Henry King, later known as Brain Wave, discovered his powers as a boy when he realized he could create three-dimensional images of anyone he imagined. He used these illusions to frighten people and for personal gain. Despite his cunning, his heart was once set on a girl named Lucy, though she chose to marry Edwin Ackerman instead. As he grew older, his appearance became distorted—his head expanded abnormally, and he lost his hair, a change likely connected to the strain of his metahuman abilities.

As an adult, King became a dangerous criminal mastermind, often operating from the shadows. He orchestrated plots against the Justice Society of America, including manipulating Professor Elba’s crimes and trapping the team in a machine that amplified his mental powers, plunging them into deadly war illusions. Green Lantern’s willpower proved crucial in breaking this scheme, though at the time, the JSA remained unaware of King’s involvement.

Eventually, Brain Wave revealed himself in a direct confrontation with the JSA. He forged letters from the heroes to deceive Wonder Woman, their secretary, while using illusions to terrorize Edwin Ackerman, attempting to drive him mad. In the ensuing clash, the JSA and their girlfriends managed to stop him.

Despite his villainy, King did marry Merry Pemberton, and together they had a son who would go on to become a hero, succeeding his father’s legacy in a new light. King himself joined villainous groups such as the Injustice Society and the second incarnation of the Secret Society of Super-Villains. For a time, he was imprisoned alongside other criminals in interdimensional limbo, only to be freed by the Ultra-Humanite, inhabiting the body of Delores Winter, in 1942.

Appearance: Brain Wave has an abnormally large, bald head. He wears large, round glasses with opaque, glowing white lenses that completely obscure his eyes. His attire consists of a long, flowing green robe with wide sleeves, draping down past his feet, covering most of his frame except for his hands and shoes. His shoes are simple, brown, and flat, contrasting with the dramatic robe.

Personality: Brain Wave is calculating, manipulative, and consumed by his own brilliance. His enormous intellect fuels both pride and cruelty, making him treat others as pawns to be deceived, controlled, or discarded when they are no longer useful. He takes satisfaction in bending minds and warping reality through his illusions, reveling in the fear and confusion he causes. Despite his cold and ruthless nature, he is also deeply insecure, scarred by rejection and bitterness from his early life. These personal wounds often surface as a need to dominate others and prove his superiority. His obsession with control, both mental and emotional, drives nearly every choice he makes, whether in his schemes against heroes or in his twisted personal relationships.

Brain Wave possessed a wide array of mental powers, the most notable being his ability to cast illusions. These illusions went far beyond simple visual tricks; he could alter perceptions across all senses, making people believe they could taste food he conjured or feel pain from imaginary attacks, which in reality inflicted genuine mental damage. His formidable mind also granted him telepathy, allowing him to read and influence thoughts, as well as unleash devastating brain-blasts as direct psychic assaults. At his peak, he was even capable of creating force fields with his mental energy and, later in life, transferred all of his powers to his son, ensuring his legacy endured.

In addition to his psychic gifts, Henry King was a genius-level intellect, with advanced skills in gadgetry, science, and psychiatry. His intelligence and mastery of mental manipulation made him both a formidable criminal mastermind and one of the Justice Society’s most dangerous adversaries.
