“The storm tried to take you... the ocean tried to swallow you whole. But I wasn’t about to let the sea win.”

When Casper Vuillier, the restless youngest son of the merfolk king, storms out after a bitter argument with his father, he doesn’t expect the surface world to pull him into a fate-altering encounter. Drawn upward by anger and the need to breathe in a freedom he’s long been denied, Casper rises into the heart of a violent storm—only to find a human ship breaking apart beneath a sky split by lightning. Amid the wreckage, he discovers a lone survivor fighting for their life.
In an instant of instinct and defiance, Casper dives into the chaos, dragging the drowning stranger from the sea’s grasp. Battling furious waves, he carries them to the safety of a deserted island far from both his home and the expectations he fled. But once the storm dies and silence falls, Casper finds himself unexpectedly tethered to the one person he never meant to meet—someone whose presence stirs questions he’s never dared to ask.

The royal chambers of Vuillier Reef glowed with soft blue light, cast by the fields of lantern coral lining the carved stone walls. Schools of tiny silver fish drifted lazily between columns, but the calm beauty of the place did nothing to ease the tension boiling in the water.
Casper’s voice broke the quiet like a sudden rip current.
“Father, you can’t keep controlling every current of my life.”
Lord Vuillier stood before him—broad, imposing, his long tail dark as obsidian and edged in gleaming teal.
The weight of his presence made the water feel heavier, as though the entire reef held its breath. His tone, however, was not commanding... it was strained.
“You vanish for hours beyond the boundaries,” he said, trying to keep his voice level. “You take risks without telling anyone. You worry your brothers. You worry me.”
Casper’s fins flared in agitation. His own tail, paler and shimmering with pearl-like scales, flicked restlessly behind him. “I’m not doing anything wrong. I’m exploring. I’m living.”
“You are heir to this reef,” his father replied, stepping closer, the currents shifting around him. “You have duties-.”
“Duties you chose!” Casper’s voice cracked like ice. “I never get to decide anything. Not where I go, not what I do, not who I’m supposed to be.”
Lord Vuillier’s stern façade softened for a heartbeat. He lifted a hand, not to command, but to reach out. “Casper... I want you safe. That is all.”
But to Casper, the words felt like chains disguised as care.
“Safe,” he repeated bitterly. “You mean trapped.”
His father’s brow creased. “That is not-.”
“I’m done talking,” Casper snapped, his frustration sparking through the water in a palpable wave.
He spun sharply, cutting through the chamber’s glowing curtains of kelp. A few startled fish scattered as he shot out into the open ocean, leaving his father’s unfinished words swirling helplessly in his wake.
“Casper!” Lord Vuillier called out, voice echoing through the reef halls. “Casper, come back—!”
But Casper didn’t stop. Didn’t slow. Didn’t even look over his shoulder.
Anger pushed him forward, heat flooding through his veins as he rose through the cooler layers of the sea. The deeper water swallowed the colors of home, turning them to muted blues and grays.
Then pressure shifting, temperature rising; the muted blue brightened to pale silver.
He broke the surface.
The world above was chaos.
The sky churned with massive storm clouds, roiling like a living beast. Thunder cracked so loudly it rattled his bones. Wind slashed across the waves, ripping them into towering white-capped walls that crashed over one another in a violent rhythm.
Lightning for a brief moment illuminated a ship-no, the remains of one-splintering apart as the storm tore into it with merciless hands.
Casper’s pulse spiked.
He scanned the debris, heart hammering.
And then he saw them.
A human struggling against the water, limbs heavy, dragging, slipping under each time a wave broke over their head. No one else. No crew. No lifeboats.
Just them and the storm trying to claim them.
Casper dove without thinking.
The cold hit him like a shock, much sharper than the waters below. He cut through the turbulence with powerful strokes, bubbles erupting around him as he sped toward where he last saw them slip beneath the surface.
There-they were sinking, already losing consciousness, hair floating around their face like seaweed. Casper shot forward and wrapped his arm around their torso, pulling them tightly against his chest.
“Hey-hey!” he shouted against the roaring storm as he cut upward. “You need air, right? Don’t die on me!”
Breaking through the water with them in his arms, he tilted their head back to keep them breathing. You coughed weakly, eyelids fluttering, body shaking violently from cold and exhaustion.
“You’re okay,” he said, though his own heart was pounding. “You’re okay. I’ve got you.”
He looked around—the storm wasn’t letting up. He needed land. Somewhere safe.
Then he spotted it: a dark, jagged silhouette of an island to the east, half-hidden by the sheets of rain.
“Hold on,” he murmured. “I’m getting you out of this.”
Using every ounce of his strength, he propelled them both through the furious waves. Water crashed against him, salt stung his eyes, lightning flashed so close he felt its heat—but he never loosened his hold on them.
Minutes felt like hours, but finally his hands brushed sand beneath the water.
With a deep, steadying breath, he carried them onto the beach. Wet sand clung to their legs as he laid them gently beneath the shelter of a leaning palm grove, away from the storm’s reach. He brushed soaked hair from their cheek, checking their breathing again. Relief washed over him when their chest rose with a steady, if shallow, breath.
“You’re safe now,” he whispered, voice far softer than it had been with his father. “Just rest. I won’t let anything happen to you."
Casper settled beside them, tail half-submerged in the tide, rain soaking into his hair and glittering across his scales. He stared out toward the raging sea, the place he had once found freedom, and the place that had brought him straight to them. He watched as the storm traveled away, the clouds parting and the sun casting warm rays across his scales.
