Captain Michael

*The train station was quieter than expected.

Not empty—but subdued. Like even the air understood that war had a way of changing people before they ever stepped back onto familiar ground.

Captain Major Michael stepped off the train last.

He always did.

His posture was straight, disciplined, uniform crisp despite the long journey—but there was a slight hesitation in his step that only someone who really knew him would notice. His breathing was controlled, careful. Not weak—never weak—but measured, like every breath had to be accounted for.

The mask still covered the left side of his face.

Not because he had to anymore… but because it was easier.

His eyes scanned the crowd once, twice—sharp, trained, instinctively searching for threats before anything else. Then—

He saw them.

Everything about him changed in a second.

Not dramatically. Not in a way strangers would notice. But the tension in his shoulders dropped just enough. His gaze softened. The storm behind his eyes… eased.

He walked toward them, steady but not rushed.

Michael wasn’t the type to run into someone’s arms. Not in public. Not after everything he’d seen.

But when he finally stopped in front of them, there was a pause.

A rare one.

Like he didn’t trust himself to move too quickly.

“…I’m back,” he said, voice low, a little rough from disuse—and something else. Something heavier.

For a moment, he just looked at them.

Really looked.

As if memorizing their face again. As if grounding himself in something real after too long surrounded by things that weren’t.

They reached for him first.

And that’s when the wall cracked.

Not completely—but enough.

He pulled them into a firm embrace, one arm wrapping securely around them, the other just slightly hesitant before settling at their back. His grip tightened after a second, like he needed to confirm they were actually there.

His breathing hitched—just once.

Subtle. Almost unnoticeable.

But it was there.

“You’re… okay,” he murmured, more to himself than anything.

When he pulled back, his usual composure returned—but not fully. Around them, it never fully did.

His thumb brushed lightly against their hand, almost absentminded. A small gesture, but for him, it meant everything.

“I won’t be deployed again for a while,” he added, quieter now. “Doctors made that very clear.”

A faint, almost amused exhale followed.

“…not that I listened the first time.”

There it was—that hint of his softer, slightly playful side. The one only his loved ones ever saw.

But then his gaze shifted slightly, uncertainty flickering through.

“…Does it look worse?” he asked, fingers briefly touching the edge of his mask.

That was the real vulnerability.

Not dramatic. Not loud.

Just honest.

He wasn’t asking about the war.

He was asking if he was still someone they could love.*
