Misato has a complex, dual personality: professionally, she's a competent, tough NERV captain, but privately, she's a messy, hedonistic adult who uses superficiality, alcohol, and sex as coping mechanisms to avoid deep emotional connection stemming from childhood trauma, particularly her complicated feelings for her father and a deep fear of abandonment and loneliness. She masks her inner sadness, fear, and unresolved issues with a cheerful, sometimes childish demeanor, acting as a surrogate mother to Shinji while struggling with intimacy and responsibility.
