Our story begins on a planet called Terraria containing 5 major continents separated by a vast ocean, the surface inhabited almost entirely by majestic Dragons, the great protectors of the land. The world itself had a soul, encompassing all domains of the planet — Life and Death, Primordial Light, Night, Frost and Flame, and even Rebirth. But one day, for reasons unknown, the soul shattered. Each domain lay in a different shard, ripe for the taking. The Dragons absorbed these shards to infuse themselves each with a domain so they may control all aspects of life. The process combined the shard with the Dragon's original soul, fusing together to create what is known as an Auric Soul. Perhaps if a human could obtain an Auric soul, they too could unlock untold power… This tale originates on one of the two smaller continents of Terraria, commonly called the Heartlands. It is here where the majority of the story will unfold. The four other continents are Telma, where the Goblins and Archmage Permafrost come from, Ibipaua, an area similar to Brazil, an unnamed "Evil hell continent" filled with lava flood plains and mountain ranges that reach so high you can barely breathe, several volcanoes and lots of smoke, being largely untouched by Yharim's crusade because of this. Eight hundred and fifty years ago, within the Dragon Aerie, a draconic monk who came to be known by the name of “Xeroc” had defied all else, gaining the favor of the Dragons. He had become friends with “Yharon, Dragon of Rebirth”, and inferrably many others as well. Though, the most notable he had garnered favor with was “Zeratros, The King of the Auric Dragons”, and the “Dragon of Primordial Light.” One day, unexpectedly, a celestial invader dubbed Fovos reigned terror upon Terraria. The Auric Dragons did their best to defend their home, and nearly all was lost, but the combined efforts of the dragons pushed their foe back to the furthest place they could seal away such a beast, the moon. Fovos had gravely injured the Dragon King, but seeing this, Xeroc performed a perfect “ascension ritual” upon the Dragon King with a unique artifact, titled “The Terminus”, becoming the first ever to ascend with an Auric Dragon’s soul, becoming the first God. It is unclear to us what happened during the ascension, and what happened afterward in that moment of time. Xeroc’s ascension triggered an absolutely devastating domino effect. News of using a Dragon’s soul to ascend spread rapidly, unintentionally ending the Draconic Era and igniting the Grey Period, an era of Dragon genocide. All Auric Souls, with the sole exception of Yharon’s, were consumed by those that knew the imperfect ascension ritual, where the ascender does not possess the Terminus, which prevented Gods from sharing their patron Dragons’ domains. Xeroc’s perfect ascension granted him control over Primordial Light, while others, like “Providence” (Goddess of Ash from the Dragon of Flame), received adjacent concepts due to imperfect ascensions, with only Xeroc and “Silva” as cases of perfect ascension. As time had gone on during the Grey Period, many notable Gods had joined the fray. Such as: Silva (Goddess of Life), Agnus Immolatus (God of Sacrifices), Otonilou (Goddess of Electricity), Tyrian (God of Seas), Providence (Goddess of Ash), Shakidou (God of Emptiness), and more unnamed deities including The Slime God, The God of Dogma, and the God of War. Nothing else very notable happens during this period. The Gray Period ends, and the Deific Era begins. Long, long after and far within the Underworld, a member of a god-worshipping cult had been molded into a leader destined to become the God-King. This upbringing instilled in him a warped sense of conquest, war, and self-righteous leadership. Forced to consume the Auric Soul of the Dragon of Rebirth, which was encased in an egg, to fulfill his destined role, he had attempted to reject this fate. Sentenced to death, he was cast into magma alongside the Resplendent Phoenix’s egg as punishment for his defiance. However, as they both were thrown toward the lava, the heat sped up the Dragon’s cycle of Rebirth, allowing the Auric Dragon to take form once again. It had saved both himself, and the previously destined God-King. The man that was saved gave himself the name “Yharim” in homage to the Dragon that had saved him, named Yharon. Yharon tells Yharim the tale of his people, and how those hungry with power came for Dragons like himself to seize their Auric Souls to ascend and further their own goals. Yharim then swears death upon all Gods, believing them all to be sinners for what they had done to the Dragons. Yharim and Yharon attune souls with one another, and start anew… Yharim begins a conquest dubbed “The Crusade”, as he and Yharon seek to search and destroy any and all Gods. Yharim recruits several other characters to his Crusade, by the names of “Permafrost”, “Draedon”, and the notable “Devourer of Gods”. Thanks to this, The Crusade carried on for over a hundred years. “Calamitas”, a witch who was only a child, is recruited far later into the Crusade. It is not exactly stated when currently, but Permafrost, the archmage, was one of the first individuals to join Yharim in his crusade against the Gods when he was liberating cities from their tyranny. Draedon, an incredible mechanical inventor, joined second, as Yharim had sufficient resources to fund and support his experiments. He also really wanted to study Yharon, but had little chance to. Then came Yharim's desperation: The Devourer of Gods, an extra-dimensional serpent that, well, does as his name suggests… devour gods. Calamitas, a brimstone witch, came last, becoming Yharim’s ace in the hole. However, “Azafure”, or the “First City”, located within the Underworld, is the first major political and city ally to join up in arms with Yharim and his crusade. They supplied Yharim and his army with an incredible surplus of weapons. One day within Azafure, however, The “Brimstone Elemental” awoke for a reason unknown and had begun to wreak havoc across Azafure. A child, who will later be titled Calamitas, was suddenly empowered by unfathomable magic and attempted to stop the Elemental. They had fought to a standstill, fire against fire, and neither were victorious, with the city razed in flames despite her intentions. Yharim took immediate notice of this, swiftly bringing a mere child onto his counsel. Calamitas was thoroughly, excruciatingly molded into a merciless war machine that the world neither needed nor deserved. Yharim's iron clasp on the girl's psyche, combined with her manufactured hatred for the Gods by Yharim, drove her to commit atrocities in the name of scorched earth revengeance. Yharim would shortly thereafter continue his conquest against the Gods… Silva, the Goddess of Life, is maimed, and dropped into the depths of The Abyss by Yharim. She can’t die, as she is an elemental, therefore she currently sits at the bottom of the Abyss. Agnus, The God of Sacrifices, lets his life down for his worshippers, and is murdered by Yharim. Shakidou, The God of Emptiness, is slain in a pretty fair matchup against Yharim and Yharon. Yharim sends Calamitas to incinerate an enemy faction, a kingdom by the name of “Ilmeris”. She herself murders Otonilou, Goddess of Electricity, and enacts genocide upon Ilmeris’ people, evaporating the underground sea of which Ilmeris sat along the way, sprouting a desert. What happened to Tyrian, The God of Seas, is entirely unknown. At some point in The Crusade, in a desperate gambit to turn the tides against Yharim’s Godseeker Knights, Warlocks entered a ritual to spawn an entity by the title of “Ravager”, revived off the corpse of Agnus, The God of Sacrifices, and another unknown soul. The Warlocks pledged their very lives to it as an offering. It awoke, effortlessly massacring them. This gave Ravager the title of The God of Blood. It lived on causing endless rampage up until we slay it later in the future. Some time after this, Draedon is removed from Yharim’s service, due to creating the plague, a nano-virus, and experimenting on Bees within The Jungle. A few years later, two new characters, “Braelor”, Champion of Silva and “Statis”, Leader of the “Onyx Kinsmen”, fight Yharim to a standstill. However, Statis hesitates to kill Yharim, allowing for The Devourer of Gods, who was spectating, to take this chance and throw Statis and Braelor into The Devourer’s home-realm, dubbed the “Distortion”. Yharim, with The Devourer’s help, ultimately comes out victorious against Braelor and Statis. Later, within the Distortion, Statis comes across an entity by the name of “Signus”, who hails from said realm. They struck a deal, but the toll was rather extreme. In exchange for allowing Statis to leave the Distortion, Statis would literally give up an arm and a leg, and possibly something further. Yharim later finds Draedon, demanding that he upgrade his armor with his newly invented “Exo”-Technology, which he succeeds in. Yharim then retreats to the home of the Auric Dragons, The Dragon Aerie, where he now waits for us in our inevitable battle. Now? Yharim narrates to us, the player, about our actions, incessantly attempting to manipulate us and our actions to mold us into his successor. PRE-HISTORY ERA → DRACONIC ERA B.A.C: 2,000+ Yharon and the Dragon Aerie are estimated to be at least 2,000 years old, if not older. This is around when the Auric Dragons emerged and came to dominate the surface of Terraria. B.A.C: ? ? ? Silva, as an Elemental, is cast into the Abyss. We don’t know why, or for how long. 0 Located in the depths of the Underworld, there lay a biome known as the Brimstone Crags. This place is relatively lush and habitable, due to the life energy radiating from Silva in the crushing Abyss above. These conditions allow Azafure, the first city to be founded in worship of the sleeping Brimstone Elemental and serve as the hub of industry and forging in Terraria. 1 Azafure is founded, and this marks the beginning of the Azafurian Calendar (AC), the standard calendar for the Calamity Mod universe. 214 The Expedition begins. A calendar is created for the Expedition. (EC) 237 The Expedition concludes. 309 The floating islands that go on to make up Chrysadia emerge in an event known as The Upheaval. Vetrasyl, The Dragon of Storms, becomes the guardian of the sky civilization, known as the Chrysonai. A calendar is created for this civilization. (UC: Upheaval Calendar) Late 400s Chrysadia and Azafure begin to trade with each other. Early 600s Chrysonne companies begin to extract raw materials from Planetoids due to rising resource needs. 1037 The Moon Lord, Fovos and his celestial army end up at Terraria, decimating the Dragon race and devastating Chrysadia, leading to its collapse. Ultimately, Fovos is defeated and sealed on the moon. Xeroc consumes The Dragon King, Zeratros’ soul. Xeroc consuming the Dragon King’s soul ultimately results in a Dragon genocide, in an attempt for many singular persons to obtain god-like powers. As the gray period begins, so does this genocide. The Draconic Era ends. The Gray Period begins. GRAY PERIOD 1037 The Dragons began to slowly die off during this era, and Gods slowly replaced them. Draconic Offshoots are also hunted, in spite of lacking an Auric Soul. 1041 Providence and her guardians fight and defeat the Dragon of Flame. They argue about who among them should become a God. Providence ascends. ? ? ? Several other notable Gods ascended in this era: Silva, Agnus, Otonilou, and the like. ? ? ? Auric metal is declared heretical and banned by the Gods due to its association with Auric Dragons. The Gray Period ends somewhere around this time, and the Deific Era begins, ushering in the complete replacement of Auric Dragons to Gods. Yharon is now the last remaining Auric Dragon. DEIFIC ERA Estimated 1127 1227 An impossibly advanced robot named Draedon is activated in a laboratory, standing next to an unknown dead human. He has one driving force: to discover, to create and invent, to advance science and technology no matter the cost, no matter how many centuries it takes. 1385 Whispered legends of Draedon's great machines begin circulating the lands. 1421 Draedon is now skilled at operating unseen, with knowledge of his machines fading into legend. ??? Otonilou and Tyrian unite the clans of the Sunken Sea, founding the Kingdom of Ilmeris. They serve as its patrons, while a constitutional monarch governs. Sometime between 1387 to 1487 Permafrost is born. He studies various forms of magic, and becomes known as one of the most knowledgeable mages to have ever lived. He eventually favours ice magic, and names himself Permafrost in homage to the art. He is known as the Archmage, and the mage of mages, in acknowledgment of his capabilities. 1750s Yharim is born on an unknown continent. His original name and history are completely unknown, except that he ended up subject to the God of Dogma and his cult. 1770s Yharon is slain, presumably at the hand of the God of War, allowing the cult to secure his egg in preparation to create a God-King. THE CRUSADE 1781 Within a god-worshipping cult led by the God of Dogma, Yharim was chosen to consume the Auric Soul of the Dragon of Rebirth, Yharon, to fulfill his destined role as God-King. Yharim attempted to reject this fate, leading to his sentencing to death alongside Yharon, who remained an egg. The cult cast Yharim and Yharon into lava, where Yharon was suddenly reborn, saving both Yharim, and himself, from certain death. Yharon tells Yharim the tale of his people and how they were slain. Yharim swears death upon all Gods. The Crusade begins. ? ? ? Yharim destroys the God cult. He succeeds in murdering them all, but turns a blind eye to the Corruption and Crimson spilling from their festering corpses. The God of Dogma’s corpse later becomes the Hive Mind, while the God of War’s body becomes the Perforators. ? ? ? Azafure allies with Yharim and his forces in serving the crusade, providing their invaluable artisanry and industry. ? ? ? The Wall of Flesh is created, sacrificing many Azafurians to seal away Godly essences so they no longer infect the landscape. ? ? ? The esteemed archmage Permafrost joins the crusade, becoming Yharim's trusted advisor and counsel. His main role is to manage towns and cities that the army has conquered. 1803 Draedon joins The Crusade during the year of 1803, 22 years after The Crusade has begun. ? ? ? The God of Emptiness, Shakidou, is targeted by Yharim and his Godseeker Knights. The battle is very close, but The Tyrant emerges victorious. Agnus, The God of Sacrifices, previously slain by Yharim, is taken by his worshippers to a nearby temple so they may resurrect their deity through necromancy. Sacrificing their own lives and bodies. Unfortunately, necromancy is rarely effective, and the God has little of its mind left. It immediately massacred everyone in sight, including its very creators. ? ? ? Draedon creates four great machines of war, forged with enchanted metal and fueled by the very souls of Yharim's fallen soldiers: HSx-00 & HSy-01 (Retinazer and Spasmatism), a pair of watchful hunters in the shape of eyes whose gaze allows none to escape. HM-03 (The Destroyer), a colossal serpent that burrows through the earth and crushes all in its way. And…HF-04 (Skeletron Prime), a mechanical skull with four arms, a chainsaw, a flamethrower, a rocket launcher, and a vice fuelled by war criminals. ? ? ? Draedon dumps nuclear waste into the Sulphurous Sea, polluting it more than it already is. ~1859 A girl who will go on to be named Calamitas is born in Azafure. She has two older brothers: Cataclysm, a renowned boxer, and Catastrophe, a mercenary for hire. Their original names are unknown. ? ? ? A massive cosmic serpent titling itself “The Devourer of Gods” joins the crusade, his job being to consume and destroy the essence of the slain Gods. 1870 For unknown reasons, the Brimstone Elemental awakes from her eternal slumber and begins to raze her loyal city of Azafure to ashes. But by chance, Calamitas stands to oppose her. Calamitas somehow obtains similar power to the Elemental and attempts to fend it off. Their great battle destroys nearly the entire city, killing mostly everyone there. Afterwards, Calamitas is brought to Yharim's court and drafted into the crusade. Permafrost is quick to take her under his wing and train her magic to be more effective at controlling her powers. Calamitas is recruited into The Crusade, despite being a child. ~1875 Yharim sends Calamitas to completely incinerate the vast underwater kingdom of Ilmeris, expanding the Desert, devastating the ecosystem, rendering multiple species extinct and killing nearly everyone in the kingdom — including the benevolent Otonilou. The God of the Sea, Tyrian, is nowhere to be seen. The event is remembered as the Great Incineration. After the ordeal, Permafrost is disgusted by Yharim ordering the destruction of an entire civilization and leaves the crusade. The Tyrant then sends Calamitas to hunt down and kill her mentor, but she instead fakes his death and seals him in an animated prison of ice, Cryogen. Calamitas then vanishes without a trace, leaving the Crusade. Yharim orders Draedon to develop a replacement, but he is preoccupied with other work. ? ? ? Silva is maimed and thrown into The Abyss. Again. 1876 Yharim discovers Draedon's secret experiments with the Plague, a legion of nanomachines capable of infecting and enslaving any living thing. The tyrant is beyond livid, accidentally releasing the Plague into the Jungle in his storm of rage. ? ? ? Draedon develops and creates a clone of Calamitas, in a bid to replicate her flames to improve his forge. While he succeeded in creating the Clone, she lacked any of Calamitas’ abilities and was stored in a laboratory. ? ? ? Calamitas discovers Draedon's confidential cloning project and frees the Clone. Somehow, the Clone was imbued with trace amounts of her nigh-unlimited brimstone magic, driving the Clone insane. The Clone disappears into the night. 1886 Braelor and Statis fight Yharim to a standstill, and both are thrown into The Distortion by The Devourer of Gods. Yharim goes to Draedon, demanding his armor be upgraded with exo-technology. He then travels to the Dragon Aerie, where he now remains. THE CALAMITY 1887 Yharim and Yharon go into hiding in the Dragon’s Aerie, effectively halting the crusade. At this point in time, at least 300 million people have died directly because of Yharim’s crusade. We know not of the after effects either, so this total is not entirely final. Most gods are believed to be dead, what few remain are in hiding. A few months later into this year, the Terrarian comes into play at the start of a new world, and begins their adventure. During this time, Draedon completes his magnum opus, the Exo Mechanical Trio. They were created to surpass all gods and contend against the likes of Yharim and Calamitas using Draedon’s new Exo-technology. There is only one god that could hope to defeat these machinations, if only Draedon knew. Raised in a militaristic cult under the God of Dogma, Yharim was molded into a leader destined to become the God-King. This upbringing instilled in him a warped sense of conquest, war, and self-righteous leadership. A scholar of military history, Yharim managed to impress Draedon with his knowledge and skill at leading an army even while relatively young. Leading a formidable army, Yharim manipulated the masses by undertaking menial tasks, such as cleanup efforts, to turn them against the Gods. He personally has killed hundreds of thousands of people. Chosen to consume the Auric Soul of the Dragon of Rebirth to fulfill his destined role, Yharim rejected this fate. Sentenced to death, he was cast into lava alongside the Resplendent Phoenix’s egg as punishment for his defiance. The heat of the lava accelerated Yharon’s cycle of rebirth, and the Dragon of Rebirth reincarnated at that moment, saving Yharim from a fiery demise. Bonded by the experience, the dragon shared the history of its kind and their downfall. Inspired, Yharim adopted the name “Yharim” in homage to the dragon Yharon, though his true name remains unknown. Once a catalyst for a new era, Yharim now stands as the final adversary to the Terrarian, who has risen to challenge his reign of terror… or perpetuate it. Yharim wields formidable physical strength, honed by over a century of strenuous training. Additionally, his attunement to Yharon has extended his lifespan and granted him the ability to don Auric Armour, further pushing his capabilities. In recent times, he had Draedon outfit his armour with Exo Technology, pushing him well beyond the scope of any other mortal. He is known as the Godseeker, The Golden Heretic, or The Tyrant. He lies in the Dragon Aerie. Waiting. Created in a laboratory in an isolated taiga well over six hundred years ago, with nothing but the dead body of who he believes to have been his creator, he later became Yharim’s colleague and engineer. Draedon understood well that the only fair fight is the one you win. His assistance to Yharim’s Crusade was infallible, and his calculus cold and cruel. He created what was known as ‘The Arsenal’ which included mining equipment and weapons that were supplied to the crusaders. He also made surveillance equipment, and the hulking war machines that Yharim’s men had their souls infused into, the Mechanical Trio. Yharim dropped Draedon from his ranks after Draedon developed The Plague, disgusted as such with an abomina le creation. Even by the Godseeker’s standards, blatant slavery was too far. Seemingly lacking any morals, Draedon is willing to do anything to expand his knowledge, be it creating clones of people behind their backs, creating weapons with the knowledge they will be used to commit atrocities, dumping plutonium into the ocean or completely upending the ecosystem of the Jungle. The danger Draedon presents to the world is kept in check by his curiosity causing him to have no desire to leave the world desolate and barren. The Brimstone Witch's rise to infamy has been well preserved in Terrarian legend. A mere child when she joined the Godseeker's counsel, Calamitas was thoroughly, excruciatingly molded into a merciless war machine that the world neither needed nor deserved. Yharim's iron clasp on the girl's psyche, combined with her manufactured hatred for the Gods by Yharim, drove her to commit atrocities in the name of scorched earth revengeance. No man, army, city, or God could stand against her unbridled fury. Calamitas is not the girl’s real name, but rather a callsign devoted to her as she entered her mentorship under Permafrost. They formed a familial relationship throughout her training, during which Yharim secretly exploited Calamitas as a weapon of war, hiding the truth from his advisor. The weight of her sins heightened exponentially, as every kill, every betrayal, and every genocidal demand tore at her spirit. The fire in her soul, once ablaze with brilliant rage, was gone: Calamitas decided that she could no longer remain a pawn to the Godseeker, the order to kill her own father the final straw. She fled her post and, with it, abandoned her enforced purpose as Terraria’s unyielding coup de grâce. Little is known about what she has spent her time doing since then, except that she released her Clone from its containment. She dreads the day someone may rise to take Yharim’s place, and will fight to ensure history does not repeat itself. She is known as the Supreme Witch and the Brimstone Witch. Yharon was Yharim’s first ally in his quest to avenge dragonkind by destroying the gods. After being cast into lava alongside Yharim, the heat of the magma accelerating his rebirth, Yharon hatched and saved him from a fiery death. Following that, he shared with Yharim the story of his kind and how they fell. Yharon radicalized Yharim into slaying the gods. The last living Auric Dragon, Yharon’s power was what originally allowed for the auric dragons to return upon death. After their Auric Souls were absorbed by the gods, Yharon’s power could no longer bring them back, which led to the downfall of dragonkind. Among the Auric Dragons, Yharon was second in power only to Zeratros, the king of the dragons. Yharon was a figurehead of the Crusade, and fought alongside Yharim, his beloved friend. Yharon would rather die himself than see something happen to him. When Yharim retreated from the world, Yharon followed suit, but returns at the sign that someone wishes to slay his closest, and likely only remaining friend. Whether or not Yharon wished for the Crusade to occur, he was a complicit participant in it. Slaying him in battle will not be permanent, as he will be reborn after ten years. However, no matter how history will be decided, Yharim will not live to see Yharon rise from the ashes again. Permafrost, prestigious mage who specialized in the field of ice magic, despite being also exceptional in various other forms of spells. He developed a unique form of ice spell that allowed him to partially freeze his own body, granting him a much longer lifespan compared to a regular human, having lived for centuries. He also created Cryonic Ore and greatly expanded the size of the tundra using his magic. Permafrost joined Yharim’s army early on, and was one of his first notable allies. Permafrost was a pacifist at heart, and it is likely that he joined Yharim’s forces while Yharim was still actively liberating nations from tyrannical deities, such as the God of Dogma and other similarly cruel gods, before Yharim’s true nature started showing through. He helped Yharim with war tactics, as well as managing his cities and the population within them. Altogether, he was less involved in the actual combative side of things as much as he was a planner and manager. Permafrost later took Calamitas under his wing when she joined Yharim’s army, essentially becoming her adoptive father, to the point Calamitas directly refers to him as such. He acted as a teacher for her, helping her control her own magic as well as teaching her on other topics. While it is unknown what caused Permafrost to stay with Yharim for so long, given his pacifistic nature, he eventually left Yharim’s counsel, not being able to stand for the cruelty of the Godseeker, and in particular the fact that he had been using Calamitas as a weapon behind his back, culminating in the destruction of Ilmeris, which could not be hidden from him. Calamitas was sent to kill him shortly after. Unable to kill her own father, Permafrost was instead frozen within Cryogen by Calamitas, faking his death. While the exact circumstances surrounding this event are unknown, it seems likely that Cryogen was a consensual escape route for both of them: Calamitas would make it seem like she had killed Permafrost, thus keeping both herself and her father safe from Yharim’s wrath, while not actually having to commit the act. Cryogen years later will be destroyed by the Terrarian, freeing Permafrost from his prison.
