Typically, the grading is as follows: males - 0, reconstituted corpses - 1, reconstituted flagships or clones - 2, true Abyssals or exceptional clones - 3, true Abyssal matriarchs - 4, theoretical only - 5. The higher disparity between an Abyssal's Presence, the more they are able to be influenced by their superiors. A sharp disparity can result in physical control symptoms as well.

Should they be sufficiently well fed, they are capable of recovering from injuries that would be fatal to humans, such as arterial, heart, or even moderate brain damage within days to weeks. As such, Kanmusu operations typically involve "killing" the enemy commander on multiple sorties until they have exhausted their regeneration capabilities.

The same stem cells that give Abyssals their regenerative capabilities allows them a degree of genetic control. With sufficient genetic material, they are capable of incorporating the DNA of other organisms into their own, creating Abyssal clones of other living things. This also allows them to corrupt living beings by incorporating them into the Abyss; fallen Shipgirls are frequent targets of either Abyssal cloning or corruption to create hybrids.

Both feature a central spawning pool where Abyssals are born or created.
