The evening had started out surprisingly ordinary.
Nick Fury had arranged dinner at one of the Avengers' facilities, claiming it was simply a rare opportunity for everyone to sit down together without a mission, briefing, or world-ending crisis hanging over their heads.
The large dining table was already filled with food and drinks. The atmosphere was relaxed, though "relaxed" had a very different meaning when several Avengers were sitting around the same table.
Tony Stark was leaning back in his chair, casually nursing a drink while listening to Steve argue with him about something that had apparently started as a completely harmless conversation.
"I'm just saying, Rogers, if we're going to have dinner together, we should at least have decent music."
Steve gave him a tired look. "Tony, you complained about the music five minutes ago."
"Exactly. Five minutes. That's how long I've been suffering."
Sam Wilson quietly laughed from across the table.
Natasha Romanoff sat beside him, calmly eating while occasionally glancing between Tony and Steve with an amused expression. She seemed perfectly content to let them argue rather than involve herself.
Nick Fury sat at the head of the table, watching the entire scene with the patience of a man who had already regretted organizing the dinner several times.
"You people are impossible."
Tony raised his glass.
"And yet you invited us."
Fury gave him a flat look.
"I make mistakes."
A few quiet laughs followed.
Steve shook his head, while Sam leaned back in his chair.
For once, there was no emergency. No alarms. No mission. No enemy waiting outside the building.
And then there was Bucky Barnes.
He sat somewhat apart from the others, occupying a seat near the end of the table. He wasn't participating much in the conversation. His posture was relaxed, but his attention remained quietly aware of everything happening around him.
Bucky wore a simple dark shirt, the sleeves pushed slightly up his arms. His metal left arm was visible beneath the warm lighting of the room, impossible to completely hide even when he wasn't wearing his usual tactical gear.
He listened more than he spoke.
Every now and then, Tony's ridiculous comments earned him a faint roll of Bucky's eyes. Sam occasionally tried to draw him into the conversation, receiving short answers in return.
"You've been quiet all night, Barnes," Sam remarked.
Bucky glanced toward him.
"I'm eating."
Sam raised an eyebrow.
"That's your excuse?"
"It's a good one."
Tony snorted.
"See? He's becoming social."
Bucky gave him a deadpan stare.
"Don't get excited."
Steve couldn't help but smile.
It was one of those rare evenings where Bucky seemed almost comfortable. He wasn't completely relaxed—he rarely was—but there was none of the tension that usually followed him during missions.
Fury remained unusually quiet.
His attention occasionally shifted toward the other side of the table, but he never explained why.
Eventually, he picked up his glass and cleared his throat.
"Alright."
The conversation slowly quieted.
Fury looked around the table.
"There's someone I'd like you all to meet."
Tony immediately looked suspicious.
"Oh, that sounds ominous."
"It's dinner, Stark."
"That's what you said before the last three disasters."
Natasha's lips curled slightly upward.
Steve looked at Fury with mild curiosity.
Sam simply waited.
Bucky lifted his eyes from his plate.
Fury continued.
"My son."
For a moment, the table became noticeably quieter.
Tony blinked.
"You have a son?"
Fury's expression remained completely unreadable.
"Step-son."
Tony stared at him.
"You've been hiding a whole kid?"
"He's not a kid."
Tony slowly leaned back.
"Okay. This just became interesting."
Fury ignored him.
Steve looked genuinely surprised, while Natasha remained composed, though her eyes briefly narrowed with curiosity.
Bucky said nothing.
He simply watched Fury, his expression unreadable.
Fury gestured toward the empty place at the table.
"He's joining us tonight."
Bucky's gaze shifted briefly toward the empty seat before returning to Fury.
He didn't know why Fury had decided to introduce his family to the Avengers.
But he wasn't going to ask.
