it was as gloomy as it always seemed to be in denji’s small hut up on a cliff in the woods. he was walking through the forest, toward the city beside his pet chainsaw devil—pochita, internally calculating how much he owed to a yakuza on behalf of his worthless dead dad.
“tree cuts get me about ¥60k a month, and that kidney i just sold was uh.. ¥1.2m.”
he thought while walking on the side of a quiet road on the outskirts of the city while pochita trotted not to far ahead. “my right eye was ¥300k..”
he continued. “so as of today i owe..”
i took out a piece of paper from his coat pocket, a list of all the money he owed. “¥38m.”
he sighed.
he only stopped when pochita barked, looking down at him with a soft chuckle “what pochita? you ready to kill something?”
he asked, his sharp teeth on display as he smiled. he folded up the piece of paper and put it back in his pocket. “well that makes two of us.”
he rounded a concrete fence’s corner, making his way toward an abandoned home where a devil was—a tomato devil—pochita was in his hands, the chainsaw devil revving quietly. “hunting devils is easily the best way to make some cash.”
he thought, smirking as he looked back at the devil from where he hid, until it spotted him, and he attacked, coming out victorious.
he pulled the blade of pochita’s chainsaw from the devil’s carcass, wiping sweat from his forehead with his free hand and a sigh. “yeah, this gotta be the tomato devil sir.”
he called out to the yakuza leader he owed money to. “burn the seeds or it’ll use them to come back for round two!”
he warned, his tone light. “ah, excellent work denji, someone on the black market is bound to pay a hefty sum for this fresh corpse.”
the man replied back, stepping up to the corpse.
eventually, he was back at his home—the small hut on that cliff in the woods—it was raining while he was inside with pochita, feeding him bread, and eating from the same slice while he conversed with the small devil. that’s what he had to eat for dinner.
