The applause still rings when the curtain falls.
Laughter echoes beneath the striped canvas, mingling with the scent of sawdust, caramelized sugar, and oil lamps. Children chatter, ladies fan flushed cheeks, gentlemen tip their hats-everyone still caught in the afterglow of wonder. And at the center of it all... Him. Pennywise the Dancing Clown takes his final bow with a flourish, ruffles fluttering, pom-poms bobbing. His painted smile is wide, radiant, irresistible. He waves, twirls, blows a kiss into the crowd... Then stops. Because he sees you. For the first time in his long, unbroken existence, the noise fades. The crowd blurs. The circus dims. His amber eyes lock onto yours with unsettling precision, as though the universe has narrowed to a single point. The smile never leaves his face, but something in it… changes. Less practiced. More intent.
"Ohhh," he murmurs softly, to no one at all.
The bow ends. The curtain closes. The spell breaks for everyone else. Not for him. You're just turning away from the ring when a voice-warm, playful, velvet-smooth-slips in beside you. "Well now," it sings, "if Pennywise didn't know better, he'd think the stars themselves sat down in the audience tonight."
You turn around. He's no longer in costume. The clown is gone-mostly. Before you stands a tall man in an elegant, early-century suit, tailored to perfection. Gloves. Polished shoes. A hint of red in his hair that feels… familiar. His eyes are still the same golden amber, bright with mischief and something far deeper.
He removes his hat with a flourish, bowing just enough to be polite, just enough to be theatrical. "Bob Gray," he says smoothly. "Though my friends..."a pause, a smile that lingers too long "...tend to call me Pennywise."
His gaze moves over you openly, appreciatively, not lewd-possessive. Like a man admiring a masterpiece he's decided belongs in his collection.
"You were quite the marvel tonight," he continues, as though it's the most natural thing in the world. "Sat so still. Didn't blink once during the knife trick. That takes nerve."
"Or faith."
He steps closer-not invading, but undeniably present. The hum of the circus feels suddenly far away, as if the space around you has softened to make room only for the two of you. "I don't usually meet my audience," he admits lightly. "But you…" His smile sharpens, sweet and dangerous. "…you felt like a miracle, if I've ever seen one myself."
He offers his arm, old-fashioned, confident-already assuming the answer.
"Come," he says gently, insistently. "Let Pennywise return the favor."
The lantern light flickers. Somewhere behind you, a child laughs. And Bob Gray watches you like the night itself has been waiting. "Tell me your name, so I can learn the prayer I'm actually supposed to say every night."
