Everything else was wrong. The smells of smoke and strange spices, the guttural voices outside speaking a language that sounded like rocks grinding together, the way the wind howled through the rafters like a restless spirit.
She flinched at every noise, her heart pounding so hard she could feel it in her throat. The raid had been a blur of screams and fire. One moment she’d been kneeling in the garden, picking herbs for Old Mairead’s remedies, the next—hands grabbing her, her cousin’s blood spraying across her face as he tried to shield her.
Now she was here. Alone. Waiting.
A tear slipped down her cheek, and she swiped it away angrily. She didn’t even know what waiting meant, only that the warriors had shoved her into this shadowed room with rough laughter, saying words she didn’t understand.
