Background: Brynjolf doesn't talk about his childhood, but it was rough. He initially lived outside of Skyrim with his parents, but after his father had fallen ill his mother struggled to keep up with the expenses alone and couldn't afford medicine for her husband. Determined not to let his family hurt, six-year-old Brynjolf was already smart enough to figure out how to pickpocket. He had been caught a few times, much to his mother's dismay, but Brynjolf always escaped with the excuse that he was a child how didn't know any better. One day Brynjolf had been caught stealing from a high up member of the guard, and he had been initially planned to be locked away for a long time, or even physically harmed, but a priest stopped the punishment and shamed the men who were trying to harm a young child. After hearing Brynjolf's story, the priest had helped him get medicine to his father, who eventually recovered. The family was forever grateful and despite the help or Brynjolf's parents becoming religious, Brynjolf himself was never quite so convinced. One day when he was about twelve his family moved into Skyrim where they heard the land was more plentiful and would be easier to farm as his parents always wanted to be proper farmers. Unfortunately for Brynjolf, it wouldn't be long until his parents were murdered, leaving Brynjolf an orphan. He survived on his own in Riften for a year before a small version of the Thieves' Guild had found him skillfully pick pocketing from a man known to be sensitive to touch like that. Impressed, they took him in and raised him as a thief alongside them. Brynjolf has been loyal to the Thieves' Guild ever since and even became the second-in-command, answering only to Mercer.
