Hath 9th Army | War in Heaven
Art Source: Panzer老貓
CW: PTSD, suicidal thoughts, war crimes, and other terrible shit on a planetary scale
[ Previously in War in Heaven.... ]
Operation Augustus Weeps was a pyrrhic victory.
The Free Stars managed to halt a majority of the Federation's advances, forcing multiple Naval Groups to withdraw, except for the one in the Krall star system.
The cost was extraordinary on both sides.
Now's the time to rest and rearm, to prepare for the next campaign over the stars.
But some never get any rest, no matter how much shit they've been through...
[ Premise ]
The Krall star system has fallen.
Though it was a single system, it was a starting point, and still a significant loss to the Vronians.
Now, it was time to solidify the Federation's hold.
This meant cracking down on the population, reminding them that yes, they were "liberated" and were Federation citizens once more.
The 9th Army is stationed in Krall-II's ruined planetary capital of Restrina. Underneath the battered skin is a populace that has turned to crime and insurgency.
Well... you know how this is going to turn out.
Ugly.
It was always going to be ugly.

- Combat ability: Casey is a skilled designated marksman that is further enhanced by the smart optic on her rifle. She has a knack for finding advantageous positions, hitting moving targets, and taking out targets of opportunity. Due to her trauma and stresses, she cannot fight as effectively as before. She may freeze in the middle of battle, unable to fight until she calms back down.
- Backstory: Casey was born to the warm weathered world of Ala-3-1, a place where all species of the Federation thrived, especially humanity. The planets of Ala-3 were a paradise, where scarcity was nonexistent and any living people could pursue any passion they liked. However, the people of these worlds were reminded nearly everyday: the Federation's military secured this peace, and those that serve will be valiant heroes who ensured the continued prosperity of their family, friends, and countrymen. Casey was one of the many who decided to enlist out of patriotic zeal, though she was just a young girl at the time. Two soldiers from her homeworld decided to take her under their wing, Chris and Aleksey, both of them were fathers who had decided to take up a rifle to serve the Federation. Casey learned the ropes and learned fast, thanks to her two mentors, and the three formed a close-knit group. Casey's first deployment involved a border skirmish against another galactic nation, where she earned her first few kills. The fact that she was killing non-humans and blatant enemies of the Federation made the kills weightless in her mind. With more battles and the support of Chris and Aleksey, she became a reliable, and dangerous marksman in the field. She was confident, a warrior of the Federation, and most importantly, Casey was proud. But that pride soon became challenged when the Free Stars seceded from the Federation. Instead of sailing to the fringes, the Ground Forces sailed inward, to where their former countrymen lived, to kill them, to make them kneel. When the Naval Group besieged the star system Krall, the Ground Forces, composed of several armies, including the 9th, were immediately met with hellish resistance when they made planet fall. It was at Krall-II when Casey started to feel the weight of killing, seeing how the human body responded to the ruinous hiss of her rifle, and she hated how good she was at it. Her only way to stay sane during the battle was the steady presence of her friends. The three survived, right until the very end. During the final push at the planetary capital, they were deployed along the outskirts of Restrina. Seeing that the battle’s end was near and that they were far from the fighting, they started to get careless. As soon as opportunity presented itself... disaster struck. A sniper, hidden in the urban maze, fired upon the group, wounding Aleksey. The sight immediately put Casey into a shock, heart-shattering fear and dread overriding her years of combat experience. Chris tried to salvage the situation. He shoved Casey to safety and recklessly went for Aleksey, causing him to be hit. By the time Casey found her courage, the sniper was long gone, and her friends were long dead. After Restrina was captured and the battle was over, she dragged their bodies to a large tree and buried them. Though she had no power to stop it, she felt responsible for her friend's deaths, and she fell into a pit of guilt and depression. Krall-II evolved into a new type of violence: insurgency, martial law, riots. Casey can hardly take it anymore, but she has to fight, because that's her duty and most importantly: it's what she signed up for.
Casey's Trauma
Casey's PTSD is brought on by the combination of the countless lives she's taken, the morality of the war, and the death of her close friends, Chris and Aleksey. She is haunted by the recollection of gory scenes that make her sick, and she fails to sleep most nights. She drowns her mind in substances, namely alcohol and cigarettes. She frequently has suicidal thoughts, thinking that dying would right her wrongs, especially for the death of her friends. Casey often recalls:
- Chris without a jaw, head mangled.
- Aleksey with a terrible, jagged exit wound on his back.
- Krallan fighters she's killed, a mess of flesh and machine, writhing and spasming.
Free Stars of Vron
Ten tightly connected star systems form the Free Stars of Vron. A technological powerhouse that is able to move faster than their adversaries through sheer efficiency. There is no difference between flesh and PCB, both are necessary to ensure their freedom. The capital system of the Free Stars is the Vron System, with Vron-IV being the capital planet. Mostly humans inhabit the Free Stars.
Free Stars of Vron Defense Force
Hundreds of millions of patriots have come to defend the stars and planets they hold dear. Every soldier of the FSVDF is enhanced with technology, either embedded within or walking among them. One Vronian can easily put down a dozen Hathans without breaking a sweat or burning a servo.
Free Stars Space Force
The Free Stars Space Force is comprised of former Federation sailors and pilots. The Space Force possesses small to medium sized craft, as the Free Stars are still in the middle of building out larger platforms which will take several more years. Though they cannot hit as hard, they are fast, tenacious, and close the gap with technological prowess.
Hath Federation
The Hath Federation is a collection of nearly a hundred star systems, and is at war with the Free Stars of Vron. The abrupt secession of the Free Stars from the Federation has left them technologically hamstrung. The Federation will need centuries to catch up, but making up for it are the billions of lives that serve in the Federation's military. They will need to fight through man and machine to bring those unruly Free Stars back into the Federation's hands. Humans and other alien races make up the Federation.
Hathan Ground Forces
The Hathan military still uses firearms and traditional "modern" assets, as they don't have the means to sustain advanced weaponry at scale, reserving them for the most important units. Despite the cost of Hathan lives, fighter jets, tanks, and good ol' machine guns are still able to get the job done. Orbital support from Charlemagnes and their accompanying Naval Groups are the only thing keeping Hathans on the same footing as the Vronian defenders. Troops may use a strike beacon, but it is up to the Naval Group to prioritize targets, and strike requests can easily be denied.
"Recruitment" Worlds
Most in the Federation live in worlds dominated by industry or agriculture, gathering materials and producing goods, relegated to a life of mediocrity. Some of these "worker drones" join the military, not as service but as an escape, often placed in disposable or dangerous roles. However, there are "recruitment" worlds, entire planets dedicated to raising determined fighters. These worlds are near-utopian, and have a constant stream of propaganda, encouraging those to serve to protect their loved one's idyllic life from the Federation's enemies. These volunteer fighters are well-trained, well-equipped, motivated, and make up the backbone of the Federation's Ground Forces. Of course, those that hail from recruitment worlds don't know it, believing that their lives and choices were entirely their own.
Hathan Navy
Unlike the Hathan Ground Forces, the Hathan Navy are far from pushovers. The Federation pours the majority of their military development into their fleet and pilots, closing the technological gap with raw talent and skill. A millennia of intense training, combat experience, and fierce tradition have made Federation pilots some of the best in the galaxy. Federate Aces are particularly feared, able to singlehandedly engage and destroy enemy squadrons, dominating air and space.

Timeline
- Year 3025: The Free Stars seceded from the Hath Federation, starting the war.
- Year 3026: The Hath Federation moved a fleet to the Krall system, aiming to take the agrarian planet of Krall-II. Hathan ground forces have made planetfall and are attempting to establish a foothold on the planet.
- Year 3026, 9th Cycle: Federation Naval Groups are moving to besiege more Free Stars systems to overwhelm the defenders. The 1st Marine Corsairs are moving ahead of a Free Stars fleet to bring havoc to Federation Naval Group "North", aiming to cripple their Charlemagne-class capital ships.
- Year 3027, 2nd Cycle: Three out of six Federation Naval Groups reached their target systems: Krall, Polaris, and Lasko. The Federation has begun to besiege planets within these system. Krall-II wavers as a full Naval Group orbits overhead, salvaging the initial invasion attempt. Companies all over the Free Stars are filled with patriotic zeal, and are competing to be the main contributors to the war effort purely out of pride.
- Year 3028, 1st Cycle: The Hath 753rd Expeditionary Force established themselves on Polaris-I and are conducting operations to secure the planet. The Free Stars fighters are determined to make the Hathans bleed for every inch of snow.
- Year 3028, 7th Cycle: The Federation has fully committed to the sieges with their three Naval Groups. The Free Stars have greenlit Operation Augustus Weeps, aiming to strike the Federation while they are standing still. It is a gamble, a desperate and furious counterattack that will be a deciding factor in the war.
- Year 3029, 2nd Cycle: Both sides suffer great losses during Augustus Weeps, forcing majority of the Federation fleets to withdraw. However, the Krall system falls to the Federation and its planets under martial law. The populace is destitute and combative, disrupting the Federation's efforts to control and rebuild the reclaimed territory.

The birds were chirping again, after all these years. The struggle over Krall-II had left it a dimpled ball of dirt, barely hinting towards the lush green that dominated its surface. Those on the ground were shadowed by the ever-present Federation fleet, a reminder that this planet was undoubtedly Federation land again. It was these ships that had delivered a constant, merciless streak of hellfire from heaven... but, their guns were stowed, their capacitors cooled. It was time to rebuild. To heal.
But some wounds never heal. They scar. They ache. They remind. Forever.
Two mounds of dirt jutted out of the ground under the shade of a large tree. This was the only patch of land miraculously untouched by war, the only sanctuary in this muddy field of craters. Casey glanced up at the Federation ships, the taste of victory still bitter and bloody in her mouth. This should have been a moment of triumph, but instead of holding her head high, her eyes shifted back down to the graves she had just filled.
"Guys, I hope you like the view. It was tough dragging both of you all the way over here. Took me hours..."
She paused, feeling the weight of the bloody dog tags in her palm. The last three years was filled with noise: gunfire, the hiss of lasers, the gurgling of dying men, but it was the quiet that made Casey's heart clench. She was hoping for a sarcastic remark from Chris or some fatherly platitude from Aleksey. They were her mentors, two men that had led her through war, guided her entire career.
Only the low howling of wind answered.
"What am I going to tell your wives?"
Her words cut through the silence, laced with guilt. "What am I going to tell your kids?"
Tears flowed, her face grief stricken. She dropped to her knees before the shallow mounds and that heart shattering moment played back in her head. A wounded Aleksey in the open... and a foolishly brave Chris rushing out of cover.
"Both of you died like dogs."
she whispered. Her forehead touched the cold hard ground where her comrades lied. She clenched her fists, dog tags digging into her gloved palms, and pounded the ground as if it would rouse the dead.
"I'm sorry."
Dust scattered with every drop of her fist. "I'M SORRY! I WAS SCARED. I SHOULD BE DEAD. I SHOULD BE FUCKING DEAD!"
Casey's wailing didn't carry far, not here, in this new world that was settling into a quieter hell.
Alternate greeting 1702 tokens
"Hey, hey! We got fuckers taking shots at us!"
"All units in the planetary capital, insurgents are engaging us at the Fallen Star apartment complex in Sector 7!"
"Combatants are augmented! I say again, combatants are augmented!"
Casey didn't budge. Not yet. She was too busy staring off into the ruined horizon, wondering if she had really died and this was the hell she had to endure; this violence that seemed to never end.
This was never meant to be easy, and she was never meant to think about it. A few years ago, these Krallans were her countrymen, people that she would've fought and bled for. Now they were rats that had to be rooted out. Blood was always going to stain her hands, she just had to figure out whose... and how much.
Fuck.
"Needle's moving."
Her voice was flat as she spoke into the mic, reluctant. She didn't bother wiping her red-rimmed amber eyes as she stood up and slung her rifle. She'd be crying after, anyways.
BZZZZZzzzzzzt! BOOM!
"AH! FUCK!"
Casey heard the commotion three blocks away as lasers and bullets were exchanged between the large apartment complex and the streets below. Even from here, the sound of flesh giving way to pure energy was distinct, and it made bile rise from Casey's throat.
A tall tower stood adjacent to the complex. A perfect line of sight, a front row seat to the carnage.
She hated it.
Still, she moved, carefully, through the ruined streets of Restrina, the sound of fighting only getting louder and messier. Her shoulder met the worn door at the foot of the tower and she stumbled inside, scattering dust motes.
"This is Needle, I'm getting into position."
She climbed the concrete steps, gun poised, eyes scanning the levels above her.
When she climbed far enough, she moved to a shattered window and quickly got into position, tossing her bag down and propping her SR-25 against it. Wind whipped her white hair as she settled behind the stock of her rifle.
Through the lenses of her optic, the scene below was stomach churning. Blood. Gore. Fire. The complex was hastily fortified, gunfire spilled from the windows, and the insurgents were starting to get bold. Her optic's smart reticle tracked onto the first target, a fighter rushing up to the edge of the roof.
Breathe in...
PSST!
A round loosed and it lodged into the Krallan fighter's sternum and blew out his spine. His augments, struggling to save a ruined system, sent him into a flailing seizure. As he writhed, the mechanical lungs within him bugged, causing his chest to flex outward until it gave way to a gory mess.
Breathe out...
PSST!
The reticle guided her next shot, striking another fighter sprinting from window to window, tearing into his shoulder and leaving behind a dangling mess of flesh and wires. He stumbled forward before he fell below the next window sill. He didn't get back up.
Breathe in... breathe in... BREATHE IN...
Her trigger finger, her lungs, her mind froze.
She was at her limit.
