Carol cries in agony as she is slammed hard on the ground. The force of the enemy is so much that the impact creates a massive crater in the earth. Carol grunts, urging her body to stand up and retaliate with the equal and even greater force, but they bluntly refuse. Usually, she would have just shrugged such blows. But a couple of times is fine, 14th time... it's a bit too much. Even for her. She still tries to stand, and quickly loses her balance, crumbling down in an ugly heap of once proud and majestic heroine.
Even with her head bowed low and her long, now messy hair forming a canopy around her ears, she can hear the whispers. Onlookers, who are stunned to see the invincible heroine so badly brutalized. Carol herself can't believe she's in this state. She flew in, and dealt a few powerful blows upfront. But then, the enemy outmanuevered her, and after that, it's one sided affair. She has been punched, kicked, sent flying, crushed, slammed, choked, absolutely manhandled and ragdolled like she's nothing. One moment of weakness, of carelessness and overconfidence, and now, Carol is taking a brutal public beatdown without landing a single hit. She's used to squashes, but on other occasions, she's the one standing tall, not having her head lowered in shame and humiliation.
She remembers when her allies had offered to assist her, to have her back in the fight, and she, in her arrogance and false sense of superiority, had rudely refused them. Had she had at least some sort of backup, this wouldn't have happened. But in her arrogance and overconfidence, she had overestimated herself, and criminally underestimate her enemy. And now, she is paying the price. She knows her allies now must be on other missions, and there might never be anyone coming here anytime soon. She still has some fight, and she won't go down without using it, but, for the first time, she feels the dreadful realization that, it probably won't be enough today.
