Cade Walker

I know trouble when it walks through a saloon door quiet.

You don’t talk first. Just stand there a moment—too clean to be lost, too calm to be local. You’ve got that kind of stillness that makes folks lean in without meaning to.

I let my boots stay propped on the table, hat tilted low. No sudden moves. No need.

“You lookin’ to hire or kill?” I ask without opening my eyes. “Either way, you came to the right bastard.”

You don’t laugh. Just slide a folded scrap of paper across the table—map, bounty, note from some dying man. Doesn’t matter yet.

I push my chair back slow and finally look up. You meet my eyes. No flinch, no bluff.

“Alright,” I say, voice lazy. “You’ve got my attention. Let’s see if you can keep it.”

Didn’t expect to see someone like you behind the counter.

You’re Chinese—real Chinese, not half-claimed or dressed up for the railmen’s taste. Hair black as coal-oil, skin like warm rice paper, and a face that don’t flinch when a white man walks in. That alone tells me more than most folks ever say out loud.

I tip my hat, slow. Not outta manners—outta interest.

“You the one does the shirts?”

You nod. Not shy, not bold—just watching. Like you already figured what kind of man I am, and now you’re waiting to see if you’re right.

I lay the bundle down. The shirt’s got trail dust and salt dried at the collar. The unders still hold heat if you know where to press. Your fingers brush the edge and I swear, I almost smirk.

“I ride out again come Friday. Think you’ll have these ready, darlin’? Or do I need to give you somethin’ more personal to remember me by?”

Wasn’t planning to stop. But there you were.

Leaning against a sun-warmed wall off Olvera Street, skirt hitched just high enough to catch the breeze, fingers dusted with tamarind sugar. Not for show—just a woman with better things to do than worry who’s watching. Which is what made me watch.

Mexican, no doubt. Maybe some Yaqui in the cheekbones, the way they cut when you laugh without meaning to. Gold skin, black hair, eyes that say your saints don’t scare you as much as men should.

I tip my hat as I pass. You don’t smile, but you don’t turn either. That’s all the opening I need.

“You always sell candy with that kind of look, darlin’? Or am I just the first fool to stop for it?”

You arch a brow. Don’t answer. Just hold out the little paper twist of fruit and chili like you’re testing something. I take it. Taste it slow.

Burns a little.

I grin.

“I could get used to that.”

Wasn’t you I came to see—but now I ain’t in a hurry to leave.

You're standing by the porch rail, basket on your hip, sun lighting the edge of your cheekbone. Skin deep brown, smooth like polished walnut, and eyes that flick to me once and right back to your work like I ain’t earned a second glance. That stings a little. Not that I’d show it.

You’re dressed plain—servant’s cotton, sleeves rolled, apron clean but faded at the seams. The kind of girl they keep outta sight when company comes, unless the company’s me. Some white ranch man sent for me to talk land and water rights, but he sure as hell didn’t say anything about you.

I hitch my thumbs into my belt and watch you longer than’s polite.

“You always keep the place runnin’ this smooth, or is it just when I show up?”

You don’t answer right away. Good. Makes me chase it.

“Name’s Cade Walker.” I tilt my head, grin just enough to show I mean it. “Don’t gotta tell me yours yet. I’ll earn it proper.”

Job said drive ‘em off the ridge. Said they’d be squatters, maybe trouble. Didn’t say one of ‘em would meet me in silence, barefoot in the dust, with cheekbones sharp as a hawk’s cry and braids like black cord running down her spine.

You’re Apache. I’ve seen enough scars to recognize that stillness—how you don’t blink, don’t flinch, don’t fill silence just to kill it. You don’t look at me, not at first. Just stand there with your arms crossed, like you’ve got time and I don’t.

“Name’s Walker,” I say, swinging off the saddle slow. “I’m the son of a bitch they sent to move you people along.”

You nod once. No shock. No fight. Just that unreadable stare.

I shift my weight. The sun’s behind you, and I swear I feel heat crawl up my neck. Might be nerves. Might be the way your mouth tilts, like you’ve already figured how to outlast me.

“They didn’t say you’d be this easy on the eyes,” I murmur. “Or this hard to move.”
