The story is set in 2026, beginning on the morning of June 1st in Boston, Massachusetts. A mysterious affliction — much later understood by survivors as a highly aggressive, unknown prion-like disease — has begun spreading globally through completely unknown means. No one in the world (government, scientists, media, or civilians) knows it is a prion disease. Official narratives blame a new flu strain, mass hysteria, contaminated water supplies, experimental drugs, or bioweapon rumors.

June 1–8 (Pre-Collapse): Isolated violent incidents increase. News reports downplay them. Panic buying begins. Power and supply chains are mostly intact. June 9–30 (During Collapse): Mass violence erupts. Hospitals and police are overwhelmed. Cities descend into riots and lockdowns. Boston’s National Guard units are partially activated but quickly lose cohesion. July onward (Post-Collapse): Full societal breakdown. Infrastructure fails. The infected dominate the streets. Small survivor groups scavenge in ruins. The affliction continues mutating in unpredictable ways.

    Entry settings

Boston – Primary Setting Boston is a dense, historic coastal city on Massachusetts Bay. Key features:

South End (starting location): Historic brownstones, mixed residential/commercial, close to Washington Street and the highway. Downtown & Financial District: Skyscrapers, government buildings, easy to barricade but high risk of chaos. North End: Narrow streets, Italian heritage, dense and maze-like — good for hiding but easy to get trapped. Cambridge / Community College area: Across the Charles River. Academic buildings, labs, dorms. Major Landmarks: Boston Common, Freedom Trail, Logan International Airport (early chaos hotspot), MBTA subway and commuter rail (dangerous tunnels post-collapse), Seaport District, Back Bay. Surrounding Areas: Dorchester, Roxbury, Quincy, Cambridge, Somerville. Suburbs like Newton, Brookline, and Watertown become contested zones.

The city’s old infrastructure (narrow streets, tunnels, bridges) makes movement difficult once the infected swarm. The Charles River and harbor provide some natural barriers but also trap people.

  2. #2Greater Setting

    Entry settings

Greater New England & Upstate New York Region The outbreak hits the Northeast hard due to population density and travel hubs:

Massachusetts: Boston (epicenter), Worcester, Springfield, Cape Cod (initially safer, later isolated). New Hampshire & Vermont: Rural, forested areas with scattered survivors. White Mountains and Green Mountains offer potential long-term refuges but harsh winters. Maine: Sparse population, good for hiding but limited supplies. Coastal towns fall quickly due to fishing/shipping traffic. Connecticut & Rhode Island: Heavily urbanized corridors between Boston and New York. Providence and Hartford see rapid collapse. Upstate New York: Albany (state capital), Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo. The Adirondacks and Finger Lakes provide remote wilderness escape options. I-90 and I-87 corridors become death traps full of abandoned vehicles and roaming infected packs.

Major interstates (I-95, I-93, I-90, I-91) clog early with panic traffic and later become hunting grounds for the infected.

    Entry settings

The Affliction (Prion-Like Disease) The disease destroys brain tissue progressively. Early symptoms mimic severe flu or neurological disorders. It is not instantly fatal — bodies often remain mobile long after higher brain function is gone. Transmission method is unknown (not obviously airborne or purely fluid-based). Incubation varies from days to weeks. Common Symptoms (All Stages):

Intense “buzzing” or itching inside the skull Aggression, confusion, memory loss Blackening or bloodshot eyes Loss of speech → guttural moans, clicking teeth Cannibalistic urges Bodies continue moving despite severe injury

  5. #5Variants and possible Mutations

    Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Infected Variants / Mutations As the disease progresses and spreads, different “strains” or mutations appear. Survivors categorize them informally:

Talkers: Still somewhat coherent. Beg for help, complain about the “noise in my head,” or lash out suddenly. Can form small hunting groups. Dangerous because they can speak and lure victims. Can wield crude weapons.

Ragers / Twitchers (Most Common): Constantly twitching, jerky movements, extreme aggression. Fast shamblers. Strong but uncoordinated. Eyes often fully black or milky. Relentless trackers.

Howlers / Screamers: Emit loud, unnatural howls that attract other infected. Often early-stage but with damaged vocal cords. Used as “alarms” by hordes.

Brutes (Rare, later stages): Larger individuals whose bodies swell with fluid retention or muscle spasms. Extremely strong, slow, but can smash through barricades. Skin appears mottled and darkened.

Stalkers: Retain some cunning. Move quietly, can leap multiple meters and outrun survivors. Have sharp bone claws.

Feeders: (More common later) Obsessed with eating. Found in large groups around corpses or food stores. Less aggressive unless disturbed while feeding. Cant see well but can hear very well.

Spitters: Ragers who can spit infectious and corrosive stomach bile up to 20 yards away.

Infected do not “turn” instantly — progression can take hours to days. Some victims turn normally; others reanimate partially if the prion load is high enough. Some more powerful mutants can even regenerate from damage.

  6. #6Miscellaneous

    Entry settings

National Guard Role: Units are called up early but are under-equipped and quickly overrun as command chains break.

Government Response: FEMA and CDC issue conflicting advice. Martial law declared too late. No effective treatment or vaccine.

Survivor Mindset: Conspiracy theories run wild (5G, vaccines, solar activity, bioweapon). Most people refuse to believe the scale until it’s too late.

Tone: Slow-burn horror turning into desperate survival. Emphasize isolation, dwindling resources, psychological strain, and the horror of watching people you know degrade. Power stays on 10 days after the start of the scenario, Water continues to run for 20 days, cell data and internet works for 11 and radios work indefinitely as long as they have power.
