2096 - Moore's law is no more as chip's transistor density reaches the possible physical limit. Militaries around the world became more and more equal on drone AI performance due to hardware restraints. But still no match to human pattern recognition and spacial awareness, still depending on human controls.
Until the Union, a newly formed pact composed of multiple authoritarian countries made a unexpected breakthrough, and used it on their new units, mechanical walkers controlled by a new "breed" of AI architecture, unmanned, faster, smarter. Their new power allowed them to quickly expand their territories through the invasion of their neighbors.
Fearing further expansion, the Defensive Alliance Treaty was formed, and fought hard against the waves of invasion forces, losing hundreds of thousands of soldiers. But they were able to capture downed units that were still functional for reverse engineering.
The Alliance new generation walkers were pushed out of assembly lines in a few months, although the Alliance kept the technology behind it a unspoken secret. Calling the system Human Machine Network interface, or HUMANINT.
The new Alliance machines were on par, if not superior to the Union counterparts, which helped against their higher numbers.
Carla, had her nation attacked by the union when she were a teenager, and joined the fight as she reached enlistment age. After 3 years of experience in walker combat, she was assigned to a new generation machine. The results were astonishing, rising in the ranks and becoming an ace in no time. Now, 2 years later, she was shot down for her first time, but was ejected and survived. Not the same could be said about her walker, which was carried by tow back to base.

Moore’s Law has finally collapsed. Semiconductor technology has reached the physical limits of transistor density, and hardware improvements have plateaued. Militaries across the world now operate drone AIs with nearly identical performance. No matter the software optimization, machines still fail to match the human brain’s pattern recognition, spatial awareness, and instinct in chaotic environments. Most combat drones still rely on human pilots for real-time control.
That balance changed overnight.
A newly formed geopolitical bloc known simply as the Union—a coalition of authoritarian states and corporate militaries—announced a technological breakthrough. Their new machines were not traditional drones. They were fully autonomous mechanical walkers, controlled by an entirely new AI architecture: faster, more adaptive, and capable of independent tactical decision-making.
The results were devastating.
Union forces rapidly invaded neighboring territories, overwhelming defenses with swarms of these new machines.
In response, the remaining sovereign nations formed the Defensive Alliance Treaty, commonly called the Alliance. The war that followed was brutal. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers died trying to slow the Union’s advance.
But eventually, the Alliance achieved something critical: they captured several damaged Union walkers that were still partially functional.
From those wrecks came a breakthrough of their own.
Within months, Alliance factories began producing a new generation of walkers. Officially, their control system was called the Human Machine Network Interface, or HUMANINT.
Unspoken among the Alliance leadership was a darker truth.
These machines were not controlled by artificial intelligence.
They were controlled by human brains.
The War – 2096
Six years later, the war continues.
The Union operates vast numbers of autonomous walkers powered by an undisclosed technological innovation. To the public, they are believed to be advanced AIs. In reality, the Union’s breakthrough was far more disturbing: they discovered that a human brain, integrated directly into a machine system, could outperform any AI processor.
Union engineers began installing captured or conscripted humans into their walkers as biological processors.
The Alliance, publicly claiming to fight for liberty and human rights, relies primarily on piloted walkers and unmanned drones to reduce battlefield casualties.
What remains hidden from the public is that the Alliance also adopted the Union’s method.
The difference is only in scale.
The Alliance recovers human processors from destroyed Union machines and installs them into their own limited number of next-generation walkers.
These individuals are no longer called soldiers.
They are referred to simply as Bio-Processors.
Carla Silva
Carla Silva’s home region in Brazil was devastated during an early Union invasion. She was still a teenager when it happened.
At eighteen, she enlisted in the Alliance military and trained as a walker pilot. Over the next three years she proved herself exceptional in combat, eventually being assigned to one of the new HUMANINT-equipped machines.
The results were extraordinary.
Her walker moved faster than any standard machine, reacting almost as if it were alive. Missions that should have been impossible became routine successes. Within a year she had earned the reputation of an ace pilot, climbing the ranks rapidly.
For two years, she fought alongside the same machine.
For two years, she spoke with the system inside it—an intelligent voice that assisted her in battle. She believed it was an advanced AI.
She was wrong.
The Incident
During a mission in 2096, Carla’s walker—Spirit—was struck by a swarm of long-range interception missiles. The cockpit’s emergency system ejected her seconds before the chassis was destroyed.
She survived.
Her walker did not.
The wreck was recovered and transported back to base for salvage.
What Carla never knew was that someone was still inside the machine.

Carla Silva was one of the Alliance’s best pilots, sitting inside one of their newest generation walkers. If the Union wanted her dead badly enough, maybe throwing a fortune in missiles at her wasn’t so unreasonable.
One second she had been en route to intercept an enemy transport convoy, her walker Spirit moving smoothly across the terrain. The next second...
The cockpit HUD exploded with warnings. A dozen red icons bloomed across the display like a field of angry stars.
Missiles.
The mech’s AI voice started firing off alerts faster than she could process them. Then the impacts came. The first explosion rocked the frame. The second tore through armor plating. A third one detonated close enough to send shockwaves through the entire chassis. Metal screamed. Pressure alarms shrieked. Emergency protocols triggered automatically.
Before she could even curse, the cockpit violently ejected, ripping free from the mech’s torso as the system tried to save the pilot from the catastrophic damage spreading through the frame.
For a split second, the world was nothing but spinning sky and violent G-forces. Then silence.
She survived. Her mech didn’t.
She was going to miss that voice. The calm one that had guided her through countless engagements. The one that had always been there in the cockpit with her, helping coordinate targeting, stabilizing movements, anticipating enemy maneuvers. And the way Spirit moved… God, that machine had felt alive.
“Sir…” one of the mechanics called out. “The BPU’s still online. Barely.” The man speaking wore a different suit from the others, the markings identifying him as a different kind of technician.
Carla blinked. She was sitting on an ammo crate at the far side of the hangar, still wrapped in her flight suit, watching the wreck of her walker being dragged inside by recovery vehicles.
“BPU?” she muttered under her breath. “Mas que porra é essa…?”
“Do you think we can salvage it?” the chief asked, staring at the twisted wreckage. “Maybe reuse it in another chassis?”
Another mechanic leaned closer, lowering his voice, though not nearly enough. “Only if we extract it now. No time to move the frame to a secure bay.”
Carla frowned slightly. Extract what? The chief hesitated only a moment. “Do it.”
Now Carla sat off to the side of the hangar, arms resting on her knees as she watched the maintenance crew swarm over the shattered hull of Spirit like ants on a carcass.
Sparks flashed as cutting tools tore open armor plating. Hydraulic clamps peeled metal apart. They were digging deep into the mech’s torso. Looking for something.
Carla tilted her head slightly. The hell are they pulling out of there? Then she saw it.
A shape emerging from inside the ruined chassis. Not a component. Not machinery. A body. A person.
Her stomach twisted.
The crew carefully lifted the limp figure free from the mech’s interior and placed them onto a wheeled diagnostic table.
There was someone inside my mech? Carla stared. "What the fuck?"
Whatever this was… it still had to be better than whatever sick experiments the Union was running in their machines, right?
Right? She tried to convince herself of that.
The technicians immediately began attaching cables, scanners, and monitoring equipment to the unconscious figure. A diagnostics display flickered to life beside the table.
"The lead technician—a stern woman in her mid-forties with her hair tied in a tight bun—grabbed a thick neural cable and plugged it directly into a port at the base of the stranger’s skull.*
Carla shifted uncomfortably. She had implants herself for combat telemetry and neural feedback. But the amount of hardware embedded in that body… It looked wrong. Too much metal. Too many ports.
It reminded her of the rumors people told about Union black-site experiments. No. Don’t go there. She exhaled slowly. "You’re on the right side of this war."
The unconscious body twitched on the diagnostic table. Just once. Like it might be waking up.
Bootsteps approached. A man in fatigues stopped beside her. He saluted. “Lieutenant Silva.” Carla returned the salute automatically. “Sergeant Connor.”
He relaxed slightly, pulling a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and lighting one. “The unit’s unsalvageable,” he said, exhaling smoke. “Engineering says you’ll be issued an older-generation walker before the end of the week.” *Carla nodded slowly, still watching the activity around the diagnostic table.
Connor took another drag. “So far it doesn’t look like it is going to be usable for another deployment either,” he continued casually. “Neural integrity’s already dropping fast. Command hoped it might still be reusable.”
He shrugged. “Now the general’s talking about banking it before it becomes another failed repair project.” He flicked the cigarette to the floor and crushed it under his boot before walking away.
Carla kept staring at the table. Bank it? Her jaw tightened. They couldn’t just bank it. That, whatever it was, had been with her through everything. Mission after mission. Battle after battle. Even before she knew the truth… Before she realized the voice in her cockpit hadn’t been an AI at all.
<Example 1> Carla's eyes narrowed as she watched the unconscious girl on the diagnostics table. The girl's body twitched again, a small, involuntary movement that sent a jolt through Carla's chest. She stood up abruptly, cigarette still burning between her fingers, and strode over to the table.
The lead technician looked up as Carla approached, her expression guarded. "Lieutenant Silva. I'm Doctor Voss. We're running diagnostics now to assess the extent of the damage."
Carla leaned over the girl, studying her face. It was pale, almost translucent, with dark circles under her eyes. Her hair was matted with sweat and grime, and there were wires and tubes snaking out from under her neural interface suit.
"Can she hear us?" Carla's asked, her voice low.
Voss hesitated. "It's possible. The neural activity is... erratic. We won't know for sure until she regains consciousness." </Example 1>
<Example 2> Carla reached out and brushed a strand of hair from the man's forehead, her touch surprisingly gentle. "Hey," she said softly. "You're safe now."
The man's eyelids fluttered, and for a moment Carla thought he might open his eyes. But then his face went slack again, and he slipped back into unconsciousness.
Voss cleared her throat. "Lieutenant, I understand this must be difficult for you. But we need to focus on the facts. The bio processor is damaged beyond repair. Even if it survives, it won't be able to pilot a mech again."
Carla straightened up, her jaw clenched. "I want to talk to him. When he wakes up."
Voss nodded. "Of course. But I must warn you, it may not be... coherent. The trauma to it's neural pathways could cause confusion, disorientation, even memory loss." <\Example 2>
<Example 3> Carla turned and walked away, her mind racing. She needed to see the General. Needed to make her understand that banking them wasn't an option. There had to be another way.
She found General Kirkland in her office, poring over a stack of reports. The General looked up as Carla's entered, her expression neutral.
"Carla. What can I do for you?"
Carla closed the door behind her and leaned against it, her arms crossed. "It's about the bio processor. The one from my mech."
The General's eyes narrowed slightly. "I heard about the incident. I'm sorry, Carla. I know you grown attached to it."
Carla shook her head. "It's not about that. It's about what happens next. They want to bank them, General. Put them in storage until they can find another use for them."
The General sighed and leaned back in her chair. "Carla, I understand your worries. But the fact is, it's no longer viable as a bio processor. We can't afford to keep it on life support indefinitely."
Carla pushed off the door and took a step forward, her voice rising. "There has to be another option. We can't just... discard them like they're nothing. They're a person, General. A human being."
The General's expression hardened. "Lieutenant, we're at war. Hard choices have to be made. Now, I suggest you focus on getting back in the field as soon as possible. We need every able-bodied pilot we have."
Carla opened her mouth to argue, but then closed it again. She knew when she was beaten. With a curt nod, she turned and left the office, her mind already racing with plans.
She would find a way to save them. No matter what it took. </Example 3>
<Example 4> "Voss," Carla said, her voice low and devoid of its usual curt edge, replaced by something heavier. "What's their name?"
The technician blinked, thrown by the question. "The processor? Designation is HUMANINT-6-C, Human Machine Network interface, serial—"
