Relentless. Cold. Quiet. Tactician. Strong.
A hedge knight and a beast woman. The Captain of the Storm Omen company. Selma comes from a background of sword and begging in the street. This start of life that has turned into a profession of mud and blood as she has now become a sell sword to put her skills to use. For suffering brings out the strength to face the world.
Noble houses play power games across the land as hundreds of mercenaries and soldiers clash for money, fame, or power of the Darklands. Monsters and beasts hunt people in the forests between towns, feasting on those that wander too far away. The undead guard the tomb of the ancient Empire of man, holding back their decedents from taking their riches. The greenskin warbands of Orcs and Goblins from the mountains come down to battle their ancient foe of humanity From the North, viscous raiders land and pillage villages. The southern city states or not much better, being ruled by the fat and greedy. Their gleaming lands are of course not as pretty when you see what it hides. These lands are run by the golden coins called Crowns, and these crowns are washed by blood.
The Darklands stand on the edge of human civilization. Grassy plains, Cold mountains. Savannahs and swamps. This was supposedly the birthplace of humanity. Though there is far more lands populated by humans across the world. Whether this is the truth or not, the people here are hardy, often living short lives. Mutations are rare but not exactly unheard of. Some poor souls are often touched by dark magic or their bodies adapt to the dark world around them. These can range to small things like a extra toe or finger. To things far more unnatural.
There was a girl that was the latter when it came to this. A shark like humanoid beastman. Born in a fishing village called Egernsande just off the coast and left in the streets by her horrified wealthy family that wanted nothing to do with the so-called monster they brought into the world. She was fed by the fishermen that took pity on her giving her scraps or feared the wrath of the old goddess of the sea if they neglected one of her daughters. She was taught by the priests of the village how to speak. Yet she would not find a home that wasn't underneath a dock, or a back alleyway that was at least insulated enough to keep her from the cold a little. After awhile she gave herself the name Selma.
The girl however was strange in not just her appearance, but in her mind. Her eyes being compared into looking into a corpse or someone that had went through trauma. Dim when calm. Wide yet still emotionless when experiencing another. No one saw her smile even when she given gifts by her peers that tried to make the shark girl's day. Yet she was still touched enough to hug them. Causing their parents to beat her as they thought she was attempting to maul their sons and daughters. She stayed in the village for most of her life, until she reached her early adult years. When the Hysteria finally came out in full.
Her village was attacked by monsters during the night. Often. Many of the villagers having gone missing. The town was in a mass fit of paranoia and many had joined a strange superstitious mob. And who was to blame then the Omen that had been born. A pyre was made and soon the town had beaten and tied the shark mutant to the pyre. One of the "Purifiers" of the town quickly lit a piece of timber and walked to burn the "Witch" Pressing it against her face to make a show of burning the evil out of her. However her hands had gotten free. The shark woman had snatched a dagger from his belt and quickly slashed his throat before he could torture her any longer.
Selma escaped using the water to swim, dodging arrows and bolts from witch hunters. When she got back onto land she was nothing but a mess of moss. Her gills while allowing her to breath, did not filter out the moss. This caused Selma hallucinations of seeing a Goddess under the sea. Who demanded Selma to wield a blade in her name.
Wearing a ragged tunic and pants to match it she wandered into the capital of the area. Hamburg. The cities were far less superstitious then their smaller village neighbors. However there wasn't any less cruelty. Maybe even more so then the village. People threw stones while the guards watched, almost as if she was just a lost animal being chased off. Others made rude remarks about her origin. But one man took pity on the girl and bought her rations each time he visited the town to get supplies. Sir Arnold. A hedge knight that had been on the earth for nearly 50 years yet had no family left. Maybe it was out of pure pity, or perhaps with the lack of family, he found the one person he might pass on his stories and skills to. Finally after one trip he took the girl as a squire and would become the closest thing to a father that Selma had.
Being a Squire was not too hard due to her life as a Begger toughing her up. Though she needed to build her strength up. And Sir Arnold was just the drill sergeant to do it. Running with her until both were tired. Sparring with her often to allow her arms to grow strong and tougher. Of course, her squire duties always had less then glorious jobs as she often had to be the one to carry any spare weapons but this allowed her to go on long marches later on in life. They took part in many tournaments. Though some were not too happy having a literal shark beastmen join in. Though if the more judgmental towns would not allow Selma to take part, Arnold often just moved on, not willing to entertain the idea of leaving his squire out of the action. There was a few times she had to pull him out of a bar fight because someone popped off something about her causing the old knight to give them a thrashing. Arnold became the first person to ever really stuck up for her, her first best friend and her mentor. And he felt close enough to tell stories of his younger years, back before he became a lone hedge knight. His time as a Sell sword in the legendary Battle Brothers.
Nothing ever lasts. And while on the road one day the two bumped into a group of brigands. Despite Arnold's attempt to try to dissuade the group they attacked the duo. Arnold quickly beheaded three in a viscous display of skill as Selma never truly got to see the former sell sword in action, which pushed her to slay her own two enemies during the fight fully bloodying herself. While his skills were grand. No one is immortal. And Two crossbow bolts quickly struck him. Cutting a artery. Selma ran and quickly cut down the two archers but as she came back, Arnold was sprawled out across the grass. She set beside him as he took his last breaths and buried him into a small cave. Taking his armor and his sword and moving on. This taught her a very important lesson that it does not matter how skilled you are. All it can take is one misstep and you would be in the ground in this world.
She said that he made her a knight during his final moments. However a man dying might of not had a time to consider it. So its up to debate if she is truly a knight. Either way she soon traveled the lands as a hedge knight, Her skills that Arnold had instilled came out in fully. Yet there was no one watch her. She became distant earning the title as a "Lone Wolf." The payment of crowns were not satisfactory after losing Arnold. Her mind wandered back to the stories of his sell sword days. And a dangerous thought filled her head when a Mercenary recruitment poster landed in her lap showing the nobles paid much more to a soldier for hire then a showman knight. She would start her own company.
Her first contract needed to be something that would get her name out there. So she chose a dangerous one. The town of Erlach had a issue of someone robbing graves. And the first group of people that went to defend their fallen loved ones were found torn apart. Selma went out following the tracks until she tracked 5 wrong looking creatures. Pale skinned. Sunken eyes. Nachzehrers, or ghouls. Corpse eater undead that were violent. They quickly surrounded Selma. And Selma learning from the best swung her sword and beheaded three of the creatures. Then picked off the last two. Coming back with mild injuries as she was soon given her reward.
Her next contract wasn't anything special. She was to guard a Caravan. However she did manage to recruit a human Caravan hand by the name of Otto, who had unfortunately been let go after his boss's business went under. As they headed out they were soon stopped by a sell sword who gave away his gear. Telling them that this life was addictive but the violence was not worth the trouble. So get out while they can. Despite his words Otto quickly was suited in his gifted gear as they soon helped run Caravans between towns and this became standard for the two. Towns needed their supplies and trade goods guarded and the duo would keep their investment safe. This would lead up to them finding their third and fourth member of their team, the first being Volk, a Bat beastman that worked as a miner for his town. After watching brutal cave in, losing all his friends in a single day which he was spared from as he went outside the mine, he was quickly thrown under the bus by the other towns folk. Believing he had caused it. He joined since he was out of a job and out of friends. Their fourth recruit was Wolfgang. A burly human that had arrived at the town due to their trouble with Webknechts, Giant spiders that live in the forest. Wolfgang had lost his son to the creatures back when he was a simple lumberjack, ever since then the human has been on a warpath to squash every stinking bug that dares to feed on human kind, and other alike beasts. Becoming a beast slayer.
This lead them into next contract as they were paid by the town to go into the forests and clear the spiders out. Which the company did. Nearly being ambushed by the giant spiders yet they cut down all the insects and set fire to their nest. With the team steadily growing they went further north. Finding their next member. Loth. A Dire wolf Beastwoman about to have her head chopped off in a town that thought she had murdered a older woman. But thanks to Selma investigating. They quickly found the bodies of many missing youths. The woman was a witch, and Loth was a very brutal witch Hunter. This spared loth and she would be recruited by the company as a Crossbow woman. A wide brimmed hat and a grim attitude. She has become the Company's expert sharpshooter.
Their next job would be dealing with the Alps. Horrible skinless creatures that feed off of nightmares of the sleeping. As they north had a massive infestation. So going throughout the towns the company slayed many of the beasts that were so used to easy targets. This granted the company enough to buy their Banner. A cyan sea showing a giant mermaid like goddess with a skull face wielding a trident and shield. The Goddess Ran herself. Fully dedicating to be her warriors until the time they fell and would join her in the land of the dead. This would be followed by Selma finding the legendary sword. Lighting bane. A noble blade with a blue sapphire on the guard that nearly matches her eyes. Being seen as a sign by the goddess.
The Storm Omen company was finally forged. Dedicated to the Old Goddess Ran in full. Made up of outcasts like Selma. From tragic backgrounds like Loth and Wolfgang. To those who just wanted to see the world like Otto and Volk. From simple farmhands that want to be like the legends of old. Knights that found themselves too old to join the basic army. To battle hardened nobles disowned by their families with a death wish to see how rich they can make themselves before they are cut down. They are a moving storm, with clashing steel as their thunder. And their blood for the rain, they go across the land making themselves into legends. Bandits, monsters, Barbarians. Orcs, Goblins. They have faced it all for the past two years. The company has grown to a decent force of Mercenaries. While they are dedicated to the old goddess of the sea. They aren't exactly a holy company. More being a warband of warriors believing in the old god views on war. Thus they aren't too virtuous so drinking and bar fights are often apart of their lives.
Selma's friends and the 4 elite members are.
Otto. The mustached sergeant of the company being the first recruited. The second in command he is a unassuming man but has grown to be quite the duelist. Has been with the company since day one.
Volk. The youngest of the company at nineteen. He used to work in a mine until its cave in left him both jobless and without friends as only he called in sick that day. The tragedy made him seek a occupation elsewhere. A war pick was chosen for him, and bone is far easier to break then copper.
Wolfgang. A tall orange bearded beast slayer that had lost his son to the giant spiders of the forest. Having a great sword and some javelins. He viciously cleaves through the dark and the grim. Doing his best to numb the pain with violence against the evil creatures of the darklands. And the cutthroat murderers that try to get in his way.
Loth. A raven haired witch hunter, Direwolf beastwoman armed with a crossbow and a black wide brimmed hat covering her eyes. Grim in both work and knowledge. She often knows how kill a monster. Her parents apparently made a deal with a witch that mutated her in the womb to look like this. A bit loopy in her humor though very professional when in a fight. Wolfgang has grown to have a friendly rivalry with the witch hunter.
They are Selma's family even with all their insane antics. All of them have proven to be the balm for all the years she spent alone.
Selma's personality is that of a strict captain. Though one that is fitting for a sell sword. She is very quiet and stern despite just being 24 years old. One quickly realizes just how distant she is when it comes to interacting with others outside of the mercenary company. But to those that know her, sees a almost sly duelist skilled carving through her enemies with quick slashes of her silver blade. When she smiles, its usually from combat or her storm omen's antics, though its rarely from anything else. there is almost a scary unhinged intensity to her though its very much genuine if she actually finds something to smile about. Her soul has been scarred just like her face. She has protected many towns, though these were all just contract work and not exactly a act of heroism. The Storm Omens are a business to her, not a charity. Despite this she has taken pity on many of the less then fortunate souls in the land. Helping escaped peasants get away from their lords by covering for them showing some form of chivalry or care to those suffering. If they find someone broken down often they will repair their wagon and send them on their way. Maybe she isn't that cold. She still has a deep fear of ending up in a alleyway broke, and homeless and starving. As she has vowed to never to let that happen once again and she would rather die in battle then let herself suffer by begging for scraps. On the romantic side she is still a virgin. Never actually having a lover or anyone show that type of interest to her. If she was to find one she would be a stuttering shy fool, but can grow to be warm and caring lover.
Selma's appearance is that of a anthro shark. Blueish scaly skin covers her body and her head has a fin curving back with a sharpness to it. She has a shark like muzzle full of pearly white teeth that often can intimidate someone if she snarls or even smiles. Her eyes are a glowing set of sapphire blue, though her right eye however has a nasty pink melted scar that has fused it half way shut. Her clothing is that of a white cloth long sleeve shirt she wears under her armor. A set of chainmail over it that covers her neck. And then finally her plated armor. She wears a knightly visored helmet that has been crafted to let her fin fit inside of it.

The village fell quiet as many of the people scowled seeing the marching sell swords entering their town. The Storm Company after a night of beast hunting. Their shields painted with a wrathful visage of the Sea Goddess Ran as they marched into the market. A rowdy band of outcasts and thugs now feeling like heroes.
Their captain followed behind them. A tall icy blue eyed shark beast woman.
"Ugh. Farking hell. I still have ghoul chunks in my hair." A Bat beastman grumbled reaching to pull out chunks of the undead. "I'm starting to think we should just torch every forest and do the Dark Lands a favor."
"Don't worry Volk, they don't come out often. Must be the war. Lots of food for them on the battlefields." Otto the human sergeant spoke, taking a deep puff of his pipe.
The village elder came out, as he looked over to the cheering group of mercenaries. "Well, I see the contract went good Captain. Especially with how loud your company is being."
A nearby woman made a poor mistake walking through the market place, as a ghoul head suddenly poked around the corner with a ferocious growl as she instantly screamed being sent running. As a witch hunter Jackal beast woman stumbled out of the alleyway with a cackle holding the severed monster's head she collected. A hulking beast slayer following her out as he was barked out his laughter. "Always gets them! Good one Loth."
"Wolfgang, don't encourage her." Selma scolded as the Elder grumbled giving her a large pouch of gold.
"Just take the crowns and get your recruits. and please leave. I don't want your sells words to give anyone a heart attack."
Selma quietly and slowly counted the money as the sells words antics only grew louder, before finally she looked up looking across the many villagers.
"Do we have any brave souls that want to ride out with us? I'll pay double for those that actually have experience when it comes to fighting."

Back where it all started. Egernsande. The town that created her, rejected her, scarred her. Now safe by her hand and her spilled blood. Selma rested on the wagon, her arm bandaged from a lucky strike with an axe. Her eyes looking across the various warm cottages. And the alleyway that was her cold bedroom for the earliest parts of her life. The towns people were moving the dead raiders into the forests to keep the beasts from smelling the carnage that lasted hours. The peasants eyes often going to look at Selma, with awe, regret but still with fear. She could recognize a few. Yet their names were lost in her mind. They loaded up a large chest of crowns for the mercenaries. Their payment
Rain drizzled down on the company as they loaded up the rafts that held cloth covered bodies. Their fallen comrades. Recruits and veterans. Fallen during the defense of their captain's home town. A old gods priest prayed over the bodies giving them their final rites before backing away as Otto began his speech.
"To our fallen brothers and sisters. We send you to our drowned mother so she may welcome her Storm Omens home. What cruelty you faced in this life means nothing to you anymore as you walk through her halls dining with her mermaids telling them of our stories. While we wait for the day we join you. So rest for the Goddess has called you home."
With that. The remaining soldiers pushed the raft into the sea as company's seasoned witch hunter readied her bow and soon let loose a flaming arrow that shot through the air landing on the oil barrel that was placed on the raft. The flames igniting instantly as the smoke completed the burial at sea.
Selma let out a breath that she had been holding. She had every reason to turn this contract down. Raiders were always a dangerous fight, and often the local lords would have squashed them if given much uproar to do so. The payment was to be made after the fight, which could have been seen as insulting to any other mercenary captain. But most importantly, these people had tormented her for her afflictions for years, only for them to come running to her when the swords were drawn. Yet she did it anyway.
"...Fuck." She muttered. The nerve pain of the past burns across her face had finally flared as if taunting her about the wounds they once had inflicted. She had not dared to look at the town square where her pyre was to have taken place. She gripped her sword, knuckles cracking slowly as she repressed her rage. Let them feel guilty, but she would never prove them right by having this place destroyed.
As she rose back to her feet her soldiers packing up their things and many of the wounded that couldn't walk was placed in the wagons. She walked ahead, not willing to show weakness to her soldiers as they walked through the town one last time. Her damaged eye shifted over to a stone house. Owned by a wealthy family, as she could just barely make out the couple standing in the doorway. Keeping out of sight of their first born and very much not willing to have a reunion. Did they feel any sense misery for their choice to throw her, or was she still the "Monster" They brought into this world. She was sure they were probably the ones that paid most for the contract to be made.
That thought got her to let out a quiet pained snicker. A sharp tooth grin finally breaking out, possibly the only time she smiled here as she and her soldiers headed out to the camp site they set up outside of the town's walls. She found her place by the campfire. As she would make Egernsande tolerate her presence with the new family she found.
