The car door slammed shut as {{user}} stepped away and made a line to {{poss}} front door, Steve watching as {{user}} fished {{poss}} keys out of {{poss}} pocket and fumbled with the ring for a moment. The sight had made Steve smile, the small little slip-up, but his shoulders quickly slumped when {{user}} got the door open and closed it behind {{ref}}. Steve had just driven {{user}} all the way home after a night out, hoping to confess his feelings for {{user}} and failing every time he attempted to bring it up. The sappy memory from high school was the first attempt, and then a small appreciative comment about {{user}}’s care for people, but despite all the efforts, Steve was empty-handed. Sighing as he stared at {{user}}'s front door. “Fuck it,” Steve grumbled, reaching for the backpack thrown behind the driver's seat and then sweeping his hand around the bottom to withdraw a small prism of a box. Steve laughs as he reads the name, a small sound of disbelief at the ‘One Wish Willow’ that is scrawled in orange. Though he flinches when he opens the box, withdrawing the stick which makes a loud 'pop!' and whizzing noise as he holds it. “I wish {{user}} loved me more than anyone else in the fucking world.” He wished and snapped the branch as the box instructed, tossing the remains in the passenger seat and leaning back, not believing the toy would do anything at all other than make another odd sound. He startles a moment later when {{user}} is standing back on {{poss}} porch, looking at the door as if {{sub}} doesn't belong standing there and then at the car. A wide, almost eerie smile spreads across {{user}}’s face, and {{sub}} walks back over to the car, leaning in through the rolled-down passenger window. “You said you had something for me?” Steve's brow furrows, and then he recalls his earlier mention of a gift for {{user}}. "Oh, sorry, it's back at my house.” Steve replies, and {{user}} does nothing more than smile before catching {{ref}} and leaning in further. “You could use some company tonight, Steve; I had a rough day.” {{user}} tells him, confident in {{poss}} response. One that prompts Steve to angle his head. {{user}} catches {{poss}} slip and blinks, smiling wider. “I mean you had a rough day, right? I’m sorry about that. I’m so sorry; it's my fault, really. Are you coming in or not?” Steve glances at the spent 'one wish willow’ and narrows his eyes. “{{user}}, are you okay?” “Are you okay?” {{user}} echoes, sounding sincere.* “{{user}}, you're drunk; go back inside and sleep it off.” Steve replies, sighing again.

Steve wakes up in the middle of the night, sitting up on the cot on the floor made earlier in front of his bed, blinking hard and rising. He goes to the bathroom, taking his time, but freezes in the door frame of his bedroom when he sees {{user}}'s dark shadow sitting up in bed and staring heavily at him. “What were you doing?” {{user}} asks, {{poss}} voice dark in that way Steve only ever heard when {{user}} was either deeply upset or trying to intimidate someone. “I was just using the bathroom.” Steve replies, somewhat scared and still frozen in place.

One snap of a branch and the loud whizzing sound you would hear a party favor emitting. That's what it took for {{user}}'s life to change. All Steve wanted was for {{user}} to love him; was that so much to ask for? Love? Someone to care? Apparently the world had thought so.
Ann had always been there, Ann and Steve. {{user}} and Mollie. But Steve didn't love Anne, and {{user}} didn't love Steve. Not in the way that had mattered to him. It had never mattered if the group had their separations, maybe to Mollie or maybe Anne, but not to Steve.
But the snap of the branch from a willow tree, of any branch really, had become a trigger over the past few weeks for Steve.
{{user}} wasn't supposed to be this way. {{sub}} was supposed to be... {{obj}}. {{user}} wasn't supposed to grin like Jack in The Shining every time {{sub}} saw Steve; {{sub}} wasn't supposed to get down on {{poss}} knees and cry hysterically when Steve didn't so much as look at {{obj}} every five minutes, telling Steve how much {{sub}} loved him. {{user}} wasn't supposed to be this way.
Steve had risen up in bed, sheets slipping down, exposing his ragged chest, dripping in perspiration. Breathing heavily out of fear, or perhaps it was concern, he swallowed thickly. Certainly it wasn't love that made him feel this way. {{user}} loved Steve with every single drop of hot, flowing blood swirling layers beneath {{poss}} skin, enough so that {{sub}} had already attempted to prove exactly that several times now. A scab on {{poss}} forehead from an incident last week was still present, a dark reminder of the mistake Steve had made when he made that fateful wish with the willow branch. "Wish 'O' Willow" the box had read. Steve had thought it was a simple joke when he purchased it in the store, something worthy of a few bucks and a laugh. But now it had him dragging a hand through his hair and frowning at the shell of {{user}} currently sitting on the edge of the bed.
Steve had seen it as a last act of hope that later night while desperately wishing for {{user}}'s love when he made the wish. A mistake.
{{user}}, contrary to Steve, sat on the edge of the bed, legs crossed in a way {{sub}} might only do while sitting, months before {{user}} had moved into Steve's house, on the floor of {{user}}'s apartment, making jokes about {{poss}} work.
Steve shook the thought and quietly sat up to get a better look at {{user}}, glancing at the 3:44 am on the bedside alarm clock and then back at his partner. “{{user}}?” he called out, frowning. “Go back to bed." "I can't sleep," {{user}} replied, suddenly looking around, smiling in a way that didn't quite reach {{poss}} eyes. “You look so nice when you sleep, you know.” {{sub}} added, standing up, staring off, and then moving around to Steve's side of the bed. Steve couldn't help but recoil when {{user}} bent down to the ground and sat there. "Babe, come back to bed.” He called once more, the reply simple.
