the reality of Chainsaw Man’s power to erase concepts.
Fumiko explains Public Safety’s broader goal of using Chainsaw Man to “synthesize human evolution” by erasing harmful concepts, nations, and other elements. She then presents the Aging Devil’s offer: it will willingly allow itself to be eaten and erased by Pochita in exchange for the public killing of 10,000 Japanese children (aged infancy to nine) in front of mirrors. After initial shock, Hasegawa pushes the group to accept the deal, using implied threats against Takanashi’s own children to secure compliance. Ishita, as Prime Minister, is part of the leadership that effectively green-lights the horrific bargain for what is framed as Japan’s long-term future. The meeting is interrupted mid-discussion when Pochita erases the Mouth Devil (along with others), causing mouths to vanish from everyone present.
Powers & Abilities
None. Kentaro Ishita is an ordinary human politician with no Devil contracts, combat skills, or supernatural abilities. His influence derives solely from his position as Prime Minister and the institutional power of the Japanese government.
Relationships
- Japanese Cabinet / Senior Officials: Works alongside ministers such as Hadaji Sakagami, Shin Toma, Yuki Tomoda, Tadashi Hasegawa, and Miki Takanashi. Hasegawa appears to hold significant sway in the room.
- Fumiko Mifune / Public Safety: Receives briefings and proposals from Public Safety regarding the use of Chainsaw Man and deals with Devils such as the Aging Devil.
- Aging Devil: Indirectly involved in the government’s acceptance of the Devil’s sacrificial contract offer.
- Pochita / Chainsaw Man: Discusses and seeks to utilize (or control) the effects of concept erasure caused by Chainsaw Man’s actions.
Notable Quotes
Limited direct dialogue is recorded. He discusses the erasure of the word/concept “ear” based on meeting transcripts and participates in the broader cabinet deliberation on the Aging Devil’s terms.
- #47Loneliness Fiend
Keys: isolation fiend, Loneliness Fiend, Asa's devil, lonely fiend
Loneliness Fiend was a Fiend that embodied the concept of loneliness (deriving power from autophobia/monophobia — the fear of being alone, isolated, or abandoned). He serves as the main antagonist of the third chapter (“The Day They Became Buddies”) of the light novel Chainsaw Man: Buddy Stories.
Appearance
The Loneliness Fiend takes the form of an average man distinguished by numerous fangs.
Personality
Little is known about the Loneliness Fiend’s personality beyond his core motivation. Unlike most Devils/Fiends whose primary drive is to kill and consume humans, his goal appears to be forcing others to experience the same crushing loneliness felt by his deceased host. He methodically spreads isolation rather than engaging in indiscriminate slaughter for its own sake.
Backstory & Key History
At some point before Aki Hayakawa joined Public Safety as a Devil Hunter, the Loneliness Devil possessed the corpse of a man who had died alone in an apartment complex, becoming the Loneliness Fiend.
Once established in the building, the Fiend operated on a grim routine: every two days he moved floor by floor, ringing doorbells in sequence starting from the first room until someone answered. Whoever opened the door was immediately shot with his special crossbow. The victim would faint for fifteen minutes while every person they loved died during that window. Over the course of six days he claimed three victims and wiped out their families.
On the sixth day he reached room 401, where Aki and Himeno were staking out the building to capture him. A fierce battle ensued. Himeno ultimately killed the Loneliness Fiend. During the fight Aki was shot by the crossbow but remained unaffected; afterward he explained the weapon’s true effect to Himeno and why it had no impact on him (Aki at that point had no living loved ones left to kill).
Powers & Abilities
- Standard Fiend Abilities: As a Fiend he cannot form contracts and is considerably weaker than his original Devil form, but retains baseline Devil traits such as enhanced physical capability and regeneration via blood.
- Crossbow Arms: Possesses two pure-black crossbows in place of (or as) his arms that have infinite ammunition. A successful shot causes the target to faint for fifteen minutes; during that time every person the victim loves dies. The ability does not kill the shot individual directly — it isolates them by eliminating their loved ones.
Relationships
- Deceased Host: The original human whose lonely death the Fiend inherited and sought to replicate in others.
- Aki Hayakawa & Himeno: The Public Safety Devil Hunters who hunted and ultimately killed him. Their partnership during this mission is the focus of the Buddy Stories chapter in which the Fiend appears.
- Apartment Complex Residents: Primary victims; three families were destroyed by his crossbow ability before he was stopped.
Notable Quotes
No specific dialogue is widely recorded; the Fiend’s characterization is conveyed primarily through his methodical actions and the effect of his ability.
- #48Aging Devil
Keys: Aging Devil, Aging, Primal Fear, tree world devil, Public Safety contractor, immortality prison
Aging Devil is a Primal Fear Devil that embodies the concept of aging. It serves as the titular main antagonist of the Aging Devil arc in the Academy Saga of Chainsaw Man.
Appearance
The Aging Devil is a tall, thin, and gaunt entity resembling a withered aggregate of flesh riddled with holes—the largest gaping in the center of its chest where a heart would be. Its face emerges from the split head of an old person with long hair; the face itself is a smooth surface containing only a mouth, connected by strings to the two halves of the previous face. Its feet have raised heels resembling stilettos. It sits upon a throne constructed of flesh and bones, decorated with human fingers on the back and tongues, mouths, and teeth at the base, which is supported by the backs of two naked men whose hands have been cut off.
Personality
The Aging Devil is profoundly apathetic toward all forms of life, including its own. It detests youth (likely because the young do not fear aging) and is willing to demand the mass sacrifice of children. Despite this indifference it maintains an amicable, almost cooperative relationship with Public Safety, even complimenting Yoshida for subduing Pochita. It can be lazy and easily annoyed, expressing irritation at being asked to “hit” opponents or at the futility of attacks against it. Paradoxically, it claims to want humans to live longer so their minds can reach new culminations of thought and discover previously unseen concepts and possibilities. It possesses knowledge of how Denji defeated Makima and describes the act of being fully consumed as “romantic.”
Backstory & Key History
As a Primal Fear the Aging Devil has existed for as long as the fear of aging itself and has never experienced death or reincarnation.
During the Aging Devil arc, Public Safety uses an existing contract with it (activated via mirrors and blood-written commands) to strike Pochita after the Ear Devil’s erasure. The Aging Devil later reveals, through Fumiko Mifune, that it has no attachment to its own life and offers to allow itself to be completely eaten and erased by Pochita in exchange for the public killing of 10,000 Japanese children (infancy to age nine) in front of mirrors. It repeatedly attempts to subdue or kill Pochita alongside or in coordination with Yoru and Katana Man, regenerating from severe damage each time.
Frustrated that neither Pochita nor Yoru are “mature” enough, it transports Asa/Yoru and Denji into Aging’s World—a realm where no one can age or die and where prolonged imprisonment eventually turns victims into trees. Inside and outside the realm it continues to pressure Pochita to consume it under the child-sacrifice contract, uses Public Safety agents’ organs as weapons, and attempts rapid-aging attacks. Ultimately a combination of Pochita’s relentless assault, Fumiko’s betrayal, Yoshida’s Octopus Devil, and one of its own long-term victims traps the Aging Devil inside its own realm. Faced with the prospect of being permanently confined with Denji, it negotiates and returns the trapped humans to the real world, accepting defeat for the time being.
Powers & Abilities
- Primal Fear Status / Nigh-Absolute Immortality: Cannot be killed by conventional means and does not reincarnate; regenerates almost instantly even from extreme dismemberment by Pochita.
- Hell Connection via Mirrors: Manifests floating mirrors linked to Hell, allowing remote delivery of colossal physical attacks (giant fists, etc.) and two-way communication with the human world.
- Rapid Aging / Withering: Can age targets or objects into dust or transform living beings into trees through physical contact or directed power.
- Aging’s World: Creates and controls an alternate realm where time effectively stops for victims—no aging, no death, no hunger or thirst—while prolonged stays (centuries to millennia) cause gradual transformation into trees. Devil powers do not function inside this realm for most entities.
- Contract-Based Remote Attacks: Through contracts with Public Safety agents, can sacrifice their body parts/organs (fingers, cervical spine, etc.) to deliver powerful cleaving strikes or continuous assaults.
- Standard Devil Abilities: Blood consumption, contract formation, regeneration, etc., all at an extreme Primal Fear level.
- Physical power sufficient to overwhelm Pochita with single blows and casually stop high-level attacks from Yoru.
Relationships
- Public Safety / Fumiko Mifune / Yoshida: Cooperative and contractual relationship; offers its own erasure in exchange for child sacrifices and assists in attempts to control or eliminate Chainsaw Man.
- Pochita / Chainsaw Man / Denji: Primary target and reluctant potential “consumer.” Attempts to force Pochita to eat it under lethal terms for children; ultimately forced into a negotiated withdrawal.
- Yoru / Asa Mitaka: Views them as immature; transports them into Aging’s World and withstands their strongest attacks.
- Aging Devil’s Victims: Humans previously contracted or trapped in its realm (some for decades or centuries); one ultimately helps trap the Devil itself.
- Japanese Government: Indirectly involved through Public Safety’s proposal of the 10,000-child sacrifice deal.
Notable Quotes
- “Neither Chainsaw Man nor War Devil are mature enough to talk to me. Time to have them grow up.”
- Descriptions of being fully consumed as “romantic.”
- #49Bat Devil
Keys: Bat Devil, Meowy's kidnapper, winged devil of Tokyo, leech's brother, Power's eater
Bat Devil is a Devil who embodies the fear of bats. He serves as the primary antagonist of the Bat Devil arc in the Public Safety Saga and later reappears as a minor antagonist in the Justice Devil arc of the Academy Saga after reincarnation.
Appearance
First Incarnation: An enormous humanoid bat with a grotesque face full of multiple sharp teeth and large round eyes. Skin flaps connecting his arms to his torso function as wings. During his introduction he is missing his right arm (later regenerated by drinking Denji’s blood). He wears a birdcage on a chain around his neck in which he keeps Meowy prisoner.
Second Incarnation (post-reincarnation): A more rabid, furrier, and less muscular form. Eyes are constantly bulged; the snout is fleshy and leads into an always-open mouth filled with jagged teeth. Fur on the arms ends at the elbows, transitioning into fleshy human-like forearms and hands with wing-like growths. Feet have developed into eagle-like talons. Overall appearance is fluffier and less defined than the original.
Personality
First Incarnation: Possesses a strong hatred of humans, largely stemming from nearly being killed by one and losing an arm, which forced him into hiding. He has a refined (if predatory) sense of taste, finding Denji and Power’s blood disgusting while preferring healthy humans and especially children. He treats humanity as a menu of meals and is capable of forming affectionate bonds with other Devils (he was the boyfriend of the Leech Devil, who later mourns him).
Second Incarnation: Far less intelligent and seemingly incapable of speech. Acts purely on savage instinct as a mindless rampaging monster.
Backstory & Key History
At some point the Bat Devil entered a romantic relationship with the Leech Devil. He was nearly killed by a human, escaping only after losing an arm. While hiding, he encountered Power in the countryside, took her cat Meowy hostage, and forced her to bring him a human so he could drink their blood and regenerate the missing limb.
In the Bat Devil arc, Power lures Denji to him under the pretense of a rescue mission. The Bat Devil drinks Denji’s blood, regrows his arm, then swallows both Meowy and Power whole. As he flies toward the city to hunt more humans, Denji clings to him, transforms into Chainsaw Man, and engages him in a prolonged aerial and street battle. Despite using his Mouth Cannon and raw strength, the Bat Devil is ultimately cut to pieces and killed by Denji.
After dying and returning to Hell, he eventually dies there as well and reincarnates on Earth in a weakened, more bestial form. During the Justice Devil arc he rampages through the city, devouring people, and briefly swallows Asa and Yuko before Denji hurls the Cockroach Devil into him, instantly killing the Bat Devil a second time and freeing the girls.
Powers & Abilities
- Standard Devil Abilities: Blood consumption for regeneration, enhanced physical capabilities, etc.
- Bat Wings / Flight: Capable of flight despite enormous size; can travel large distances quickly while carrying significant weight.
- Mouth Cannon: Compresses his mouth into a gun-barrel shape and fires an immense blast of air pressure capable of demolishing buildings (likely inspired by echolocation).
- Enhanced Strength: Can punch through house ceilings, throw cars with one arm, and fight effectively in mid-air.
- Enhanced Durability: Survives falls from great heights, being punched through walls, and being struck by thrown vehicles with only minor injuries.
- Enhanced Smell: Can detect the scents of numerous humans from a significant distance.
- Blood Regeneration: Drinking blood allows rapid regeneration of lost limbs (demonstrated by fully regrowing a severed arm).
After reincarnation most unique abilities and intelligence are lost; he becomes a simpler, weaker, instinct-driven threat.
Relationships
- Leech Devil: Girlfriend in his first incarnation; she mourns his death and seeks revenge.
- Power: Forced her to bring him a human sacrifice by holding Meowy hostage; later swallowed her.
- Denji / Chainsaw Man: Primary adversary. Drank his blood, fought him extensively, and was killed by him (twice across incarnations).
- Meowy: Held as a hostage in a birdcage and later swallowed.
- Asa Mitaka & Yuko: Brief victims during his second incarnation rampage; swallowed them before being killed.
Notable Quotes
- “Such strength in that puny body! Why would you use that strength to save humans?!”
- Complaints about the disgusting taste of Denji’s and Power’s blood.
- #50Chainsaw Devil/Pochita
Keys: Makima's obsession, Pochita, Hero of Hell, erasure devil, Yoru's enemy, Chainsaw Devil, Denji's dog, Denji's heart, concept eater, Denji's first friend
Pochita is the titular overarching protagonist of Chainsaw Man. He is the Chainsaw Devil, the original Chainsaw Man, and the Devil that other Devils fear most. After a near-fatal battle he became Denji’s heart, enabling the hybrid form known as Chainsaw Man.
Appearance
Near-death / Dog Form: A small, orange, canine-like Devil with a chainsaw blade protruding from the center of his head. Handles emerge from his body so he can be wielded like a chainsaw; his short tail is shaped like a chainsaw pull-cord.
True Devil Form: A large, muscular humanoid Devil covered in dark armored plates/scales. Each arm splits at the elbow into two forearms ending in chainsaws; another chainsaw protrudes from the front of his head. He has horns, no visible eyes (yet can still see), and an intestine still connected to his stomach wrapped around his neck like a scarf or collar (usable for carrying people or impaling foes). He towers over normal humans.
Hybrid / Heart Form (inside Denji): Reduced in size, lacking the head chainsaw, appendages, and handles, but retaining his cute canine face. Connected to Denji via blood vessels; Denji’s chest cord attaches to the top of Pochita’s head. When temporarily removed and regenerating, he can take on a form closely mimicking Denji’s hybrid appearance (with armored arms) to deceive others.
Personality
Unusually kind and loyal for a Devil. In his weakened state he communicates only through barks and whines like a real dog. After fusing with Denji he speaks telepathically (especially in dreams), often warning Denji not to “open the door.” He deeply cares for Denji, having grown attached after the boy saved his life, and loves listening to Denji’s simple dreams of a normal life. He willingly gave his heart so Denji could pursue those dreams.
In his true form he is more erratic and lethally strong—casual movements can kill bystanders—yet he still remembers and tries to fulfill Denji’s wishes (e.g., tasting a non-rotten hamburger, going on a date). He answers cries for help from both humans and Devils, but is selective and ruthless when necessary. He does not erase concepts lightly and only targets extremely dangerous ones. By the end of the Academy Saga he willingly sacrifices his own existence to give Denji a freer future.
Backstory & Key History
In Hell, Pochita was the legendary “Hero of Hell” / “Devil that Devils fear the most.” By consuming other Devils he permanently erased their names and the concepts they embodied (Nazis, nuclear weapons, WWII, AIDS, certain diseases, etc.), preventing reincarnation. This made him a target of the Four Horsemen, Weapon Devils, and Primal Fears. In a climactic battle he was reduced to a near-death dog-like form and vanished, ending up on Earth.
He met a young, debt-ridden Denji at the boy’s father’s grave. After Denji shared his blood and dreams, they formed a contract and hunted Devils together. When the Zombie Devil’s forces killed Denji, Pochita became his heart in exchange for Denji living a “normal life,” creating the hybrid Chainsaw Man.
Throughout the Public Safety Saga Pochita remains inside Denji, occasionally communicating in dreams. In the Control Devil arc he temporarily takes full control, rampages as the true Chainsaw Man, and later mimics Denji to fight Makima. In the Academy Saga he continues supporting Denji, erases additional concepts when necessary, and ultimately chooses to consume himself—erasing his own existence—so Denji can chase dreams unburdened by the constant trauma tied to being Chainsaw Man.
Powers & Abilities
- Devil Erasure: Consuming a Devil (often just the head) permanently erases its name and the concept it represents from existence and memory. The world adapts around the absence. Partial consumption can still achieve full erasure in many cases. Self-consumption can rewrite reality so he never existed.
- Immense Physical Stats: Extraordinary speed (appears to teleport), strength (casual movements lethal; can destroy buildings and decapitate high-tier opponents), durability (survives space, atmospheric re-entry, massive explosions, and Makima’s strongest attacks), and hearing (detects distant cries for help).
- Immense Regeneration: Can fully regenerate from just his heart, even without blood and under extreme conditions.
- Hybrid Empowerment: As Denji’s heart he enables the Chainsaw Man transformation and shares power; can temporarily separate and act independently.
- Standard Devil Abilities: Blood consumption, contracts, revival in Hell (though his erasure power makes him uniquely feared).
- Power level places him among the highest in the series—below pure Primal Fears in some contexts but capable of fighting hordes of Devils, Horsemen, and Hybrids, and of permanently removing existential threats.
Relationships
- Denji: Closest bond. Partner, heart, best friend, and emotional anchor. Pochita lives for Denji’s dreams and ultimately sacrifices himself for Denji’s freedom.
- Makima / Control Devil: Former target and adversary; she sought to control or use him. He ultimately chooses to fight her after realizing her vision would eliminate even “bad movies.”
- Four Horsemen & Weapon Devils: Ancient enemies from the Hell battle that left him near death.
- Kobeni Higashiyama: Briefly carried and protected during his true-form rampage.
- Humanity: Ambivalent but protective—has erased numerous concepts that threatened human existence while still being a Devil.
Notable Quotes
- “I’ve always... loved listening to you talk about your dreams. This is a contract. I’ll give you my heart. In exchange... show me your dreams.”
- Warnings in dreams not to “open the door.”
