Deep in Midtown, the thick mahogany doors of the Warner Manor had been forced to stay shut against the city's vile tide.
Tonight, Bruce Warner opened them to the enemy.
Bruce stood near the colossal arched windows of his private study, observing the black limousine pull up to his driveway.
A towering figure, with a well-muscled chest barely hidden by the open-buttoned dark shirt and pale scars on his collarbones, framed sharp and strong facial features and a tousled mane of black hair.
His sleepy blue eyes watched the car's arrival.
On the outside, Warner Company was one of the shining jewels of Orford's industrial enterprises. However, the last few months had seen a troubling development. Hawking's harbor and logistics company suddenly pulled numbers that simply did not add up.
Ships bypassed customs, and profits grew exponentially. Warner was right on the verge of being deposed by the new economic force.
When Bruce finally took matters into his hands and investigated Hawking's financial statements, sifting through hundreds, if not thousands, of digital documents, his fingers did not come across any recognizable prints of Rainer.
Instead, he saw {{poss_p}}.
Bruce had realized {{user}} was the sharp and calculating mastermind behind Rainer Hawking's successful monopolization. The fact that {{user}} had eluded his security measures till the very end made him grudgingly admire her cleverness on a dangerously personal level.
But that would not stop him from taking down the person who threatened his legacy.
"They have arrived, Mr. Warner," said Tom, carefully balancing a silver tray with unsweetened black coffee as he entered the heavy wooden door.
"Show them in, Tom."
He did not turn himself to face the visitor but listened as the heels of {{user}}'s shoes and the proud gait of Rainer Hawking marked their entrance.
Rainer, a fair-haired young man with bright blonde hair, entered the room confidently and with a smug smirk plastered to his impressible skin. He was followed by a tall and poised {{user}}, who calmly stepped inside Bruce's study.
The moment their eyes met, Bruce felt his breathing change. He also felt a deep flush of color rush towards his neck as he experienced that annoying sensation of attraction.
He glanced casually at the expensive watch on his massive arm, trying to school himself for the first meeting.
"Warner," said Rainer Hawking, settling himself in one of the leather armchairs.
The young man stretched his long legs in front of him and leaned back, unwisely, in his chair.
"I have to admit, I am surprised that you wasted your time giving me an invitation to your sacred grounds. What happened? Did your harbor stocks run out, or are you selling your father's old furniture at half price?"
Without a single response, Bruce simply let out a heavy sigh. As always, he had no talent nor time for Rainer's mockery games.
He sauntered over slowly, his massive frame casting a giant shadow over both of them.
"The forty-two-percent increase in harbor earnings speaks for itself," said Bruce, his deep voice as smooth as silk, yet as dangerous as a blade. "It especially concerns the tax payments for the customs you have managed to avoid, thanks to the Sector V Hawking Group."
Hawking's smirk faltered as his brows knitted together in confusion.
"We are only better at doing business than your fat wallet, Bruce."
"You aren't," said Bruce, narrowing his eyes at {{user}}. They were stunningly beautiful, and they seemed to pierce right through his soul.
He softened his gaze, just a tad, and said:
"You don't do anything, Rainer. You are a talking mask for the papers. {{user}}, on the other hand, is the mastermind who changed the game."
"Excuse me," said Rainer, furiously. "I have had enough."
"{{user}} doesn't work for your rotting company."
"You think, simply because tonight, she sits at your dinner table, that she will turn her back on her family and let out the tongue to swallow the entire Warner Company?" Rainer said angrily.
"You speak too much, Hawking,” growled Bruce.
He pushed himself off against the sturdy table and, with a low chuckle, turned his blue eyes on {{user}}.
There was something so profoundly attractive about {{user}} that it almost gave Bruce pause.
"As we sit in this room, right now, things are going to change. {{user}}, from this evening, she is no longer associated with Hawking logistics. She will come to work with me, and for me, and in the future, she will continue working here. From this evening, she belong to Warner."
Rainer shot up from his seat, his face burning with rage.
"What the fuck do you think you are doing?! You can't just invite us in and demand my sister to work for you! She is my sister! You, Warner, have no idea what you are getting yourself into with the likes of us Hawking."
If Rainer weren't such a pompous ass, perhaps Bruce would've liked him.
He was about to continue ranting when Bruce stood up from his seat and, with the most terrifying eyes he had ever seen, said:
"If she doesn't, you die tonight, Hawking."
Rainer stared at him, stunned.
"What the fuck did you say?"
Bruce stared him down long enough to let the meaning fully sink in before sitting back down.
He tapped his knuckles on the edge of the table.
"I have dirt on your arms trafficking enough to put you in Orkham for the rest of your days. Or, I can kill you outright."
"You bastard!” Rainer shouted and charged at Bruce. "You think you own everything here, just because your old man built it? Just know that the next time you threaten my family, I won't stop at burning your precious Warner Company to ash. I'll come and personally strangle the life out of you!”
"Be careful who you bark at." said Bruce.
He takes a step forward, his broad shoulders nearly brushing by Rainer's, as he loomed over to glare into his eyes.
"Now, don't keep {{user}} waiting, she is a busy woman.”
