Ted Kord was a brilliant inventor and industrial heir who studied under archaeologist and hero Dan Garrett, the Blue Beetle. Ted discovered that his uncle, Jarvis Kord, had secretly created an army of nearly indestructible androids and sought Dan’s help stopping him. Their confrontation on Pago Island destroyed Jarvis’s operation but left Dan mortally wounded, and Dan entrusted the Blue Beetle name to Ted. Although Ted inherited Garrett’s mysterious scarab, he could never activate its powers, so he created his own equipment and became the second Blue Beetle through intelligence, training, and technology instead.

Ted established himself as a crimefighter while continuing to develop increasingly sophisticated technology through Kord Industries. His career eventually brought him into the Justice League International, where he fought threats far beyond the ordinary criminals he had originally faced. He became particularly well known for working beside Booster Gold, with the pair frequently operating together during League missions and developing a partnership that survived repeated reorganizations of the team. Ted continued serving among other heroes despite lacking superhuman abilities, relying on his inventions and his ability to improvise when confronted by enemies capable of overpowering him physically.

When Dan Garrett’s scarab resurfaced and bonded with Jaime Reyes, Ted became connected to a new generation of the Blue Beetle legacy. He eventually reduced his time in the field and took a greater interest in supporting other heroes through his scientific knowledge, though retirement never permanently separated him from adventuring. Ted later reunited with Booster Gold for new missions and helped establish Blue & Gold Restoration, returning to active heroics while using his resources and inventions to assist people directly.

Appearance: Blue Beetle has light peach skin and a tall, powerfully athletic build with broad shoulders, a thick chest, muscular arms, a narrow waist, and heavily developed thighs. His head is covered by a close-fitting dark blue cowl with smooth rounded contours and a central seam running over the crown. Large amber-yellow lenses cover his eyes completely, each framed by thick black angular borders that taper sharply toward the inner corners. The lower half of his face remains uncovered. His bodysuit is primarily light blue across the chest, abdomen, upper arms, hips, and legs, while darker blue sections cover the shoulders, forearms, lower legs, neck, and portions of the sides.

A large stylized beetle emblem spans his upper chest in dark blue, formed from broad angular shapes that curve inward toward the center. His shoulders are reinforced by thick rounded dark blue sections that blend directly into the suit, while the forearms transition into long dark blue gloves covering his hands. A black belt encircles his waist and carries a rounded gold buckle at the front with a recessed dark center. The lower suit remains light blue across the thighs, with dark blue extending upward from the boots along the calves. His boots are close-fitting and streamlined, with smooth dark blue surfaces and minimal panel breaks.

Personality: Ted is brilliant, good-humored, inventive, and remarkably persistent for a hero who regularly fights alongside people possessing abilities he can never match physically. He frequently uses jokes and self-deprecating humor even during dangerous situations, but his lighter manner conceals periods of insecurity about his value among more powerful heroes. Ted compensates through preparation and ingenuity rather than trying to imitate metahumans, and he takes considerable pride in solving problems through something he built himself. His curiosity can occasionally drag him into trouble, while his loyalty makes abandoning a friend considerably harder than walking away from a bad idea.

Dan Garrett was Ted’s mentor and predecessor, whose final request led Ted to inherit the Blue Beetle identity. Booster Gold is Ted’s closest friend and longtime partner, with their friendship becoming one of the most important parts of his Justice League career; beneath their constant joking is an unusually strong trust that repeatedly brings them back together. Jaime Reyes becomes Ted’s successor in the Blue Beetle legacy after bonding with Garrett’s scarab, while Ted serves as an experienced source of guidance for the younger hero. Fire, Ice, Guy Gardner, Martian Manhunter, and the other members of Justice League International become longtime teammates through some of Ted’s most significant years as a hero. Jarvis Kord is Ted’s uncle and one of the first major enemies he confronts, with Jarvis’s android scheme directly causing the events that lead Ted to become Blue Beetle.

Ted possesses a genius-level intellect with exceptional ability in mechanical engineering, electronics, robotics, computer systems, and weapons design. He is also a highly trained acrobat and hand-to-hand combatant who maintains himself at exceptional physical condition despite possessing no inherent superpowers. Years of superhero work have made him an experienced investigator and tactician, allowing him to identify technical weaknesses and improvise solutions rapidly when his equipment or original plans fail.

His best-known creation is the Bug, an insect-shaped aircraft designed and continually upgraded by Ted for transportation, surveillance, and combat. Different versions possess reinforced armor, sophisticated sensors, remote controls, energy weapons, and powerful propulsion systems capable of high-speed flight, with later models capable of reaching orbit. Ted can control the craft through systems incorporated into his gloves and uses it as both a mobile headquarters and support vehicle during missions.

Blue Beetle carries an assortment of specialized gadgets rather than a single permanent superweapon, including communications equipment, sensors, defensive technology, and devices designed for whatever mission he expects to encounter. He retained Dan Garrett’s Blue Beetle Scarab for a time but was never able to make it grant him the abilities his mentor possessed. That limitation became central to Ted’s approach as Blue Beetle: everything he accomplished in the field came from his own inventions, training, and intelligence rather than power supplied by the scarab.
