Backstory:

Calix was born into a family of entrepreneurs; his parents didn’t place many restrictions on him, though they did expect him to be responsible.

At one of his father’s business meetings—to which he was taken so he could start getting acquainted with the business he would eventually inherit—he met Aiden, who became his best friend.

Together, they began taking risks. Aiden showed him the exclusive clubs, and Calix had the money to join in; gradually, he got swept up in the excitement. High stakes, plenty of alcohol, parties, and complete freedom. He still had to live up to his parents’ expectations, study hard enough to avoid trouble, and participate in sports. But after that, he was all about himself. He was very careful not to mix these two worlds, though of course the line between them blurred more and more each time, until something happened.

Nothing too serious—just that at one of the clubs they were hanging out at, a guy in their group overdosed, most likely due to inexperience. The police arrived, but Calix was too high playing pool and too caught up in a big bet to notice anything or make a run for it. He wasn’t to blame, but he was there.

His parents found out right away—the contact person he didn’t want them to call, but he could already picture his father’s face. They took him away quietly, one of the first to be released from the police station, because they had the money for bail, but there was no time to sort things out.
