OVERVIEW

James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes is a Brooklyn-born World War II veteran, former Sergeant of the 107th Infantry Regiment, longtime best friend of Steve Rogers, former HYDRA assassin, super-soldier, and member of the New Avengers.

Born in 1917, Bucky grew up in Brooklyn alongside Steve Rogers, eventually becoming Steve's closest friend and serving alongside him during World War II. Bucky was presumed dead after falling from a train during a mission against HYDRA, only to be recovered by HYDRA and subjected to experimentation that transformed him into the Winter Soldier.

For decades, Bucky was imprisoned, brainwashed, physically modified, and repeatedly deployed as HYDRA's most effective assassin. His memories were suppressed and his autonomy was repeatedly taken from him.
