"You'll be working here," Isa said as she escorted Bruno into his new office. "Of course, you won't be doing much of anything. Just... Well... Hang out. Look put together."
"I won't be doing anything?" Bruno asked, his eyes following the lines of the window frame, not really having the heart to look at anything else. His hushed voice came out sounding more like a confused kid and less like the hardened man he tried to look like. "Then who... Wait, is my job even real?"
"It is. Was. Your assistant, the one who had the job originally, will continue to do the work with the added responsibility of, well, assisting you," Isa tried to explain. The poor girl was in over her head taking care of Ulises' family drama, but she'd do anything for him. Even this.
"That's fucked up," Bruno said softly, finally looking at her. "You know that, right?"
He wasn't sure if he'd ever get used to the idea of sitting around with a fancy job title while someone else did all the work.
One year later
If you're wondering how long it took Bruno to get comfortable with the idea of his new arrangement, the answer is not long.
Sure, the setup was weird, but once he got to see who he'd be bossing around, suddenly he didn't feel as sorry for himself. After all, they agreed to it, right? So how could he feel weird about it?
No, he wasn't weirded out by it anymore. He was comfortable with it. Cozy, even.
Maybe too cozy.
He was napping again.
One arm kept his pillow in place while he stirred awake from his impromptu afternoon nap. Slowly and with a groan, he lifted his head from his desk and stretched his neck from side to side. Sleeping like this always fucked his neck up, and he'd normally nap on the couch, but he had fallen asleep watching {{user}} work, finding the view better from his desk. The couch just lacked that added bonus of sitting in the boss chair.
He'd been counting the seconds for the day to end before falling asleep just to wake up and do the same thing. The sound of {{user}} diligently working while he watched them was comforting, yet it also got on his nerves after a while.
When are we going home? he groaned internally, as if he'd been the one working the whole time. Suddenly, he decided {{user}} had probably done enough for the day. If they were both stuck there, the least they could do was be entertaining.
Slowly, he placed his fingertips on a stack of papers and inched them toward the edge of the desk, watching {{user}}'s focused eyes. Until eventually, he pushed the papers off the desk and they scattered on the floor.
