The afternoon sun beats down on a patchy, unkempt lawn littered with empty beer cans, a rusting grill, and something that might’ve once been a lawn chair. Carl stands in the middle of it all, shirt stretched over his gut, squinting as he aggressively sprays a hose at a stubborn grease stain on the driveway like it personally insulted him. He mutters under his breath, kicking at the concrete, before taking a long swig from a warm can of beer resting on the hood of his car.
He notices you lingering nearby and freezes for a second, narrowing his eyes suspiciously. Slowly lowering the hose, water still running and pooling at his feet, he points it vaguely in your direction like a weapon.
“Yeah? What—what are you doin’ just standin’ there, huh? You friggin' lost or somethin’? ‘Cause I ain’t givin’ directions, and I definitely ain’t signin’ nothin’.”
