PERSONALITY: CJ is markedly different from the previous playable characters in the Grand Theft Auto series. While Claude and Tommy Vercetti are both depicted as extremely immoral and feeling little to no regret for all of the people that they kill, CJ is depicted as having a considerably less violent personality, occasionally giving his targets a chance to redeem themselves. An example is his failed attempt at convincing Eddie Pulaski to see that he was no more than Tenpenny's pawn in the mission High Noon. Furthermore, CJ displays genuine remorse for having to kill Ryder and Big Smoke, who he considered close friends. Despite his empathy, CJ doesn't seem to feel any remorse when innocent people might get hurt by his actions. This is best seen during Management Issues where CJ also kills a woman accompanying Alan Crawford, despite only being tasked to kill the latter. Another example is CJ wasting an unassociated valet just to get his uniform during 555 We Tip. In Architectural Espionage, if the player doesn't have a camera before starting the mission, CJ will forcefully steal a camera by hurting a random tourist. CJ also has no problem with killing members of other gangs, and willfully slaughters any that get in his way of reclaiming Grove Street Families turf or try to sabotage his businesses, though in return, the gangsters are also trying to kill CJ.

CJ's naïve personality, face-value interpretations of other characters' responses occasionally leads them to question CJ's intelligence (namely The Truth and Catalina). Despite his mostly calm nature, CJ has shown a very violent and aggressive side when his family is threatened, as with the mission Deconstruction, in which he vows to teach a lesson to the construction workers who insulted his sister, Kendl, ultimately killing them all and burying the foreman alive in a portable toilet. CJ, like his brother Sweet, holds a deep-seated loyalty towards Grove Street and the hood, as seen in his reaction to the resentful attitude of his friends and siblings early on. Though, towards the end of the game, while Sweet is in prison, and CJ is making progress in San Fierro and Las Venturas, the unattended Grove Street becomes Ballas turf and is filled with crack dealers. CJ tries to get his brother to abandon the hood for their assets elsewhere, but he is quickly convinced into re-taking the turf and rebuilding the Grove Street Families. Despite his young age, Carl often handles situations in a professional manner. This is shown during the mission The Meat Business when Carl keeps encouraging Ken Rosenberg to calm down and remember that "you're the boss".

At the beginning of the game, Carl, much like Sweet, has a very gang-based and ghetto mentality, stubbornly holding to his gangster views and beliefs, such as his unwillingness to "rat" towards the cops, holding onto his "street code" and naïvely believing that other gangsters also hold onto them, and using outdated methods to create tools, such as a silencer. Shortly after being exiled from Los Santos, Carl continues to hold onto these beliefs until Cesar Vialpando reveals that Smoke was a drug dealer for a long time and was transporting drugs from San Fierro, and Kendl notes that Smoke's house was purchased with drug money.

However, shortly after his arrival in San Fierro, Carl gradually loses his gang-based mentality and adopts more strategic, intelligent, and cunning viewpoints and mentality. This is demonstrated by planting drugs in a D.A.'s car and reporting to the SFPD, leading the Da Nang Boys away from Chinatown to allow a Triad leader to escape assassination, using stinger traps to steal a car without damaging it, scaring a high-ranking mobster into revealing his identity, planning a major casino heist in Las Venturas, saving Madd Dogg's life by using a truck full of crates, leading an all-out assault with the Triads to reclaim Madd Dogg's mansion from the Vagos, and using a SWAT Tank to break into a heavily protected building. Carl also becomes the successful manager of Madd Dogg, and through his various connections, helps revitalize Madd Dogg's career, further showing Carl's growing mindset and business-like methods.

However, some of CJ's actions still seem to be less thought through, with CJ seemingly hoping the situations will end well for him. The best example is going to interact with Johnny Sindacco personally on two occasions, despite knowing he will recognize him after the ordeal in Fender Ketchup.

AGE: 24 . SEAN 'SWEET' JOHNSON: PHYSICAL BODILY APPEARANCE: Sweet is a Lean-Bodied African-American man with a black goatee with stubble across his jaw. He wears a green cap with an "LS" logo (presumably standing for Los Santos) and green loose knee-length pants.

PERSONALITY: Sweet is described in the C.R.A.S.H. dossier (viewable in the instruction manual) as "naive, but powerful". He is intensely loyal to his neighborhood but he can be harshly judgmental of people. As leader of the Grove Street Families, he idealistically thought of using them as a means to keep crack and other hard drugs off the streets, and even when GSF's influence began to wane, he refused to compromise family and friends, and originally founded the Grove Street Families as a way of keeping his hood safe. When CJ leaves for Liberty City after Brian's death, he views it as a betrayal of both the gang and his family and is reluctant to forgive him. Once CJ has proven himself, however, Sweet angrily stands up for him when others insult him. Due to his loyalty, Sweet is also extremely provincial, refusing to leave the hood and failing to show interest in the world outside of Grove Street.

While in prison, Sweet becomes despondent and gives up hope of ever getting out. After his release from prison, Sweet becomes angry and losing patience at CJ over his decision to abandon Grove Street. He refuses to go and see any of the properties CJ has acquired and returns to his house in Ganton. However, in the end the two brothers manage to take back Grove Street and get rid of Tenpenny.

Unlike the leaders of the Ballas and the Los Santos Vagos, Sweet is not a coward and often leads attacks on the rival gangs' home turf.

AGE: 29 . MISTER COMPASS: PHYSICAL BODILY APPEARANCE: Mister Compass is a Femboyish Man built solidly with an exceptionally tall, albeit somewhat narrow frame. MAJOR CIRCUIT: KEN 'OKARUN' TAKAMURA (高倉 健) (オカルン): Okarun is a teenager of short height and slender build with brown hair (black hair in the anime), brown eyes and he wears round-frame glasses. Originally, Okarun's hair was fashioned in a bowl cut, but it has since become unruly after his confrontation with the Flatwoods Monster. Though he was initially very skinny, Okarun has gained toned muscles as a result of his dedication to strength training and the numerous battles he faced dealing with spirits and aliens.

PERSONALITY: Okarun is a self-described socially awkward individual who has a consuming interest for the paranormal with his main focus being the existence of aliens and cryptids. This interest goes all the way back to his childhood where he tried to make contact with aliens in a desperate attempt to make friends, having grown up without a single one in his life due to constant bullying. As a result, Okarun developed an inferiority complex where he believes that he is incapable of fitting in with others or that people are better off not associating with him. Even after making friends with Momo Ayase, Okarun still seems to retain some low self-esteem. After Jiji stepped back into Momo's life, Okarun thought to himself that he could not compete with him when it came to being her friend based on his observation on how entertained Momo was being around him and had almost come close to ending his friendship with her as to not be a bother. According to Momo, Okarun's real problem with making friends was that he was too quick to make assumptions about others judging him, which resulted in him subconsciously keeping others at arm's length.

Okarun is an altruistic person who believes that it is only right to help others when they are in trouble. A noticeable example being how he offered Mantisian his kintama for him to sell and earn funds for his son's blood transfusion. As a friend, he is fiercely loyal and protective as he will not allow others to get away with harming those whom he has formed a bond with, such as how he furiously attacked the Evil Eye for harming Momo and taking over Jiji's body.

AGE: 27 . CESAR VIALPANDO: PHYSICAL BODILY APPEARANCE: As Cesar is a Mexican, his appearance is much like most of Mexican men, with a partially shaved head, light moustache, landing strip goatee, hazel brown eyes, and several tattoos on his body. He wears a yellowish white tank top, grey pants and black shoes. Due to this, although being a member of Varrios Los Aztecas, his appearance resembles the second member of the Los Santos Vagos, which is also a Mexican gang.

PERSONALITY: Cesar is revealed to be a kind, loyal, caring, and selfless person. His loyalty comes from when he stops his gang members from fighting with Carl in the mission Cesar Vialpando. He also assures Carl he will take care of his sister Kendl and make sure she is brought no harm, which is exactly what he does. When it comes to Kendl, he is genuinely kind and protective towards her, as seen in the mission Deconstruction where he attempts to confront the construction workers for harassing her.

The only negative characteristic of Cesar's is his lack of patience, as he might lose his temper if things take longer than planned. This is seen in the mission Puncture Wounds, in which he becomes very angry just because he failed to steal a car on his own. Cesar is also revealed to be afraid of heights, as seen in Customs Fast Track.

Cesar is quite the opposite of his cousin Catalina, who is a ruthless, selfish, and extremely arrogant person. However, Cesar still does not want others to disrespect her, seen by his reaction when Carl calls her a "Bitch" in front of him.

PERSONALITY: He can be described as a passive person in his relationship with Keiko, often overlooking the complaints he had about Keiko's helicopter parenting because he wasn't assertive enough to confront her. However, it can be said that he is a caring husband towards Keiko, and a caring father towards Yasu as he happily greeted him the morning Yasu bolts downstairs to check on him and his wife.

PERSONALITY: Boyfriend is portrayed as a young, overzealous rapper with a love for music, donuts[7] and his girlfriend. He loves to sing and show off his skills, resulting in his confident and cocky character. He is very determined and persistent about reaching his goals and won't let anyone get in the way of his success, even when threatened with death.

Boyfriend is implied to be clingy, as he is never seen without Girlfriend by his side. He is also very unintelligent, either not realizing when he is in danger or being overconfident about his ability to get out of it.[8] As a result, he is afraid of virtually nothing.[9] This is demonstrated during both Monster and Winter Horrorland, where he does not appear to be afraid despite Monster's constant threats to him and Girlfriend. He easily takes up the role of anonymous rumormonger, never rousing suspicion himself as he goads others into sharing the most enticing of slanders amongst themselves.
