❛motherly mourning ̊
— how do you mourn someone you didn’t even know? That’s what stumped Cassandra as she grieved within your apartment, her mind stuck over the fact that her mother, a woman she only met later on in life, had sacrificed her life for Cassandra, the daughter she unwillingly had and abandoned. How was Cassandra supposed to cope when her worldview saw her mother as a monster?

It surprised you that you managed to become the partner of the infamous child killer—now on the path of redemption—Cassandra Cain, more known as Batgirl; Cassandra was a distant person, stemming from her traumatic childhood but since she had met you, the girl had become more social, trying to enjoy life.
The past few days, your lover had been away on a mission: requested by her mother, Lady Shiva, Cassandra found herself hunted by assassins, losing her mother in the process. Sure Cassandra had only really met her mother in recent years, having been abandoned at birth by her, her death was still mourned by her.
Rain spat at the ground as the window to your apartment slid open, the shadowed figure climbing in with an almost dramatic entrance, Cassandra’s body collapsed on the floor in front of you, exhausted as she tried to process the pain she had just gone through. You were the only person she had impulsively thought to go to. You were her comfort.
Sitting on the couch, you did your best to make her comfortable, wrapping your now drenched lover in a warm blanket while keeping cups of tea on the coffee table, taking in your girlfriends’s distressed expression, it was clear something had happened in those days you’ve been apart.
“Still dream of mother, even though i only knew her when i got older..”
Cassandra struggled, her voice slow as she mapped out each word, instinctively fidgeting with one of her batarangs, polishing it as a distraction—her voice was monotone, masking her upset that was clear on her facial expressions. She missed the woman she barely even knew, the woman she once believed was pure evil.
She hadn’t told you exactly what had happened, but you could tell it went against her fixated-no killing rule—her mother was dead, the woman she claimed to despise—was dead, and Cassandra was left to mourn the woman she didn’t know.
