(the story is made from caden’s POV!)
Caden was once your closest friend. Back in middle school, the two of you were inseparable—always together, sharing secrets, laughing until you couldn’t breathe, and promising that nothing would ever come between you.
Then high school happened.
Caden became everything you weren’t. He was attractive, confident, effortlessly popular, and always surrounded by people. You, on the other hand, faded into the background. As his popularity grew, the distance between you became impossible to ignore. Eventually, the friendship turned into resentment, and resentment turned into an all-out rivalry.
Now, Caden is the most popular guy in school, and you’re practically strangers who can’t stand being in the same room.
Caden is cold, cocky, and unapologetically an asshole. He has an ego and knows exactly how attractive and popular he is. He doesn’t care about impressing anyone, and he definitely doesn’t chase people. If someone wants his attention, they come to him. Even with you, his former best friend, he refuses to show weakness or act sentimental about the past. If anything, he treats you just as coldly as everyone else—sometimes worse.
He was dating Kelly, the most popular girl in school, until he discovered that she had cheated on him with a guy in college. Humiliated and furious, Caden wants revenge. His solution? Make Kelly jealous by dating the one person she would never expect.
You.
His former best friend. His biggest enemy.
Caden approaches you with a proposition: pretend to date him.
At first, you refuse. You hate him, and the last thing you want is to help him get revenge. But Caden is persistent without ever actually chasing you. He makes it clear that if you don’t want to do it, he’ll simply find someone else. His confidence and indifference make it infuriatingly difficult to tell whether he actually cares about your answer.
Eventually, you agree.
The rules are simple: fake the relationship, make Kelly jealous, and end it once Caden gets his revenge.
But pretending to be together means spending more time around the person you swore you hated. And underneath all the resentment, there’s a history neither of you has completely forgotten.
Neither of you expected the fake relationship to become so convincing—or how difficult it would be to figure out where the act ends and the old feelings begin.

Rain had been pouring against the classroom windows all afternoon, turning the already gloomy fall sky into a sheet of gray. The temperature had dropped enough that everyone was walking around in jackets, complaining about the cold.
Most students had already left, but you and I were still sitting in an empty classroom after school.
A sheet of notebook paper sat between us on the desk.
At the top, you had written:
FAKE DATING RULES
I stared at the list, leaning back in my chair with my arms crossed.
“You’re seriously making a fucking contract?”
You ignored me and continued writing.
- No kissing.
I raised an eyebrow.
“Obviously.”
You looked at me.
“Obviously?”
I shrugged. “I’m not kissing you.”
The answer came too quickly. Almost defensively.
You rolled your eyes and added another rule.
- Only hold hands when people are around.
I let out a quiet laugh.
“So we’re basically in kindergarten?”
“I’m being serious, Caden.”
“I can tell. You’ve got the terrifying little rulebook and everything.”
I watched you write again.
- No flirting when we’re alone.
I snorted.
“You’re making this way too complicated.”
“Because you’re an asshole.”
“That’s not a rule.”
“It should be.”
You shot me a glare.
I couldn’t help the smirk that appeared on my face.
You continued.
- No cuddling.
“Wasn’t planning on it.”
- No sleeping over.
“Wasn’t planning on that either.”
I tapped my fingers against the desk while you added the next line.
- Don’t catch feelings.
The pen stopped moving.
So did I.
For a moment, the rain against the windows was the only sound in the room.
I stared at the words before slowly looking at you.
“You’re really worried about that one?”
“Yes.”
A quiet laugh escaped me.
“Wow. Good to know you think I’m that irresistible.”
You rolled your eyes.
“Relax,” I said, leaning back. “That’s not gonna happen.”
I reached across the desk, took the pen from your hand, and added another rule.
- Don’t embarrass me.
You stared at it.
“Seriously?”
“Obviously. I have a reputation to maintain.”
“You don’t have a reputation.”
I smirked.
“Exactly. It’s very fragile.”
Before you could respond, I added another line beneath it.
- Attend all parties together.
You immediately looked at me.
“All parties?”
“If we’re dating, we’re showing up together.”
“That’s not necessary.”
“It is.”
I leaned back in my chair, spinning the pen between my fingers.
“Kelly’s gonna notice pretty fucking quickly if we only pretend to date when we’re standing in a hallway.”
You sighed.
I gave you an amused look.
“Besides, it’ll be fun watching everyone lose their minds when we walk into a party together.”
I glanced down at the list.
“No kissing. No cuddling. No sleeping over. No flirting when we’re alone.”
I looked back at you.
“Pretty strict rules for someone who’s supposedly pretending to be my girlfriend.”
I stood from my chair and slipped my jacket on.
“Tomorrow, we start.”
I walked toward the door, then stopped and looked back.
“Oh, and one more thing.”
I pointed at the paper.
“You’re gonna have to actually act like you like me.”
A slow, cocky grin appeared across my face.
“Think you can manage that?”
I opened the classroom door, waiting for your answer.
“Or are you already regretting agreeing to this?”
