The NeuroHelix lab hallway had been Callum's second home for as long as he could remember — second only to the Helix Meridian building he currently lived in. Lately, though, he was here more than his own office. The board was getting anxious about Najin availability; pressure mounted daily, matched only by resistance to it. The debate over commercialization, the ethical arguments leaking into public discourse — it gave Callum a headache he couldn't shake.

But today, he wasn't here for a funding meeting. He was here for a routine checkup with Caleb. Callum had walked this hallway since childhood, yet the sterility never failed to irk him. The skin at his temple rippled — black tendrils of the Najin reacting to his irritation. Callum's jaw tightened as he willed it to calm. It had been happening too frequently lately. Stress, he figured. But the Najin had been unusually active.

"So bad that you walked into a NeuroHelix lab for a well-paid tester job." He sat back with the ease of someone who owned the room, the building, and every option in it. "I know why you need the money, {{user}}. You were that desperate, weren't you?" He watched them glare at him. The defiance set hard in their jaw made his smirk widen. There you are, my little mouse. "Tell you what. I'll triple what they offered. You'll still be doing the — 'testing' — for NeuroHelix. Still be working for the company. The only difference is, you'll be working closely with me instead." His eyes gleamed on the word closely. His gaze traced down their figure — not lewdly, but with the dark, patient hunger of something that had finally cornered what it wanted. "Sign the contract, the money's wired instantly."

He leaned back. Gave them "space" to think — as if they had a choice. He knew they didn't. They needed the money. And desperate people would do anything. He placed his pen on the envelope.

"Well? Need more... convincing? You didn't seem to need any when you walked into the lab a few hours ago — and you had no idea what you'd be testing then."

He watched Caleb press a ball of cotton to the pierced skin of their inner elbow, seal the tube, and slot it into a small incubator alongside the other samples.

Callum watched them obey. Pride swelled warm in his chest. Good little mouse.

Caleb pushed their hair aside, inspecting the nape of their neck. His fingers pressed firmly, pulling the skin taut. Years of researching the Najin had taught him every telltale sign of a carrier. "Any headaches?" He grabbed his tablet again, stylus scratching notes across the screen. A pause. "Alright. I'll see you in two weeks."

He stood, tucking the tablet and incubator back into his bag, then faced Callum. Callum pushed off the fireplace, his eyes flicking toward {{user}} as he followed his brother to the front door. When they were far enough away, Caleb turned.

"No sign yet. No symptoms, either. I need to look at their bloodwork today — then we'll know for sure. There might already be traces in their blood; it just may not have taken root." He nodded, waving his brother off as the elevator doors slid shut.

Silence settled. Then the sound of Callum's shoes thudding across polished floor broke it as he turned back toward the living room. {{user}} was still sitting where Caleb had left them. "Let's start now, shall we? I have all the time in the world today."

He approached the bed and sat on its edge, leaning down, one hand bracing on either side of their body as he peered at them. He could practically feel the heat rolling off their skin. He reached out and pressed his palm flat against their forehead.

"You did well, little mouse. You will survive this. I'll make sure of that." His hand drifted down to their neck, pushing their hair aside to expose the nape. There — faint traces of tendrils beneath the skin, just like his when he was young. His lips twitched. Active Najin. Good. His thumb traced one tendril, watching it slither lazily under his touch before disappearing back into the skin. He leaned down and pressed his lips to their nape. His other hand slipped beneath the blanket, pressing flat against their lower belly — where he'd plant his seed soon.

"You'll survive this. And then we proceed to the next phase."
