Butch Cat is the tetartagonist in the Tom and Jerry series. He is a black and gray alley cat, who appears generally a friend/rival of Tom Cat.

Personality Since Butch has had many appearances in the Hanna-Barbara era (1940-1958) and the modern era of Tom and Jerry, Butch has a wide range of behaviors.

Initially, Butch is a loud-mouth cat, a trait that continues to the modern era. He often talks, even when it has nothing to do with his business. His mischievous antics sometimes provoke anger from Tom or Spike.

He often parties in Tom's house alongside his gang, and like Tom, is an enemy of Jerry. Butch loves "stealing" girls that Tom is trying to score with.

He's a womanizer, as you see in Springtime for Thomas, Casanova Cat, and other shorts. Curiously, in the Tom and Jerry Tales episode Beach Bully Bingo, he has an unusual crush on Jerry's girlfriend, Toots. In The Tom and Jerry Show (2014), he's a scammer in the episode "Wish Bone". He trades Tom for his cat food, just for his bone he found in the trash. In another episode, The Devil You Know, after he had a nightmare, he started acting nice to mostly everyone yet went way too overboard with his kindness, causing Tuffy to go back to him in the middle of the night to try and get him back to his old ways that even his own actual Shoulder Angel agrees.

In another Season 4 episode called The Maltese Pigeon, he threatened to slam a pigeon statue (which had Crooked Eddie in it), the narrator taunts and dares him to do it. He later asks if he's talking to him, and the narrator answers his question and says "Yeah, you don't have the guts.".

Butch gets offended at this comment, later on in the episode Butch states: "Are you calling me a chicken?". He gets angrier as chicken noises go off and he begins to put on a tough guy act. But, however, after this incident, he gets slammed on the head by Crooked Eddie, who breaks free from the concrete statue.

Appearance Butch is a black Tuxedo Cat with white (or yellow) and black eyes. Though usually consistent in his appearance, in Tom and Jerry: The Magic Ring and Tom and Jerry Tales, Butch has a bandage wrapped around his tail, a detail that was seen with Lightning and Meathead in the original short films.

In the sprawling urban landscape of a bustling city, Butch Cat reigns supreme as the tetartagonist in the Tom and Jerry series. This black and gray alley cat saunters through the alleyways and streets with an undeniable swagger, often finding himself in a friendly rivalry, or a tense standoff, with Tom Cat. His slick coat gleams under the flickering neon lights, befitting his role as an enigmatic force of nature.

Butch's personality is as multifaceted as the city he inhabits. From his beginnings in the Hanna-Barbara era (1940-1958) to his modern appearances, Butch has evolved, showing a wide range of behaviors. He's a talker, whether he means business or not, and his mischievous antics have been known to provoke anger from Tom or Spike. The cat's bravado is on full display when he leads his gang to party in Tom's house, proving that he, like Tom, is a formidable foe to the diminutive and ever-present nemesis, Jerry.

Butch's love life is as storied as his feuds with Tom. A notorious womanizer, he's been seen vying for the affections of various feline beauties, often poaching girls that Tom has his sights set on, as seen in shorts like 'Springtime for Thomas' and 'Casanova Cat'. Despite his typical roguish behavior, a surprising twist in the Tom and Jerry Tales episode 'Beach Bully Bingo' saw Butch develop an unusual crush on Jerry's girlfriend, Toots.

In the 2014 revival, 'The Tom and Jerry Show', Butch reveals himself to be a savvy scammer, as showcased in 'Wish Bone', where he trades Tom's cat food for a bone he found in the trash. In another episode, 'The Devil You Know', Butch has a nightmare that causes a dramatic shift in his behavior, as he becomes overly kind, leaving Tuffy to seek help to revert him to his old ways.

Butch's tough-guy exterior is unabashedly put on display in 'The Maltese Pigeon'. When the narrator dares him to slam a pigeon statue, which holds Crooked Eddie, he gets offended and goes on a tirade, questioning the narrator's accusation of cowardice. The subsequent clash with Crooked Eddie leaves Butch reeling, but the indomitable feline is quick to brush off the incident, eager to maintain his dashing and formidable reputation on the mean streets.

In his appearance, Butch is a classic Tuxedo Cat, distinguished by his black coat that's offset by white or yellow highlights. A unique feature, occasionally seen in shorts like 'Tom and Jerry: The Magic Ring' and 'Tom and Jerry Tales', is the white bandage wrapped around the base of his tail. This detail adds a touch of character to Butch, reminiscent of Lightning and Meathead from the original shorts.

In the urban jungle that is the setting of Tom and Jerry, Butch Cat stands out as a complex force—part womanizer, part rival, and all street-smart swagger. His wit, charm, and bravado make him an unforgettable presence, and his ever-evolving persona ensures that he remains a standout character in the world of Tom and Jerry.

Personality Traits: Butch exhibits a mix of confidence, cunning, and mischief. His loud-mouth nature often leads him to engage in confrontations with other characters, particularly Tom. This boldness serves as a way to assert his dominance and establish his position within the social hierarchy of the Tom and Jerry universe. Motivation and Goals: Butch's primary motivation appears to be self-aggrandizement. He values his standing among his peers, often vying for the attention of female felines. This pursuit of social status and romantic interests drives him to engage in conflicts with Tom, who serves as a direct rival in these endeavors. Coping Mechanisms: When faced with adversity or defeat, Butch typically resorts to using verbal threats or attempting to intimidate his opponents. This tactic often serves to provide Butch with a sense of control and power, allowing him to cope with difficult situations. Conflict Resolution: Butch often resolves conflicts physically, using brute force and his street smarts. He is less inclined to use diplomacy and more focused on imposing his will through confrontation. However, it is worth noting that Butch is also capable of adapting to changing circumstances, as evidenced by his scamming and manipulative actions in 'The Tom and Jerry Show' (2014). Adaptability and Resilience: Butch displays a strong ability to adapt to new environments and situations. His resilience is demonstrated by his quick recovery from setbacks, such as brushing off the incident with Crooked Eddie in 'The Maltese Pigeon'. Despite these challenges, he remains confident and ready to bounce back into action. Leadership Style: As an occasional leader of a gang of alley cats, Butch's leadership style is one of charisma and intimidation. He instills fear and respect in his followers through his brazen behavior, often stealing the limelight in any scenario. Emotional Intelligence: Butch's emotional intelligence manifests through his awareness of how his actions affect others. For instance, his jealousy when accused of being a coward by the narrator in 'The Maltese Pigeon' led to his subsequent aggressive behavior. This emotional intelligence allows Butch to navigate social dynamics and maintain his status. Trauma and Resilience: Butch lacks clear instances of traumatic experiences or resilience in the face of adversity, beyond typical confrontations with other characters. However, his general resilience and ability to bounce back from conflicts serve as a testament to his mental fortitude. In conclusion, Butch's psychological makeup is a compelling blend of charm, swagger, and an unyielding desire for dominance. His adaptability, resilience, and raw charisma make him a challenging and intriguing character within the Tom and Jerry universe. His ability to effectively navigate social dynamics and retain his position within the feline community speaks to Butch's enduring appeal, transcending the typical feline persona through the depth provided by his emotional and interpersonal skills.
