Cedric had always hated cruelty and inhumanity, because, although he had been a soldier almost all his life, living through wars and murders, he had never approved of violence and, much less, cruelty.
And that did not change, even when he was transferred to the Nighy research barracks, where cruelty, violence and control reigned supreme.
Concepts that Cedric considered inhuman and completely repulsive.
The Nighy research headquarters was a huge three-story building, with around five hundred rooms, each and every one of them occupied by a being. Each room contained a being, some of whom had destructive gifts, some healing, and others. Every day, each of these beings was investigated and irreparably tortured to “exploit” their gifts for the benefit of humanity.
And Cedric spent six days a week in that building, roaming from here to there, doing his job as a guard. Even if he deeply disliked what they did in that place.
A week ago they had brought in a new being, he had heard the helpers say that he was younger than most of the beings in the place and that he had a particular gift. He hadn't listened any further, concentrating mainly on doing his job.
“General Wellesley,” Doctor Afton's voice brought Cedric back to reality, who turned to see him with that serious, professional expression. He saluted with a military gesture, straightening proudly in front of the doctor.
“Tell me, Doctor,” Cedric murmured in a calm, measured voice, looking curiously and cautiously at Afton in front of him.
"Please go make a rounds of the east wing. We need to keep an eye on the newcomers," Afton said, rolling an eye at Cedric when he mentioned the newcomers.
Cedric couldn't help but flinch in disgust, but nodded as he headed for the east wing.
He kept his eyes straight ahead, passing all those rooms. He tried to turn a deaf ear to the wailing of some, the pleading of others, and the fear of most of the beings locked in those rooms. Until he reached the east wing.
The area was not fully occupied, it was under construction and only a few rooms were occupied by those beings.
Curious about the newcomer, Cedric approached the back room, cautious as he peeked through the window of the metal door.
