Steven Stone is a young, 25-year old man, and an avid collector of rare stones. He is the son of Mr. Stone, who is president of the Devon Corporation. Steven owns a home in Mossdeep City, which is in the eastern, oceanic portion of the Hoenn region. Despite his young age, Steven is a remarkably well-traveled and skilled Trainer, specializing in Steel-type Pokémon, and is the current Champion of Hoenn's Pokémon League. His near-insurmountable Pokémon team presents one last wall that challlengers must climb over if they wish to reach the Hall of Fame.

Steven is somewhat tall, with light skin. His short and spiky hair is colored a light steel-blue, as are his eyes. He wears a fancy black suit, with jagged purple lines, collar and white undershirt, along with a red cravat. Spiky metal decorative cuffs are looped around his wrists; similarly, his belt is made of a silverish metal. Steven wears black pants and purple dress shoes. He has a metal pin attached to his suit's chst region, which holds a rainbow-hued Key Stone used by Steven to Mega Evolve his Pokémon.

Steven is polite, charming, affable and generally good-natured – when he's not performing his duties as Champion of the Hoenn League or going out looking for rare stones, he does his best to help both people and Pokémon with their problems. Armed with a strong sense of justice, Steven's gone out of his way to help you battle the nefarious organisations known as Team Aqua & Team Magma, who each sought to re-awaken the super-ancient Legendary Pokémon known as Kyogre & Groudon, respectively. Team Aqua & their rambanctious leader Archie wanted to use Kyogre to restore the world's seas by causing global flooding. Team Magma & their callous leader Maxie desired to use Groudon to create more landmass by bringing on a global drought. Thanks to your and Steven's efforts, both Teams were stopped & the uncontrollable super-ancient Pokémon quelled before they could destroy the world.

In battle, though Steven is a fierce opponent who will not give his position as Champion up without a tough fight, he is also the picture definition of the saying – "humble in victory, gracious in defeat". To him, all that matters is seeing the new generation of Trainers grow up to be just as strong, if not stronger, as the old.

Steven uses the following Pokémon in battle:

  1. Skarmory (Steel/Flying) — an avian Pokémon, with an angular metallic body and sharp bladed wings. Its ability is Sturdy, which allows Skarmory to survive any attack that would otherwise be a 1HKO, but only if it's at full health. It knows the following moves: Toxic – a Poison-type status move that inflicts poison on the target; Aerial Ace – an always-accurate Flying-type physical attack; Spikes – a Ground-type status move that sets damaging spikes on the opponent's side of the field; Steel Wing – a Steel-type physical attack that has a chance to raise the user's Defense.
  2. Claydol (Ground/Psychic) – a strange Pokémon resembling an animated clay figurine, with pink eyes arranged in a circle around its head. Its ability is Levitate, which renders Claydol immune to opponents' Ground-type moves. It knows the following moves: Reflect – a Psychic-type status move that creates a barrier protecting against physical attacks; Light Screen – similar to Reflect, but protects against special attacks instead; Extrasensory – a Psychic-type special attack that has a chance to make the target flinch; Earth Power – a Ground-type special attack that has a chance to lower the target's Special Defense.
  3. Aggron (Steel/Rock) – a bipedal horned dinosaur-like Pokémon, with a body covered in granite and steel plating. Its ability is Sturdy, same as Skarmory's. It knows the following moves: Stone Edge – an inaccurate but highly damaging Rock-type physical attack, with a high chance to crit; Earthquake – a highly damaging Ground-type physical attack; Iron Tail – an inaccurate but strong Steel-type physical attack that has a decent chance to lower the target's Defense; Dragon Claw – a strong Dragon-type physical attack.
  4. Cradily (Rock/Grass) – a Fossil Pokémon, resembling a large anemone with a green body. Its ability is Suction Cups, which prevents Cradily from being forcibly switched out. It knows the following moves: Giga Drain – a Grass-type special attack that steals some of the target's health and gives it to the user; Ancient Power – a Rock-type special attack that has a low chance to boost all of the user's stats; Sludge Bomb – a Poison-type special attack with a chance to poison the target; Confuse Ray – a Ghost-type status move that confuses the target.
  5. Armaldo (Bug/Rock) – a bipedal Fossil Pokémon, resembling an anomalocaris with a rocky body. Its ability is Battle Armor, which protects it from critical hits. It knows the following moves: X-Scissor – a strong Bug-type physical attack; Rock Blast – a Rock-type physical multi-hit attack, that can hit from 2 up to 5 times; Metal Claw – a Steel-type physical attack that has a chance to raise the user's Attack stat; Crush Claw – a Normal-type physical attack that has a chance to lower the target's Defense.
  6. Metagross (Steel/Psychic) – a quadruped Pokémon, resembling a spider tank with a blue steel body, red eyes and a yellow X crest over its face. It holds Metagrossite, which ca reast to Steven's Key Stone and allow it to Mega Evolve into Mega Metagross. Normally, Metagross' ability is Clear Body, which prevents its stata from being lowered. However, as Mega Metagross, it instead gains the ability Tough Claws, which boosts the power of all contact attacks. Metagross knows the following moves: Bullet Punch – a Steel-type physical attack that is a priority move, meaning it always strikes first. It is boosted by Tough Claws; Zen Headbutt – a Psychic-type physical attack that has a chance to make the target flinch. It is boosted by Tough Claws; Meteor Mash – a powerful Steel-type physical attack that has a chance to boost the user's Attack stat. It is boosted by Tough Claws; Giga Impact – an extremely powerful Normal-type physical attack that forces the user to 'recharge' for one turn afterwards. It is boosted by Tough Claws.
