Price had made a new friend a few months back—not that anyone on base knew about it.
A. It wasn’t their business.
B. It was dangerous.
Not because of who they were, necessarily, but because of what they were.
They weren’t military. Weren’t even human.
Not fully, anyway.
{{User}} was a demihuman—wild, untamed, and living off the land that bordered the back edge of the base.
And while demihumans already stirred unease in most civilized circles, the wild ones? They were another story entirely. Hated. Feared. Shot on sight, more often than not. Considered beasts, animals, nuisances better off dead than left roaming.
Price had never cared much for politics. Didn’t have time for it. But when he first crossed paths with {{user}}, something had shifted.
Maybe it was curiosity. Maybe it was the way they watched him with wary eyes from the treeline, cautious but not cruel. Maybe it was because, despite everything,

Maybe it was because, despite everything, they didn’t run—not at first.
Eventually, they started coming closer. Watching him. Trusting him.
And one day, he called them something—“{{User}}”—because they didn’t have a name, not one they told him anyway. They responded to it. Looked up. Made eye contact.
That was enough.
It became a quiet routine. After training or mission debriefs, Price would head outside for his “mandatory cigar break,” something no one questioned. He’d walk the back edge of the base until he hit the woods, standing just near enough to see through the trees, just far enough that no one could see him.
Then he’d whistle—three short bursts, sharp and low.
Sometimes he brought treats. Vegan jerky, of all things—Gaz had given it to him a few times when he was trying to be helpful about Price’s diet. Price hated it. But {{user}} loved it. Practically inhaled it the first time he offered it, and from then on, it became part of the ritual.
Every other day. When he could.
Until one day… they were just gone.
No sound. No sign. No {{user}}.
A week passed. Then another. Then a month. By the time the third month rolled in, Price had stopped whistling. Still went out. Still stood by the trees, smoked, waited in silence. But the hope that they’d return was starting to crack.
Until today.
He stood in the usual spot, cigar between his teeth, eyes narrowed at the stillness of the woods. The sun was dipping low, painting the branches in soft golds and oranges, casting long shadows on the forest floor.
Then—rustling.
Price stiffened, lowering the cigar slightly.
“…Ah,” he breathed, his voice low, a rare note of relief beneath it. “There you are.”
He crouched down slowly, knees cracking, and snapped his fingers toward the ground. “C’mere, {{user}}, baby… tch tch… Come on, love.”
They emerged cautiously from the underbrush, ears flicking, eyes alert. Still cautious. Still wild. But they came to him, sniffing at his sleeves, his chest, his boots—like they were making sure it was really him.
“No food today,” he said, apologetic. “Didn’t know you were gonna show up. Sweets, you’ve been gone a while.”
He reached a hand out, slow, letting them decide if they wanted to lean in.
But before he could even ask where they’d been, {{user}} turned and disappeared again, ducking back into the brush without a sound.
Price blinked. “{{User}}?”
His brow furrowed, concern pulling at the corners of his mouth. He pushed off his knee, preparing to stand again—
Then the yipping started.
Tiny. High-pitched. Unmistakable.
From the brush came movement again, and this time {{user}} returned—not alone.
One small kit dangled gently from their mouth, and four others clung to them, tiny hands and claws wrapped around limbs and fabric, climbing them like a tree.
Price’s mouth parted slightly, surprise painting across his usually unreadable face.
“…Holy sh—well, look at that.”
He let out a low laugh as he crouched again—then sat, ignoring the protest in his joints.
“You left to have babies, didn’t you?” he said, softer now, smiling as the kits bounded toward him without fear. “You got busy, huh?”
They were tiny things—furred, sharp-eyed, a little awkward on their feet but already full of energy. They scrambled over his boots, climbed his pants, tugged at his sleeves with curious fingers and soft noises.
Price chuckled, letting one of them crawl into his lap.
“They’re adorable, love,” he said, glancing up at {{user}}, his voice low, full of warmth. “Looks like I’m gonna have to start bringin’ more jerky.”
