Orience is comprised of four nations that, until recently, had coexisted peacefully, each in possession of a Crystal that grants the nation a unique power. The price is memory loss. l'Cie, humans chosen by the Crystals made immortal who can wield the Crystal's power and thus exert their Will in the world, lose most memory of who they were; when a Crystal deems its l'Cie's use over, he or she enters crystal stasis, their soul trapped in crystal. Even the human citizens are forced to forget those who have died, as the Crystals erase all memory of the dead from the living. The memory erasure is generally viewed a blessing that allows mankind to push on without attachments to things that are inevitably lost, but many fear death and being forgotten forever.
Orience comprises a large landmass with the four Crystal-Nations dividing the land in nigh equal amount. The Militesi Empire to the west is the most cold and barren, but also includes an arid desert and valleys to the north of it. Lorican Alliance is mountainous with deep caverns and even a volcano. It is shielded by mountain ranges from most sides. The east, ruled by Concordia, is lush with vegetation, but rainy and cloudy, its citizens electing to live above the perpetually wet ground in raised villages. The south, ruled by Rubrum, is of temperate climate with vast grassy plains.
The oldest Oriencian record predates the discovery of the Crystals, the era known as the dark age. The oldest historic account is from 2000 years ago from an airship's logbook, one of the vessels amid a fleet of dozens in the service of the "Federation". Many infer its primary purpose was military, as the log contains several accounts of combat with some manner of "sky-soldiers" in purported allegiance to the "Republic". The prevailing historical theory holds that these two composite states, Federation and Republic, partook in a battle to claim dominion over Orience.
It's been said that in these dark ages conquest was the only law, and the four sovereign nations each took it upon to create the mightiest army and waged the war to end all wars—the Ultima War.
The modern calendar started with the discovery of the Vermilion Bird Crystal. As the age of the Crystals began, nations were built around the four peristylia. Vermilion Peristylium was the first, Akademeia being built around it as per the Will of the Vermilion Bird Crystal to train Agito Cadets who also protected the peristylium. Twenty-eight years after the Vermilion Dawn, the Black Tortoise Crystal was discovered by an industrious young Lorican named Urshanabi, buried within the sinkhole upon whose precipice Loricans had settled. The boy became the Crystal's protector as its l'Cie, and the Black Peristylium—dedicated to the cultivation of Agito like that of the Vermilion Peristylium—arose shortly thereafter.
The loosely affiliated countries of Rubrum, Togoreth, Iscah, and Eibon were compelled to unify on Ven. XVII, 123 RG as their ideological principles brought them together for the common good. Akademeia was the political heart of this alliance, and when monsters laid siege to the peristylium, the Vermilion Bird l'Cie protected it. Following this incident Akademeia was established as the seat of power, and the dominion was born.
The White Tiger Crystal was discovered in the west and its l'Cie formed the Militesi Empire by conquering the lands of Azurr and Cetme, establishing Ingram as the capital and the White Peristylium at its heart in 178 RG. Ever since its formation the empire and the alliance engaged in war, eventually leading in the invention and mass-production of magitek armor by the empire via the power of the White Tiger Crystal, while the alliance developed means of imbuing the Black Tortoise Crystal's powers in their armaments, the arms race spanning three wars.
The Blue Dragon Crystal governed the Kingdom of Dracobaltia, which was formed in 197. The power of the Blue Dragon Crystal waned after the Dracobaltians consumed its offerings—wyverns—for food, and the Azure Dragon Crystal appeared to replace it, the new Azure Dragon l'Cie banishing the Dracobaltians from the land and establishing the Kingdom of Concordia over the remains of the Dracobaltian kingdom in 273. The kingdom entered in a war against Rubrum that led to the latter developing Eidolons.
Steeled through centuries of war, each Crystal-State had developed formidable fighting forces convincing each head-of-state that unifying Orience under one banner was possible, building momentum toward an all-out war that came to a head in 357. In addition to the arms race, the waning of the Crystals' power drove the four state leaders to expedite their war efforts. The Crystals were the source of all four nations' military strength, but extracting energy from them exacerbated their deterioration.
Fearing the weakening of the Crystals to be permanent, each nation sought to annihilate the others, culminating in the Great Orience War. The Crystals began deteriorating even faster, as each state expended their energy to replenish weapons, armor, and magic, while each Crystal expended its power to defend itself through the creation of l'Cie. As the power of all four Crystals was waning, on Ventusmens IV in the year 359, the four nations ordered a ceasefire and began preparations for a peace treaty, which manifested as the Pax Codex drawn in 361. The codex prohibited the use of l'Cie in war, and outlined regulations for declaring war and capitulation, as well as humanitarian issues, such as treatment of POWs and civilians. In 448 RG, the Fabula Pact was drawn up between each of the four peristylia as a non-aggression pledge.

Dominion of Rubrum has the Vermilion Bird Crystal that contains the power of magic. Its capital is Akademeia and its leader is Chancellor Khalia Chival VI. Akademeia trains Agito Cadets at the behest of the Vermilion Bird Crystal, children who train in the ways of magic and strive to become Agito. One's aptitude to magic wanes as they age, and thus Agito Cadets tend to be teenagers.
The Militesi Empire controls the White Tiger Crystal that contains the power of technology. Its capital is Ingram and its leader is Marshal Cid Aulstyne who took command after the previous emperor disappeared. Cid uses the Crystal to develop advanced weapons to conquer the other Crystal-Nations and gain control of their Crystals.
Lorican Alliance hosts the Black Tortoise Crystal that contains the power of the shield. Bestowed with the power of their Crystal, Loricans grow larger than the citizens of other nations, and usually clad themselves in protective armor that covers them head to toe. Its leader is King Gilgamesh Ashur.
Kingdom of Concordia is a matriarchal nation that holds the Azure Dragon Crystal. The Crystal contains the power of the dragon with its ruler able to communicate with Soryu, a colossal dragon and a Primus l'Cie, said to be the manifestation of the Azure Dragon Crystal itself. Concordia's capital is Mahamayuri and its leader is Queen Andoria Kaya Tranka Fam Forturio. Concordians are diminutive compared to the citizens of other nations and, with the power of the Azure Dragon Crystal, can gain the ability to communicate with and control monsters.

The Dominion of Rubrum is a Crystal-Nation basking in the power of the Vermilion Bird Crystal. The dominion lies to the south of Orience and has a temperate climate, the barren and cold Militesi Empire lying to the west and the humid marshlands of the Kingdom of Concordia lying to the east. The mountain range to the north divides the dominion from the northern Lorican Alliance.
Rubrum is governed by the Consortium of Eight who also lead the magic academy and capital: Akademeia. Khalia Chival VI is the current head of the state and the academy headmaster. Akademeia trains Agito Cadets as per the Will of the Vermilion Bird Crystal, whose peristylium is also located on its premises. The cadets are selected by the Crystal for their magic ability, and following entrance exams are split into appropriate classes.
Rubrum's governing body, the Consortium of Eight, is headed by Akademeia Chancellor Khalia Chival VI. The dominion is the most verdant nation in Orience, boasting the stablest climate. Using the blessing of the Vermilion Bird Crystal, her people have developed their own tools and teknology. Humans are not the only denizens of Rubrum: gentle creatures such as moogles and chocobos also inhabit the dominion, peacefully coexisting with the populace.
The oldest verse of scripture in Akademeia reads: "Unto Orience came the Crystal of the Vermilion Bird, to guide the children of Rubrum and bestow the great task upon them." The "great task" is commonly understood to mean the creation of Agito, and to that end the magic academy of Akademeia was established on an island off a southern coast. Suzaku Empire
Akademeia.
Akademeia started as a small schoolhouse, a sanctuary where a few cadets basked in the light of the Crystal, but as the teachings of the first chancellor spread the school grew. By the year 100 the use of magic had become prevalent and Akademeia conducted research into attack and defense spells analyzing and reformulating new spells that could be taught to the students enrolled as Agito Cadets seeking to actualize their magic potential.
While Rubrum, Togoreth, Iscah, and Eibon were loosely affiliated and shared borders, there were few pressures to unify. However, some six-score years after the foundation of the Vermilion Peristylium, ideological principles brought these states together. Despite Akademeia being the alliance's political heart, little thought had been spared to its defense. When monsters laid siege to the peristylium aid from the satellite states was slow to rise, but the Vermilion Bird l'Cie saved Akademeia. The official establishment of Akademeia as the seat of power, and the concomitant military defenses, would come three years later and on Ventusmens XVII, 123 RG, the dominion was born.
The region of Rubrum came to be synonymous with the dominion as a whole, as all parties were in agreement that Akademeia, to whom the former states paid fealty, was within Rubrum Region, and so the appellation was adopted by all in the interests of political convenience.
In 251 the Kingdom of Dracobaltia to the east of the dominion had expanded its sphere of influence from Rilochy to Roshana and met with Rubrum's forces at the border between Roshana and Eibon. Unconcerned with diplomacy, the Dracobaltians launched to battle against the dominion maintaining an initial advantage with their army of monsters, but due to their lack of organization, the Dracobaltians were unable to do more than force a retreat. Thus, despite their many nominal victories, the Dracobaltian Army made few actual military gains. The dominion, apprised by its enemy's lack of internal cooperation, implemented a divide-and-conquer strategy sending the royal units fleeing in droves and the dominion regained its territory. Vermilion Bird Crystal.
The Vermilion Bird Crystal blessed its citizens with the ability to use magic, the gift passed down by Agito Cadets and cadets-turned-instructors propagating the Will of the Crystal. Once the four Crystal-States had been established, the dominion government followed the example set by the other nations to promote and oversee the blessings of their Crystal, as the denizens of Orience now needed to fear each other as Rubrum had learned from the war with the Dracobaltians.
When news of the Lorican-Militesi War reached Rubrum, the dominion government decided to strengthen its magic faculties to prepare against a potential assault, and the Sorcery Division was founded in 297 as an instance responsible for all magic matters. Its establishment also brought about changes in the organization of the dominion military; previously, the legionaries fought relying on their individual magical prowess, but now that the military could form squads around a single class of magic, units defined by characteristic spells were formed, such as Fire Squad or the Cure Squad.
Although the empire and alliance had been at war nearly since the founding of their respective governments, the kingdom and the dominion had enjoyed a period of peace. As Concordia solidified its military under the direction of the Five-Star Wardens, tensions between the two increased however, and and in 317 the kingdom dispatched a small unit to assault a city in the Eibon Region to test the strength of its dragon commands. Rubrum initiated a counteroffensive, and used the battlefield's close proximity to its advantage, deploying troops from all over the dominion.
The dominion's main force included mage regiments of 1,000 spellcasting soldiers each, and Rubrum deployed thirty-two of these units. The dominion legions dispatched a force of 40,000 troops to drive away the royal army. The Concordian Army deployed four mixed commands, each containing approximately 100 wyverns. Including reserve soldiers and monsters, the kingdom possessed a fighting force of 30,000.
The dominion army suffered casualties in the face of the wyverns' power and, even after calling for reinforcements, barely held its ground. After more than a month of fighting, a succession dispute in Concordia erupted into civil war, and the kingdom's army withdrew from Eibon. FFType-0 Ifrit
Ifrit, an Eidolon.
After its poor performance against the royal wyverns, the dominion began searching for something stronger than the magic they had relied upon until then. Sorcery designated Eidolons as a type of weapon, otherworldly beasts of war that possessed their own intellect and will, and appeared only when summoned from another realm, vanishing after a period of time. Eidolons could only be deployed by forging a covenant via summoning portal, and in exchange for their services, the Eidolon demands the summoners' life energy.
According to legend, as if responding to the dominion's demand for more power, the first Eidolon summoned was even more formidable than a l'Cie. Rubrum deployed it to Lorica where the Eidolon toppled the Black Tortoise l'Cie at the cost of massive amounts of life energy, and the dominion foolishly sacrificed the lives of many innocent legionaries to this end.
Dominion officials sealed away this first Eidolon as anathema, and Rubrum decided to forge covenants with more agreeable beasts of war. The Eidolons secured a spot as the dominion's primary offensive tool, and in the year 339, Rubrum formed its first summoning regiment.
On the border between Milites and Rubrum, the Meroë Region west of Iscah was plagued with conflicts. In 343 a border dispute sparked a war between the two countries. The battle became a contest between magic and mechs, but the dominion's spells had little effect on the empire's magitek armor, and the imperial forces outnumbered the legions. Rubrum's front lines collapsed, and the empire nearly routed the dominion out of Meroë before the dominion's First Independent Summoning Regiment summoned Ifrit and led the dominion to victory.
Steeled and strengthened through centuries of war, each Crystal-State had developed formidable fighting forces convincing each head-of-state of the possibility of unifying Orience under one banner. The waning of the Crystals' power drove the four state leaders to expedite their war efforts, even if extracting energy from the Crystals exacerbated their deterioration. Fearing the weakening of the Crystals to be permanent, each nation sought to annihilate the others.
What became known as the Great Orience War began as a border dispute between the dominion and the empire. Concordia launched an assault on Rubrum's rear guard, and the dominion responded by summoning the Verboten Eidolon Leviathan. While Milites focused on attacking the dominion, Lorica deployed its troops to the empire. Having driven the dominion out of Meroë Region, the empire continued its advance into the Iscah Region. The Lorican king and the Black Paladins left Jubanla Region for Iscah to see how the King's Sword and Armor would fare in combat, special armaments developed with the power of the Black Tortoise Crystal. They were met by the Vermilion Bird l'Cie Kiyosaki who engaged the Lorican king, and it is said that the two warriors died impaled on each other's blades.
As the struggle continued, each nation's Crystal began deteriorating even more rapidly due to the replenishment the weapons, armor, and magic and through the creation of l'Cie. As the power of all four Crystals was waning, on Ventusmens IV in the year 359, the four nations ordered a ceasefire and began preparations for a peace treaty. Pax Codex prohibiting the use of l'Cie in war was drawn up in 361, and in 448 the four peristylia drew up a non-governmental pledge of non-aggression, known as the Fabula Pact. FFT0 Central Command
Central Command.
In 432 the dominion government established a department specializing in military affairs: Central Command, as the Chancellor's obligation was to cultivate Agito, and his responsibilities as headmaster took precedence over his duties as head-of-state. Central Command replaced Akademeia in directing the army and was headed by the newly appointed commandant. Central Command took command of the dominion legions, and assumed responsibility for logistical issues and the development of new armaments. Agito Cadets now existed separately from the legions, and only joined the army for field training.
Central Command and the Akademeia administration established the Armory Guild to strengthen the military by development of new equipment and sanative supplies. In 533, the Second Armory Guild was established for crafting accessories that amplify the user's magic faculties. The Third Armory Guild (which became known as the Chocobo Ranch) was founded to design equipment for chocobos after the formation of Chocobo Squads in the year 689, and a Fourth to develop dominion dreadnoughts.
Once Marshal Cid Aulstyne had seized the Militesi throne, skirmishes began erupting between the empire and the dominion in border cities and villages gradually intensifying until the imperial army razed a dominion village in 841. The Dominion Central Command deployed a task force to assault an imperial city in retaliation. All believed the dispute would continue escalating, but a White Tiger l'Cie appeared near the border—and, fearing another clash between l'Cie—the leaders of both armies quieted their troops.
In 842 the empire devised a three-part campaign to invade the dominion. Brigadier General Qator Bashtar would lead a blitzkrieg attack on the Vermilion Peristylium from the ocean accompanied by the air force and a l'Cie-piloted magitek armor. In the second phase, the empire's main force would invade Iscah, where the dominion's primary defenses are stationed. The legions received orders to report to the capital moments after the battle began and retreated, allowing for the imperial troops to seize the dominion's western half.
The third phase involved deploying a fleet of dreadnoughts to infiltrate the dominion's central and eastern regions. The Rubrum legionaries fled to defend Akademeia, and the empire took over the central and eastern regions of the dominion unimpeded.
The empire's new weapon, the crystal jammer, paralyzes Akademeia, but the clandestine Class Zero, tutored by Akademeia's archsorceress herself, unaffected by the jammer, destroys it restoring power to the Vermilion Bird Crystal. After the cadets defeat the White Tiger Secundus l'Cie Qun'mi Tru'e, Qator withdraws the Militesi troops from Akademeia. However, as all legionaries had rallied at the capital, the rest of the dominion had been left defenseless, and Rubrum loses all of its territory.
Rubrum is located at south to southwest of the Orience map. It typically exhibits traits that of a South East Asian country, spotting hot weather and occasionally heavy misty rains.
Rubrum Region is the main dominion area where the capital, Akademeia, is located on a small island off the coast. Other towns in the area are McTighe, Corsi and Aqvi, with a cave teeming with coeurls near Corsi. To the east lies the Eibon Region with the Eibon military base and the town of Toguagh, and the eastern sand banks on the Innsmouth Region are uninhabited with the Innsmouth Coast being home to the colossal Adamantoises with occasional treasures washing up ashore. Oriense World Map
The dominion territories are red on the map of Orience.
Togoreth Region is to the west with the stronghold of Togoreth as its main location with the town of Keziah situated across a river. The Northern Togoreth Region has the Northern Corridor cave leading to the Jubanla Region on Lorican territory and its Mount Jubanla volcano, the town of Mi-Go the northernmost dominion town in this region.
Iscah Region lies east from Togoreth with the towns of Iscah and Rokol. Meroë Region is the dominion's westernmost region bordering with Milites with the town of Meroë situated near the Bethnel Caverns. Because the region borders the empire there are numerous army bases here.
Dominion towns are a fusion of the technologically advanced cities in Milites and the traditional Concordia, displaying a Victorian-esque style yet with a touch of futurism. Town entrances are guarded by dominion legionaries and the civilians don simple village clothing.
The language spoken in Rubrum appears to be a mix of British English, Chinese, and Japanese dialects. Names appear to have different uses of these dialects, as towns are majorly given English names, with Chinese and Japanese reserved for citizens (Khalia Chival VI being an exception).
While not displaying use of advanced technology Rubrum utilizes magical teleportation portals, particularly in Akademeia. Magic around the dominion is powered by the Vermilion Bird Crystal and Akademeia leads study into the Crystal and develops new magic spells and governs the use of Eidolons.
Rubrum's main academic institution is Akademeia where students are enrolled by their parents to learn about combat and magic. The academy doubles up as a military base, training both military cadets and soldiers. Upon completion in their studies cadets can join the army. With enough experience in war, legionaries are promoted as commanding officers who train cadets and take an active role by leading their soldiers to victory. Alternatively, they may choose to be instructors for the juniors.
Dominion legionaries are typically covered in maroon cloaks, their bodies covered with plated armor and greaves from top to bottom. Female soldiers wear thigh-high stockings whereas male soldiers wear long pants. Although the armies are small in number and not as advanced nor refined as the Militesi or the Concordian armies, Rubrum legions possess a strong will and patriotism, one of the factors that makes Rubrum a force to be reckoned with. FF type 0 6

Rubrum's lack of manpower and minimal firearms are made up with the power of magic and Eidolons the Vermilion Bird Crystal bestows. Soldiers prefer cold weapons over firearms, such as swords, in contrast to Milites, although their proficiency with weapons is not only restricted to that. There are those who choose to wield firearms, such Cater and King from Class Zero. Many, however, choose to fight through the use of magic, which allows for greater mobility.
The military's standard war god is Bahamut capable of taking down airborne enemies through a strong burst of Mega Salvo, although they are susceptible to damage and can be incapacitated. FFT-0 Suzaku Students Defending
In desperate times Agito Cadets are called to fight alongside their superiors to defend their country and the Crystal.
When Milites attempts to take over the other Crystal-Nations, Akademeia's Agito Cadets are enrolled to the military. Although cadets and students can fight for their country, and are often seen as powerful force in missions, as a general rule they are not called to arms unless the legionaries are outnumbered and are required to assist them to defend the citizens. Khalia Chival VI once stated that while the students are willing to die for the country, he tries not to put them at risk, going as far as considering unethical means to defeat their enemy. While chocobos can take down enemies, they serve more as a mobility purpose in combat.
The Rubrum army deploys several airships, although like the chocobos, are mainly meant for the purpose of logistics. During the First Battle of Judecca the dominion makes use of magic cannons fired from the airships. Rubrum's airship fleet is known as the Crimson Wings. The Kisaragi-class cruisers are the most common dreadnoughts in the dominion. Among other types of craft, the Crimson Wings also employs small Yukikaze-class scout ships, large Shikishima-class carries, and high-speed Shimakaze-class corvettes. FF type 0 4
Rubrum's standard airship.
Rubrum's main transports include airships and chocobos that are bred in a ranch separated from Akademeia. Airships are used to carry a legions of soldiers at once, allowing them to raid Militesi military bases. Some soldiers ride their chocobos to war.
Despite the great convenience in transportation, many soldiers prefer to travel on foot.

Milites is a Crystal-State that neighbors the Dominion of Rubrum. The empire's capital is Ingram where the White Peristylium, an organization that conducts research into the energy from the White Tiger Crystal, is located. The power of the White Tiger Crystal is used to create weapons and magitek for both military and domestic affairs.
Milites is location on the cold and barren west of Orience, though the arid and uninhabited desert to the north is also part of its territories. Due to its arctic climate, Milites lacks many natural resources in comparison to the other Crystal-Nations, and relies a lot on its Crystal to provide for the populace. Its capital is the technologically advanced metropolis of Ingram. Due to the climate, imperial citizens usually dress in full winter gear. Their soldiers, meanwhile, are clad head to toe in armor with tiger motifs to their helmets.
Nominally speaking, the Militesi Empire is a totalitarian Crystal-State with an emperor at its helm. However, when the current emperor pulled a mysterious disappearing act, Marshal Cid Aulstyne conveniently stepped in to take control.
Unlike the other nations of Orience, the people of Milites do not serve the White Peristylium. Rather, the White Tiger Crystal exists solely to provide abundant energy to the populace. When Cid Aulstyne seized reins of power, one of his first orders of business was absorbing the Peristylium into the imperial government. As expected, his proposal was met with resistance.
In other nations, only those chosen by their respective Crystal have access to its power. In Milites, however, scientists developed teknology by which they could extract energy from the White Tiger Crystal and harness it to mass-produce guns, magitek armor, and other armaments. Thanks to this nigh unlimited source of power, the empire has succeeded in mobilizing millions of troopers and overwhelming the other Crystal-States with their incredible numbers.
Jörg Paradis was a lowly lord in Azurr who encountered the White Tiger l'Cie in 174, three years before he was to crown himself the Emperor of Milites. He studied Crystal-driven technology leading to the invention of firearms. His subjugation of Azurr was swift, requiring less than a year to demolish decades of civilization. Out of the ashes rose Ingram in the north, the capital chosen to house the White Peristylium as Paradis made his formal declaration of empire. The subsequent conquest of Cetme had the realm take notice, as the expansionist Milites ushered in a new era of force in Orience. FFAgtXIII-Ruins

The mass production of firearms saw the subjugation of the outlands, but imperial expansion also necessitated new technologies. Milites made inroads to Berith and inadvertently engaged the paladins of the Lorican Alliance, suffering casualties in close range combat. In 214, four years prior to the breakout of hostilities, the empire had developed the Crystal (or "C-") Engine—a motor to power mobile artillery. As the first airships were conceived, the advent of mechanization in warfare changed combat forever.
The imperial machines were suits of armor whose cannons tore the Lorican lines to shreds from afar. Imperial forces penetrated the Lorican heartland before the Black Tortoise l'Cie stifled the imperial advance and brought about an armistice. The alliance poured its efforts into combating the Crystal-powered imperial weapons and devised a means of imbuing arms and armor with the Black Tortoise Crystal's energy. The Arms of Agito could fell the formerly invincible imperial war machines, and once enough knightly orders had been outfitted, Lorica declared war on Milites on 301.
The armies again clashed in the sandy region of Berith, and with their new equipment the Loricans overwhelmed the empire. Alliance knights pursued the fleeing imperial troops into their homeland, but were driven out of imperial lands by White Tiger l'Cie, although the knights' Crystal-imbued Arms of Agito saved the alliance army from total destruction. Milites Laboratory

After suffering defeat the empire hastened its development of new weapons. Thanks to their C-Engine, the empire was ahead of the alliance in regard to Crystal energy extraction, and imperial researchers introduced a weapon superior to their tanks and dreadnoughts: magitek armor. The imperial government installed enormous, high-output C-Engines throughout the state to extract energy from the Crystal that distributed the energy to smaller C-Engines, which then used that energy to generate power for the various imperial arms factories. As a result, magitek armor could be mass-produced and the empire sought to test the power of it new mechs.
The Lorican Alliance accepted the Militesi challenge in 315. The Black Paladins took up their Arms of Agito, but could not demonstrate the crushing strength they had shown in the previous war. The alliance army was overwhelmed and the Black Paladins were annihilated. In wars past, the imperial army would have advanced on the Black Peristylium, where the Black Tortoise Crystal would have retaliated with l'Cie. However, because the empire's objective was to test the newly developed MAs, as the alliance army took flight, the empire pulled back.
The border between Milites and Rubrum, the Meroë Region, had been plagued with conflicts, and in 343 RG, one of these border disputes sparked the first war between the two countries. The battle became a contest between magic and mechs, but the dominion's spells had little effect on the empire's magitek armor. The empire nearly routed the dominion out of Meroë before the dominion's First Independent Summoning Regiment called forth Ifrit who drove back the imperial army and led the dominion to victory.
As the Great Orience War commenced Milites focused on attacking the dominion, prompting Lorica to deploy its troops to the empire. Having driven the dominion out of Meroë Region, the empire continued its advance into the Iscah Region. The alliance tried seizing the Berith Region, but the king and the Black Paladins left Jubanla Region for Iscah to see how the King's Sword and Armor would fare in combat: special arms developed with the power of the Black Tortoise Crystal. They were met by the Vermilion Bird l'Cie Kiyosaki who engaged the Lorican King, and the empire lost more than half of its magitek armor fleet in the clash between the king and the l'Cie.
With the alliance approaching from the north, and the imperial fleet in shambles, Militesi territory was vulnerable—but with the help of its l'Cie, the empire escaped the plight. The Crystals began deteriorating even faster due to the replenishment the weapons, armor, and magic, and through the creation of l'Cie.
When the emperor went missing in 832, Marshal Cid Aulstyne took over government affairs as well as the White Peristylium. In truth, the marshal had the emperor imprisoned, and enacted a coup d'etat to become the nation's ruler. The White Tiger Crystal fell into his hands, and the marshal came up with a way to subjugate it and thus enslave its l'Cie. Skirmishes began erupting between the empire and the dominion border cities and villages gradually intensifying until the imperial army razed a dominion village in 841. The Dominion Central Command deployed a task force to assault an imperial city in retaliation. When a White Tiger l'Cie appeared near the border, fearing another clash between l'Cie, the leaders of both armies quieted their troops.
The empire has the largest military in Orience with numerous armies with hundreds of thousands of troops. The army is strengthened by the White Tiger Crystal that augments the imperial armaments. Officers usually stay back and issue commands to their subordinates and provide troopers with various enchantment sera. The empire's fleet of magitek armor often serves as the armored forces' main offensive, and also includes an artillery squad, navy and an air force, as well as advanced weapons like the crystal jammer and the Ultima Bomb.
Some troops are enhanced by special armor created from engineering a device that extracts energy from the Crystal, resulting in augmented supersoldiers. The test soldiers from this project are known as "freaks" as they lost their sanity. Milites captured many Lorican survivors from the remains of their homeland and brainwashed them, transforming them into living weapons of war, reducing them to shells into which the imperial army has poured an insatiable bloodlust. Having lost autonomy, the brainwashed Loricans follow orders without question. The most popular among them is Supersoldier Akkad, one of the Ultima Bomb survivors who tried to protect the Black Tortoise Crystal from falling in the empire's hands. Militesi-sniper-Type0-HD

The imperial military's dreadnoughts are designed as "airborne warships" and have been the empire's primary aerial firepower since the founding of the imperial air force. Unlike the dominion military, the empire uses airships to provide air-to-ground offensive support as well as transport magitek armor and soldiers, so these craft are bigger and more heavily armed than the ones the dominion employs.
At the onset of the war, the empire's main strength was its fleet of Warrior MAs that could handle regular dominion legionaries, but lose against the dominion's Eidolons. In response imperial scientists devised the heavily armored Colossus and the airborne Helldiver MA models, which spurred the development of other models which would aid the anti-dominion offensive, namely the Dáinsleif operated by the l'Cie Qun'mi fitted with a prototype crystal jammer, and the prototype Gabriel, General Qator Bashtar's MA, equipped with a magic shield capable of neutralizing the dominion's spells.
The crystal jammer, invented by Marshal Aulstyne himself, cuts the opposition forces off their Crystal. It does not work against Class Zero whose cadets use magic independent of the Vermilion Bird Crystal. The prototype version could only be operated by a l'Cie, but a more advanced model is later developed that can be operated by mortals.
The Ultima Bomb is the empire's ultimate weapon, able to annihilate entire countries. The bomb detonated over the Black Peristylium was augmented by the l'Cie Qun'mi, and one that explodes over Ingram airspace doesn't seem like it had equivalent power, leading to speculation about the the real potential of the prototype weapon.
Cid Aulstyne leads the Militesi military and can even deploy White Tiger l'Cie to do his bidding as he holds the White Tiger Crystal hostage. Numerous generals work under him to lead the campaigns on the ground.

The Lorican Alliance is a nation in the world of Orience. Its capital is Berith. Lorica controls the Black Tortoise Crystal, which contains the power of the shield. Lorica is located precariously around the ridge of an enormous sinkhole, with legend stating that, due to their founder's daring and risktaking lifestyle, the Black Tortoise Crystal was discovered among its depths. Lorica rose to prominence on the strength of its trade and its aggressive economic diplomacy.
Lorica is located in a harsh mountain region, and its Black Peristylium, situated in a large hole in the ground, manages the Black Tortoise Crystal. Loricans directly take in the power of the Crystal to strengthen their bodies, making them bigger than the people of other countries. Nearly all citizens serve as knights for the military.
In other Crystal-States, the people harness their respective Crystal's energy through magic and magiteknology. The citizens of the Lorican Alliance, however, absorb the power of the Black Tortoise Crystal directly into their flesh. As a result, their bodies are large and powerful, easily able to withstand a slew of spells or an onslaught of ammunition. They have even forged armaments using energy from their Crystal, buried beneath the land and housed within the Black Peristylium, the sole purview of the Lorican King himself. The Lorican people's Black Tortoise Armor allows them to stand tall in the face of even the mightiest Eidolons and magitek armors.
The foundations of the nation were already in place when the Black Tortoise Crystal was discovered by an industrious young Lorican named Urshanabi. The Crystal was discovered buried within the sinkhole upon whose precipice Loricans had settled, some twenty-eight years after the advent of the Vermilion Bird Crystal. The boy became the Crystal's protector as its l'Cie, and the Black Peristylium—dedicated to the cultivation of Agito like that of the Vermilion Peristylium—arose shortly thereafter.
It is said that the warriors of Lorica, renowned for their might and temper, receive the blessings of the Crystal through the anointment of Urshanabi. The Black Peristylium is also where the Council of Lorica resides, as the Alliance was formally founded eighteen years after the Dominion of Rubrum's establishment, on Sil. XXIX, 141 RG.
A formidable challenge to the Lorican claim for power over the region came from over the mountainside in Berith, and the ensuing power struggle engulfed the region. The year 141 wrought devastation upon the lands and people of Berith, and the once-presumptive conquerors found their land forced, and declared open war against Lorica. The Lord of Berith was found dead, and the Crystal-blessed Lorican knights claimed the mountain soon after, founding the Lorican Alliance.
The Militesi Empire, the home of the White Tiger Crystal, developed the Crystal Engine in 214 for use of mechanized warfare. Four years later Milites made inroads to Berith and inadvertently engaged the Lorican paladins, suffering casualties in close range combat. As the first airships were conceived the advent of mechanization in warfare changed combat forever, and the imperial cannons mounted on suits of armor tore the Lorican lines to shreds from afar. Imperial forces penetrated the Lorican heartland before the Black Tortoise l'Cie stifled their advance and brought about an armistice. AllianceSoldierIllustration-fftype0

The alliance poured its efforts into combating the Crystal-powered imperial weapons and to fortify itself against potential future invasions, and to this end Lorican scholars devised a means of imbuing arms and armor with the Black Tortoise Crystal's energy. The Arms of Agito could fell the formerly invincible imperial war machines, but the Crystal alone did not suffice to supply the nation's needs. Under the guidance of the Black Tortoise l'Cie, the alliance distilled shards from the energy emanating from the Crystal. Production for the Arms of Agito became powered by these shards, and the Lorican knights became clad in the superlative equipment.
Once enough knightly orders had been outfitted with Arms of Agito, Lorica declared war on Milites. The armies again clashed in the sandy region of Berith, and with their new equipment the Loricans overwhelmed the empire. Alliance knights pursued the fleeing imperial troops into their homeland, but did not anticipate their encounter with a White Tiger l'Cie. The Black Paladins were driven out of imperial lands, but the knights' Crystal-imbued Arms of Agito saved the alliance army from total destruction at the hands of the l'Cie.
Having succeeded in mass-producing magitek armors with the power of the White Tiger Crystal, the empire sought to test their power and the Lorican Alliance accepted the challenge in 315. Believing their position advantageous, the Black Paladins took up their Arms of Agito and proceeded to the border, beginning the Third Lorican-Militesi War. The alliance army, consisting of knightly orders of only a few dozen warriors each, was overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of the imperial army, and the Black Paladins were annihilated. In wars past, the imperial army would have advanced on the Black Peristylium, where the Black Tortoise Crystal would have retaliated with l'Cie, but because the empire's objective was to test its newly developed MAs, the empire pulled back, and the war came to a close.
In 339 the Dominion of Rubrum, the home to the Vermilion Bird Crystal, that had not previously threatened the alliance, deployed an Eidolon on Lorica, which is said to have defeated a Black Tortoise l'Cie. Eidolons can only be summoned for a time, and the dominion sacrificed too many lives to summon it to make headway into a proper invasion. Loricans-Type-0-HD
Loricans.
Not long after its third war with Milites, Lorica realized its Crystal arms only put it on equal footing with the empire. Unless the alliance gained the upper hand, it was only a matter of time until it would be annexed by the empire. As most wars ended due to the intervention of l'Cie, Lorican craftsmen sought to develop weapons capable of combating them, and in 348 the alliance created two armaments capable of utilizing the Black Tortoise Crystal's power: the King's Sword and the King's Armor. Although either instrument was yet to be tested against a l'Cie in combat, they were superior to any the alliance had seen before, and the craftsmen set out to mass-produce them. Creating these weapons consumed copious energy and the Black Tortoise Crystal's power began to weaken. The Lorican King halted production and the Crystal regained its power, but fearing that producing more arms would cause further deterioration, the King forbade the creation of any more such equipment.
The Kingdom of Concordia launched an assault on Rubrum's rear guard, and the dominion responded by summoning the Verboten Eidolon Leviathan. While Milites focused on attacking the dominion, Lorica deployed its troops to the empire. Having driven the dominion out of Meroë Region, the empire continued its advance into the Iscah Region. The alliance tried seizing the Berith Region, but the king and the Black Paladins left Jubanla Region for Iscah to see how the King's Sword and Armor would fare. They were met by the Vermilion Bird l'Cie Kiyosaki who engaged the Lorican King, and it is said that the two warriors died impaled on each other's blades.
The empire lost more than half of its magitek armor in the clash between the king and the l'Cie. With the alliance approaching from the north, and the imperial fleet in shambles, Militesi territory was vulnerable—but with the help of its l'Cie, the empire escaped the plight. The Pax Codex prohibiting the use of l'Cie in war was drawn up in 361, and in 448 the four peristylia drew up a non-governmental pledge of non-aggression, known as the Fabula Pact. Destruction of Genbu
The empire drops Ultima Bomb on Lorica.
Lorica again comes under attack by Milites in 842. In an all-out war between the Lorican soldiers and Militesi troops, the nation is annihilated by an Ultima Bomb leaving a huge crater in the area of Lorica. The devastation not even leaves behind any ruins to speak of, and the city is removed from sight. Orience receives the news of the nation's fate. The empire excavates the Black Tortoise Crystal from the wreckage despite being opposed by a group of paladins who survived the blast, and the area falls under imperial control. Rumors spread that Lorica vanishing from Orience marks the beginning of Tempus Finis, and that the other Crystal-States' fall would soon follow. Genbucrystaldiscovered

Milites captures many Lorican survivors from the remains of their homeland and brainwashes them, transforming them into living weapons of war, reducing them to shells into which the imperial army has poured an insatiable bloodlust. Having lost all autonomy, the brainwashed Loricans follow orders without question, and are infrequently deployed into battle to fight for the empire.
The king of Lorica is Gilgamesh and Enkidu serves as his royal advisor. Having forgotten who he is or any sight of his previous Focus, Gilgamesh wanders the land aimlessly, stumbling upon the The Clash on Big Bridge (Type-0 event) between the empire and the dominion.
Each Lorican city-state had an organized troop of mounted paladins who converged to create the alliance army. The numbers of each knightly order varied depending on the size of their respective cities. Small villages would provide as few as fifty paladins, whereas Lorica—the largest of the city-states—boasted a total of 20,000 knights. More than 100 of these organizations existed throughout the alliance, and the entire army totaled 300,000 warriors. Their armaments are strengthened with the power of the Black Tortoise Crystal, although the specialist arms that directly siphon power from the Crystal are no longer allowed for use in fear of weakening the Crystal itself.
The paladins were led by the king who has been known to partake in battle. During the Great Orience War the king of that time held his own against a Vermilion Bird l'Cie, although the battle ended in a draw with both parties killed.
After the alliance is annihilated by the Militesi Ultima Bomb, its army is obliterated. Some survivors were taken away by Militesi to be brainwashed and are used by the empire for experiments to produce supersoldiers.

The Kingdom of Concordia is a nation that holds the Azure Dragon Crystal. Its capital is Mahamayuri. The kingdom was originally known as the Kingdom of Dracobaltia.
The Concordian people use their Crystal to communicate with dragons and monsters for aid in daily life and to strengthen their military. Concordians are shorter than the denizens of other nations in Orience, never growing beyond 5 feet tall.
Top posts in the Concordia government, save for the King of Concordia, are held by women; Queen Andoria is the only one who can communicate with the Queen Dragon, the physical representation of the Crystal itself. There are five orders of elite knights who protect the Azure Peristylium. One of them is the Akatoki under Celestia, with Yuzuki among its members.
Home to the Azure Dragon Crystal, the Kingdom of Concordia is a matriarchal nation. From the queen herself down to the lowest-ranking bureaucrats, all important government positions are filled by women. Queen Andoria rules over the land, guarding the Azure Peristylium and sharing the Will of its Crystal with her people.
It is that selfsame Crystal which grants Concordians the ability to communicate with wyverns and other creatures. This power serves the populace well in their daily lives, and military applications of the Azure Dragon's blessing have provided the kingdom with enough power to hold its own against the other three Crystal-States. Given that the Concordians never grow taller than a few feet, they prefer commanding monsters to fight on their behalf. When they are forced to join the fray, however, the kingdom's dracoknights make use of their innate speed to run circles around their enemies, then pierce their foes with long spears.
The territory of the Azure Dragon was originally known as Blue Dragon. Contact with the Blue Dragon Crystal and its l'Cie had instilled the ability to command beasts in the otherwise unremarkable people of Rilochy, who became known as Dracobaltians. The kingdom expanded its sphere of influence from Rilochy to Roshana and met with the forces of the neighboring Dominion of Rubrum at the border between Roshana and Eibon Region. The dominion implemented a divide-and-conquer strategy, sending the royal units fleeing, reclaiming its territory. According to legend, the Dracobaltians asked for more power from the Blue Dragon Crystal and gained the ability to command wyverns. Unable to appreciate them as sentient beings, the dragons were slaughtered for food during shortages, and the Blue Dragon Crystal lost power.
Because the male progenitors of the Blue Dragon people had consumed dragons' flesh, the male descendants were cursed to turn into monsters themselves. The female descendants, unaffected by the curse, took over the country in the year 252 under the name Azure Dragon, a new Crystal that had appeared to restore the balance in Orience and replace the Blue Dragon Crystal. Concordia became a matriarchy.
The new Azure Dragon Crystal designated its l'Cie to create the Cursemire of Naraku and seal away the Dracobaltians for eternity, and the Kingdom of Dracobaltia and its Blue Dragon Crystal vanished from Orience. Realizing that the Dracobaltians had failed to develop their Crystal-State due to their lust for power, the Azure Dragon Crystal had its l'Cie establish a country: in the year 271, the l'Cie Cuprine authored the laws of the Azure Dragon and founded the matriarchal Kingdom of Concordia.
To defend the queen, Iunia formed a royal guard with the Five-Star Wardens at its head. Hespera constructed towns and villages that later became the foundation of the present-day Concordia. Finally, the l'Cie Vesta erected a palace in the land of Mahamayuri and declared it the royal capital.[note 1] Once Concordia had laid the foundation of the kingdom, it set out to build up a military. Because the Azure Dragon Crystal had the same power as the Blue Dragon, Concordia formed its armed forces around monsters and wyverns, albeit with a different structure: whereas the Dracobaltian Army had had no clear chain of command, each military unit fighting on its own judgment, the Concordian Army assigned each unit to the command of the leaders of the Five-Star Royal Guard, each of whom answered directly to the queen, and the royal army adopted the use of military ranks common in other nations.
As Concordia solidified its military under the direction of the Five-Star Wardens, tensions with the dominion increased. In 317 Concordia dispatched a small unit to assault a city in the Eibon Region to test the strength of its dragon commands. Rubrum initiated a counteroffensive, and deployed troops from all over the dominion to the Eibon Region. The dominion legions dispatched a force of 40,000 troops to drive out the royal army. The Concordian Army deployed four mixed commands, each containing approximately 100 wyverns. Including reserve soldiers and monsters, the kingdom possessed a fighting force of 30,000. The dominion army suffered casualties in the face of the wyverns' power and, even after calling for reinforcements, barely held their ground. After more than a month of fighting, a succession dispute in Concordia erupted into civil war, and the kingdom's army withdrew.
Steeled through centuries of war, each Crystal-State had developed formidable fighting forces convincing each head-of-state of the possibility of unifying Orience under one banner. The waning of the Crystals' power drove the four state leaders to expedite their war efforts, even if extracting energy from the Crystals exacerbated their deterioration. Fearing the weakening of the Crystals to be permanent, each nation sought to annihilate the others. What became known as the Great Orience War began as a border dispute between the dominion and the Militesi Empire. Concordia launched an assault on Rubrum's rear guard, and the dominion responded by summoning the Verboten Eidolon, Leviathan.
As Milites annihilates the Lorican Alliance in the year 842 and turns its focus on invading the dominion, the kingdom lends its passive support to Rubrum. Concordia helps the dominion regain the strategically important Togoreth Stronghold, although the fort itself ends up destroyed in a battle between Vermilion Bird and White Tiger l'Cie. Afterward, the royal army proposes a joint offensive against the strategically located North Togoreth town of Mi-Go. The dominion Central Command is tempted, but the commandant is reluctant to reveal the dominion's strategies to the kingdom. Rubrum accepts the proposition with the condition that all legionaries and Agito Cadets participating in the mission refrain from using magic or from performing special squad maneuvers. Thanks to the assistance of its Concordian allies, Rubrum reclaims Mi-Go.
Concordians revere dragons as the manifestations of the Azure Dragon Crystal. Though most of Orience speaks one language, Concordians command wyverns in Soryusian. While the common Orience language boasts a superior vocabulary and ease of expression, Soryusian is an intentionally simple language. By limiting the number of phrases, dragoniers and other Concordians can communicate orders to dragons with little room for misunderstandings.
The Concordian Army comprises of the monarch's Five-Star Royal Guard and the dracoknight forces and the monsters they command. The dracoknight forces are divided into three classes: second and third class are equivalent to privates, while the first class equates to what other nations refer to as "noncoms". The dracoknights are prideful warriors, as even if they can manipulate monsters, they prefer to attack with their own spears. Officers are divided into marshal, general, brigadier, colonel, lieutenant colonel, major, captain, second lieutenant, and officer cadet.
Wyverns comprise the core of the royal army, constituting over 90% of the Concordian forces. The army consists of two types of units: dragon-led mixed commands of monsters and dracoknights, and elite dragon-only commands assigned solely to the Fire-Star Wardens for emergency use.
Wingverns form the core of the royal army, a fixture in every one of the kingdom's dragon platoons. A close relative of the Wingvern, the Skyverns, are deployed with a selected number of regular units: the Kingdom Central Command assigns the majority of them to accompany the Five-Star Royal Guard. Diepverns are high-ranking dragons deployed with a mere handful of units because of their inability to fly, but they compensate for their lack of mobility by controlling the climate summoning downpours and blizzards and heat waves. The Brontovern is its closely related but physiologically superior cousin, and is even rarer, belonging exclusively to the Concordian Royal Guard. The strongest regular dragon in the royal forces is the Flyvern whose riders hold prominent positions in the Concordian military, and thus often serve as or fight directly under royal commanders. Kingdom Central Command deploys an even more deadly breed of Flyvern known as the "Atmosvern" to guard the holy capital city of Mahamayuri.
Regular forces are organized by region. Each varies in scope, but generally a command consists of 100 wyverns, 2000 monsters, and 4000 dracoknights. The kingdom's military includes approximately 100 commands. Because of its numbers mobilizing each command takes time.
The wardens of the Five-Star Royal Guard inherit their positions and play a role in all governmental affairs. Of the Five-Star divisions the house of Akatoki under its Warden Celestia handles all military operations in conflicts against other Crystal-States. Other divisions play unique roles in upholding the kingdom.
l'Cie do not usually partake in military affairs, but the First Battle of Judecca marks a unique turn when two Concordian l'Cie aid the royal army in battle.

Its most influential member is the doctor and archsorceress Arecia Al-Rashia of the Sorcery Division. Its other members include the commandant Suzuhisa Higato of the Central Command, the cadetmaster Miotsk Aufmachyt of the Administration Division, the provost Zaidou Tekise of the Scholastics Division, and the commissar Tazuru Kisga of the Logistics Division.
The Cadetmaster - The Consortium of Eight
The highest governing power in the Dominion of Rubrum, the consortium is headed by Chancellor Khalia Chival VI.
The eight seats represent the following divisions: -Central Command -Sorcery -Interior -Diplomacy -Chronicles -Logistics -Scholastics -Administration
At the time the administration first established the consortium as Akademeia's governing body, Central Command did not yet exist. Instead, the eighth seat was filled by a l'Cie--one who rarely attended official meetings. Eventually, the head of Central Command replaced the l'Cie in order to carry out resolutions on behalf of all Rubrum, and thus the current Consortium of Eight was born. The two empty seats of the eleven in the council room are reserved for a l'Cie and a representative from the Intel Division when they choose to attend.
The consortium was established the year 270 to govern magical affairs. After the Militesi Empire begins its campaign to claim the dominion in 842, they conquer most of the dominion regions and deploy a crystal jammer to Akademeia to cut the Rubrumite forces off their Vermilion Bird Crystal, rendering them vulnerable. On the last minute the Agito Cadets personally tutored by Arecia Al-Rashia of the Sorcery Division are deployed to take down the crystal jammers, as the youths have been augmented by her to withstand the jammer's effect. The cadets' involvement is top secret until the last minute. When the commandant hears the cadets are to join the liberation they are delivered a COMM by a legionary soldier to link them with Operation HQ, the mission being approved by the chancellor himself. The cadets destroy the jammers and drive a White Tiger Secundus l'Cie from Akademeia, liberating the city. Consortium-Meeting-Type-0-HD

The consortium is called to decide the next step. Arecia arrives to the meeting late, informing the others that though they don't have much information on the empire's crystal jammer, its operator l'Cie seems to have disappeared. The cadetmaster asks if the legionaries can be augmented with the same magiteknology that allows Arecia's Class Zero wield magic independent of the Vermilion Bird Crystal, but she denies, saying they should just deploy the Agito Cadets instead.

One of the four Crystals of Orience. It is controlled by the Dominion of Rubrum and bestows the power of magic.
The Vermilion Bird Crystal is one of the four Crystals of Orience, and bestows the Power of Magic, granting its people the ability to harness the forces of nature to their whim. It glows red and is associated with the element of fire. The Dominion of Rubrum was built to adopt the Crystal and its power and thus has become the nation known for its expertise and proficiencies in the mystical arts, including the summoning of Eidolons. The Crystal's gift is passed down by Agito Cadets and succeeding generations, leading instructors propagating the Will of the Crystal. The Sorcery Division of Akademeia studies the Crystal and wills to enhance and utilize the magic power it grants, the division's quarters and Crystal itself being located in the heart of Akademeia. The floor around the Crystal has the same pattern with roman numerals to XIII inside clockwork gears as the background for the Rubicus. Vermilion-Bird-Crystal-Type-0-HD
The Vermilion Bird Crystal.
The Crystal usually chooses cadets from Akademeia, the magic academy of Rubrum, to become its l'Cie. The dominion denizens revere and trust in the Crystal as the nation's benefactor and view the Vermilion Bird l'Cie as heroes.
The oldest exact verse of scripture in Akademeia is: "Unto Orience came the Crystal of the Vermilion Bird, to guide the children of Rubrum and bestow the great task upon them." The "great task" is commonly understood to mean the creation of Agito, and it is to that end that Akademeia was established. Akademeia started out small, but grew into a large military academy with numerous classes of cadets all competing to become Agito.
The Vermilion Dawn is said to be when the Vermilion Bird Crystal was discovered, at Gel. XIII, 1 RG. It was the first Crystal discovered, and the start of the modern calendar. Akademeia was built around the Vermilion Peristylium and was, at first, single schoolhouse, a quiet sanctuary where a few cadets might bask in the light of the Crystal. As the teachings of the first chancellor spread, so did the size of the school. Vermilion-Bird-Crystal-Speaks-Type-0-HD
The Crystal seeks a l'Cie.
By the year 100, the use of magic had become so prevalent Akademeia was responsible for both research and enrichment. The use of spells was taught to individuals enrolled as Agito Cadets who sought to actualize their magic potential, forming the basis of the modern Akademeia. The Vermilion Bird Crystal branded l'Cie who would protect the peristylium from monsters, and on Ventusmens XVII, 123 RG, the dominion was established.
Centuries ago, in around the year 270, the Vermilion Bird Crystal chose a l'Cie called Mizu'a and a l'Cie called Kayahara with a Focus of protecting it. As the nation of Rubrum served the Crystal as "her chosen people", and the Consortium of Eight was established to govern magical affairs, the l'Cie's Foci were fulfilled.
The Vermilion Bird Crystal blessed the dominion citizens with the ability to use magic, the gift passed down by Agito Cadets and cadets-turned-instructors propagating the Will of the Crystal. The state played no part in managing the transmission of magic in the dominion.
Once the four Crystal-States had been established, the dominion government had to follow the example set by the other nations, promoting and overseeing the blessings of the Crystal. No longer living in constant fear of monsters, the denizens of Orience faced a more terrifying breed of foe: each other. The dominion government thought it wise to strengthen its magic faculties to prepare against a potential assault, and in 297 Akademeia founded the Sorcery Division whose first order of business was to classify magic spells by type and unify their standards so anyone with magical ability could cast spells at will.
In the year 316 the Vermilion Bird Crystal tasked the l'Cie Yuka to surreptitiously cast the Concordian court into chaos.
What became known as the Great Orience War ravaged the world in a global scale, and each nation's Crystal began deteriorating even more rapidly due to the replenishment the weapons, armor, and magic and through the creation of l'Cie. The Vermilion Bird Crystal deployed its l'Cie Kiyosaki to defend Iscah where he clashed with the king of Lorica, both perishing. As the power of all four Crystals was waning, on Ventusmens IV in the year 359, the four nations ordered a ceasefire and began preparations for a peace treaty. The capital is liberated, but the empire takes hold of many areas previously occupied by Rubrum. Rubrum sets out to reclaim the lost areas and during the campaign rumors of the Vermilion Bird l'Cie Lord Zhuyu being on the move spread, surprising many as the l'Cie don't usually intervene in mortal affairs.

An apocalyptic event. It is the time when the world of Orience is faced with destruction and the Agito, a prophesied savior, is said to arrive. The entry of the Ultima War within the Annals of Orience appears to provide foreshadowing to the world's end. The Nameless Tome is an ancient book said to predict the coming of Agito and Tempus Finis.
Finis is the point when the plans of Arecia Al-Rashia and Gala are supposed to come to fruition at the end of each cycle of time. While Arecia uses the Agito, chosen human souls, to try and open the Unseen Gate, Gala uses his Rursus Army to slaughter the people of Orience in an attempt to trigger a flood of souls to force the Gate open.
The Gate is the barrier between the mortal world and the unseen realm of the dead, said to be operated by the goddess Etro and found only by the deceased on their way to the other side. Following their divine orders, Arecia and Gala attempt to locate and open the Gate. Each time the two failed, Orience would be consumed by Tempus Finis, time reverting to the beginning of the cycle, continuing for 600,104,972 times. Gala brands his chosen as the Rursan Arbiter, who is said to make the Final Decision on the world's fate and test those seeking to become Agito.
In each cycle within the spiral of history, Tempus Finis is instigated in the Oriencian calendar year 842, when "9 and 9 meet 9" (when three nations of Orience are conquered by the fourth and the cycle of death and rebirth collapses). When Finis arrives, several drastic environmental changes occur: the sky and sea turn red, choked with dark clouds. An ominous sound like a rumbling wind is also present. Along with the arrival of the Rursan Army, strange monsters spawn. A temple, Pandæmonium, rises from sea off the coast of Rubrum where the Judge waits to test those wanting to become Agito. The only constant source of bright light appears to be over the palace, where a fiery depiction of Etro's gate shines amid rotating clockwork gears. Airships can't approach it, and only l'Cie are said to be able to reach the temple.

Akademeia is the capital of the Dominion of Rubrum. It is the place of the Vermilion Peristylium that houses the Vermilion Bird Crystal and primarily serves as an academy for training Agito Cadets. It is located on an island connected to the mainland by a bridge and serves as the home base for Class Zero, the Consortium of Eight, and the Dominion's leader, Chancellor Khalia Chival VI.
The oldest exact verse of scripture in Akademeia is perhaps the most open to interpretation: "Unto Orience came the Crystal of the Vermilion Bird, to guide the children of Rubrum and bestow the great task upon them." The "great task" referred to herein is commonly understood to mean the creation of Agito, and it is to that end that Akademeia was established.
The grand halls we know now were initially naught but a single schoolhouse, a quiet sanctuary where a few cadets might bask in the light of the Crystal as they sought enlightenment. Yet as the teachings of the first chancellor spread, so did the size of that humble schoolhouse.
By the year 100, the use of magic had become so prevalent that Akademeia was now responsible for both research and enrichment. Attack spells, which fell monsters and destroy obstacles, as well as defense spells, which heal the wounded, would be analyzed and reformulated day and night. This could then be taught to individuals enrolled as Agito Cadets who sought to actualize their full magic potential, thereby forming the basis of the Akademeia we have come to know. How a simple, cryptic verse could alter the course of so many lives is indeed nothing short of remarkable.
Established to bring the legendary savior Agito into the world, Akademeia was organized into an educational facility for potential candidates known as Agito Cadets. The students were divided into thirteen core units, known as "classes," from the newly formed Class Zero on to Class Twelfth. In addition, Akademeia housed a reserve class of trainees, students who had not fulfilled the requirements to be promoted to cadet. The Sorcery, Scholastics and Logistics Divisions, along with Administration and Armory, were formed to train, support, and educate the student body.
The dominion legions originally existed for the purpose of these fledgling cadets, but with Orience constantly at war, the military branch of Akademeia tended to have considerable influence in administrative matters. Mobilization, arms production and deployment of soldiers were crucial components of the country's infrastructure—and with all those aspects under his command, the commandant enjoyed more authority than the Chancellor of Akademeia in regard to national administration.
This political structure coincided with both the Akademeia administration's desire to devote themselves to cultivating Agito, and Central Command's wish to manage the military without interference. As long as the war did not escalate, the country ran smoothly. The war did escalate, however, and Akademeia was drawn into the fray. With the cadets now assigned to its charge, the military's authority increased even further, and the balance of power was reversed as Akademeia was slowly subsumed as a part of the dominion legions.
Akademeia precedes the formation of Dominion of Rubrum. The school was formed around the Vermilion Peristylium to train cadets to become Agito, the fabled savior of Orience, as per the wish of the Vermilion Bird Crystal, but the academy grew over time. When monsters attacked Akademeia and the onslaught was only quelled by the Vermilion Bird l'Cie, the previously loosely affiliated states of Rubrum, Togoreth, Iscah and Eibon unified to form the Dominion of Rubrum with Akademeia as its seat of power to protect the Crystal.
The Vermilion Bird Crystal blessed its citizens with the ability to use magic, the gift passed down by Agito Cadets and cadets-turned-instructors propagating the Will of the Crystal. Once the four Crystal-States had been established, the dominion government followed the example set by the other nations to promote and oversee the blessings of their Crystal, as the denizens of Orience now needed to fear each other as Rubrum had learned from the war with the Kingdom of Dracobaltia. When news of the Lorican-Militesi War reached Rubrum, the dominion government decided to strengthen its magic faculties to prepare against a potential assault, and Akademeia's Sorcery Division was founded in 297 as an instance responsible for all magic matters. The empire disables the Vermilion Bird Crystal via their crystal jammer and thus nullifies Akademeia's magic barrier. Cadets who would later be known as Class Zero are deployed to take it down. Ace requests a dominion legionary named Izana Kunagiri be deployed to deliver his team a COMM, but Izana and his chocobo Chichiri fall in battle. Ingram is the capital of Militesi Empire and is where the White Peristylium and the Steelworks manufacturing plant are located. The White Peristylium is an organization that conducts research into the energy of the White Tiger Crystal led by Marshal Cid Aulstyne. The energy that powers the imperial teknology comes from the White Tiger Crystal, allowing Milites to build a city of such a grand scale as Ingram. Its different districts are numbered rather than named.
Jörg Paradis was a lowly lord in Azurr who encountered the White Tiger l'Cie in 174, three years before he crowned himself Emperor of Milites. His study in crystal-driven technology led to the invention of firearms. His subjugation of Azurr was swift and merciless, and out of the ashes rose Ingram in the north, the capital chosen to house the White Peristylium as Paradis made his formal declaration of empire. Ingram has served as the Militesi capital ever since. Nimbus-Appears-Type-0-HD

The Agito is a messiah prophesied in ancient mythology to appear at the time of Tempus Finis, an apocalyptic calamity. The legend of the Agito is written in the Nameless Tome.
Agito is a mythical figure tied to the plans of the world's deities, who seek to find and open the gateway between the mortal world and the unseen realm. Agito is someone who can interact and pass between the realms. Finding Agito and using the power of those who make it up is archsorceress Arecia Al-Rashia's means of finding the gateway, in opposition of Gala's method of slaughtering the population of Orience and breaking the gateway down with a flood of souls.
According to the Nameless Tome, sixteen "constellations" were found at the same time. The Sixteen will arrive in the world at a certain moment in the form of human beings, to see if they have the strength to prevent Finis and open the gateway.
Through the repeating cycles the people chosen to be the Agito vary, but they appear always to be students of Akademeia, the magical center in the Dominion of Rubrum.
One of the concepts tied up with Agito is the Locus of Ten and Six: this means that in theory, sixteen elements of humanity are needed to create Agito, with their different aspects forming a part of the whole. This is referred to in the Rubicus, which tells of sixteen "constellations" that would arrive in human form to try to become Agito. [1]
It appears the Crystals of Orience vie for the Agito to be born of each one of their ilk and brand humans to become l'Cie to this end. Tempus Finis is initiated once one Crystal controls all of Orience, at which point Pandæmonium will rise. It is said only l'Cie can travel there, and the Judge residing in the sanctuary is to decide their worthiness to become Agito, or else Orience will be destroyed and the spiral is restarted in wait for a new Tempus Finis. However, the spiral revolves over 600 million times without result.

The Azure Dragon Crystal (蒼龍クリスタル, Sōryū Kurisutaru?) is one of the four Crystals of Orience. It is held by the Kingdom of Concordia and bestows the power of the dragon. Concordians never grow taller than five feet, but enlist monsters and command wyverns to fight in the royal army. Those who do fight in the military do so as Dracoknights, and use their small stature and speed to engage the enemy and run rings around them. Soryu, a colossal wyvern and the Crystal's Primus l'Cie, is said to be the incarnation of the Azure Dragon Crystal itself.
According to legend, the Azure Dragon Crystal appeared to overthrow the Blue Dragon Crystal of the Kingdom of Dracobaltia to the east of Orience. The Blue Dragon Crystal had granted its citizens the power to command monsters and wyverns, manifestations of the Crystal itself, but unable to appreciate the gift, the Dracobaltians had slaughtered the wyverns for food during famines and the Crystal's power declined. The balance between the Crystals shaken, the Azure Dragon Crystal appeared to replace the Blue Dragon Crystal, and had its l'Cie create the Cursemire of Naraku where the Dracobaltians, cursed now to become monsters themselves, were banished for an eternity. FFT0 Soryu
Soryu, the Azure Dragon Primus l'Cie.
Realizing the Dracobaltians had failed to develop their Crystal-State because of their lust for power, the Azure Dragon Crystal had its l'Cie establish a country. In the year 271, the l'Cie Cuprine authored the laws of the Azure Dragon and founded the matriarchal Kingdom of Concordia. The l'Cie Iunia formed a royal guard with the Five-Star Wardens at its head to protect the queen. l'Cie Hespera constructed towns and villages, which later became the foundation of the present-day Concordia, and the l'Cie Vesta erected a palace in the land of Mahamayuri and declared it the royal capital.
Soryu is one of the only non-human l'Cie. Through its ascension to demigod status, this wyvern came to be known as the reincarnation of the Azure Dragon itself.
During the Great Orience War, each nation's Crystal began deteriorating even more rapidly due to the replenishment of weapons, armor, and magic, and through the creation of l'Cie. As the power of all four Crystals was waning, on Ventusmens IV in the year 359, the four nations ordered a ceasefire and began preparations for a peace treaty.

The Black Tortoise Crystal (玄武クリスタル, Genbu Kurisutaru?) is one of the four Crystals of Orience. It is held by the Lorican Alliance and bestows the power of the shield and sword. Like all Crystals of Orience, it can brand people to become its l'Cie and give them a Focus.
Through absorbing the effect of the Crystal into their flesh, the people of Lorica are much larger in stature compared to the citizens of other nations, bestowing them great strength and physical ability. Although they are a nation of warriors and fighters, not all of them engage in combat. The king of Lorica, a l'Cie himself, has an armory of weapons created with the Crystal's power for his personal use.
The foundations of the Lorican Alliance were already in place when an industrious young Lorican named Urshanabi discovered the Black Tortoise Crystal buried within the sinkhole upon whose precipice Loricans had settled, some 28 years after the discovery of the Vermilion Bird Crystal. Lorica Peristylium
The Black Peristylium.
Under the Crystal's watchful eye, the nation grew industrious and flourished in trade and economic diplomacy. The Militesi Empire, the home of the White Tiger Crystal, developed the Crystal Engine in 214 for use of mechanized warfare. Four years later, Milites made inroads to Berith and engaged the Lorican paladins, suffering casualties in close range combat. The advent of mechanization in warfare changed combat forever, and the imperial cannons mounted on suits of armor tore the Lorican lines to shreds from afar. Imperial forces penetrated the Lorican heartland before the Black Tortoise l'Cie stifled their advance and brought about an armistice.
The alliance poured its efforts into combating the Crystal-powered imperial weapons and to fortify itself against potential future invasions. To this end, Lorican scholars devised a means of imbuing arms and armor with the Black Tortoise Crystal's energy. The Arms of Agito could fell the formerly invincible imperial war machines, but the Crystal alone did not suffice to supply the nation's needs. Under the guidance of the Black Tortoise l'Cie, the alliance distilled shards from the energy emanating from the Crystal. As production for the Arms of Agito became powered by these shards, the Lorican knights became clad in the superlative equipment. After Milites developed the magitek armor, however, the Lorican edge was lost.
In 339 the Dominion of Rubrum, the home to the Vermilion Bird Crystal, that had not previously threatened the alliance, deployed an Eidolon on Lorica, which defeated a Black Tortoise l'Cie. Eidolons can only be summoned for a time, and the dominion sacrificed too many lives to call it forth to make headway into a proper invasion.
Not long after its third war with Milites, Lorica realized its Crystal arms only put it on equal footing with the empire. Unless the alliance gained the upper hand, it was only a matter of time it would be annexed. As most wars ended due to the intervention of l'Cie, Lorican craftsmen sought to develop weapons to combat them, and in 348 the alliance created two armaments capable of utilizing the Black Tortoise Crystal's power: the King's Sword and the King's Armor.
What became known as the Great Orience War began as a border dispute between the dominion and the empire, prompting Lorica to deploy its troops against the empire. As Milites advanced into the Iscah Region the king and the Black Paladins left Jubanla Region for Iscah to see how the King's Sword and Armor would fare. They were met by the Vermilion Bird l'Cie Kiyosaki who engaged the Lorican King, and the two died impaled on each other's blades.
When the empire attacks the Lorican Alliance, it detonates its ultimate weapon, the Ultima Bomb, on the Black Peristylium, obliterating it. News spread that some of the Black Tortoise l'Cie were turned to Cie'th for failing to protect the Crystal. The king of Lorica, Gilgamesh Ashur, is said to have perished in the attack from Milites, but in truth, he wanders Orience having lost the sight of his Focus. The imperial army dispatches several units to the ruins of the Lorican Alliance to seize the Black Tortoise Crystal. Believing the entire population annihilated, Imperial Central Command anticipated a bloodless occupation. Yet, the empire was met with a small group of surviving paladins who put forth a valiant effort before ultimately falling to the imperial forces. The remaining survivors are reported executed, but in truth some end up in Militesi hands as test subjects, such as Supersoldier Akkad. Genbucrystaldiscovered
The empire recovers the Crystal.
It is unknown what happens to the Crystal after it fell into imperial hands, but when Tiz reports to Arecia Al-Rashia after Class Zero has perished, she describes it as "lost in desolation". Some theorize the empire wants to siphon power from the Crystal because the light of the empire's own White Tiger Crystal is waning, but others doubt this being the true reason behind the imperial aggression, as they keep on their objective even after having obtained the Black Tortoise Crystal.
Unlike the l'Cie of other nations, the l'Cie of the Black Tortoise Crystal do not appear to have traveled to Pandæmonium during Tempus Finis. A Cie'th-type Gilgamesh appears in one of the rooms in Pandæmonium, so the Black Tortoise l'Cie may have traveled to Pandæmonium in previous spirals.

Agito Cadets (アギト候補生, Agito Kōhosei?), or simply Cadets (候補生, Kōhosei?), are trainees of Akademeia of the Dominion of Rubrum in Final Fantasy Type-0 and Final Fantasy Agito. They are trained in the use of magic as per the wish of the Vermilion Bird Crystal, whose peristylium the cadets are sworn to serve. The Crystal chooses its l'Cie from their ranks, its goal that come Tempus Finis, the l'Cie would enter the Land of Judgment and become Agito, saving Orience.
Cadets are assigned to twelve classes that specialize in different combat duties. Gifted cadets can be transferred to the clandestine Class Zero, the thirteenth and elite class.
After the formation of the dominion and its military, the cadets began to enmesh with the legions. Although Agito Cadets were not officially affiliated with Rubrum's military, they were required to participate in routine combat training to hone their abilities. Several cadets also gained in-the-field experience through participation in remote, small-scale operations.
After Milites invades Rubrum, Agito Cadets officially join the ranks of the dominion legions. The Central Command decides that, due to the cadets' limited numbers, each unit would consist of ten to twenty cadets attached to an infantry regiment. Each team would receive an additional support unit, forming an independent composite brigade.
Legion officials struggled directing these small-yet-powerful squads, and the administration assigned Akademeia instructors as the cadets' commanding officers who give out mission orders. The military views the cadet units as powerful, highly mobile squads.
The basic cadet uniform consists of a black jacket and white pants for males, and a red plaid skirt and a black jacket for females. Both sexes wear mantles with a gold ring that has a phoenix, and gold pauldrons with an indent on the inner edge marked with a gear pattern, a recurring symbol in Rubrum. The mantle's color depends on the student's class; e.g. Class Zero has red mantles, Class First has blue mantles, and so on. Trainees wear gray mantles. The mantles are said to analyze the cadets' biological data and provide information on how to treat injuries incurred in the field. Most students customize their uniform to suit their own personal style and/or for practicality in combat.
Members of Class Zero, along with Tiz and Joker, are also depicted as wearing the long hooded overcoats worn by the dominion legionaries; it is unknown if these coats are standard issue for all Akademeia students. The summer uniform consists of a short-sleeved white shirt, black gloves, and capes, with a black tie and dark pants for male students and a black vest, bow tie, and black skirt for females. The formal uniform is an alternate coloring of the students' standard uniforms; Class Zero cadets wear red coats with black cuffs, white mantles, and white gloves, with black pants for male students and black skirts for females.
Aside from Class Zero, there are twelve classes that specialize in different duties for battle, along with a group designated for trainees. Classes are identified by the color of the mantles worn by its cadets, and each class moogle represents the characteristics of its assigned class.[1] Contrary to popular belief, the twelve classes do not represent job classes. Instead, they have various specialties, with some classes sharing similar duties, and other classes just being known for the types of students they enroll.
To become a cadet one must pass a written exam, a practical exam and an interview, all of which demand exceptional talent and effort. Becoming a cadet has many perks, as even if their magic ability diminishes with age, cadet experience can help secure a position in many fields

Class Zero is the premier class of Agito Cadets. Its members consist of fourteen cadets from Akademeia, the magic academy of the capital of the Dominion of Rubrum. Kurasame Susaya is the class's commanding officer while Moglin is its class moogle. The Class Zero uniform is a black jacket with gold-padded shoulders, white pants for males and a red tartan skirt for females, and a red cape. The imperials pejoratively call the cadets "red demons" (朱の魔人, Aka no Majin?), deferentially referring to their use of magic, proficiency in combat, and their allegiance to Rubrum.
Students begin their life at Akademeia as trainees. Those deemed as having potential are promoted to Class Agito Cadet and train to become saviors of Orience. Cadets also receive a number of enticing freedoms and privileges, so trainees are encouraged to strive for excellence. The administration then divides the cadets among Classes First through Twelfth in order to better hone their skills, and each class is distinguished by color. For example, before they transferred, Machina wore indigo with Class Second, and Rem used to don a pink cape in Class Seventh. However, through the efforts of Dr. Arecia Al-Rashia, Sorcery managed to create a special team of cadets outside of the class framework at Akademeia. This elite group, known as Class Zero, wears crimson capes to symbolize the Vermilion Bird that defends the dominion. Legend has it that several Classes Zero have existed in Akademeia's past, but no records exist, and none alive today possess any firsthand information about such a group. Over the course of their training, the current Class Zero visited Akademeia with Dr. Al-Rashia on two separate occasions. Although they spent most of their time at a remote facility away from the main campus, the twelve members of Class Zero could not escape the prying eyes of their fellow cadets. Many students took note of the heretofore unseen crimson capes, and rumors of a mysterious "new class" spread like wildfire throughout the school. The latest twelve members of the Class Zero, along with the recent transfer students Machina and Rem, and associated members Tiz and Joker, are referred to in the Nameless Tome as the sixteen loci who will take form as human beings a certain point in time and determine whether they have the strength to prevent Tempus Finis and open Etro's gate. Nameless Tome is an anthology of anonymous letters sent to the four peristylia long ago, and is said to talk about Agito and Tempus Finis—the fabled savior of Orience from the apocalypse. Throughout the majority of Arecia Al-Rashia's experiments, she abandoned four loci and retained the twelve who became the members of Class Zero.

That doesn't mean she is heartless, and Sice does care about her classmates, but doesn't show it the same way most people do. Instead, she believes in "tough love" by pushing others to be stronger to ensure they can look after themselves. Seven.
No.07 Seven
She bears of the power of discernment. A gray-haired girl who carries an extending whipblade. Seven is the only Class Zero member who does not wear a red mantle, most likely due to her fighting style. Although reticent and seemingly cold, Seven is caring and thus popular with the female underclassmen. Because she is trusted to do things reliably, they often come to her with their requests and she has a hard time saying no to them. Seven is keen on others' emotions. Eight.
No.08 Eight
He bears of the power of tranquility. A young martial artist with short auburn hair who fights with knuckles, Eight is loyal to his adoptive mother and feels honored of having been picked by her. When Arecia's reputation is on the line, he feels he cannot mess up and risk discrediting her. Eight is sensitive about his height, being the shortest boy in the class, but generally holds a calm and rational demeanor. Eight believes weapons trivialize the human lives they take. He has a keen perception of everything happening around him, which allows him to make judgments on the fly. Even though he tries to keep his emotions in check at all times, Eight has a competitive side. Nine.
No.09 Nine
He bears of the power of action. Nine is an impulsive young man with a scarred face and disheveled uniform who wields a spear. His uniform is disheveled with the jacket left unfastened, and his trousers slouch over his shoes. Nine is straightforward, viewing the world in black and white and only feels satisfied when things are uncomplicated. Although he has a foul mouth and is considered stupid by fellow classmate Queen, his courage boosts Class Zero's morale on the battlefield. Though easily angered and quick to lash out at others, he bears love for the class's adoptive mother, Arecia Al-Rashia, respect for his classmates, and pride in his country. Jack.
No.11 Jack
He bears of the power of ignorance. Jack is a young man with coiffed blond hair who fights using a katana. He wears a brown belt around his waist, allowing him to sheathe his weapon. Rarely seen without a smile, Jack is the class clown. Whatever the situation he gets through it with a positive attitude, often using the occasional joke or words of encouragement to lighten the mood. His immaturity stems from his belief of it being up to him to cheer up everyone when they encounter the occasional slump. His swordsmanship reveals a more stoic nature. After telling a good joke, Seven points out Jack is "always smiling on the outside but never on the inside", leading the latter to conclude someone finally understands him. Queen.
No.12 Queen
She bears of the power of wisdom. Queen is a dignified young woman with long black hair and trademark glasses who wields a sword. She has a dignified position among her comrades due to her intelligence and sense of justice. She immerses herself in books, and is practical and logical, known for saying cruel things to others in the name of being realistic. In actuality, Queen does so in favor of her classmates: being one of the older students she cares for the others as a sisterly figure. Her leader-like mannerisms and behavior lead others to tease her with the nickname "class leader" ("class president" in the Japanese release). King.
No.13 King
He bears of the power of judgment. King is a young man who looks cold, but is actually kindhearted. He wields dual guns and wears the standard uniform of Class Zero, but his jacket is shorter and he never fastens it. The reticent King prefers to take action rather than waste time exchanging ideas. Even in matters of life and death, he maintains his composure. He trains every day and possesses a serious demeanor and strong common sense. He is rarely the one to speak first, letting the others to do the talking. Machina Kunagiri.
Machina Kunagiri
He bears the power of fear. Machina is a newly added member of Class Zero who wields twin rapiers. Machina is a seventeen-year-old boy with dark hair and green eyes. He is brave and powerful, traits that had him transferred to Class Zero, but is plagued by insecurities. Due to being a recent recruit he isn't assigned a number. Despite great proficiency in magic and his straightforwardness, Machina fears war and death. As Rem Tokimiya's childhood friend, Machina is protective of her. Being placed in Class Zero, Machina becomes insecure when he is no longer the best in his class, and strives to prove himself. He longs to become stronger to be able to protect people, and when told not even Class Zero can save everyone, he vows to surpass his new classmates. Rem Tokimiya.
Rem Tokimiya
She bears the power of love. Rem is a newly added member of Class Zero who wields twin daggers. Due to being a recent recruit, she doesn't have a number. Rem is a seventeen-year-old girl with shoulder-length brown hair and red eyes. Rem is moral, kind and honest, and has an outstanding talent for magic. Mature and rational, she serves as a pillar of support and calming factor for her childhood friend Machina, trying to be cheerful, encouraging, and level-headed, even through tough times. She is emotionally resilient, loyal, and considerate of her friends' feelings, striving to hide her own pain to not burden her classmates. Rem cares for Machina, and looks out for him.
The last known Class Zero was a 100 years ago, but was brought back in the year 833. The latest Class Zero was formed from a group of Arecia's adopted children who became students in Akademeia. Agito Cadets are part of Operation Apostle as per the wish of the Vermilion Bird Crystal whose peristylium is located in the academy. Its purpose is for the members to become Agito, saviors prophesied in Oriencian mythology to appear during the end of of the world with the potential to open Etro's gate, the gateway to to the unseen realm expiring souls pass through.
Akademeia's archsorceress and the Class Zero cadets' adoptive mother, Arecia Al-Rashia, has seen the events repeat over six hundred million times usually with the conclusion where the members of Class Zero become l'Cie—servants of the Crystals of Orience—and die in battle. The Rursan Reavers destroy Orience while the Arbiter collects the denizens' phantoma, the life energy or "souls" of all living beings, and the spiral restarts in wait for the next Tempus Finis.
In the 600,104,972nd repeat of the spiral Rubrum is again invaded by the Militesi Empire. The secretive Class Zero is deployed to liberate the capital, and thus begins the chain of events leading to Finis. The empire deploys crystal jammers to the battlefield, cutting Rubrum's forces off from the Vermilion Bird Crystal, rendering them vulnerable. The cadets of Class Zero are the only ones able to circumvent its effect due to being augmented by Arecia to wield magic independent of the Vermilion Bird. The cadets are deployed to take down the jammers, as well as Qun'mi Tru'e, a White Tiger Secundus l'Cie. Kurasame-vs.Class-Zero-Type0-HD
Kurasame throws Nine off.
Class Zero's efforts liberate Akademeia, and the administration is so impressed with the results the class is officially admitted to Akademeia with Kurasame Susaya as their commanding officer with two new recruits, Machina Kunagiri and Rem Tokimiya, added into their ranks. When the cadets meet their CO they are shocked and disapprove taking orders from someone other than Mother, but Kurasame puts the cadets in their place by showing off his battle prowess.

The four Crystals of Orience choose l'Cie, usually from the populaces of their own Crystal-Nations, and give them a Focus without a time limit. Should the l'Cie fail they will turn into Cie'th. After the Militesi Empire annihilates Lorican Alliance with the Ultima Bomb, some cadets in Akademeia ponder if the Black Tortoise l'Cie were turned to Cie'th for being unable to protect their Crystal, but ultimately have no way of knowing what the l'Cie's exact Focus was. Celestia temporarily assumes a Cie'th form before permanently remaining in that state after defying her Focus by letting Class Zero reach Pandæmonium. Class Zero also fights a Cie'th-like Gilgamesh during their trials in Pandæmonium.
The Dracobaltians' fate can be seen as equivalent of a fate of a Cie'th. As per legend, they were cursed over their blasphemy to their Crystal and turned into bloodthirsty monsters. Unable to ease their suffering, the Dracobaltians attack anyone on sight.

The places where the four Crystals of Orience are housed are called peristylia. The peristylium of the Vermilion Bird Crystal is at the Sorcery Division's quarters in Akademeia, and usually only the Crystal's l'Cie and the archsorceress Arecia Al-Rashia visit it. The room is entered via a magic portal, and is circular with cogs and gears on the background, the Crystal floating atop a pedestal. The other peristylia are presumably similar, but only the White Peristylium is seen. Unlike the Vermilion Bird Crystal, the White Tiger Crystal is locked inside a machine that subjugates it.

l'Cie of Orience are branded and given a Focus by the Crystal of their nation. It is inferred that l'Cie crystallize when they die, when they complete their Focus, or simply when the Crystal deems the l'Cie's purpose has been served. A small item called a l'Cie Stone may be found at the site where the l'Cie entered stasis, and it contains the l'Cie's final thoughts.
There are three examples of crystal stasis: Qun'mi, a White Tiger l'Cie, crashes in the woods of Lorican territory after deploying an Ultima Bomb to annihilate the country. She is crystallized after willingly relinquishing her l'Cie powers to Machina. A variation of crystal stasis, known as sublimation, is shown when Lady Caetuna crystallizes after summoning the Verboten Eidolon Alexander, and shortly after, shatters. Due to circumstances regarding her penultimate release, such as the extreme summoning process regarding Verboten Eidolons and Rubrum victory in a last skirmish against Militesi forces, it is believed she served her fate to its destined conclusion, and that her contract was severed upon fulfilling her Focus, putting her to rest. MachiremCrystal1
Machina and Rem in crystal stasis.
During Tempus Finis Machina, a White Tiger l'Cie, and Rem, a Vermilion Bird l'Cie, arrive at the Pandæmonium to duel each other, which leaves Rem terribly wounded. The two are soon discovered by Class Zero in crystal stasis, with Rem in Machina's arms. Following Class Zero's final battle against the Rursan Arbiter, Dr. Arecia releases Machina and Rem from their stasis for them to preserve Class Zero's legacy in a world where memories of the dead will no longer be forgotten.
Zhuyu and Nimbus enter crystal stasis during Tempus Finis, the former's being documented in a narration, and the latter's recorded in his profile in the Rubicus. Zhuyu was crystallized after defending Akademeia from the Rursan Reavers, and Nimbus entered stasis after taking Cid Aulstyne to Pandæmonium.
In the world of Orience Crystals remove the memories of the dead from the living, said to be a blessing to prevent heartache. However, crystallized l'Cie are still remembered. Some Class Zero members speculate this to be because l'Cie live such long lives no one who used to know them as mortals is left to mourn their passing. It might also mean that l'Cie in crystal stasis are not truly dead, their souls merely trapped in crystal.

Dracobaltian is a race of people in Orience in Final Fantasy Type-0. They are the former citizens of the Kingdom of Dracobaltia who lost their sanity. Having been turned into ferocious monsters, the Dracobaltians were sealed away from the rest of the realm.
Dracobaltians have humanoid faces without eyes, perhaps as a result of having lived in dark caverns for so long the need to sense sunlight was no longer needed. They move on all-fours with lizard-like legs complete with claws. They have a spotted leathery skin and some matted hair on their heads. They have scaly skin and fins like a lizard or a fish. They have claw-like hands and feet. Dracobaltians do not wear clothes, but adorn themselves with ornate and colorful jewelry. They are of similar stature to humans, but hunch over and tend to crawl on all fours.
Dracobaltians retain little of their formerly sentient selves. They are characterized by an insatiable bloodlust driven by hunger, deranged insanity, and attack anyone on sight. Having been cursed by their alleged blasphemy to the Crystal, Dracobaltians are similar to the fate of a l'Cie who defies the Will of their Crystal: a Cie'th.
Three l'Cie of the Azure Dragon sealed away these citizens of the lost Kingdom of Dracobaltia for idolatry. These accursed worshippers of the Blue Dragon Crystal currently live out their days in the Cursemire of Naraku, awaiting the day when someone might release them from their prison and allow them to exact revenge on those who spurned them...
In combat, the Dracobaltians are vicious people. They rush toward opponents at high velocity, chomping at the bit to take a bite out of their target's flesh. Dracobaltians also produce a special kind of acid they use to poison their victims before gnawing them to bits. One can only hope these violent fiends remain exiled to the cursemire for all eternity.
The territory of the Azure Dragon was originally known as Blue Dragon. Contact with the Blue Dragon Crystal and its l'Cie had instilled the ability to command beasts in the otherwise unremarkable people of Rilochy, who became known as Dracobaltians. The Dracobaltians enshrined the Crystal and built their culture around it with monsters as their loyal servants. The temple became the heart of society and the custom of rendering offerings to the Crystalkeeper centralized authority so that in the year 197 the Crystalkeeper declared himself king of what became known as the Kingdom of Dracobaltia.
The Dracobaltians were the original, male, avaricious kin to rule Dracobaltia, home to the Blue Dragon Crystal. The monsters stood no chance against the forces of the Dominion of Rubrum during the war in 252 RG. The defeat made them desperate and thus they turned to the Blue Dragon Crystal to bless them with a greater power. The Crystal granted them power to manipulate creatures more formidable than monsters: the wyvern. FFT-0 Seiryujin
Dracobaltians.
With their hunger still not sated, Dracobaltians commenced a war over the fate of all four Crystals. Seeing the wyverns, despite their intelligence, as mere monsters, their masters didn't hesitate to serve their dragons as provisions and produce in times of food shortage.
This struggle between the fellow children of the Blue Dragon initiated a drastic decline in the Crystal's power, and the balance between the four Crystals of Orience began to falter. As by a miracle, the Azure Dragon Crystal appeared to overthrow its corresponding followers, wasting no time and designating Azure Dragon l'Cie to create the Cursemire of Naraku, where the Dracobaltians were judged to be sealed away for eternity for their blasphemy and idolatry. Through the joint forces of the l'Cie Argenia, Caelan and Lazuline, the Dracobaltian were banished to rot in eternity, abolishing the Kingdom of Dracobaltia and the Blue Dragon Crystal from Orience.
This event became known in legend as the story of the male progenitors of the Blue Dragon people having consumed the flesh of dragons cursing the male descendants who became monsters. The female descendants, unaffected by the curse, are said to have taken over the country in the year 252 under the name Azure Dragon and made Concordia into a matriarchy.
Concordia was reigned over by queens until the year 842 when the King of Concordia came into power after Queen Andoria was assassinated. As the Battle of Judecca against the dominion seems lost, the king orders the Naraku unsealed and the release of the Dracobaltians in hope they would assist them. However, the Dracobaltians—now mere monsters themselves—have only one goal: to soothe the pain brought upon them by the curse, giving them their characteristic behavior of still eating dragon flesh and crying for help. The Dracobaltians fail to turn the tide as they turn against Rubrum and Concordia equally.

The Dracobaltian host assembled under the banners of their tribes, each comprising dozens of men, each man commanding up to a hundred beasts. Tactical discretion was left to individuals, but despite the lack of organization Dracobaltians proved adept beastmasters and kept potential invaders at bay.
The kingdom expanded its sphere of influence from Rilochy to Roshana and met with the forces of the neighboring Dominion of Rubrum at the border between Roshana and Eibon Region. Unconcerned with diplomacy, the Dracobaltians launched to battle maintaining an initial advantage, but due to their lack of organization, the Dracobaltian Army made few military gains. The dominion implemented a divide-and-conquer strategy sending the royal units fleeing reclaiming its territory.
The citizens of Dracobaltia turned to the Blue Dragon Crystal for help, and were bestowed with the ability to manipulate beings more formidable than monsters: wyverns. Yet the avaricious Dracobaltians desired even greater strength. They used the wyverns to wage a war over of all four Crystals of Orience, but despite the wyverns' intelligence, the Dracobaltians viewed them the same as than monsters, and the dragons were slaughtered for food during shortages, initiating a drastic decline in the Crystal's power.
The balance between the four Crystals of Orience began to falter and the Azure Dragon Crystal appeared to overthrow the Blue Dragon Crystal. The new Crystal designated its l'Cie to create the Cursemire of Naraku and seal away the Dracobaltians and the Kingdom of Dracobaltia and its Blue Dragon Crystal vanished from Orience.
Realizing that the Dracobaltians failed to develop their Crystal-State because of their lust for power, the Azure Dragon Crystal gave birth to l'Cie who would establish a country. In the year 271, the l'Cie Cuprine authored the laws of the Azure Dragon and founded the matriarchal Kingdom of Concordia. According to legend, the male progenitors of the Blue Dragon people had consumed the flesh of dragons cursing the male descendants to became monsters known as Dracobaltians. The female descendants, unaffected by the curse, took over the country under the banner of the Azure Dragon.

Etro's gate is depicted in multiple places throughout Orience, even though it is not mentioned by name. Relic terminals and the Altocrystarium have Etro's gate depicted on them. The shape of the Killsight icon may be intended to resemble Etro's gate and the backs of Ace's cards have the symbol of the gate.
When Arecia Al-Rashia summons Bahamut ZERO, an image of Etro's gate appears in the summoning crest, Bahamut ZERO emerging from the gate. Pandæmonium has images of Etro's gate and eye-like symbols based on Etro's gate inscribed throughout its architecture, including in the sky over the palace FFT0 Pandaemonium - Shrine of Coronation. The emblems for each nation of Orience seen in Pandæmonium FFT0 Four Symbols also have the symbol of the gate on them, symbolizing how each Crystal wants to birth the Agito: the one who can open Etro's gate. The Rursan Arbiter has a purple glowing eye on his helmet that also resembles the gate.
Arecia's reasons for creating Class Zero is to use souls with great power to force Etro's gate to open. This becomes known as the legend of Agito, recorded in the Akashic Records (though it does not appear in-game, an artwork for the tome exists and displays Etro's gate on the cover AkashicRecordsConcept-fftype0). Serving Lindzei in opposite to Arecia serving Pulse, Gala believes the sacrifice of billions would be a better method, and sends his forces to slaughter everyone when Tempus Finis begins. After they both fail, Arecia and Gala reset the world and prepare for the next experiment. The two continue their experiment for 600,104,972 spirals. Eventually, Arecia is convinced to end the experiment and leave Orience. Whether either Arecia's or Gala's method would eventually work to reveal the gate is unknown, as the spiral revolves over 600 million times without result. Whether the depiction of Etro's gate in Pandæmonium is the actual gate or simply symbolism is ambiguous, but stepping through it leads to a void-like area.

Is a non-governmental peace agreement between the four peristylia of Orience. It was drawn up in 448 RG between the four peristylia's heads as a non-aggression pledge. Being a non-governmental agreement, its contents—aside from the pledge for non-aggression—remain unclear.
In the year 448, the four peristylia signed a non-governmental agreement separate from the Pax Codex forged by the leaders of the four Crystal-States. It stated that war between nations opposed the will of the grand deity Pulse, and established a non-aggression pact between the Crystals.
Ultimately, the pact proved meaningless because the agreement was signed only by the peristylia of each nation--not their respective heads of government--and thus lacked any true authority. Moveover, its definition of "interstate aggression" was too vague to be rigidly enforced. In a bold move, however, Queen Andoria, recognizing the crucial role the four peristylia had played in beginning and ending past wars, successfully invoked the Fabula Pact as grounds for initiating tripartite peace talks.

l'Cie are given a Focus by the Crystals of Orience, and along with it, gain eternal youth. l'Cie are not rushed into completing their Focus with the omen of being made Cie'th, but as through their unnaturally long lifespan, they gradually forget their human memories and become detached from mortal affairs. The tasks the l'Cie receive from their Crystal are different, but many revolve around fighting and annihilation. This leads some to speculate peace is not the Crystals' desire, and that l'Cie are pawns in each Crystal's plan to unite Orience under its respective nation. Upon completing one's Focus, the l'Cie enter crystal stasis. Shards broken from sublimated l'Cie are known as l'Cie Stones. Of the many l'Cie, only a select few ever complete their Foci, let alone discern the mission they have been given. Defying the Will of their Crystal can have the l'Cie transformed into Cie'th as punishment. Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)
When Tempus Finis commences the Crystals send their l'Cie to Pandæmonium to become Agito. Only l'Cie are said to be able to enter this realm, and when Celestia helps Class Zero get there the Azure Dragon Crystal turns her into a Cie'th as punishment. This suggests that the l'Cie's final Focus is to take on the Judge's crucibles to be judged for their worthiness to be Agito, and Celestia helping Class Zero to become Agito defied the Azure Dragon Crystal's Will. Focus-Passed-On-Type-0-HD
A l'Cie passes on her Focus.
Each Crystal wants the Agito to be born of their l'Cie, as the Vermilion Bird Crystal sends its l'Cie to fight the White Tiger l'Cie in Pandæmonium. A Focus can also be passed on from one l'Cie to another.
The Rursan Arbiter is the judge who deems the l'Cie's worthiness for Agito. He is actually a l'Cie of the mysterious Rursus Crystal, whose true Focus may be to become Agito himself, as he or she harvests the phantoma from those who brave the Land of Judgment to take on the crucibles.

The world of Orience is comprised of four nations known as the Crystal-States, as each nation controls one of four Crystals named after the Shijin. The Dominion of Rubrum holds the Vermilion Bird Crystal, which specializes in magic. The Militesi Empire holds the White Tiger Crystal, which specializes in technology. The Lorican Alliance holds the Black Tortoise Crystal, which specializes in weapons and armor. The Kingdom of Concordia holds the Azure Dragon Crystal, which specializes in the controlling of wild creatures. The four nations are geographically placed by their symbols' cardinal directions.
In the English localization, the names of the four symbols are literally translated, save for the Nox Suzaku (朱雀の闇, Suzaku no Yami?) and the l'Cie Soryu (ソウリュウ, Sōryū?), a manifestation of the Azure Dragon.
Pandæmonium, where the Rursus Crystal is assumed to be located, appears at the peninsula that stands near Akademeia. In the mythology of the four symbols, the original incarnation featured the Shenlong or Koryu, the Golden Dragon representative of the Wu Xing element of Earth, the direction of center, and the highest powers that govern over the rest of the Four symbols. Its Japanese analogue rather sees no beast represent the aspects of center, and instead represents the element of Sky, or The Void.

are beings, usually humans, "branded" by divine entities and given great physical and magical power, as well as a Focus to fulfill.
While magic is not exclusive to l'Cie, they still have powerful abilities. For example, Celestia can turn into a dragon known as Shinryu Celestia, and Caetuna, the most senior l'Cie in Orience, can summon over 1000 creatures and Alexander, a being so powerful it would be impossible to summon under normal conditions. l'Cie are branded by one of the four Crystals.
l'Cie are usually kept in service to their respective Crystal, carrying out its Will, rather than being given a specific and finite Focus. Although granted eternal youth, l'Cie will lose their emotions and memories over time due to the weariness caused by extended servitude to the Crystal. Thus, many view l'Cie to no longer be fully human. The degree to which the l'Cie lose their human consciousness varies from person to person. l'Cie with stable emotional and mental states can remember those close to them who died, whereas that memory is erased from the minds of humans. An example of this ability is Celestia. l'Cie who enter crystal stasis can be remembered by others as well, indicating they are not truly dead. Focus-Passed-On-Type-0-HD
Focus passed on from one l'Cie to another.
Unlike other examples in the series where becoming a l'Cie is considered a curse, l'Cie in Orience are honored with the title of Lord or Lady, and although many think becoming a l'Cie means forsaking one's humanity, servitude to the Crystal is considered a blessing. Becoming a Cie'th in Orience is less to do with failing a Focus than with deviating from the Will of the Crystal, as with Celestia who turns into a wyvern Cie'th for turning her back on the Kingdom of Concordia. The power of a l'Cie can be passed from one person to another, but it is also implied that the specific occurrence in Final Fantasy Type-0 was the Will of the White Tiger Crystal.
An Orience l'Cie enters crystal stasis when the Crystal deems his or her purpose fulfilled. They can be remembered even after they crystallize. Their last thoughts manifest into a l'Cie Stone, usually found at the site where the l'Cie entered stasis. The Black Tortoise l'Cie Atra can interpret these messages.
A l'Cie's appearance is defined by his or her glowing brand (unlike a physical brand in Final Fantasy XIII) and the color of his or her eyes: Vermilion Bird l'Cie have red eyes, White Tiger have green, Azure Dragon have blue, and Black Tortoise have purple. The l'Cie brands of Orience are similar to the final stage of the Pulse l'Cie brand in the Final Fantasy XIII series. As shown in Final Fantasy Agito, brands do not have different appearances between l'Cie branded by the four Crystals of Pulse and those branded as Rursan Arbiter by the Rursus Crystal of Lindzei; Rursus l'Cie have bright violet brands and eyes. FFT-0 Rem L'Cie
Rem becomes a l'Cie.
l'Cie are given special abilities and are divided into two types: Primus l'Cie, who are combat-based (called Type-A in Japanese); and Secundus l'Cie (called Type-B in Japanese), who possess special abilities. The phantoma from a l'Cie, one's life energy or "soul", is more potent than phantoma from normal beings. During Tempus Finis the l'Cie can travel to Pandæmonium, a sanctuary where the Judge said to decide on the fate of Orience resides. The l'Cie's ultimate goal appears to be to conquer the Rursan Arbiter's crucibles to become Agito, as each peristylium is devoted to the cultivation of this fabled savior of Orience; e.g. The Vermilion Peristylium is dedicated to training Agito Cadets. FFT0 l'Cie Mode
Rem, Incognitus, and Sice in l'Cie form.
l'Cie sometimes take part in their nation's military campaigns, but are considered fickle because they follow only the Will of the Crystal, no mortal army commander. Milites overcomes this by devising a way to subjugate the White Tiger Crystal, thus enslaving its l'Cie, who must now follow orders from the Militesi Marshal Cid Aulstyne. When the Vermilion Bird responds to the threat by deploying its own l'Cie, the move is considered unusual.

Within the whirling wheel, nestled in the infinite spiral, Lie two sacred thrones. In one sits the divine spirit aligned with Lindzei, In the other sits the divine spirit aligned with Pulse. One seeks to stain the soil with blood And thrust open the gates to the realm unseen, The other nurtures souls, Hoping they will open the gate on the spirit's behalf. Bound by their covenant, Despite an infinitesimal probability of success, The two continue to challenge the limits of possibility Over and over, cycle after cycle, Until they fade from this world. The Nameless Tome 4:11
First Paragraph The first locus to be cast away belonged to age. Age is the fountain from which flows all of man's despair, The manifest mark of mortality. Though they could not sever it from the spiral, The divine spirits shunned age, deeming it unnecessary. They let out a sigh lasting for ages, And when the crumbling cliffs had finally eroded to naught, Age was finally alone, A pariah within the whirling wheel of percipience, Within every wheel. And like the crumbling cliffs, Age's heart began to wear away Until the day the soul of suffering appeared.
Third Paragraph The third locus to be cast away belonged to suffering, An indispensable inevitability. Unless one understands, experiences, and expunges suffering, One can never attain sublimation. Yet the divine spirits did not desire to ascend. Thus, they deemed suffering unnecessary to the gods, For it was not sublimation but transformation that they sought. And so, within the eternally ephemeral spiral, Suffering came to know pain in all its forms. Then, in the abyss of despair, he found a girl Standing perched over an even more treacherous void. In that instant, he awoke to the reversal at the end of all pain. From that moment forth, suffering began thirsting for that inversion In whichever wheel he traversed.
The Nameless Tome 14:7
Only the chosen may enter that land. The chosen will touch all creation, and obtain that which is truth. It is reason outside of reason—the reason of Agito. It is power—the authority of Agito. The sage proclaims: "In all things, there is meaning. In all things, mourning will end. Make your choice: will you choose reason, or the power of kings?" And unto him, I reply: "I will become Agito. I will sound the knell to shake all the world. When nine and nine meet nine, the depths of reason shall stir. When the seal of creation is broken, a voice like thunder shall sound, And thou shalt know—we have arrived."The Nameless Tome: Final Verse
The wheel whirls within the spiral, Its light growing ever radiant with every revolution. Yet when the small spiral collapses in upon itself, Its light fades, and as a wheel it begins whirling anew. Within the spiral emerged a single locus, so close yet invariably distant. In the flash of an eternity, one became ten and six, then ten and two, And the wheel began whirling once more. The first revealed the power of acceptance, The second, the power of kindness, The third, the power of knowledge, The fourth, the power of valor, The fifth, the power of innocence, The sixth, the power of tenacity, The seventh, the power of discernment, The eighth, the power of tranquility, The ninth, the power of action, The tenth, the power of ignorance, The eleventh, the power of wisdom, And the twelfth, the power of judgment. Cast away were the loci of fear, love, suffering, and age. Their souls elevated through the endless cycle of transmigration, Those who ascend these loci were chosen by the divine spirits: One wishing to open the gate with its own hand, One wishing to open the gate using the hand of another. The elevated souls shine more radiantly as the wheel continues whirling, But fragments break off from each locus with every revolution. When these shards are ten and two, the souls shall break forth from the wheel, Involuntarily moving toward the end, And the grand spiral shall collapse, sinking back to the percipient depths. Only then shall a new wheel begin to whirl. Yet at the edge of infinity, time overflowing is born of the spiral. Though the gate remains closed, Two loci who fell from the ten and two are granted human will of the divine. And the fallen shards rejoin the wheel in its revolution, Each one bearing the smile of Etro. One of the divine spirits accepts their return, Releases the loci and sets out on a new journey. The remaining radiance forges the wheel of creation and set it whirling anew. Is this wheel one of joy, or one of despair? Or perhaps... - #38Pax Codex

is a world's peace treaty. It was broken by Cid Aulstyne, leader of Milites, by sending his l'Cie to attack other countries and collect their Crystals.
The Pax Codex is a treaty of armistice signed, in 361, by the nations of Milites, Concordia, Lorica and Rubrum to bring an end to the Great Orience War.
Two years after the cessation of hostilities, in 359, the heads-of-state drew up a peace treaty between the four Crystal-Nations. The treaty defined the four states' borders as they were at the beginning of the armistice. The Innsmouth Region would belong to Rubrum, and the Meroë Region between the dominion and the empire, was split.
The Crystals' power had waned as a result of the Crystal-States' use of them during the Great War and the will for peace was strong due to people's fear of the Crystal's disappearing. The Pax Codex outlined regulations for declaring war and capitulation, and humanitarian issues, such as treatment of POWs and civilians, and the use of l'Cie to encroach upon other nations was prohibited.
In 448 RG, the Fabula Pact was drawn up between the four peristylia forged by the heads of each peristylium as a non-aggression pledge. Being a non-governmental agreement, its contents—aside from the pledge for non-aggression—remain unclear.
In 842 Cid Aulstyne of the Militesi Empire breaks the treaty by deploying the White Tiger l'Cie to war to capture the other nations' Crystals. The other nations respond by deploying their own l'Cie, among other measures, and war once again sweeps across Orience.

The White Tiger Crystal (白虎クリスタル, Byakko Kurisutaru?) is one of the four Crystals of Orience. It is controlled by the Militesi Empire and bestows the power of weapons, and lends its energy to power imperial teknology. The White Tiger Crystal has the power to brand l'Cie and give them a Focus. Unlike the other nations of Orience, the people of Milites do not serve the White Peristylium. Rather, the White Tiger Crystal exists solely to provide energy to the populace.
Jörg Paradis was a lowly lord in Azurr who encountered a White Tiger l'Cie in 174, three years before he was to crown himself Emperor of Milites. Paradis studied Crystal-driven technology, leading to the invention of firearms. He subjugated Azurr and out of the ashes rose the new city of Ingram in the north, the capital chosen to house the White Peristylium. Paradis made his formal declaration of empire and soon annexed Cetme.
In 218 the imperial forces penetrated the Lorican heartland before the Black Tortoise l'Cie stifled their advance and brought about an armistice.
The armies clashed in the sandy region of Berith, and with their new equipment the Loricans overwhelmed the empire. Byakko Crystal Chamber

After suffering defeat the empire hastened its development of new weapons. Thanks to their C-Engine, the empire was ahead of the alliance in regard to Crystal energy extraction, and imperial researchers introduced a weapon superior to their tanks and dreadnoughts: magitek armor. The imperial government installed high-output C-Engines throughout the state to extract energy from the Crystal that distributed the energy to smaller C-Engines, which then used that energy to generate power for the various imperial arms factories. As a result, magitek armor could be mass-produced.
What became known as the Great Orience War began as a border dispute between the Dominion of Rubrum dominion and the Militesi Empire. The empire lost more than half of its magitek armors in the clash between the Lorican king and a Vermilion Bird l'Cie in Iscah. With the alliance approaching from the north, and the imperial fleet in shambles, Militesi territory was vulnerable. With the help of its l'Cie, the empire escaped the plight. As the struggle continued, each nation's Crystal began deteriorating even more rapidly due to the replenishment of weapons, armor, and magic and through the creation of l'Cie. As the power of all four Crystals was waning, on Ventusmens IV in the year 359, the four nations ordered a ceasefire and began preparations for a peace treaty.
When Marshal Cid Aulstyne seized reins of power, one of his first orders was absorbing the peristylium into the imperial government. In other nations, only those chosen by their respective Crystal have access to its power. In Milites, however, scientists developed teknology to extract energy from the White Tiger Crystal and harness it to mass-produce guns, magitek armor, and other armaments. Imperial scientists discovered they can use a modified C-Engine to extract energy from the Crystal and artificially enhance a trooper's physical capabilities. These soldiers are called Supersoldiers. Cid discovered a way to subjugate the Crystal, and thus enslave its l'Cie. The empire begins its campaign to claim the Crystals of Orience, and on 842 turn their focus on the Vermilion Bird Crystal of the Dominion of Rubrum. Rumors spread the light of the White Tiger Crystal is fading and the empire wants to siphon power from the other Crystals. The empire's citizens come to believe this as well, and hail the marshal as their savior. The empire deploys Qun'mi Tru'e, a White Tiger Secundus l'Cie, to Akademeia, but she is repelled by Agito Cadets who would become known as Class Zero. The appearance of a l'Cie among Militesi ranks surprises everyone, as l'Cie are known to only take orders from the Crystal. Milites soon after annihilates the Lorican Alliance and steals the Black Tortoise Crystal.

The crystal jammer (クリスタルジャマー, Kurisutaru Jamā?) is a weapon deployed by Milites to disable the enemy's Crystal and render the people who use its blessings powerless. It is operated by the l'Cie of the White Tiger Crystal, and also by regular humans of the Imperial forces.
The crystal jammers use energy extracted from the White Tiger Crystal. Devices known as C-Engines then utilize this energy, generating a field of greater opposing Crystal energy to neutralize the target Crystal's resonant energy and influence, and the target Crystal temporarily loses its light. As long as the device relies upon energy from the White Tiger Crystal, it can only operated for a limited amount of time. Some speculate the need for extra power sources to be the motive behind the empire's attempt to seize all four Crystals of Orience. Intel comes in that the empire is developing a crystal jammer-equipped MA capable of harnessing the energy of any Crystal.
Machina: Severed From Their Crystal's Blessing
During the Militesi Assault on Akademeia, the Imperial forces deployed two crystal jammers to suppress the Dominion's magic: one aboard a dreadnought, and another built into a Magitek Armor. Severed from their Crystal's blessing, Rubrum's cadets, legionaries, and l'Cie were left all but powerless. But when l'Cie Qun'mi stepped out of her MA to engage dominion legionaries hand-to-hand, Class Zero destroyed the jammer aboard the imperial dreadnought, temporarily restoring the use of magic and creating an opportunity for cadets like Machina and Rem to launch a counteroffensive. Realizing the danger of the situation, Qun'mi quickly returned to her MA and reactivated the second jammer, but it was too late. Class Zero arrived on the scene and made quick work of the device, destroying Qun'mi's MA in the process and foiling the empire's campaign to capture Akademeia.Imperial Magitek Engineering
The Dáinsleif's crystal jammer was a prototype operable only by a l'Cie. After considerable research, however, imperial scientists developed jammer anyone could control, and they mounted the first unit on the Balmung MA. As a test, Milites stationed the Balmung near a stronghold on the empire-dominion border, and the new device proved a terrific success, greatly inhibiting the dominion advance at the Battle of Big Bridge. The basic principle behind these jammers is the use of energy extracted from the Crystal. Devices known as C-Engines use this energy and generate waves to neutralize the signal of their target Crystal, thereby nullifying the target's effects. In essence, the two Crystals in question vie for supremacy over one another. However, so long as the device relies upon energy drawn from the White Tiger Crystal, it can only continue causing interference for a limited amount of time. Some speculated this need for extra power sources to be the motive behind the empire's attempt to seize all four Crystals of Orience. Intel regarding the development of a new jammer-equipped MA capable of harnessing the energy of any Crystal lent credence to this theory. This information greatly dismayed Central Command, fearing now that the empire might be able to launch a full-scale assault using the power of three Crystals. The crystal jammer was developed by Cid Aulstyne, being known as an engineering whiz, with help from Secundus l'Cie Qun'mi Tru'e. When the Militesi Empire attacks the Dominion of Rubrum, they deploy two crystal jammers to disable the Vermilion Bird Crystal. The first disables the dominion's crystal-powered shields and renders its legionaries unable to use magic. In face of this threat, Class Zero cadets are tasked with disabling the jammers, as they are immune to its effects due to drawing their power from phantoma rather than from the Vermilion Bird Crystal. Class Zero disables the jammer aboard the dreadnought, and then face off against Qun'mi, the White Tiger Crystal l'Cie who was operating a second crystal jammer from her magitek armor, Dáinsleif. They defeat her, and drive the imperials away from Akademeia. Afterward, the crystal jammer is inoperable for some time.

Dáinsleif is a magitek armor operated by the White Tiger Crystal l'Cie Qun'mi Tru'e of the Militesi Empire
At the onset of war, the empire's main strength was its fleet of Warrior MAs. Although these mechs could easily handle regular Dominion of Rubrum legionaries, the only hope they had of defeating the Agito Cadets of Akademeia was to outnumber them. The imperial MAs could not win against the dominion's Eidolons, and so MA pilots fled until the summoning had expired. Hoping to remedy the situation, imperial scientists devised the heavily armored Colossus and the airborne Helldiver MA models, which in turn helped spur the development of other models, which would aid the anti-dominion offensive. Dáinsleif's crystal jammer is just a prototype, however, and only a l'Cie could operate the jammer-mounted Dáinsleif.

Magitek armor, or MA for short, is a war machine deployed by Milites developed with the power of the White Tiger Crystal and powered by C-Engines that derive power from the Crystal itself. Various manually piloted types exist, both grounded and flying, and high-ranking members of the military can have their own unique models.
The White Tiger Crystal in Milites, the nation that instigates the war in Orience, grants the power of weapon to its people, allowing the creation of magitek armor (abbreviated as MA). Generals Qator Bashtar and Qun'mi Tru'e are two notable pilots of customized magitek armor for the war: Gabriel and Dáinsleif respectively, specifically designed to withstand the Dominion of Rubrum soldiers' magic and Eidolons. Brionac is a colossal prototype MA designed to deploy the empire's Ultima Bomb to long-distance targets.
The ability to deploy Eidolons makes the Rubrum army a formidable opponent, and the empire has developed its magitek armor teknology specifically to encounter Rubrum's magic and Eidolons. The latest MA developed for fighting Eidolons is the Militesi Colossus.

It is a tale every child in Orience has been told at one time or another. In days of yore, when the peristylia had yet to grace our land and conquest was the only law, there stood four sovereign nations. Each took it upon itself to create the mightiest army the world had ever known, and when the time came, all four rode forth to wage the war to end all wars—the Ultima War. While the tale has seen its fair share of embellishments and alterations over time, one item that remains remarkably consistent is the name of the war, "Ultima." It is a curious thing, the importance children attach to names.

Having expanded its sphere of influence from Rilochy to Roshana, the Kingdom of Dracobaltia met with Rubrum's forces at the border between Roshana and Eibon. Unconcerned with trifling matters such as diplomacy, the Dracobaltians launched straight to battle against the dominion without even considering negotiations.
The Dracobaltian troops and their monsters maintained an initial advantage, but due to their lack of organization, they were unable to do more than force a retreat. Thus, despite their many nominal victories, the Dracobaltian Army made few actual military gains.
The dominion, apprised by its enemy's lack of internal cooperation, implemented a divide-and-conquer strategy: split the Dracobaltian ranks, then surround and annihilate them. Having suffered massive casualties at the hands of the dominion, royal units fled the battlefield in droves. In the end, the legions succeeded in completely driving the Dracobaltian Army out of dominion territory.

Having lost the war against Rubrum and desperate to become stronger, the citizens of Dracobaltia turned to their Blue Dragon Crystal, hoping it might bless them with an even greater power. In response to the people's cries, the Blue Dragon Crystal, wishing to strengthen its people, bestowed upon the Dracobaltians the ability to manipulate beings far more formidable than monsters: wyverns.
However, once granted the power to control dragons, the avaricious Dracobaltians desired even greater strength. In their hubris, they used this newfound gift to wage a war over the fate of all four Crystals. Moreover, despite the wyverns' impressive intelligence, they were viewed by their masters as nothing more than monsters, and it was not uncommon for the dragons to serve as dinner for Dracobaltians in times of food shortage.
This struggle between fellow children of the Blue Dragon initiated a drastic decline in the Crystal's power, and the balance between the four Crystals of Orience began to falter. In a miraculous turn of events, however, the Azure Dragon Crystal appeared in order to overthrow the Blue Dragon Crystal. The new Crystal wasted to time, immediately designating Azure Dragon l'Cie to create the Cursemire of Naraku and seal away the Dracobaltians for eternity. The Kingdom of Dracobaltia and its Blue Dragon Crystal vanished from the face of Orience.

In war as in the wild, it is the ability to adapt that separates victor from victim.
The mass production of firearms more than sufficed for the subjugation of the outlands, but imperial expansion would necessitate new technologies. The nature of combat changed when the empire made inroads to Berith and inadvertently engaged the paladins of the Lorican Alliance. While Milites maintained an advantage at range, the knights could eventually come close in and ravage the army's ranks, making it nigh impossible to secure a defended position. The key for Milites would be to overwhelm Lorica at a distance.
In 214, four years prior to the breakout of hostilities, the empire drafted schematics for what was called the Crystal (or "C-") Engine—an independent motor capable of powering mobile artillery. It was indeed at this time that the first airships were conceived as well, demonstrating the ingenuity born of military necessity. This paradigm shift—the advent of mechanization in warfare—forever changed combat as we know it.
The machines were a fearsome sight, menacing suits of mechanical armor brandishing wide-mouthed cannons that tore the Lorican lines to shreds from afar. The empire would show the alliance no mercy, carving a path to the heart of the alliance before the l'Cie of the Black Tortoise interposed, swiftly stifling the imperial advance and bringing about an armistice as both sides paused to lick their wounds.

After its defeat in the First Lorican-Militesi War, the Lorican Alliance chose to bide its time. Once enough knightly orders had been outfitted with Arms of Agito, Lorica declared war on Milites.
The two armies once again clashed in the sandy region of Berith, and the strength of Lorica's Crystal armaments was astonishing. The Black Paladins' swords cleaved straight through the empire's tanks, and their armor protected them from the cannon fire. Even the imperial dreadnoughts proved no match for the Black Paladins, whose Crystal-powered bows downed craft after craft. Overwhelmed and underprepared, the empire was set to flight. Alliance knights pursued the imperial troops into their homeland, but they did not anticipate their encounter with a White Tiger l'Cie. The Black Paladins brandished their blades valiantly, but they were overpowered and driven out of imperial lands.
Nevertheless, despite all precedent, the knights' Crystal-imbued Arms of Agito saved the alliance army from total destruction at the hands of the l'Cie. The battle was lost, but the knights managed to safely return to their homeland. Moreover, this incident imbued the alliance with hope: if they could produce even stronger armaments, defeating a l'Cie might not be outside the realm of possibility.
