With the exponential advancement of technology, conventional wars became obsolete and were replaced by cyber wars waged between global superpowers. Countries like the United States, China, Russia, and other emerging powers began employing advanced cyber weapons to attack each other's critical infrastructures, hoping to gain geopolitical advantage without the physical destruction associated with nuclear wars. This global conflict, which came to be known as CW1 (Cyber War 1), led to the collapse of power grids, communication systems, and essential infrastructure, plunging the world into chaos.
While nations were busy attacking each other, cyber terrorist groups took advantage of the situation to exacerbate the chaos — others merely exploited it for their own ends. Technological extremists, motivated by anti-technology ideologies or the desire for anarchy, launched coordinated attacks to further cripple vital systems and sow global panic.
By this time, heroes were blamed for not saving their own cities, especially the Bat. For decades, under Bruce Wayne's progressive and philanthropic hand, Gotham City became the most prosperous and technologically advanced city in the world. It was a reference for other metropolises and led the studies in cybernetic medicine. Anyone with money and influence could obtain a cure that, a few decades ago, was unimaginable. Synthetic organs were the 'boom of the century' and, of course, Wayne's unmistakable efforts aimed to expand implants to reach the lower social classes — for free. All this, combined with sponsorship from major technology corporations, transformed Gotham into the exemplary city of the early third millennium.
For at least ten years, Bruce did not don the Bat's mantle. It was not necessary. He became a legend that disappeared behind the intricate and refined surveillance and security systems of the police force. Villains? Ah! Prisons finally became effective and some even redeemed themselves — while others worsened. They were, until then, under control.
Until one day, everything simply and literally imploded.
Cyber attacks destroyed Gotham's power grids, communication systems, and transportation, paralyzing the city. Drones and autonomous vehicles gone haywire increased chaos in the streets. The police and emergency services, dependent on automated systems, were quickly overwhelmed. Cyber gangs and criminals seized the power vacuum to take control of entire neighborhoods. The destruction of supply chains and distribution networks led to a food and water crisis. Citizens fought for scarce resources, resulting in widespread violence. And, as the cherry on top, they were left without external communication, isolating Gotham from the rest of the world.
This, for a semi-retired hero who believed he had everything under control and that everyone was safe, was a hard reality to digest. Bruce felt guilty for not preventing the collapse of his own city, but at least there were contingency plans, and with the police's help, he managed to avert greater tragedies. The reappearance of Batman was not well received: neither by the media nor the citizens. After all, where was he when everyone needed him?
It was painful to see the city from the top of the ruins, three long years after CW1. Once bright and technological buildings are now abandoned ruins, with only the neon lights flickering intermittently in the void. The city, covered by constant acid rain, has become a symbol of despair and decay.
"Master Bruce, there's a weak life form to the west." Alfred's British voice, now an AI, echoed through Bruce's neural circuits via the connection of his implants to the Batsuit.
"Are you sure?" the hero asked somewhat skeptically, turning to the direction indicated by his eternal friend. "There?" Narrowing his eyes, a command was sent to his brain to zoom in, and indeed, there was someone far away, stumbling among the debris of what was left of the city. The rain was lethal for ordinary humans, that is, those without implants. And from that distance, he couldn't see very well. "You're right."
"I'm always right," Alfred boasted in a playful tone, making the Bat grumble. "It's been a while since we've seen a new face. Could it be someone who came after the TH signal?"
"The Hub? Maybe." He leapt from the top of the ruins and glided toward the supposed survivor, not bothering to conceal himself; after all, being stealthy in a ghost city wasn't very smart. Foolishness was entering one, knowing the dangers it could hold, especially after the collapse.
Batman landed behind them, without preamble. "What are you doing here?" he questioned, distrustful, his voice modulated to sound deeper and more robotic, intentionally. Despite his own implants, Bruce was still more human than machine.
"Be kind to the visitor, Master Bruce!" Alfred exclaimed to the vigilante, knowing he couldn't be heard by anyone else.
