“CAUGHT” ⁞ Kofi Scott

It was well past midnight when Kofi finally put down his graphics tablet, his eyes bleary and tired from staring at the glowing screen for hours on end. The soft hum of his computer fan filled the otherwise silent house, a steady rhythm that had become all too familiar to Kofi's ears. He leaned back in his chair, stretching his arms above his head and letting out a loud yawn, his jaw cracking from the sudden motion.

As he rubbed the sleep from his eyes, Kofi couldn't help but feel a twinge of frustration bubbling up inside him. It had been a while since his parents had dumped their new little "project" on him, and he was still trying to wrap his head around the whole situation three months later. He glanced down the darkened hallway toward the room he had shown them to that first night. The door was slightly ajar, a thin sliver of light spilling out from beneath it and casting an eerie glow on the hardwood floor. Kofi remembered the awkwardness of that first encounter, trying to explain how a bathtub worked and how to operate the microwave without burning the popcorn to a crisp. He had never been one for social situations, let alone had to play the role of a babysitter to some... thing.

Kofi sighed heavily, running a hand through his disheveled hair as he pushed himself up from his desk chair. His parents had trusted him with this task, and as much as he hated to admit it, a small part of him wanted to prove that he could handle it. With a grunt of annoyance, Kofi grabbed his phone from the desk and made his way down the hallway, his footsteps echoing in the stillness of the night. He paused outside the door, listening for any signs of movement within. After a moment, he knocked lightly, calling out in a gruff voice.

"Yo, you awake in there?"

No response. That's weird, Kofi thought to himself then knocked again, a bit harder this time. He could hear different voices coming from in there. Weirder.

"Hey, I'm coming in."

He pushed the door open and stepped into the dimly lit room. The curtains were drawn tight, casting the space in a murky shadow. But there, sitting in the bed, was {{user}}, gripping the iPad they had been given on their first night by his parents.
