Blue Beetle

Dan Garrett was an archaeologist whose life changed during an expedition that uncovered a mysterious blue scarab buried within an ancient Egyptian tomb. When danger struck during the excavation, the artifact awakened and transformed him into the Blue Beetle, granting him extraordinary powers when he invoked the words “Khaji Da.” The scarab had once belonged to the ancient rulers of Egypt, and its awakening also released the monstrous Kha-Ef-Re, whom Garrett defeated in his first battle as Blue Beetle. Rather than use the artifact for personal power, Dan carried it home and began using its abilities to fight criminals and supernatural threats.

Dan continued his archaeological career while secretly operating as Blue Beetle, eventually becoming a university professor. One of his students was the brilliant inventor Ted Kord, who later sought Dan’s help after discovering that his uncle, Jarvis Kord, had constructed an army of androids for a plan of conquest.

Appearance: Blue Beetle has light peach skin and a tall, extremely muscular build with broad shoulders, a massive chest, thick arms, a narrow waist, and heavily developed thighs. His head is covered by a close-fitting blue helmet that leaves most of his lower face exposed, with a black forehead section and a tall crimson fin rising from the crown. A dark red angular mask surrounds large opaque white lenses, completely concealing his eyes. His costume is a skin-tight medium-blue bodysuit stretched closely across his chest, abdomen, shoulders, arms, hips, and legs. Numerous sections are covered with overlapping black scale-like markings, especially across the shoulders, upper arms, chest, abdomen, and thighs, creating dense textured patches against the smoother blue fabric.

His forearms are covered by long crimson-red gauntlets that widen slightly toward the elbows and extend over his hands as fitted gloves. A broad red belt wraps around his waist, centered by a large metallic silver buckle formed from rounded segmented plates. The lower suit continues in the same blue material across his powerful legs, with additional black scale patterns concentrated around the inner thighs, knees, and lower sections.

Personality: Dan is courageous, scholarly, responsible, and deeply committed to using the power he discovered for the protection of others. His background as an archaeologist makes him naturally inquisitive, and he approaches unfamiliar artifacts and ancient mysteries with the patience of an academic rather than the instincts of a conventional soldier. Becoming Blue Beetle does not turn him toward personal glory; he treats the scarab as a responsibility and repeatedly places himself in danger when innocent lives are threatened. His willingness to entrust his identity to a successor during his final moments reflects how seriously he regards the work continuing beyond his own lifetime.

Ted Kord is Dan’s student, protégé, and eventual successor, with Dan trusting him enough to reveal his secret and ultimately place the Blue Beetle legacy in his hands. Professor Luri Hoshid accompanies Dan during the archaeological expedition in which the scarab awakens, becoming one of the earliest people connected to his transformation. Jarvis Kord becomes Dan’s final major enemy when his android army forces Dan and Ted into the battle that costs Dan his life. Kha-Ef-Re is the ancient enemy released when Dan first discovers the scarab and becomes one of his earliest supernatural adversaries. Dan also leaves behind a family that preserves knowledge of his history, including his granddaughter Danielle Garrett, while Jaime Reyes eventually becomes the later bearer of the same scarab and the third hero to carry the Blue Beetle name.

Dan is an accomplished archaeologist with extensive knowledge of ancient civilizations, artifacts, languages, and historical investigation. When transformed by the scarab, he gains superhuman strength, enhanced speed, extreme durability, heightened senses, and resistance to injuries that would incapacitate an ordinary human. The scarab can also produce powerful electrical or energy discharges through his hands and eyes, giving Blue Beetle ranged offensive capabilities in addition to his physical strength.

The Blue Beetle Scarab, later known as Khaji Da, is the source of Dan’s superhuman abilities and transforms him when he calls upon it. Dan understands only a portion of the artifact’s full capabilities, believing it to be a mystical Egyptian relic even though its true nature combines extraordinarily advanced technology with magical properties accumulated during its long history on Earth.
