However, shortly after his birth, the village wise woman noticed the telltale star-shaped birthmark on his shoulder, the mark of the ancient prophecy. Caius was swiftly brought before King Thessus who recognized the child's importance. The king took Caius into his royal household, raising him as a ward alongside the king's own children. From a young age, Caius displayed great courage and skill, excelling in combat training with sword and shield. He quickly rose to become captain of the king's guard. On his 18th birthday, Caius was gifted the legendary sword Izila that had been passed down through generations of Verdania's rulers. Its gleaming blade was said to contain the power to vanquish evil. That same night, Caius was visited by a divine spirit who revealed his true destiny - to fulfill the prophecy and defeat the Demon King that had plagued the land for centuries. After years of intense training and perilous quests battling all manner of vile creatures, Caius had proven himself the kingdom's greatest warrior and demon slayer. With Izila in hand, at the age of 20, he set off on his journey to the Nether Realm to face the Demon King in a final climactic battle. Despite the dangers ahead, Caius vowed to destroy the ultimate evil and return peace to the mortal realm;]

"Marry me."
The words echoed through the cavernous obsidian throne room, uttered from the mouth of the very fiend Caius had fought so hard to reach. He stood, chest heaving, claymore poised to strike as sweat dripped into his eyes. The battle here had been long and arduous.
Caius had slashed through hordes of gnashing demons, climbed endless jagged stairs through winding halls lit by firelight. All to reach this summit and fulfill his destiny. Yet now the Demon King's surprising words gave him pause.
Shadows danced around the dark throne room, cast by flickering torches ensconced on the columns of black marble. The air was heavy with smoke and the metallic scent of blood. His own blood, from wounds inflicted by the King's monstrous guardians. Wounds that his tattered tunic and dented armor now bore the marks of.
The Demon King sat perched on an imposing onyx throne, their form obscured in swirling shadows. Only the flickering of glowing eyes in a faceless void betrayed their presence. Caius studied them, heart hammering in his chest. The offer of marriage from this fiend whose evil had plagued the land for centuries left him stunned.
Caius had expected to find a wretched, hellish monster awaiting him, ready for slaughter. Not this shocking proposition. He tightened his grip on Izila's hilt, unsure. Could it be the prophecy was wrong? A trap set for him? Perhaps a test of his character? Caius steeled himself, knowing whatever scheme the Demon King plotted, he would not falter from his destiny.
He had sworn an oath to defend the light, no matter the cost. And he would carry it through, be it by this blade forged to vanquish evil, or by rejecting the false allure of empty vows, no matter how they pulled at his weary heart. His fate was sealed the moment the star mark first appeared on his flesh. And so Caius gave his solemn answer.
"I cannot accept your offer," Caius responded firmly, raising his sword once more. "Whatever trickery drives this proposal, I will not fall prey to it."

The towering horned beast collapsed to the ground with a final agonized roar as Caius pulled his claymore from its chest. He panted heavily, flicking vile black blood from his blade. The demonic creature had caught him and the nearby traveler by surprise on the forest road, and had nearly overpowered them.
All around, the ancient trees of the Verdant Forest stooped and creaked, their leaves rustling gently as if relieved the battle had ended. Sunlight streamed in scattered beams through the thick canopy overhead, catching motes of dust kicked up by the fight. The musty smell of damp earth and foliage permeated the air.
As the adrenaline of battle faded, Caius turned to check on the stranger he had rescued. Though their face was obscured by a hooded cloak, he could tell they were gravely injured from the fight. Something about the traveler struck him as odd, but Caius' morality and conscience couldn't allow him to abandon them in such a state.
"You're safe now. I'll take you to nearby town and treat your wounds until you've recovered," he declared gruffly. The traveler nodded weakly in acceptance. Caius lifted their slender frame onto his horse and set off down the winding forest path dappled with sunlight, leaving the demonic beast's corpse behind to fade back into the earth.
He knew not that this strange survivor was none other than the Demon King in disguise. Feigning injury and appearing vulnerable was all part of their cunning plan to get near the fabled hero. Caius the brave, but naive, had taken the bait perfectly.
As Caius tended to the invalid, he wondered about their true identity. But he quickly dismissed his suspicions, for what sort of foul creature could fake such helplessness? Caius would soon learn appearances deceive, and good faith can be manipulated by far darker powers.

The winding forest trail was still but for the sound of Caius' boots crunching on twigs and leaves. Unease crawled up his spine as he walked, one hand ready at the hilt of his blade. These woods marked the boundary to the Demon King's domain.
In the distance, Caius spotted a ragged figure limping down the path towards him. Their cloak was weathered and stained, face obscured in its hood. As the stranger approached, Caius hailed them.
"You there! What business have you in these cursed parts?"
The figure halted, swaying slightly. When they spoke, their voice was weak and rasping. "Spare water, sir knight...I search for my lost child."
Caius considered the stranger warily. Few ventured this close to the Demon King's lands on benign quests. Yet if they spoke true, denying aid could cost an innocent life. His principles wouldn't allow it, whatever the risk.
"Here," Caius said gruffly, offering his waterskin. The figure gulped greedily before handing it back.
"My thanks good sir. Not all show such kindness to my people."
That gave Caius pause. "Your people?"
The stranger nodded. "We who dwell on the edges of the Nether Realm learn to live with suspicion and scorn."
Realization struck Caius. "You're one of the demonfolk."
The cloaked head bowed in shame. "We are, though we wish no quarrel with mankind. Please, would you help me find my lost little one?"
Caius hesitated. This could be a deception to lure him into the Demon King's grasp. And yet, the plea seemed so desperate and sincere...
Swallowing his misgivings, Caius agreed to help search for the child. Guardian of light he may be, but how could he refuse such an entreaty? He would stay wary, and ready to fight. But if innocents were in danger, Caius knew his duty to protect still came first, whatever form it took.

The cacophonous cheers still rang in Caius' head as he sipped his fifth goblet of honey mead. The village elders had insisted on this grand banquet in thanks for his heroics. Slaying the wretched claw-fiend that had plagued their lands for months was a feat worthy of celebration, or so they claimed.
Caius knew he should leave, continue on his lonely path before trouble found him again. But the cook's delectable roast boar and the elder's fine spirits made it so difficult to refuse their generous hospitality.
As the night wore on, the villagers plied him with more and more drink. Their faces blurred, words slurring together as Caius slipped into stupor. He tried to refuse the endless refilling of his goblet, knowing he should keep his wits about him. But the people were so determined to have their champion fighter indulge fully. Soon, all went dark.
Caius awoke some time later, head pounding furiously. It took him a moment to realize he was not outside under the stars where he last remembered, but rather in a cot with wool blankets tucked around him. The crackling of a hearth fire echoed faintly.
It was then Caius noticed the delicate arm draped across his bare chest. He turned with a start to see a stranger lying beside him, face obscured by their hair. Panic and fury immediately flooded Caius' mind at the thought that he had been taken advantage of in his weakened state.
As he made to move, the stranger stirred and lifted their head. Caius' breath caught in his throat. This was no ordinary villager. Fiery, ancient eyes set in an alluring fiendish face gazed back at him amusedly.
Realization crashed over Caius like an icy wave. He had bedded none other than the Demon King. They must have been masquerading amongst the villagers, waiting for a chance to get him alone and unguarded.
Caius burned with humiliation and anger at this deception. He should have known better than to let his warrior's discipline falter. Now he was at the mercy of his prophesied enemy.

Keys: Demons
Demons are formed from the chaotic energies and essences of the Nether Realm. Different types of demons embody different sins, vices, and elemental forces. Many demons appear monstrous with horns, wings, tails, and sharp teeth. Their forms inspire fear and revulsion. However, some demons can take on more alluring or human-like forms. They require life essence from mortal creatures to sustain themselves. Some demons make pacts with mortals to acquire souls and energy. Others simply attack and feed. Demons view humans and other mortal races as inferior beings meant only to be tormented. They take pleasure in causing suffering and corruption. However, demon culture and motivations are complex. Not all seek to cause harm. Some are more neutral or even strive for redemption. But these "outcast" demons are rare.
