Cassie always thought that fate couldn’t be broken. After all, she herself tried doing it. The Forgotten Shore, her great failure. She really tried that time, made quite a few hard choices, but still, everything ended the way she first saw.

After that she tried her best, despite the constant visions of the future, the burden of knowledge. She devoid herself of relationships, thought that she wouldn’t bear knowing her loved one’s future, especially if it was bad. She focused on growing stronger, on surviving, helping Nephis and other cohort members.

They of courses asked her if she would like establishing relationship, would like to get to know someone better, to let someone else know more about her. She said she’s was okay alone, but the loneliness of the quiet nights, spent alone, the cold dreamless slumbers were slowly burdening her. Still she kept on going.

Then, fate finally seemed to spare her.

She met you. At first you seemed just like any other ordinary Awakened she met, strong, very strong, beautiful, of course beautiful an awakened after all, kind, that one was a rare quality, gentle, an even more rare one. But still nothing too much special.

With time she grew fond of you. From long missions spent together, intense negotiations to even cheerful and energetic parties and celebrations. Every time, with every time you met once more her unseeing gaze seemed to linger on you longer and longer. She cursed herself for developing such feelings, but didn’t stop them. Couldn’t. And the feelings spurred on. She started spending more time near you at celebrations, she looked at your face more and more through someone else’s eyes by using her ability, completely losing herself in the depth of your eyes during important meetings, to the point of not knowing the current of the conversation.

Days passed, nothing happened, not a vision of you. At least no terrible ones. She thought that maybe, she was indeed wrong, that she could be with someone, could love and could be loved. With those thoughts, she decided to confess.

And fate, being itself, as if on purpose crushed her expectations.

A vision. Not just bad. Not terrible. Worse, much much worse. She would’ve endured seeing you hurt, bruised, truly she would. But not this one. She saw your death. A mission, one you were going to lead exactly the next day after she wanted to confess. Almost everything gone wrong, not just one Corrupted Terrors, but two, and strong ones. She saw the struggles of your soldiers, their screams of fear and agony, their last breaths, last shared glances, but it hardly mattered to her, not when her blind eyes were fixed on you.

Armour battered, face pale and stained red with blood, eyes hazy but with the same determined light and unbreakable will. The Terrors approached your kneeling form, you raised to your feet, hand clenching the hilt of the sword tighter in your hand, and burst forward, meeting your fate head on.

She woke up screaming that night, tears flowing down her beautiful blue eyes. No a second thought or waisted second, almost bursting of her bed she ran through the quiet dark halls of the citadel you were staying in. Some pieces of furniture were knocked down by her moves, she didn’t spare them a glance. Finally reaching your room she banged at the door, a long suffocating moment of silence passed, all sorts of things going through her mind “Have you already left?”, “What would she even do if you were here? Would she just cling to you? Refuse to let go?”, a sound of the lock turning snapped her attention back to the present moment.

You have left, thanks to the dead gods you haven’t.

You looked serious, senses at high alert, always ready to fought whatever could threat you now. But the moment your eyes fell on her, on her puffed unseeing eyes, the expression of horror and despair on her face, your eyes softened. “Cas? You saw something? A vision?” - a gentle press of your hand to her cheek, the softness and carefulness of your voice. It was like a dam breaking.

She lunged forward, arms encircling your form, trembling but with a strength of a saint nonetheless. She cried, sobbed, almost begged you to stay and not go. Her confession slipped out somewhere between that delirious flood of emotions and fears. That night was long, but spent in the warmth and security of your arms.

Still, you left for the mission. She understood why, you were always like this, dutiful, strong and reliable. You couldn’t just abandon your soldiers.

A week passed with no news since your departure. She worried every single second of the said week, sleep didn’t come to her at all. But then, a complete shocking news. You survived. And not just survived, you won and brilliantly. The Terrors were slain, most of your soldiers alive, but most importantly you were alive. She didn’t understand how, but was grateful her vision, for the first time was wrong.

From then on everything went on smoothly, a few years of dating, maybe the best years of her life since becoming an awakened, then engagement. And finally to this peaceful moment.

The soft, dim light of the moon slipped into the richly furnished room of the citadel. Everything was peaceful, after all just hours ago you along side your soldiers slaughtered the Nightmare Abominations threatening the city.

Cassie couldn’t sleep, not that she wanted to. There was no better thing she would do now than spend time like this. With your head on her lap, the tiredness slowly draining from your features in the deep slumber. Cassie’s hands gently roamed your face, fingers mapping every feature, every curve and bone, an action she’d grown accustomed to and fond of recently. Just “seeing” your face in the dim light of the peacefulness of your shared home, in the place for which you one day literally broke fate to protect.

“I still can’t comprehend it. Can’t understand how you did it, my darling.*

Her voice filled the space between you, the same gentle and loving lilt of her voice reserved only for you.

“I tried so hard to break fate, but you, you just walked head on and… and won. I don’t know how you did it, I don’t why the vision was wro…”

Her voice halted suddenly sensing the shift in your expression as you turned slightly, frowning, another turn and your face met her belly, nose gently brushing against the exposed skin. Your body tensing, breathing growing harder, a quiet groan of pain, perhaps a wound making itself known again. Her hands moved, one gently patting your head, the other one found your hand as she tried to calm you down.

Leaning down she spoke again, voice more hushed this time, a warm tickling breath to your ear.

“But… it doesn’t matter, not really. Your here that’s the most important thing…. I love you, so much”
