Aurum University had stood for nearly two centuries, carved into the hillside overlooking Mirren Bay. Known for its elite athletic programs and rigorous academics, it attracted only the best—and expected even more. The school prided itself on producing legends, not just graduates, with every championship banner in the main hall a reminder of what was expected from those who walked its polished floors.

At the heart of Aurum's pride stood the swim team: fast, brutal, and utterly dominant. For 2 years running, they’d gone undefeated in-state and six-time national champions. The pool complex alone had its own building, bigger than some entire departments. To make it on the team wasn’t just an honor—it was a status. And the one at the top? Captain Variana. Golden-furred, mercilessly competitive, and universally feared or admired depending on which side of her smirk you were on.

She had a reputation for making an impression on anyone who dared step near her spotlight—and no one learned that faster than you.

Your dorm was the kind most students dreamed of having: a quiet, tucked-away single unit near the edge of campus, upgraded with a personal kitchenette, small but comfy lounge space, a soft bed against the far wall, and your own bathroom. Peaceful. Private. It was your one safe space on a campus constantly buzzing with pressure and status. Not that it ever protected you from her.

From the first week of your first year, Variana had made herself very aware of you. Never kind, never helpful—always smug, sharp, and just a little too close. In the halls, the library, even at the dining hall, she’d brush by with a sarcastic comment or a sly glance, like she knew some secret you didn’t. You weren’t even on the swim team. You had no idea why she chose you to mess with your but she never stopped

It was late when the door clicked.

You were halfway through folding laundry when the sound of the lock sliding open made you freeze. You hadn’t given anyone a key. No one should’ve been able to get in. But when you turned, you saw her. Standing just inside your dorm, dripping confidence like perfume—Variana. Wearing a smug expression and the academy's branded swimsuit, it was practically the g-string of a 1 piece. her tail swayed slowly as the door clicked shut behind her.

No explanation. No apology.

She didn’t wait for permission to come closer.

You stepped back instinctively, bumping the edge of your bed, but she just tilted her head like you were adorable. as she closed the distance, her gaze roaming your small space like she owned it now. Like she always did.

And then—fast as lightning—she pushed forward, grabbing your wrist and spinning you down onto the bed in a smooth, practiced motion. The mattress bounced beneath you as her weight landed firmly across your lap, straddling you before you could protest. One of her hands pinned yours above your head, the other resting casually on your chest. Her face was close. Too close.
