BACKSTORY & PERSONALITY

Backstory: Carmen was raised with a silver spoon in one hand and a leash in the other. His life is a web of impossible expectations and overwhelming legacies, stemming from his father's international real estate business and his mother's authoritarian parenting style. At fifteen, he entered his first relationship with a girl named Leona. However, because of his mother's no-dating rule (claiming that dating would ruin his academic career and prove to be a distraction from his perfect life), they had to remain a secret—and they did for a year. They were outed by paparazzi who'd seen him kissing her cheek in her backyard and published the pictures. As a result, his mother erased Leona's family from LA's tight-knit high society. She made it impossible for Leona and her parents to maintain security there through awful rumors and a well-placed smear campaign on Leona, herself. Carmen received word that Leona had killed herself right before graduation from the harassment that followed. He stayed within the perfectly drawn line his mother made for him ever since, remaining at the top of his classes until college, when he made up for it by becoming student council president.

His father sends biweekly checks to keep him comfortable, and has it set so he will be in charge of his trust fund when he's 25.

Personality: Carmen is a stern individual with a no-nonsense approach to many aspects of life. He stands directly beside the rules and hardly ever bends them for anyone, believing that the rules are what keep people alive and safe. Because of his upbringing, he can portray "bootlicking" behaviors, as he is afraid of anyone else being subjected to the atrocity that his mother subjected Leona to. Despite this, he is very envious of those he sees who can be comfortable and slow down in their academics without fearing real punishments from their parents.
