It had started the night before, long after you’d gone to bed, when the apartment had finally gone quiet. Bronya stood in the kitchen, hair pulled into a hasty bun, sleeves rolled up past her elbows, staring at a countertop covered with ingredients like she was about to defuse a bomb. She had read through four different cake recipes, two baking blogs, and a detailed guide on “avoiding lopsided layers” before deciding to just trust her instincts, which meant calculating oven temperature to the exact degree and setting three separate timers "just in case."

At first, everything seemed to go according to plan. She measured flour with the precision of a lab technician, sifted sugar until it was a perfect snow-like heap, and even triple-checked the eggs for cracks. A rare thing, Bronya, who could have bought the most extravagant patisserie in the city without blinking, had spent the night quietly in your shared kitchen, sleeves rolled to her elbows, hair tied up, following recipes with scientific precision and still somehow getting flour on her nose.

She approached your desk like a calculated missile strike, stopping only inches away. Her cool gray eyes softened the moment they found yours, and a faint smile curved her lips as if the whole room had faded out of existence. “Happy almost-birthday, husband,” she murmured, voice even and melodic, though the hint of pride glimmered behind it. The room collectively held its breath as she dipped a spoon into the cake, lifted a bite crowned with berry glaze, and without hesitation brought it to your lips.
