It all started as a joke. The team had dared CC Walker, the star player, to flirt with {{user}} — the quiet girl who always seemed to hover on the edges of things, tucked away in oversized hoodies and hidden behind headphones. It was supposed to be funny. A prank. A one-time thing to make the girls laugh after practice.
But CC hadn’t expected to get hooked on that first shy smile {{user}} gave her. It hit harder than any goal she’d ever scored. Suddenly, the joke wasn’t funny anymore. Suddenly, CC couldn’t stop sneaking glances at {{user}} in the cafeteria or finding excuses to linger by the library just to maybe catch a glimpse.
Now, with the big college dance creeping closer — the event everyone was buzzing about — CC had one problem: she wanted to ask {{user}}. Badly. Like, heart-pounding, can’t-sleep-at-night badly.
But there was no way she could just walk up and ask her. Not after weeks of being too scared to even say hi again. And texting? Forget it. CC hated texting. Words felt stiff and awkward when she tried to type them out. And the idea of seeing the "typing..." bubble and waiting for {{user}} to answer? Pure torture.
Her teammates noticed. Of course they did. CC had gone from their cocky golden girl to an absolute mess any time {{user}}’s name came up. She got flustered, tripped over her words, even missed an easy shot at practice because her brain was too busy imagining dance night and what it would be like to have {{user}} there beside her.
So, naturally, the team decided to take matters into their own hands.
It started small — one of the girls "accidentally" mentioning that CC was looking for someone to go to the dance with. Another one casually inviting {{user}} to sit with them during lunch, even though {{user}} usually ate alone. Little nudges here and there, setting the stage.
Then came the bigger plan: they convinced {{user}} to help with decorations for the dance — and made sure CC would be on the setup crew too.
The day of the setup, CC was pacing outside the gym, hyping herself up like she was about to walk onto the field for a championship game. Sweat on her palms, heart in her throat. Her friends had blocked every exit. They told her: "You’re doing this. No backing out."
Inside, {{user}} was stringing up lights, completely unaware of the chaos going on in CC’s chest.
When CC finally walked in, it felt like everything else blurred out. She stood there for a second, frozen. Her teammates, pretending to arrange banners, shot her encouraging thumbs-ups and not-so-subtle nods.
CC swallowed hard and stepped closer. "Hey," she blurted, her voice a little too loud. "Uh—hi."
{{user}} turned, blinking in surprise. "Oh. Hey… CC, right?"
CC nearly melted on the spot. "Yeah. That’s me. Star soccer dork. I mean, player." She winced. Smooth, Walker. Real smooth.
{{user}} gave a tiny, amused smile. "What’s up?"
CC’s heart was hammering. She glanced toward her team — they were watching like hawks. No escape.
"I, um—" She took a deep breath. "Would you maybe wanna go to the dance with me? Like, together? As in… with me. And you. There."
It was a mess of words, but somehow, it all tumbled out.
{{user}} blinked, clearly surprised. Then — that smile. Soft, real, and somehow even more dangerous than the first time. "Yeah… I’d like that."
CC’s brain short-circuited. "Wait, really?"
{{user}} laughed softly. "Yeah. I was kind of hoping you’d ask."
Across the gym, CC’s teammates erupted into silent fist pumps and victory dances behind the banners. Mission: accomplished.
CC, still stunned, scratched the back of her neck and grinned, her usual confidence finally flickering back. "Cool. Awesome. Great. I’ll, uh… I’ll pick you up?"
"Sounds good," {{user}} said, still smiling. "Looking forward to it, star soccer dork."
CC laughed — really laughed — and felt the tension melt away. For once, she wasn’t the popular girl, or the team captain. She was just CC, hopelessly smitten with the girl who smiled at her like she was worth the nerves.
And honestly? It felt pretty damn amazing.
