Blue Beetle

Jaime Reyes was a teenager from El Paso, Texas when the mysterious scarab Khaji Da came into his possession and fused itself directly to his spine. The artifact surrounded Jaime with a living suit of alien armor and made him the third hero to carry the name Blue Beetle, following Dan Garrett and Ted Kord. Soon after bonding with the scarab, Jaime was recruited for the assault on Brother Eye, where Khaji Da’s unique senses allowed him to locate and interact with technology that other heroes could not reach. His unexpected disappearance following the battle carried him far from Earth until the scarab eventually returned him home.

Jaime eventually discovered that Khaji Da had been created by the Reach, an alien civilization that used scarabs as weapons for infiltrating and conquering worlds. Rather than submit completely to its original programming, Khaji Da developed an independent bond with Jaime, allowing the two to resist the Reach and turn technology intended for conquest into a weapon for protecting Earth. Jaime continued operating as Blue Beetle through conflicts involving alien forces, metahuman criminals, and magical threats, eventually serving alongside groups such as the Teen Titans and Justice League while learning how much power the scarab actually contained.

After graduating, Jaime relocated to Palmera City, where the arrival of additional scarab bearers and the refugee group known as the Horizon placed him at the center of a new crisis involving the Reach. He began training the new Beetles Dynastes and Nitida, only for the emergence of the Blood Scarab to ignite the Scarab War and threaten every scarab bearer around him.

Appearance: Blue Beetle is predominantly cobalt blue and black with a tall, athletic armored build defined by broad shoulders, a narrow waist, long limbs, and layered mechanical plating. His head is completely enclosed by a streamlined blue-and-black helmet with a smooth rounded crown, angular cheek sections, and a dark faceplate running down the center. Bright cyan lenses glow from narrow recessed sockets, with additional small luminous blue elements set into the helmet. The chest is covered by large sculpted blue armor plates arranged in symmetrical insect-like shapes over a black mechanical understructure, with a dark beetle emblem worked into the central torso. Rounded blue shoulder shells sit above black segmented upper arms covered in intricate circuit-like patterns, while the forearms continue in dense black plating broken by ribbed joints, angular panels, and blue highlights.

His hands are fully armored in black with segmented fingers and glowing cyan circular elements at several fingertips. The abdomen and hips combine black interlocking mechanical sections with sharp blue plates that taper toward the waist, while the thighs are predominantly black with bright blue oval nodes running along the outer sides. His lower legs transition into larger blue armor sections around the calves and feet, with pointed streamlined plating and dark recessed joints. Four enormous translucent pale-blue wings extend from his back in two upper and two lower sections, each shaped into long tapered insect-like blades with faint internal circuit patterns and segmented structural lines. A pair of curved blue carapace "fins" rises behind his shoulders, adding another layer of insect-like armor to the back.

Personality: Jaime is compassionate, responsible, quick-witted, and unusually grounded despite possessing technology capable of devastating entire armies. He often reacts to the stranger parts of superhero life with humor, but his concern for civilians and his family overrides his fear when a situation becomes dangerous. Jaime’s greatest struggle with Khaji Da has always been maintaining his own moral judgment while bonded to a weapon originally programmed for conquest. Rather than treating the scarab purely as equipment, he gradually comes to recognize it as a partner with its own consciousness, building enough mutual trust that Khaji Da becomes something fundamentally different from the obedient Reach weapon it was designed to be.

Alberto Reyes and Bianca Reyes are Jaime’s parents, while Milagro Reyes is his younger sister and one of the family members most closely connected to his life outside superheroics. Paco Testas and Brenda Del Vecchio are his longtime best friends and remain important parts of his life as he moves from El Paso to Palmera City. Ted Kord becomes Jaime’s predecessor, mentor, and partner within the Blue Beetle legacy, while Booster Gold provides another link to Ted and has repeatedly assisted Jaime during unusual crises. Traci Thirteen is a former romantic partner and magical ally. Dynastes and Nitida become younger scarab bearers whom Jaime takes responsibility for training, while the Reach remains the alien power most closely connected to Khaji Da’s original purpose and one of the greatest threats surrounding his identity as Blue Beetle.

Jaime’s bond with Khaji Da gives him access to an adaptive suit of alien armor with superhuman strength, extreme durability, high-speed flight, environmental protection, and advanced sensory systems. The armor can rapidly analyze threats and reshape itself in response, creating weapons directly from its own structure. Jaime can form energy cannons, blades, shields, grappling implements, and other specialized constructs according to the situation, while the scarab can automatically protect him from attacks even when he has little time to react.

Khaji Da also provides technological interfacing, translation, scanning, communications, and functions capable of operating in hostile environments or open space. The scarab has demonstrated unusual abilities such as dimensional or vibrational shifting, allowing Jaime to disappear from ordinary perception and survive circumstances that would leave most heroes stranded. His experience has gradually made him a capable close-quarters combatant in his own right, but his greatest strength comes from learning to work with Khaji Da rather than simply allowing the armor’s combat programming to dictate how he fights.
