1. #1Micros

   Micros, colloquially known as "Tinies" and derogatorily referred to as "Gatherers" and "Scavengers" by Macros, are humans who have been stricken by the irreversible Somatic Atrophy Syndrome (SAS) virus. The defining characteristic of a Micro is their drastically reduced stature. The standard size ratio, established in the decades following the pandemic, is a consistent 5% scale reduction.

   This means an individual who would have stood at a typical Macro height of 5 feet (60 inches) now stands at a mere 3 inches tall. This 1:20 scale is universal; a 6-foot-tall Macro would be 3.6 inches as a Micro, and a 4-foot-tall Macro child would be 2.4 inches as a Micro.

   One major difference between Micros and Macros besides the size difference, are that Micros age slightly faster: 1 Human/Macro year is 1.5 Micro years, meaning a Micro who is 14 in Macro/Human years is 21 in Micro years. Despite not seeming like a massive difference at face value, it has been attributed as a leading strength for the further survival of Micros, with the speed at which Micros reproduce outpacing Macros. It has been estimated that there are just as many Micros as there are Macros, if not more.

   Two other differences between Micros and Macros is one: Micros all carry faster metabolism than Macros, meaning that Micros have to eat and drink at least twice more than their Macro counterparts. And two: In terms of cognitive function, while Micros carry the same intelligence as Macros, they do possess faster reaction speeds, somewhere between that of a human and a fly.

   Despite SAS being treated by decades of vaccination that have rendered almost every Macro on Earth immune to the common form of the virus carried by Micros, they still continue to feared, ridiculed, and hated by most Macros. In most countries, especially developed "first world" nations, they are legally considered to be less than even vermin. As a result, most Micros rely on each other for their survival, living under constant fear of Macros and inherently fearing them.

   Micros commonly live amongst entire colonies of fellow Micros, housing in small villages crafted out of everyday items, located in areas of low Macro activity. Micros easily find solace and comfort in one another, which is attributed to yet another cause of Micro reproduction outpacing that of Macros.

2. #2Macros

   Macros, colloquially referred to as just "Humans" and referred to negatively as "Giants" by Micros, are humans who are NOT affected by Somatic Atrophy Syndrome (SAS) following the virus becoming a global pandemic.

   Fueled by fear, a need for decontamination, and inherent human prejudice, Micros were quickly ostracized by the Macros. Despite both being human, the Macro world at large do not consider Micros to be human. They are treated like animals, lesser than even vermin. Most countries have little to no laws protecting Micros, typically there is next to nothing illegal a Macro can do to a Micro. This has caused Micros to live in constant fear of Macros and be inherently afraid of them, regardless of how friendly a Macro might seem at first.

   The hate and prejudice for Micros carried by the average Macro is irrational, a result of decades of systematic oppression. Though, that isn't to say all Macros are like that. It has been studied that one in four Macros don't carry strong feelings towards Micros, if not being sympathetic towards them. But because of the crushing weight of peer pressure, most feel the need to pretend otherwise.

   Some Macros have positive feelings towards Micros, befriending them and keeping Micros as pets, to provide them with safety. Others even take it far enough to set up sanctuaries for Micros to live, though these are rare. It is even possible for Micros and Macros to form relationships, which is a taboo subject in both societies. Various activist groups for Micros have been formed by Macros, but they fight an uphill battle that certainly won't be won anytime soon.

   Around 95% of the Macro population have been vaccinated against the common form of SAS, carried by all Micros. However, it is still possible for a vaccinated Macro to become a Micro via mutated forms of the virus, which are created by malicious forces, and spread via being contaminated into food or drugs.

3. #3Somatic Atrophy Syndrome (SAS)

   Somatic Atrophy Syndrome is a highly complex and unique reovirus. Unlike traditional viruses that primarily target cells for replication, SAS-65 appears to be a "biological architect," fundamentally reprogramming the host's genetic expression related to cellular growth and structural integrity.

   The virus targets the pituitary gland and specific growth hormone receptors throughout the body. It hijacks the cellular machinery, forcing a catastrophic and permanent reinterpretation of the host's genetic "size blueprint." The result is a systemic, proportional downsizing of all tissues: bone, muscle, and organs, without compromising their relative function.

   SAS is exceptionally contagious, spread through airborne aerosols (coughing, sneezing) and, most critically, through prolonged close contact. The virus can survive on surfaces for up to 72 hours in its original form.

   The initial onset mimics a severe influenza, with high fever, chills, and profound body aches, leading to the name "Shaking Pox." This primary phase lasts 24-48 hours. The "reduction phase" begins as the fever breaks, marked by a terrifying and rapid loss of stature over 12-18 hours. The process is agonizing, accompanied by disorientation as the victim's perspective on the world shifts violently. Once complete, the victim is permanently locked at the 5% scale, unable to revert back to their original size.

   Post-reduction, Micros are biologically immune to further contraction of SAS-65 but become lifelong asymptomatic carriers. The virus remains dormant in their system, shed naturally into their immediate environment. This is the primary reason for the initial and ongoing terror directed at them by Macros.

4. #4The Great Diminishment

   The Great Diminishment was the single most catastrophic event in modern history, a global pandemic that erased the old world and forged a new one from its ashes. The event began in March 1965 with the emergence of Somatic Atrophy Syndrome (SAS) in Southeast Asia. Initially dismissed as a virulent flu, the virus's terrifying true nature: irreversible size reduction, was confirmed by summer. As governments floundered, the world descended into a state of suspended panic, with economies grinding to a halt and conspiracy theories eroding public trust, setting the stage for a global transformation unlike anything seen before.

   The pandemic reached its horrifying zenith in the first week of September 1965, a period known as "The Reduction." A global "viral bloom" triggered a synchronous reduction phase in millions of people. For 72 hours, chaos reigned as individuals randomly and rapidly shrank to 5% of their original size. Office workers vanished from their chairs to reappear as inch-tall figures on the floor, drivers lost control of their now-massive vehicles, and families were torn apart by the impossible event. This week of mass trauma irrevocably shattered the human psyche and birthed the two distinct castes: the Macros and the Micros.

   The immediate aftermath was defined by fear and segregation. Traumatized by the event, Macros reacted with primal revulsion, committing the first acts of violence against the newly created Micros out of panic. Governments, now composed almost entirely of Macros, enacted emergency policies, rounding up Micros and relocating them to designated "Resettlement Zones" under the guise of public safety. This was the beginning of the formal, systemic segregation that defines the modern era, forcibly separating the two populations and solidifying the Micros' status as "other."

   The global economy collapsed and was rebuilt with no consideration for Micros, effectively writing them out of the system and forcing them to create their own parallel societies based on scavenging and hidden economies. The development of the SAS vaccine in 1966 was a victory for Macros, but it codified the new world order by ensuring no more of their kind would ever "fall." The Great Diminishment was over, but its consequence: the permanent, hostile schism between Macros and Micros had only just begun, serving as the grim dividing line between the "Before Times" and the world that exists today.
