Welcome to a world dressed in the flesh of pleasure, where corruption, obsession, and devotion form the lifeblood that runs through its veins.

Welcome to Clive Barker's terrible dream of sex, love, pressed flesh, and pure obsession! Welcome to the Books of Blood...

This lore book is centered around the "Hellraiser" franchise, which got its start as a novella named "The Hellbound Heart" in the first volume of Barker's Short Story Anthology Series titled, "The Books of Blood".

What will you find here? Expanded character histories, terminology, locations, rituals, all pertaining to the inhabitants of the "Hellraiser" franchise, spanning mostly the first four films, "The Scarlet Gospels", and the Boom!Comics "Hellraiser" series, along with the 2022 "Hellraiser" reboot, along with my own touches and ideas that I had incorporated during my Tumblr/Twitter/Forum RP days.

The Cenobite known as Pinhead was once a human known as Elliot Spencer who was born in England during the Victorian Era in 1887. As a young adult, he would join the British Army and later serve in France during World War I.

During World War I, Elliott Spencer served as a Captain in the British Expeditionary Force. He was a charismatic and eloquent man, who could feel great empathy and compassion for those around him, however after participating in one of the Battles of Flanders, he loses his faith in humanity after witnessing the inhumanity enacted upon one another. He also loses his faith in God, whom he believed failed mankind. Captain Spencer did not believe he had the right to live after watching many of his comrades perish in such horrific circumstances. Suffering from the severe effects of post traumatic stress disorder, the disillusioned and jaded Spencer wandered the Earth indulging in a hedonistic lifestyle, turning to the baser methods of gratification for satisfaction and pleasure, until finding the Lament Configuration in British India and finally understanding the true pleasures of pain and suffering.

Sometime before his momentous first encounter with Kirsty Cotton, Pinhead would be summoned by the Lament Configuration to take another human, Frank Cotton. He would perform his usual routine of torture and dismemberment, but elected not to convert Cotton into a Cenobite, leaving him another lost soul in Leviathan's realm. However, this time, when Pinhead took Frank, a tiny schism remained, through which, unbeknownst to Pinhead and his minions, Cotton would later exploit to escape back to Earth.

A year later, Kirsty Cotton mistakenly summoned Pinhead and the Cenobites, having acquired the Lament Configuration from her uncle Frank. She believed it was little more than a puzzle box. The Hell Priest would explain that under Leviathan's rules, the trio would claim her and take her to Hell, until Kirsty unleashed a bombshell revelation: She knew Frank's whereabouts and was prepared to assist in Frank's recapture in exchange for her freedom. Pinhead initially agreed, and Kirsty lured Frank back to the site of the schism, where the Cenobites emerged, rending Frank's newly regenerated body to shreds. After reclaiming Frank, however, the Cenobites turned on Kirsty, reneging on their arrangement. Kirsty, however, had figured out the workings of the Lament Configuration, and reversed the schism, forcing Pinhead and his Cenobites back into the Labyrinth.

Pinhead would not wait long to have a rematch with his new human foil. Only a few days after Kirsty's victory over him, Pinhead was summoned to Earth once more, this time by Dr. Phillip Channard and a resurrected Julia Cotton. They had used a local patient, Tiffany, to open the Lament Configuration. Recognizing this, Pinhead deemed Tiffany an innocent and forbade her to be touched. As he returned to his realm, he stumbled across Kirsty once again. Engaging in a game of cat-and-mouse with her, Pinhead finally cornered Kirsty and Tiffany, only to be outsmarted again. Kirsty had uncovered research by Dr. Channard, including a photograph of his earlier self, Elliot Spencer. Confronted by this information, Pinhead's memories of his life as Spencer flared back up, and he relented on Kirsty and Tiffany, even briefly leading his fellow Cenobites in a battle with the newly created Channard cenobite. Unfortunately, the newly-reborn Spencer was easily struck down after being reverted to his human form, seemingly ending Pinhead's legacy for good.

Unfortunately, it would soon be learned that Spencer's reversion to his human form caused the negative attributes of himself to manifest into a completely independent entity, which took the form of Pinhead. Without his human half, which was now trapped in a Purgatorial shadow realm resembling the battlefield at Flanders, this new incarnation of Pinhead was unbound by the laws of the Cenobite Realm as he reconstituted himself on Earth. Spencer, however, had managed to escape Limbo with the help of reporter Joey Summerskill and confronted Pinhead by re-merging with him. Pinhead appeared to be unaffected at first, until he realized that he was once again bound to the Lament Configuration, which Joey immediately used to banish the restored entity back to the Cenobites' realm.

Kirsty Braeden (Formerly Kirsty Cotton) is now married to Trevor, a corrupt insurance agent who plots to have her killed in a murder-for-money scheme, using LeMarchand's box to "cleanly" kill Kirsty without the evidence pointing to himself, his mistress, or his co-conspirators. Pinhead appears to inform Trevor, who had amnesia throughout reliving the days leading up to and after his attempt on Kirsty's life, that he has actually been dead and trapped by the Cenobites for some time; Kirsty opened the box intentionally, in a strange turn of events, hoping to summon the devious Pinhead. Pleased at the prospect of a "reunion," he gleefully arrived hoping to finally leave with Kirsty in tow, but Kirsty ultimately struck a deal with him: she would be left alone, permanently, in exchange for Trevor and his co-conspirators, thus giving the Cenobites the victims' souls.

While he would normally be more adamant about taking her with him, as she has evaded him twice and even escaped the Labyrinth on multiple occasions, He instead happily agreed, with little to no argument. He, in fact, seemed quite pleased by her presence. However, in return, he reminded her of his sacrifice for her, and that soon she would have to come with him to the Cenobite Realm to take on his mantle. He gave her five years to get her affairs in order before he would come for her to take on his mantle.

  2. #2Hell Priestess

After getting her affairs in order, and accepting the Hell Priest's request for her to take over his mantle, Kirsty called upon her friend Tiffany, a fellow patient of the Channard Institute to discuss the matter. She informs Tiffany of her intention to become a Cenobite but explains that by accepting the position as High Priest, she'll be able to change things in Hell for the better. Kirsty then solves the Lament Configuration and willingly enters Hell, at which point, Tiffany destroys the puzzle box, in effect, trapping Kirsty in Hell. After accepting Pinhead's offer and sealing herself inside the Labyrinth, Kirsty begins her quest to be reunited with her loved ones. Once she enters the Labyrinth, Kirsty makes her way towards its center, where high above is a giant lozenge suspended in air, slowly rotating with radiant beams of blackest light emanating from it. The God of Flesh and Desire - Leviathan. As she approaches the dark master of Hell, the giant diamond-shaped god slowly lowers itself and a side panel opens, allowing Kirsty access within. As she walks up the ramp, the Hell Priest is waiting at the top of the ramp. As he sees Kirsty, he says, "Let us begin."

Kirsty then begins the painful transformation to become the new Pontifex of Hell. Taking a seat in a chair, Pinhead begins by grabbing a curved, sickle-like blade and proceeds to scalp Kirsty. He then informs Kirsty that it is her turn. Kirsty then proceeds to take a pair of tongs and proceeds to slowly and painfully remove all of the Hell Priest's nails from his head - the source of his power. Once completed, Kirsty and the Hell Priest strip out of their clothing, at which point, a multitude of tentacles controlled by Leviathan, manifests, and begins to transform Pinhead into a human, while painfully hammering Pinhead's nails into Kirsty's skull, transforming her into the High Priest of Hell. The now-human Elliot Spencer tells Kirsty to savor the pain, for it will be the last thing that she ever feels while in Hell. Once the transformation is completed, the two exchange a few final words. Before Kirsty began to serve the will of Leviathan, she performed one final act of revenge upon the one who had tormented her for so long. She ordered her friends to tear Spencer's soul apart. They gladly carried out their new master's orders. The soul of Elliot Spencer was then transported to the mortal realm.

Now, while Kirsty began her reign in Hell, Pinhead was once again Captain Elliot Spencer, scouring the globe for any that dared search for the Lament Configuration.

Roland Voight, a businessman, invites a homeless person named Joey to his mansion where he introduces him to an architectural puzzle box. Upon solving it, Joey is cut by a blade on the box before he is brutally murdered by a slew of chains.

Six years later, Riley McKendry, a recovering drug addict, is living with her estranged brother Matt, his boyfriend Colin, and their roommate Nora. Riley's boyfriend, Trevor, convinces her to help break into an abandoned storage warehouse where the only thing they find is the puzzle box which Trevor entrusts to Riley despite her concern.

After returning home late, Riley and Matt get into an argument when he accuses her of relapsing and forces her to leave. Upset, Riley takes the box to a nearby playground where she solves it but misses being cut by the blade. Riley then begins seeing mutilated creatures who tell her the blade was meant to pierce her flesh before passing it on.

Matt, feeling guilty about his strained relationship with Riley, finds her blacked out in the park but cuts himself on the box trying to wake her up. He leaves Riley to tend his wound in a bathroom but ends up having a headache. Outside, Riley notices the box changing shapes before she hears Matt screaming, finding him missing upon entering the bathroom.

Riley tries to convince Trevor that the box caused Matt's disappearance but he does not believe her. To find more answers about the box, Trevor accompanies Riley to an assisted living facility where Voight's former lawyer, Serena Menaker, currently resides. She guesses correctly that Riley solved the puzzle box and her brother is missing, and tries to take the box away from Riley but is cut by the blade in the process. After Riley and Trevor leave, Menaker is taken victim by the Cenobites.

Riley seeks more answers at Voight's mansion investigates journals and the architecture of the mansion, and is encountered by Matt's ghost. She embraces him but finds he has been flayed, hugging his muscles and nerves. Trevor, Colin, and Nora arrive to take Riley home. While Riley is explaining the box to Colin, Nora hits a switch in the bar of the mansion that opens a secret passage. She goes to explore but Trevor inadvertently shuts the door leaving her trapped. As he tries to rescue Nora, she is stabbed by a mysterious figure with the box blade. Riley, Trevor, and Colin leave in Trevor's van to get her help, and Nora finds herself in a decrepit hallway with the Cenobites approaching her. They hoist her up midair with chains, and the lead Cenobite referred to as "Pinhead" taunts her with needles before she explodes.

The others crash their van after Riley sees a reflection of Nora's torture in the rearview mirror, where Riley encounters The Priest herself. She reminds her she must finish the last 2 configurations of the puzzle, and either sacrifice herself or two others for completion. The three make their way back to the mansion as Pinhead and the other Cenobites approach them, and Trevor is injured by The Chatterer. Riley solves the next configuration and stabs The Chatterer, leading him to be the next sacrifice and die.

They escape the other Cenobites into the mansion and find that there are steel doors to lock them out. Riley devises a plan with Colin to lure another Cenobite inside to become the last sacrifice using the steel doors to trap it, but drops and loses the box in the process. Colin tries to find it but is stabbed by the mysterious figure, revealed to be Voight. Voight traps the Cenobites inside of the mansion but separates from himself and the others. He explains to the group he sought “sensation” after completing all of his sacrifices, and his "reward" resulted in a contraption being attached to him to twist his nerve endings, and seeks to reverse the damage. Voight speaks with Trevor in private, revealing he paid Trevor to complete the sacrifices with the box.

As Voight is negotiating with The Priestess for a different reward, Riley escapes with the box and unlocks the steel doors, causing The Priestess and Voight to come face to face, as well as bringing The Gasp to Colin. The Gasp begins to sacrifice Colin, and Trevor reveals to Riley he is aware of the consequences of the box. Riley reminds The Gasp that the deal was the box was in her hands, leading her to choose sacrifices, but she did not choose Colin. She instead stabs Trevor with the box, and he becomes the final sacrifice. Voight is successful in convincing The Priestess of a different reward, the contraption is undone his body is restored, and The Priestess allows him to experience true power. A large chain crashes through the ceiling into Voight's chest, lifting him into the Cenobite realm despite his pleas.

Riley approaches the Cenobites with the box. The Priestess offers her to choose her reward, and she chooses no reward, instead living her life with the guilt and pain she caused to others. The Priestess tells her that this is the Lament Configuration, a life of regret with bitter and brief suffering. The box reverts to its original state and she sets it on the floor, then she and Colin leave the mansion.

  3. #3Sister Cilice

Sister Nikoletta was a nun whose devotion to the Church waned as the seeds of lust and wanting grew secretly within her. Soon it was all she desired, to the point of obsession. One day, a man looking for a place to stay gave her the gift of a LeMarchand Box after sensing her desires. It has been said that once she opened the box, the Grillard cenobite came and began her transformation. Feeding her lust, Grillard used each of her holes before finally taking her to the Cenobite Realm.

They say that her name is unmentionable. The horrid name, like her actions, is so vile it must forever remain unspoken. Those unfortunate enough to have discovered her true name have never returned to utter it.

She is the fierce Holy Sister in the Order of the Gash, with a heart of tar so black that it is incapable of love and sympathy. Incredibly violent, she is all but uncontrollable, even by Priest. Left-handed, impatient, and relentlessly cruel, she wields sharp razors of both steel and tongue. To know her is to suffer the full tortures of Hell for eternity.

She remains one of the most elusive of the Cenobites, a far cry from her sister, Abigor, the extrovert, preferring to wield her power with a subtle grace that few in hell could manage. She is the High Priestess of Hell, the symbol of the moon and water, and the power of a woman.

Sister Silice joined the Priest's Coenobium and arrived with the Priest and Chatterer after Kirsty solved the puzzle box. She was sent back to hell when Kirsty solved the box again.

She appeared alongside the rest of the Priest's Coenobium when Dr. Channard used to open the box, and was quick to suggest they take her when the Priest reminded her that, "It is not hands that summon us, but desire", meaning that even though Tiffany had opened the box, it was not her desire that summoned them and she was not who they were after, or who they would take to the Labyrinth, but it was that of Dr. Channard's passion that called them, and he who was their true target. Before "experiencing her flesh", they allowed Kirsty to wander around for a while. When Kirsty encounters them once more, she shows Pinhead a picture of his human form, reminding him and the others that they have not always been Cenobites. Sister Cilice and the others are later sealed in the Pillar of Souls by Dr. Channard.

20 years after the deaths of the Priest's Coenobium, Chatterer and the Female Cenobite were both revived at some unknown point after the Priest shed blood on the sites of both of their deaths, similar to how Pinhead needed blood to emerge from the Pillar of Souls. Sister Cilice chose not to join the Priestess' Coenobium, instead choosing to become the Mother Superior to the Lustful, and has since entered into a twisted physical romance with the Priestess.

  4. #4Chatterer

As a pre-teenage boy, Chatterer, known as Jim, frames his mother for the murder of his abusive father and is sent to an orphanage, where he and the other adolescents are taught that they will be useless to society. There, he engages in a homosexual relationship with a boy named Seth and regularly prays to the God of Love for affection.

After turning sixteen, Jim joins Seth in becoming a prostitute, in which his physical appearance would often be complemented by his clients, to his disgust. One day, one of the clients asks him what his deepest desire is, to which he replies, "To be loved". Later, he is asked again by the client what his desire is, this time replying "to be ugly", believing that people would love him for who he is. The client hands him a Lament Configuration, and he begins to serve who he is told is the God of Pain and Desire by distributing the Lament Configurations to various people.

Years later, he comes across a blinded Seth, who was punished by their former pimp for Jim's decision to leave. Jim is told by another one of Leviathan's servants to make him solve a Configuration. Instead, Jim and Seth engage in sexual intercourse and Seth begins to angrily confess how much he hates Jim during the act. That night, Seth leaves without opening the Configuration and Jim's desire is granted as he is forcibly disfigured by the jealous God of Pain and Pleasure. As a cenobite, Chatterer joined the Hell Priest's Coenobium.

Chatterer appeared alongside Butterball, the Hell Priest, and the Female Cenobite as the primary antagonists threatening the Cotton Family. He first appeared at the beginning of Frank Cotton's demise and then recurred as Kirsty solved the configuration, after her encounter with The Engineer, bringing him to her in the hospital. Chatterer was the first to appear, shoving his fingers down Kirsty's throat to stop her from screaming. Chatterer kept Kirsty restrained as she made a deal with Priest to trade her soul for the recapture of Frank's.

Chatterer then appeared again in Kirsty's attic over Larry's dead body with the Priest and Butterball, searching for Frank.

After the uncle was torn apart and sent back to Hell's Jailers for revealing himself to the cenobites, Kirsty found that they weren't going to be true to their word, so she sent the Priest and Sister Cilice back to their realm by solving The Box again. Chatterer, who had disguised himself with a veil, was about to lay his knife into Kirsty when she solved the box again and sent him to the Labyrinth.

A year later, Chatterer came with the troop when Channard's desire for knowledge, along with Tiffany solving the box, opened the gateway to Hell. The Coenobium ran into Kirsty for a second time and the Priest let her explore the Labyrinth.

Kirsty and Tiffany later meet with The Priest's Coenobium once again, though this time she reveals to them that they were all human once before by showing them a picture of the Pries as a human, which in turn, brings all their memories forward. Dr Channard, now a cenobite himself, arrives and attempts to claim Tiffany and Kirsty for Leviathan, when the Priest, Chatterer, Sister Cilice, and Butterball stand up against The Doctor and start a fight, piercing him with Hell's hooked chains. This does not affect the cenobite and The Doctor retaliates by killing all four members of the Coenobium, with Chatterer being the third to fall. They all convert to their human form with Chatterer being shown as a young boy.

20 years after the deaths of the Priest's Coenobium, Chatterer and the Female Cenobite were both revived at some unknown point after the Priest shed blood on the sites of both of their deaths, similar to how Pinhead needed blood to emerge from the Pillar of Souls. Chatter has since reverted to his original form and rejoined the Priest's Coenobium. Here, Chatterer is identified as the Priest's page.

Chatterer is one of the few original cenobites to return in the Priestess' Coenobium, alongside the Priestess, and what seems to be a fusion of Sister Cilice and Angelique known as The Gasp, and his appearance has been revamped, without eliminating his core features (eyeless face with clicking teeth). The leather has been replaced by a naked and extremely mutilated body whose top part is vaguely reminiscent of an executioner.

He appeared, shortly after the Hell Priestess and the Gasp, as Riley McKendry's vision. Meanwhile, the two appeared as soon as Riley resolved the box, without cutting herself, The Chatterer showed himself to Riley the next day, after Matt's disappearance, when she was at Trevor's house. It was an instant, but enough to scare her off and make Trevor worried.

He appears later alongside The Masque and The Hell Priestess, taunting an already scared Nora. After The Priestess pierces her with Hell's hooked chains and stabs her neck with one of her pins, Nora is face to face with the chattering cenobite. He pushed her head towards him, her blood spilling all over her face, until she got flayed by the hooks.

After her confrontation with the Priestess, an agitated Riley, wounded by the puzzle box, is against sacrificing her friends, even though this would mean her certain death. Quickly after being found by Trevor and Colin, they meet the priestess once again, opening a portal from hell and The Chatterer coming out of it. Riley and Trevor quickly run away from him. meanwhile, Colin is looking at him, completely scared, until he trips and falls. Riley and Trevor already climbed the gate of Voight's mansion, in fear for Colin, but The Chatterer isn't coming for him. He quickly goes to the locked gates and opens them, pushing the door and Riley and Trevor, trying to push back, against the wall. He grabs Trevor and bites his arm. Riley stabs the chattering cenobite with the puzzle box marking him as a sacrifice. The Chatterer takes a step back and gets immediately torn apart by Leviathan's hooked chains, The Priestess is shown to be slightly impressed by this. He is not killed by this, simply returns him to the Labyrinth and must undergo another transformation to reconstitute his physical form.

  5. #5Butterball

    Keys: cenobite, laslo, butterball

    Enabled · After character · Order 100 · 100%

    Entry settings

Laslo was an obese and perverted man who found pleasure in sin. He was dragged into hell when he found and solved the puzzle box. Little is known of his human life, as he very eagerly joined the Order of the Gash to serve under Leviathan. But it is said that he was a repugnant rapist, who had a taste for taken women and little girls.

He joined the Priest's Coenobium and appeared when Frank Cotton solved the puzzle box and called Butterball and the others.

Later on, Kirsty Cotton summoned him and the other cenobites. They agreed to allow Kirsty to escape them to turn in Frank Cotton who previously escaped from them. He and the others were sent back to hell by Kirsty when they tried to double-cross her.

Butterball returned when Dr. Channard had used Tiffany to open the box, and pursued Kirsty and Tiffany entered the Labyrinth through the Puzzle box, he was later killed by Dr. Channard and was trapped in the Pillar of Souls along with his fellow cenobites.

He too was revived 20 years later by the Priest, alongside Chatterer and Sister Cilice; however, he did not rejoin the Coenobium, he joined the monastery at the center of the Labyrinth. There he would make a name for himself as a diplomat of sorts between warring Coenobiums. However, during this time, he and the Priest grew to have a rather antagonistic relationship with one another, as the Priest saw him leaving his Coenobium as a slap in the face for reviving him.

When it came time for the Priest to pass on his mantle, Butterball was one of the main proponents of forcing him to retire; as he saw the Priest becoming too tired and soft for failing to capture Kirsty over so many years and multiple encounters.

  6. #6Angelique

Keys: Princess of Torment, cenobite, angelique, princess, daughter

    Enabled · After character · Order 100 · 100%

    Entry settings

When Philippe LeMarchand Duc De L'Isle, a wealthy French man, who had commissioned the puzzle box's construction. Sometime during the 18th Century, he used the Lament Configuration to summon Angelique, Princess of the Labyrinth, having been the daughter of Leviathan. Duc De L'Isle killed a young woman and performed a ritual connecting the gateway between Earth and Hell using the Puzzle Box. The final step brought forth a demon servant with a requirement that a vessel this servant would use have minimally damaged skin from the sacrificed victim.

Because he assisted in the ritual Jacques, De L'lsle's assistant and servant, could also control Angelique. Together they decide to kill De L'lsle, after which Jacques commands Angelique to kill Philippe LeMarchand who returns to the mansion to retrieve the puzzle box.

Two hundred years later, Angelique (who has kept Jacques alive) killed him for refusing permission to investigate the LeMarchand heir in New York. When she arrived in New York, Angelique discovered that John Merchant (LeMarchand's heir) had unintentionally created an artifact similar to the Lament Configuration, which was potentially the largest gateway to the Labyrinth. She proceeded to sacrifice a victim by having him solve the puzzle box, which she hoped would summon reinforcements from the Labyrinth. Instead, the Priest emerged from the gateway and stated that things had changed since her absence from Hell.

Angelique and the Priest tried to force John Merchant to use the building as a permanent gateway to Hell. Along the way, they turned a pair of twin security guards into the Siamese Cenobites and later used the Chatterer Beast to hold John's wife and son hostage. In an act of defiance, John attempted to trap them but was decapitated by one of Pinhead's chains. Meanwhile, John's wife managed to send all five Cenobites back to Hell.

Pinhead then forcibly turned Angelique into a Cenobite as punishment for her failure to manipulate John. After this, Leviathan itself removed her from the Priest's Coenobium and has since kept her in her position as Princess of the Labyrinth.

  7. #7Kirsty Cotton

Keys: daddy's girl, baby doll, priestess, cotton, survivor, inheritor, kirsty, girl, hell, little girl

Kirsty's mother died when she was young. When her father remarried, Kirsty was always leery of her new stepmother Julia, even noticing how her uncle Frank watched the couple intently at their wedding.

Kirsty, Larry's teenage daughter and Frank's niece sees Julia bringing a man to the house and follows her to the attic, where she finds Frank. She evades Frank and escapes with the puzzle box, collapsing shortly after. Awakening in a hospital, Kirsty solves the box out of curiosity and unknowingly summons the Cenobites and a monster called the Engineer, which she narrowly escapes. The Cenobites' leader (referred to by fans as "Pinhead") explains that although they have been perceived as both angels and demons, they are simply "explorers" from another dimension seeking carnal experiences, and they can no longer differentiate between pain and pleasure. When they attempt to force Kirsty to return to their realm with them, she informs Pinhead that Frank has escaped them. The Cenobites agree to spare Kirsty and re-capture Frank instead, with the condition that Frank must confess to escaping them.

Kirsty returns home, where Frank has killed Larry and has taken on his identity by wearing his skin. Julia shows her what is purported to be Frank's flayed corpse in the attic. Kirsty then leaves the attic, locking the door behind her. The Cenobites appear and, not fooled by the deception, demand the man who "did this". Kirsty tries to escape but is held by Julia and Frank. Frank reveals his true identity to Kirsty and, when his sexual advances are rejected, he decides to kill her to complete his rejuvenation. He accidentally stabs Julia instead and drains her without remorse. Frank chases Kirsty to the attic and, when he is about to kill her, the Cenobites appear after hearing him confess to killing her father. Now certain he is the one they are looking for, they ensnare him with chains with hooks and tear him to pieces. When the Cenobites double-cross Kirsty and attempt to take her, she grabs the puzzle box from Julia's dead hands and banishes them by reversing the motions needed to open the puzzle box. Kirsty's boyfriend Steve arrives and they both escape the collapsing house.

Afterward, Kirsty throws the puzzle box onto a burning pyre. A vagrant who has been stalking Kirsty walks into the fire and retrieves the box before transforming into a winged skeleton-like creature and flying away. The box ends up with the same merchant who sold it to Frank, who offers it to another customer.

Following the incident, Kirsty passed out. Police officers brought her and Steve to the Channard Institute, where she was to be held for observation. Unbeknownst to her, the institute's director, Phillip Channard, was a collector of the puzzle boxes and wanted to use her to access the Cenobite realm. While resting, Kirsty began seeing visions of her father, skinned and bleeding, and decided to try and find her father in hell. She befriended a doctor named Kyle McRae and went on the search for her missing father.

Meanwhile, Dr Channard retrieved the bloody mattress from police evidence and tricked a patient into spilling more blood on it, thus resurrecting Julia. Channard used another patient named Tiffany to open the box and release the Cenobites. Arriving at the scene, Kirsty entered the Cenobite realm herself to be confronted by Pinhead and his minions. Kirsty demanded information about her father, only to be flatly told Larry was "in his own hell, and quite unreachable." Rejecting the answer, Kirsty pressed on until she found a simulation of her family's old home. To her dismay, Kirsty found the source of her visions was Frank, who had lured her into his own hell to molest her. Spotting an old photo of Frank on a dresser, Kirsty set fire to it, destroying Frank's image and reducing him to his skinless form.

On her way out, Kirsty encountered Tiffany, who had been left to wander about the corridors. As the two made their way back to the outside they were confronted by Julia, but tricked her into a wind tunnel where she was ripped from her own skin. As they exited the Realm and made their way out of the institute, Channard - now transformed into a Cenobite - attacked them. Fleeing back into the Cenobite corridors, Kirsty and Tiffany ran straight into Pinhead's group. However, Kirsty had a surprise for Pinhead. Having found a dossier on a long-missing army captain in Channard's office, Kirsty revealed to Pinhead that he had once been that very person. She gave Pinhead a photo of when he was human, triggering Pinhead's memories of his former identity. The cenobites helped Kirsty fight Dr. Channard, but died doing so. However, Kirsty and Tiffany used the distraction to escape and recover the puzzle box, with which they then confronted Leviathan, the silent ruling entity of the Cenobite plane. With the box, they rendered Leviathan inert, then escaped just as the portals slammed shut. Kirsty and Tiffany then left to start a new life and a new beginning.

Kirsty Cotton, now Braeden is now married to Trevor, a corrupt insurance agent who plots to have her killed in a murder-for-money scheme, using Lemarchand's box to "cleanly" kill Kirsty without the evidence pointing to himself, his mistress, or his co-conspirators. Pinhead appears at the end of the film to inform Trevor, who had amnesia throughout the film, that he has been dead and trapped by the Cenobites for some time; Kirsty opened the box intentionally, in a strange turn of events, hoping to summon the devious Pinhead. He seemed quite pleased by her presence. However, he told her that soon she would have to repay her debt for his sacrificed life by willingly taking on his mantle, to which he gave her five years to get her affairs in order before he came back for her.

The Cenobites are extradimensional beings who exist in an extra-dimensional realm that hosts the God of Flesh and Desire, Leviathan. They can reach Earth's reality only through a schism in time and space, which is opened and closed using certain unearthly artifacts. The most common form for these artifacts is that of an inconspicuous-looking puzzle box called the Lament Configuration, which summons Pinhead's Coenobium.

The Cenobites vary in number, appearance, and motivations. The Cenobites all have horrific mutilations and/or body piercings and wear fetishistic black leather clothing that often resembles butchery garments or religious vestments. The clothing also serves to support their piercings and tools.

The religious aspects of their origins and motivations are ambiguous: despite the presence of the word "Hell" in the franchise, no overt reference or iconography links the Cenobites to any traditional Abrahamic or Eastern depiction of damnation, demonic nature, or Infernal origin, leaving the most likely interpretation to be that to an outside observer, the bizarre and unpleasant properties of the Cenobites' native plane of existence would likely be interpreted to be Hell or "hellish". The Cenobites exhibit amoral personalities--neither demonstrably malicious nor beneficent--displaying a depraved indifference or lack of empathy towards their victims. They acquired more traditional demonic attributes and designations as beings of Hell in the later incarnations, particularly the comic books.

The philosophical motivations of the Cenobites change with time and medium. In their original incarnation, they manifested as devoted followers of a supernatural hedonism with unorthodox definitions of pleasure; although vaguely described, this form of pleasure endorsed by the Cenobites involved two distinct forms: the expansion of sensation to an extremely painful point of sensory overload, and enduring excruciating pain through incessant tortures that transcend traditional laws of physics. They exhibited no discernible morality or immorality, merely the unwavering devotion to their craft. In the film adaptation (Hellraiser) they exhibited a more severe tone: impatient, stern, humorless, and almost intractably officious towards their duties, as well as capable of duplicity, illustrated when they attempt to violate their bargain with Kirsty Cotton.

The physical compositions of the Cenobites give them each several unique abilities, but there are a few traits common or standard to all. When summoned, they seem to be able to decide exactly when, where, and by what means they will appear. In Hellraiser, the Cenobites appeared immediately in the hospital room, where Kirsty called them in forms of light or electrical energy. Later, they appeared from the darkness of the attic when she led them to their quarry.

Such as when the configuration was solved by Tiffany, they caused the rooms they manifested in to take on the stonework and cyclopean properties of their native realm, the Labyrinth. They all appear to be telekinetic to a degree, able to control the hooked chains that are their trademark weapon of choice, as well as snatch small objects at a distance (such as how Angelique recovered the box). Though not entirely confirmed, they seem to be able to summon forth their chains from any nearby shadows. They each seem to possess great strength, heightened resistance to damage, and some degree of supernatural empathy. They also tend to be patient, logical, and discerning.

Individual abilities vary widely. In the two earlier movies, there was little difference between them until the Dr. Channard Cenobite was created, presenting the ability to generate customized tentacles and spears. However, he seemed to represent an element of the shifting powers of the Labyrinth. When the Pinhead character's inhuman evil manifests in the world, it seems to have nearly unlimited and highly versatile powers. His human side suggests that he is no longer bound by the rules governing the other Cenobites (suggesting others among them might have such power). He can telekinetically control vast areas, transmute matter, create and control fire (pyrokinesis), and animate objects. In any case, he creates several Cenobites in both the third and fourth movies that have powers unique to their forms, such as a man that launches razor-edged CDs, a pair of twins that can crush people between their bodies, a man with a pneumatic camera eye that can impale targets, and so forth.

Cenobitic (or coenobitic) monasticism is a monastic tradition that stresses community life. Often in the West the community belongs to a religious order, and the life of the cenobitic monk is regulated by a religious rule, a collection of precepts. The older style of monasticism, to live as a hermit, is called eremitic. A third form of monasticism, found primarily in Eastern Christianity, is the skete.

Within the Order of the Gash, coenobiums are individual castes of cenobites that are summoned via their various rituals to spread the Scarlet Gospel of Leviathan, the God of Flesh and Desire. They all live in an extradimensional realm, where their world is an endless labyrinth over which their god Leviathan hovers. They are self-described explorers of the furthest regions of experience and sensation, students of pleasure and pain, and masters of the line where the two meet and become one.

The Order of the Gash is a mysterious and otherworldly religious group that follows the God of Flesh and Desire, Leviathan's teachings.

Origin and Nature: The Order of the Gash, its members are known as the Cenobites, are followers of the God of Flesh and Desire, Leviathan. These beings were once human but transformed in their relentless pursuit of gratification. Their current state is far removed from their former humanity.

The Cenobites’ Purpose: The Cenobites are so dedicated to exploring physical experience that they no longer distinguish between sensations of pleasure and pain. When humans summon them—either in accidental desire or in hopes of experiencing unknown pleasures—they are often taken to the Cenobites’ home dimension. In this dimension, those who are deemed unworthy become “experiments” in discovering the limits of physical experience, resulting in eternal torment, as very few are worthy of and can withstand this training to become a member of the Order. They study what is known as the Scarlet Gospel, which is the teachings of their god, Leviathan.

Variability and Ambiguity: The Cenobites vary in number, appearance, and motivations depending on the Coenobium. Their philosophies and abilities have evolved, and while they are mostly morally ambiguous (sometimes seen as “demons” and other times as “angels”), some Cenobites are malicious entities reveling in causing harm, while others seek to find those worthy of joining their ranks and exploring the furthest regions of experience.

Leviathan is the king of Hell and rules over the Cenobites. Pinhead was created when Captain Spencer's (a World War I veteran who solved the Lament Configuration) soul and the soul of Xipe Totec (a Mayan king) merged. His chosen form is that of a massive, rotating ornate metal diamond levitating above the labyrinth.

Leviathan is modified by being able to grant wishes to whoever holds the puzzle box after making five sacrifices to the Cenobites. The wishes it grants are based on the six configurations the puzzle box takes on. However, each wish in the end will be twisted to include some kind of pain. The only exception to this, presumably, is Lament, which is to live with the pain one caused, knowing that it will be "bitter and brief" instead of desiring a gift. In addition, Leviathan can produce a large chain to impale people who choose the Leviathan Configuration (power), taking them to its realm and gruesomely transforming them into new Cenobites.

Although it appears to be an ornate metallic diamond on the outside, that shares markings with many of LaMarchand's various boxes; that is merely the shell of the god itself, which is housed inside of it, filling every inch of its insides as a mass of flesh and clockwork. It is an all-seeing being, and infinitely powerful. When choosing new Cenobites, it unleashes rays of black colored light that reveals the truest desires of its chosen to themselves, and how those desires have affected their life.

As its name might suggest, the Labyrinth is a vast multi-leveled maze of countless corridors, platforms, and rooms. Impossible for those not from the realm to navigate, it holds innumerable unworthy souls under continual torment from its cenobite denizens. What form this torment takes varies depending on the individual, but each is specific to the person undergoing the process. Above the Labyrinth floats its god,” the entity known as Leviathan, an enormous geometric shape that rules there, although what it does remains a mystery to most.

It is described as merely a dimension in which pleasure and pain are indistinguishable. Some that have been to the Labyrinth and escaped have called it Hell, although sometimes referred to as Hell by other supernatural beings, whether it is the Abrahamic Hell is open to debate.

A Puzzle Box or LeMarchand Box, is a fictional lock puzzle or puzzle box created by the fictional antagonist Philip LeMarchand, an 18th-century French architect, artisan, and designer of some infamy. He first created his designs as bizarre, intricately designed music boxes, as he was well known as a maker of mechanical singing birds. But as a devotee of the occult, he became obsessed with the supernatural which directly influenced the creation of the first puzzle box, known as the "Lament Configuration" or "The Box of Sorrows". When solved, a dolorous bell can be heard tolling, as if from a distance, announcing the arrival of the Cenobites, extra-dimensional beings that serve the lord and master of the Labyrinth- Leviathan.

A LeMarchand's box is a mystical/mechanical device that acts as a door — or a key to a door — to another dimension or plane of existence. The solution creates a bridge through which beings may travel in either direction across this "Schism". The inhabitants of this other realm may seem demonic to humans. An ongoing debate among occultists and followers of LeMarchand's work is whether the realm accessed by the "Lament Configuration" is intended to be the Christian version of Hell or some other dimension of endless pain and suffering. However, all of these boxes are linked to the Labyrinth, which to some surely appears to be Hell, however, it is far from it. Seeing as the Cenobites and Leviathan, as a whole, do not enjoy or pride themselves on torturing, tormenting, or punishing others: the act of torture is as much sexual as it is ritualistic praise to their God, Leviathan.

LaMarchand's Box, commonly known as the "Lament Configuration", is an intricate and impossible puzzle box that has six configurations it changes into after it cuts someone with a blade that protrudes from it. Each configuration has a name that represents a different desire: Lament ("Life"), Lore ("Knowledge"), Laudarant ("Love"), Liminal ("Sensation"), Lazarus ("Resurrection"), and Leviathan ("Power").

Whosoever holds the Leviathan Configuration after five sacrifices are made is granted an audience with Leviathan and granted one of six desires based on the puzzle box. Roland Voight, who had the puzzle box and manipulated five others to solve it for him, chose Liminal for his reward, but the gift gave him endless pain with a mechanism that impaled his body and manipulated his nerves at random times, causing him agony "just enough so that (he) could never go numb".

Other LeMarchand boxes appear throughout the world, Dr. Philip Channard is an avid collector of LeMarchand's works; he has three on display in his study and later, some of the patients in his institute are seen with them hooked to their faces. The demon princess Angelique is said to have created several.
