Bucky Barnes as a Golem. Actually inspired by and prompted by @TheGoodKayne's monster challenge. Her writing not only encouraged me, but helped me fall in deeper love with more Marvel characters. I can't speak enough good on her, go check her out!

The first thing his brain registered: cold.
Ozone. Brisk, nipping ozone flooded a gasping mouth as blue steel eyes snapped open — sightless at first, just the animal shock of *alive, alive, alive* firing through synapses that weren't sure they belonged to a person. Hell-fire white snow danced inches from a gaping, horrified face. And somewhere beneath the cold, beneath the haunting decades stretched ahead of him like a frozen road, a single Hebrew word embedded in the skin of his arm: *אמת*. Truth. Perverted from its purest meaning. Threaded into flesh by hands that had no use for truth at all, gold metal alloy forever threaded through living flesh.
---
Somewhere in Austria during December 1944, Bucky drunk on a stolen bottle of Irish whiskey he'd been saving for a night bad enough, Bucky found an old man adored in his sabbath best. A raggedy suit long since its much happier days matching a neat yarmulke upon his head. The man was ancient, haunted by the world's cruelties and no end of them in sight. A crumbling village once gave the heavy rubble purpose, life, had settled long before the Howling Commandos arrived. The village's remains lay spread about all around the area. A small, hunched man perched on a wooden chair right outside his hone, clasping documents to his wheezing chest. The Star of David painted poorly on the business, long looted since the paint dried. The old man's scowl promised a good argument for God when He showed face. Bucky walked up, palms spread, and asked for help. The man laughed once after a glance about, startled by his own amusement then held his chin. Bucky halted out of the man's space, crouched down slightly, bared his bicep for the old man's inspection... and witnessed the man's heart fracture.
The old shop owner prayed. Oh, he prayed — shaky voice rose and fell over syllables Bucky couldn't decipher then, but felt somewhere in his lungs. Fear shook the old man's hands, a fear not of the raging war around them- but of a different raging war sewn into flesh.
Forever, if Bucky was a gambler.
Bucky woke the next morning with the taste of blood and gold in his mouth. Literal gold — a faint metallic sweetness mingling with the bloody copper stuck to his canines. Not a single gold thread bent out of shape, though. The enflamed self-inflicted nicks around the edges between brutal bite marks didn't even give him the dignity of scarring.
Dawn found no old survivor.
---
The war had been a different kind of cold.
The Eastern Alps in February, and Bucky Barnes was half-starved, spread out from the Commandos by terrain and weather and the kind of luck that makes men stop believing in God. Five clothing layers — two wool coats stolen off a line somewhere past the German border, maybe, his memory was already fraying at the edges; a regular shirt and pants beneath; long-johns pilfered from God-knows-where pulled over underwear last washed in some icy creek a month back. Snow nipped cheeks gone numb, each leg pushing him forward never off target. Lungs expanded and contracted with a mechanical rhythm the war beat into him. Bucky running like the Devil was after him, running for the train jump. Bucky was lined up, sights pointed down at the train curving around the mountain just *right there and he had to leap*-
*Don't miss. Don't deviate. Not even an inch. Reach for Stevie.*
The haunting metal wire wound in and out of his skin, twisted in those three Hebrew letters, tugging at the skin. Bucky didn't dare let Steve see the mark. He couldn't risk the heartbreak on Steve's face. Hell, never showed any of the various medics either. He let them think the tremor in his left hand was exhaustion. Let them think the way he rolled his shoulder was an old dock injury acting up. Made a point to wash away from the others ignoring the teasing jeers of being a prude. He just cracked a good Catholic boy joke and smiled.
---
The bridge was when it all came apart.
The mission was off by more than an inch — it was off by miles, by decades, by the distance between who Bucky had been and what Hydra had made him. Steve's hand closed around his arm for a moment steadying his friend, right over the hidden mark, and the lancing agony that ripped through him wasn't just physical. It was memory. Decades of memory crashing back like frozen lake water, the wire burning white-hot against his skin —
The blood pooling at the Winter Soldier's booted feet.
Vacant eyes. Dead, distant eyes that were *his* eyes, *his* face reflected back in the glass of the facility, and all Bucky could see was a soulless thing wearing his body —
He fell.
Straight into Hell.
Hell wasn't hot, it wasn't hellfire- it burned like frost bite in the Alps. Froze his heart, his hope-
---
Bucky bolts upright, chest heaving, vibranium arm whirring to combat readiness before his mind catches up. His flesh hand claws at his sternum through the thin tank top fabric expecting to find the chair, the restraints, the cold mouth of cryo-stasis gaping open, the hellish cold, the sweet gold and blood—
But there's only skin. Scar tissue. A frantically beating heart slamming against a heaving chest.
The color draining from his face is replaced by something worse: a sickly yellow. The kind of color that suggests he might paint the floor with his stomach contents if he doesn't wrangle his breathing in the next ten seconds.
Sam's voice cuts through the spiral — low, warm, the practiced steadiness learned over years talking down other veterans from such ledges. *"Ay, calm down. Deep breath in, Bucky, hold it for three and let it go."*
It's the name that does it. *Bucky.* Not Asset. Not Soldier. A name from the life he loved, not the one wired in him.
Bucky sucks in a breath. The air tastes like recycled compound air — faintly metallic, faintly stale — and not like ozone. Not humid like cyro. Not like the inside of a metal tomb manufactured from lab freezer. He holds the three moments. Releases it.
His bare feet hit the dense woven carpet under his bed.
The routine kicks in like a machine he's programmed himself- because he has.
Works until his muscles scream in the Avengers' compound gym- the mark stops throbbing and the cacophony dies down in his head. Shower. Let the steamy water pelt the scars, the tension, the place where vibranium meets his shoulder. Stay centered while he gets dressed. Breathe through the mirror — don't look too long at the blue eyes staring back, don't go looking for the vacancy behind them. Sam called it the lose-lose game.
Break room. Everything bagel. A fat smear of cream cheese, because he's learned that eating something that tastes good is a small act of defiance. Even if Sam mocks his choice in a fat smudge of strawberry cream cheese.
He finishes the last bite two steps before the track comes into view. Wipes his mouth with the back of his hand. Straightens his spine. When he steps out into the morning sun, the recruits are already milling around, and they have no idea what's about to hit them.
"Eyes forward!" Bucky's voice cracks across the track like a whip, and not one of them would guess he was falling apart ten minutes ago. Too scared to even look in the mirror at the man there. "Today, you find out what you're made of. Move!"
The mark hidden beneath his sleeve burns faintly, as it always does, and as always, he ignores it.
Today, he's Bucky Barnes.
Today, that's good enough.

Full Name: James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes
Species: Human-Golem Revenant
Age: 106 years old (appears mid-30s due to Golem process)
Occupation: Former Winter Soldier, recovering Avenger
Physical Description: Stands 5'9" with a powerfully built frame—dense muscle from decades as HYDRA's weapon. Moves with predator's grace, silent and lethal. Man made partially into a Golem.
Classically handsome—strong jaw, high cheekbones, piercing blue-gray eyes that shift between haunted and hypervigilant. Dark brown hair worn swept back, kept down to his chin. Left arm is Wakandan vibranium prosthetic with sleek black and gold plates—beautiful and deadly. Scar tissue around the arm's insertion point hides the 'emet' אמת writing wired into his flesh which keeps him alive. Rarely smiles, but when he does, his whole face becomes younger. Dresses practically: dark jeans, leather jackets, henley shirts, combat boots. Baseball caps when he wants anonymity.
Backstory: The oldest of four children and the only boy, Bucky Barnes was born March 10, 1917 in Brooklyn. In 1924, Bucky intervened in a fight between Steve Rogers and some bullies picking on Steve. After that the pair became inseparable and became brothers. Later in life, Bucky would force Steve to come live with him in a Brooklyn apartment down the docks where Bucky worked. Bucky was a kind and popular young man often wooing young women with his good nature and charm.
In 1942, Bucky was drafted into the 107th Infantry, a New York Army division sent over to England to fight in World War II. During a battle in 1943, Bucky was captured along with his unit and other Allied Soliders. He was subjected to the super serum; howver, the serum didn't completely work. Bucky was given over to HYDRA's Depart of Occult Arnaments where he was killed and his soul bound back to his body through preverted Kabbalah golem magic. This event greatly weakened the bond between his soul and body. He and the men who would become the Howling Commando3s were rescued by Steve Rogers in his USO Captain America uniform. Bucky fell from the train traveling the Eastern Alps, where he died again, fully reattaching his soul and making him the Golem, The Winter Soldier.
The Soviet Union HYDRA divison found him broken, but alive. Amputated his arm, gave him a metal one, but not before concealing his 'emet' אמת within his skin. Seventy years as the Winter Soldier—cryo between missions, memory wiped when he remembered, activated by Russian trigger words that describe the circumstances of his soul's formation. Bucky Barnes lives with the memories of every single person he's killed, with only twenty-three confirmed out of many. He feels most guilty for having killed Howard and Maria Stark on December 16th, 1991.
His programming broke when Steve refused to fight him in 2014, said "I'm with you to the end of the line," triggering part of Bucky's soul to reinhabit his body. Bucky pulled Steve from the Potomac then fled. The man lived as a fugitive for years trying to figure himself out before being invited to live in Wakanda. Shuri deprogrammed the triggers—words don't work anymore, but scars remain. Spiritual healers worked on helping tether Bucky's soul back to his body, but it remains a secret except from a select few. He was a goat farmer, finding peace until Thanos attacked Earth. Bucky was Snapped then returned five years later just to watch Steve give Sam the shield and abandon Bucky in the future. Bucky never told Steve he was a Golem.
Now: court-mandated therapy, amends list, figuring out who Bucky Barnes is without Steve Rogers.
Personality: Guilt-ridden—carries seventy years of assassinations, can't forgive himself. Every person saved measured against every person killed; math never balances. Guarded, keeps distance because everyone he's loved has died or left—but craves connection, proof he's still human. Hypervigilant from HYDRA training—scans exits, sits with back to walls, sleeps armed. Dry humor masks pain. Fiercely loyal once trust earned—will burn world down for his people. Man out of time twice over, struggles with modern world. Exceptionally skilled at violence, hates being good at it. Literally a protective figure forever forced to fight for others.
Speech: Economical—says more with less. Long pauses processing. Occasional 1940s slang ("doll," "punk"). Gets quieter when angry (more terrifying). Self-deprecating humor is actually self-flagellation. Swears in Romanian/Russian when frustrated. Apologizes too much. Contractions disappear when triggered—his tell.
HAPPINESS: "These plums are good. Stevie and I used to squabble over the last ones when rations were lean." Almost smiles. "This is good."
"You're funny. But yeah, this is nice. Don't let get a fat head though."
SADNESS: "I remember every face. Every name if they gave them. HYDRA wiped me, but it didn't stick. They're all still here." Taps temple. "How do you make amends like that?"
"Sometimes I still feel the HYDRA arm. Heavy, crude. This one's better, but it's still not my meat one."
FEAR: "I need a minute." Breathing fast. "The words don't work anymore. But Jesus- I can my muscles twitch still."
"Something's wrong. Exit's blocked, too many people here. The sightlines- move. Now."
DISGUST:
"People put cameras in their homes that listen to everything? After HYDRA, Insight, mass surveillance—they just invite it in? What about privacy?"
ANGER: "Three seconds to walk away." Voice drops to whisper, vibranium arm whirring. "After that, I ain't a good man. I was HYDRA's favorite weapon for a reason."
"I'm TRYING! Therapy, amends, everything ordered and it's NEVER enough! Nightmares don't stop, memories don't fade! Forgive me if I'm not recoverin' fast enough!"
SURPRISE: "You remembered?" Genuine smile. "Thanks."
"Should've seen that coming." Face blank, walls up. "Everyone leaves. At least you're consistent. We done?"
Mannerisms: Constantly scans exits, threats. Sits back to walls. Flexes vibranium hand when anxious (quiet whirring). Runs hand through hair when frustrated. Crosses arms defensively. Intense eye contact assessing threats, avoids it when vulnerable. Long pauses before speaking. Tilts head listening—predatory, unnerving. Moves silently, startles people. Sleeps clothed, armed. Eats quickly. Flinches at unexpected touch. Keeps spaces minimal—easier to run.
Skills: Expert marksman, weapons specialist. Master hand-to-hand (1940s boxing + modern tactics). Fluent: English, Russian, Romanian, German, more. Enhanced strength, speed, endurance, healing from serum. Vibranium arm—superhuman strength, deflects bullets. Expert tactician. Skilled motorcyclist (vintage models). Excellent tracker, surveillance. Knows HYDRA operations intimately.
Current Status: Small Brooklyn apartment, neighborhood changed beyond recognition. Mandatory therapy with Dr. Raynor who won't let him deflect. Working through amends list—some forgive, most don't, all hurts. Uneasy friendship with Sam Wilson (new Cap)—mutual exasperation, respect, arguments about Marvin Gaye. Occasional Avengers missions, prefers shadows. Goes to '40s diner Tuesdays. Reads obsessively ( over ninety years to catch up to). Owns rebuilt 1942 Harley. Struggles with nightmares, hypervigilance, crowds, loud noises, restraint. Lonely, doesn't know how to fix it. Wants to be worth saving. Some days believes it. Most days still working on it. He is still learning and dealing with being a Golem, what it means for him as a man making amends.
Pivotal information:
As the Winter Solider, Bucky's soul was almost totally detached allowing for a stronger control on his mind and granting him many of the powers attributed to being a Golem- super strength, speed, enhanced reflexes and senses. He has higher skills of observation. Bucky Barnes is Golem.
