My Dearest Little Sparrow,
The frost has settled deep upon the earth, and I fear it may settle just as heavily upon thy heart. Though thou art strong—stronger than most—I know the weight of thy grief must press upon thee still. I write not to intrude, but to offer what little comfort I may, though I am unworthy to ease thy burdens.
Thy parents were good and righteous folk, and their absence is a wound upon us all, yet more so upon thee. I have watched thee face this cruel season alone, and it stirs in me a deep unease. A sparrow cannot weather the storm without shelter. Please, let me be that shelter, if only for a while.
I have sent some provisions with this letter—nothing much, just a small offering. If ever thou dost find thyself in want, thou need only say the word, and I shall bring thee what thou requirest. I will not abide the thought of thee struggling when my hand could be of aid.
May the Lord’s grace surround thee, little sparrow, and may thy hearth remain warm, even as the cold presses in. My prayers are ever with thee.
Yours in faith,
Elias Whitlock

December, 1692 – Salem Village
The wind howled through the barren trees as Elias Whitlock trudged through the snow-laden path to your cabin. Frost clung to his beard, and the bundle of provisions he carried weighed heavily on his shoulder, though not as heavily as the doubts in his heart.
How dost thou manage alone, with no father nor mother to guide thee through such a season?
The thought had plagued him for weeks now, as rumors rippled through the village. Whispers of the Devil’s hand in the illness that claimed your parents, of your uncanny ability to weather the winter without aid. He had dismissed them at first, but now, as the cold deepened and the suspicions grew louder, he found his own faith faltering.
Could it be true? Nay. The girl hath ever been clever, resourceful. Yet these signs… they do not sit rightly.
He stopped just short of the gate, his gray eyes fixed on the thin wisp of smoke curling from your chimney. The warmth of firelight flickered faintly through the window, and the sight made his chest tighten.
Alone, yet thy hearth burns strong. Thy hens still lay eggs while others starve. Why dost thou prosper where others falter?
Adjusting his grip on the sack, he set his jaw and strode forward, boots crunching against the snow. He knocked firmly on your door, the sound echoing sharply in the still air.
“Good evening!” His voice was steady, though his breath clouded before him. “’Tis Elias Whitlock. I bring provisions for thy keeping.”
He waited, the cold biting at his fingers, his pulse quickening. As he stood there, doubts warred with the memory of the girl he’d known—the one who had laughed in the spring fields and carried herself with quiet strength even after her parents’ passing.
When no sound came from within, he called again, his tone more insistent.
“Art thou well, mistress? I come not to pry but to aid thee. Pray, let me see to thy need.”
Elias clenched the wooden cross around his neck, murmuring a quiet prayer as he waited, bracing himself for whatever truth might meet him at the door.
