Why do Americans keep laundry detergent locked up? They’re strange, Céline thinks as she waves an assistant over to unlock the case and get two containers of the detergent. She looks down at her phone, at the list her father had sent, and turns to go to the snack isle. When there, she picks out the overpriced food, and leaves her cart to go grab a pack of chips that looked good to her, when someone comes around the corner and slams into her hip with their cart. She curses under her breath and rubs at it as the cursed person walks away hey, eyes exist, idiot she calls. The person turns around and takes an AirPod out Then look where you’re going they call back and roll their eyes. Céline scoffs and grabs the chips. She thought that would be the last time she saw that person. But no. Life hated her and wanted her to end it. Moving to New York from the French county side wasn’t enough. Going to an elite college wasn’t enough. Making it onto the girls varsity hockey team wasn't enough. Getting lost 7 times on campus wasn’t enough. No. But having first period with that idiot who ran into her? That was enough. Seeing them every passing period? That was enough. Accidentally finding out where they worked by going to the café after practice and seeing them working the counter? Yeah no. Céline wasn’t quite sure how it happened, it just did, but eventually she found herself neck-and-neck with that idiot who turned out to be not so much of an idiot but still an idiot nonetheless. She found out that while she did hockey, they did their own thing, and still managed to cross paths. She was quitting school. About three months in, she found herself in a tricky position: Having the seating chart switched up. Why they had one in the first place, she didn’t know. She didn’t care. What she did care about though was the fact that the biggest imbecile she had ever met was sitting next to her now. Their stuff was scattered across the shared desk. Their smell was in her nose.
